A
zim Rizvee first came to Canada from Lahore Pakistan for a job. The country was so welcoming he decided it to make it his home. He moved to Milton in 2004, and started his business: Minmaxx Realty. He has always supported local causes such as Milton Transitional Housing, and the Milton District Hospital, as well as the efforts to bring a University campus here. “He understood that this was a great community, and it was important to support this community, and take it to the next level,” Halton M.P.P. Indira Naidoo-Harris told an enthusiastic crowd at a recent fundraiser on September 15, 2015.
Keynote Speaker Bob Rae applauded Azim’s willingness to give back in his comments. “The instinct of being in the community, of helping others is so deeply ingrained in what he’s doing. And it’s deeply ingrained in what we are all about as a party.” The Liberal Party’s main theme is fairness for the middle class.
Rae feels Rizvee’s business experience will fit in perfectly with the party. “The heart of a party that believes you cannot have a strong economy, you cannot have strong public finances without a strong business community and a strong middle class.” The Liberals served as government from 1993-2006, and delivered 13 straight budget surpluses. Their 2015 platform includes a promise to run a modest deficit over 3 years in order to help municipalities to pay for infrastructure and transit. Azim Rizvee has a sense of collective responsibility. He believes in political cooperation no matter what the level in government: “We’ve got to be talking first of all amongst ourselves. Otherwise how can we serve the people’s needs?” In his opinion no issue is federal, or provincial, or regional. “We are the leaders who have got to work amongst ourselves first of all. And we’ve got to deliver to the people what they expect of us,” he said. To

ou might have seen Rozlyn Rooke with her father out chucking and putting on the greens. At only 10 years old, she’s dedicated to reaching her dreams of being alongside some her heres, Stacey Lewis or Brooke Henderson someday. That dream is a close possibility due to her hard work and achievements she’s already made in her golfing career. Rozlyn was only three years old when she started hitting a golf ball around.”It was an accident,” Rozlyn said giggling. “Cause my dad was hitting the balls into the woods and we have a German Shepard who brings it back from the woods and I liked that. So my dad cut down one of his clubs and I started swinging and he felt that I had a good swing.” RoZlyn started taking to the game right from an early age and started competing in tournaments when she turned seven years old with the Canadian Junior Golf Association, MJT, OAG and the US Kids Tour. It only took her a year when she was eight to climb to her first victory at the Beaverdale Golf Course. June 1st 2014 Rozlyn scored a double eagle 2 on the par 5, 7th hole- a very impressive feat for such a young student.
cleans up the Golf Course! Her new nickname, “The Wolf,” best describes the passion Rozlyn has for the sport. “I get very hungry and I am learning to attack it,” she said. “The golf course would be my prey so I would attack the golf course.” Her clubs even have adorable wolf covers, a little personal touch that Rozlyn has brought to her game. “I liked golf since its very athletic. You use a lot of your muscles and its kinda like hockey. Its very interesting,” Rozlyn said when asked about why she likes the sport. “I liked it when I saw the professional golfers on TV, I like to see my dad golfing and my step brothers.” Rozlyn and her family are often out there the some twenty hours a week helping her work towards her personal best. Rozlyn is a member of The Turtle Creek Golf Club in Campbellville, Ontario and The Granite Ridge Golf Club in Milton, Ontario. She also practices at The Range & Golf Centre in Milton Ontario. During the winter she practices at The Golfers Academy in Burlington Ontario. Raising money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis
L
iam’s Angels held a family fun day on Aug. 29 at the Italian Canadian Club of Milton to help raise awareness of Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. The event was named after Liam Wilson, an infant, who is suffering from the disease. Liam is currently undergoing medical treated at Hamilton McMaster Hospital. The family and friends of the young boy’s family set up games and stalls along with
sponsoring vendors selling foodstuff, household items, flowers and other items to help raise funds. Mom, Deana Wilson said, said it’s important to help raise awareness and look for ways to assist patients and families who are directly affected by the disease.
Event organizer Vicki mentioned that about 200 people turned up in the morning so far. She said that she expected more by the end of the day.
Vicki said that this was the first attempt to raise money for cystic fibrosis in Milton. She said it definitely helped in raising awareness of the illness which afflicts many children. According to the Cystic Fibrosis website, “It is estimated that one in every 3,600 children born in Canada has cystic fibrosis. Almost 4,000 Canadian children, adolescents, and adults with cystic fibrosis attend specialized CF clinics.” There were at least 25 volunteers providing help to run the games, which include fishing ponds, bocce ball, lawn bowling. In addition there were pony rides and bouncy castles for kids of all ages to enjoy. In a hall, there were stalls selling all kinds of stuff, from knitted baskets and ornaments to jams and pickles. Outside the hall, there were stalls selling pizzas, tea and coffee with donuts and muffins. In addition there was local Magician, Tyler Fergus, in attendance who awed the attending children with feats of magic. Asim Sayed came with his family of two small children and a baby, carried by his wife, He said they had a swell of a time, while his wife added that it was fun coming out.

Begins Their Second Season
T
he Milton Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is embarking on an even bigger and better season starting with their first concert on November 1st, entitled The Magical World of Disney. It is the orchestra’s first family-oriented concert, which they hope to reinvent every year. A lot of things have changed since last year’s concert lineup, according to President and CoFounder, Jenn Callum. Callum said that their first year was “abbreviated, simply due to starting so late”, so this year and moving forward, they will have more concerts that will cover many types of music, and attract a greater audience. She said that each season will differ in content, but they do plan to have one family-specific concert yearly. “We will have something that will appeal to everyone,” said Callum. The MPO’s debut was a whirlwind creation over the summer of 2014, and their debut concert was the introduction of their Winterlude holiday series to a packed house on December 7th. According to their website, “Each year moving forward, the MPO will redefine Christmas and
Winter in Milton with a Winterlude Series you’re sure to cherish and adopt as your own family tradition”. “We hope that families will make our Winterlude Series a wonderful part of their own holiday traditions each year,” said Callum. “This year, along with amazing Soprano Rachel Cleland, we are excited to have a dance troupe from the Dance Class Milton performing pieces from the Nutcracker, and I’m also working on a secret addition that I hope to announce in the near future.” The first half of the season includes The Magical World of Disney, on November 1st, Winterlude II: the Gift of Christmas, on December 12th, and a special Sing-A-Long Messiah will be held on December 19th. Details can be found on their website. “We encourage everyone who wishes to

is Back! Oct 23rd to 25th at Milton Mall
I
t’s back! Milton will once again hear the moans of vampires and chills of fright as it braces itself for the 6th annual Milton Haunted House held inside Milton Mall.
Milton Haunted House, located across from Stitches in the mall, is open to all ages on Saturday October 24th and Sunday October 25th from noon to 5pm. There is also a scary version for an older crowd held Friday Night October 23rd with a VIP Reception and Tour.
“We have played host to the Haunted House since 2011,” said Jenifer Sim, the Marketing Director at the Milton Mall, who is a sponsor for the event. “When I first came across it, it was set up in tents at one of the summer events in Milton and was blistering hot. I thought that it would be amazing to get it moved to the mall and have it happen at the same time as the mall’s annual Mallowe’en Spooktacular that we run for children.”
Entering its sixth year, the initiative has raised over $50,000, which goes towards the MDHF, to help with the purchase of new medical equipment and facility improvements. The goal is to raise $10,000 this year. The event has many sponsors and volunteers preparing for the upcoming event and putting it all together.
“Mattamy Homes is pleased to have the opportunity to once again, participate in the Haunted House fundraiser as platinum sponsor,” said Mike Vernooy, SVP Land Development for Mattamy’s HaltonHamilton Division. “We’re very humbled, and grateful, that our communities in Milton have been so well received, with thousands of families now calling it home. Because of that, and in recognition of the importance of community to our business and in our society, we truly believe that it’s important for us to be part of and give back to the communities in which we develop and build.”

Tiger Jeet Singh Jr., President of the Tiger Jeet Singh Foundation, is happy to add the Foundation this year as one of the events three Platinum sponsors. “The Milton Haunted House is a great local community effort that serves to support funding for Milton District Hospital. Raising awareness and funding that is so desperately needed to support hospitals has always been one of the Foundation’s primary objectives.” said Tiger. Tiger’s father, Tiger Jeet Singh has been a goodwill ambassador for Milton since 1994. The TJS Foundation has a great history of philanthropy helping hospitals, public schools and many other worthwhile areas that government funding currently falls short.
Volunteers, mainly high school students, describe this event as fun and a good experience where you can meet new people and get to know everyone.
“I love to be involved in my community,” said Oshany Rammoorthi, a 17-year-old
volunteer. “I love to paint, its fun and I like how the money they make goes to the hospital.”
“Volunteering for the Milton Haunted house was a really fun and good experience,” said Rebecca Dunlop, a volunteer. “The things I like about volunteering at the haunted house are, meeting new people, setting up the house, scaring people. If you’re looking for a place to volunteer to get your hours do it at the Milton Mall Haunted House.” The Milton Haunted House first started out as a Hawthorne Village neighbourhood attraction in 2006, set up at the home of a local Milton Town Councillor. When it grew in size and popularity threatening to take over both the basement and garage, the councillor’s spouse gave an ultimatum, either it or the councillor had to move to a new home.

T
he United Way Milton Christmas House Tour 2015 is all set to take place in November with preparations well underway. The event, presented by Springridge Farm, has taken place annually since 2008. It’s organized by community volunteers, assisted by professional decorators, designers and florists who volunteer their services to decorate the inside and outside of area homes -- which have been donated by Milton residents -- in gorgeous holiday décor. It’s a true community partnership. “The tour is open to everyone in the community,” said committee chair Susan Jones. “It takes place this year on Friday, November 20, and Saturday, November 21. Friday night tickets include a limo tour of the homes at night plus dinner and shopping at Springridge Farm; Saturday, November 21 is a self-drive tour of the homes.” This year there are seven properties – six homes plus a bonus location. The tour includes a historic home in Old Milton, and several properties in new areas of Milton – reflecting the growth of the town, said Jones. The committee strives to include a mix of historic and new homes, from the country
and city. When choosing the homes the committee reviews flow through the home, interesting features and renovations. For the homeowners they strive to make it enjoyable and seamless and for the public, they want it to be inspiring and fun. Each year the decorators feature the newest decorating ideas, colours and themes. “The tour makes for a unique evening or day out with family or friends, and may even be a fun holiday gift for those folks who have everything,” said committee member Sherri Armstrong. Proceeds from the event support over 20 local programs that receive funding from the United Way of Milton. Through sponsorship and ticket sales, the House Tour contributes about $30,000-$35,000 each year for the United Way in support of these local programs. “Anyone who is interested in looking at beautiful homes, discovering new home decorating ideas, and particularly those who enjoy getting in the spirit of the holiday season will love the United Way of Milton Christmas House Tour,” said Jones.

other Nature concocted some pleasant weather on Sunday, September 20. The sun was endurable and the sand couldn’t have felt more cushiony as players flooded onto the beach volleyball grounds near the Milton Sports Centre. However, this tourney wasn’t about winning or losing, because when you’re playing for charity it’s always a win-win situation. Everybody benefits! This was the sentiment as Milton Orthotic & Wellness Foundation hosted it’s fifth annual charity beach volleyball tournament. Head Organizer, Angelo Posteraro, founder of the Milton Orthotic & Wellness Foundation, explained that most participants were returning players while many others were recruited from social campaigns. The proceeds of this tournament were targeted to two
organizations; Milton District Hospital Foundation and The Deck, which is a youth drop-in centre. “This tournament exceeds all of our expectations and we’ve got about 50 players out there that are having a great time and playing for this noble cause,” explained Angelo Posteraro. The entire MOCW team deserves accolades for arranging a well scripted tournament. “Angelo and I work on many community events together and I pitch in as much as I can,” said event assistant Heather Gerrits. While the backdrop of upbeat music raised the adrenaline of many players, the same enthusiasm was at the on-site barbecue game after game. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, water and pop were some of the main menu items that disappeared quickly. “So far we’re having a blast. I’m playing with my family, my cousins and

my boyfriend’s brother in law. We’re just having an awesome time playing for this good cause,” replied participant Adrienne Bradley. “I’m very familiar with Angelo and this organization, he asked us if we wanted to play so we put in a team and are absolutely loving it. The weather couldn’t have been more cooperative,” said player Leigh Theriault. So cooperative that players weren’t shy of revealing the competitive nature in them. Many players were seen diving face first into the sand just to make a pivotal shot. Others stumbled in every conceivable direction just to preserve a healthy volley.

Volleyball wasn’t the only route to charity as a silent auction transpired with many local sponsors donating their services/ products for this noble cause. MOCW’s attempt at a successful charity event truly succeeded with a record breaking 50 players stepping in the sand. Let’s see if MOCW can serve up another record breaker in 2016?
