Welcome Welcome to the 2017–18 school year at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Support your students’ critical thinking, creativity, and visual literacy skills with a trip to the Museum. Develop vocabulary, explore interdisciplinary curriculum applications, and foster evidence-based thinking through world-class works of art. Docentguided tours are designed to enhance curriculum, from Common Core to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math), and free family passes allow all students to extend their Museum experience on a return visit with their family.

Planning Your Visi We look forward to welcoming you and your students to the Museum. Here are some easy steps to make the most of your visit.

REQUESTING A TOUR

l Order buses/transportation early. l Special accommodations:

Tell us about any special accommodations or needs when you request your tour. The Museum is wheelchair accessible and has several wheelchairs on-site if you should require one.

Tour Scheduler and submit payment two weeks before your tour. Please Note: No increases in head count or changes in program/tour will be accepted after the two-week deadline. The Museum cannot offer a refund if your head count decreases after your payment has been made, and cannot accept payment at the door.

l Prepare students and chaperones

l Plan the length of your visit. You have the option of self-guiding the Museum (without a docent) after your docentguided tour. Please notify the Tour Scheduler if you plan to stay longer. Unless otherwise notified, your tour will be one hour in duration.

WHAT TO BRING

l Name tags: Each student and adult

in your group must wear a name tag that you supply. These act as your admission into the Museum.

l Clipboards/pencils (optional): If

you would like to have your class write or draw, please bring your own clipboards, pencils, and paper. Remember that only pencils are allowed in the galleries to protect the artwork.

what not to bring... Lunches: The Museum does not have on-site lunch facilities for school groups. Please plan your visit accordingly.

Backpacks: In order to protect the artwork from potential damage, backpacks of any kind are not permitted inside the galleries.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

l Enter the Museum’s School Group

Entrance, to the north of the Main Entrance on Art Museum Drive, unless otherwise directed by the Tour Scheduler. Please remain on the bus until greeted by Museum staff.

l Your bus may park at the south end of Art Museum Drive, along Lincoln Memorial Drive, in Veterans Park, or at other public locations.

l Be on time; arrive no more than

15 minutes early. Note that if you are late, your tour will be shortened. If you are more than 20 minutes late, your tour will become a self-guided tour. If you are delayed, please call the Museum’s reception desk at 414-224-3290.

Art from Many Places and Times In this overview of the Museum Collection, students acquire basic art vocabulary and critical-looking skills while exploring the making and meaning of art from different cultures.

A Is for Art Take a tour with the alphabet! Inspired by the book A Is for Art by Marjorie Nelson Moon, explore art from many cultures while reinforcing language development.

Special Focus: Black History Month Feb 1–28, 2018

February is Black History Month. Celebrate black history by experiencing the ways artists of African descent, including African Americans, use their work to document their lives, tell the stories of their communities, and fight for social change.

Special Focus: Women’s History Month March 1–31, 2018

March is Women’s History Month. Celebrate women from rebel rousers, femmes fatales, and daring dames through our collection of art inspired or created by women.

Feature/Special Exhibition Tour the exhibitions on view at the Museum for a limited time (see page 3). Expand your visit with activities for the classroom, available on the Teacher Resources site at teachers.mam.org. Self-Guided Tour Don’t need a docent? This option is available for teachers who would prefer to lead their own tour. Prepare for your visit with resources at teachers.mam.org and with the self-guided tour tips card available on-site. Receive a great rate on group admission. Ask about our “A Is for Art” and “Writing and Art” self-guided activities.

Storytelling in Art Imagine, tell, and listen to stories that artists portray in their work. Animals in Art Discover a menagerie of friendly animals and fantastic beasts from different cultures and times in paintings and sculptures. Exploring Art Through the Senses Take a journey through the galleries using your imagination: How might artworks smell, taste, feel, and sound? Line, Shape, and Color Learn how artists begin to create masterpieces by getting to know the building blocks of art: line, shape, and color.

INFORMATION Docent-Guided Tours Bring your students for a guided experience with one of the Museum’s docents, trained volunteer educators who support your students in exploring the Collection and making connections to the curriculum. Complimentary Family Passes You will receive a Family Pass for each student you bring on your school tour! With this pass, students can return to the Museum with their families for free. Each pass provides free Museum admission for two adults and up to four children younger than 18 years old.

GRADES 4–12 (one-hour tours) Themes/Collections Communities and Traditions Investigate the customs of people who live both near and far, discovering differences, similarities, and cross-cultural influences portrayed in their art. Special Focus: Gatherings Nov 1, 2017–Jan 31, 2018 Enjoy this special tour, which explores social, family, and ritual gatherings from around the world. Portraiture Meet the people—and animals— revealed in the portraits throughout the Museum’s galleries. Sculpture* Steel, glass, bronze, and even buttons make up the three-dimensional works in the Museum’s sculpture collection. How’d They Do That? Glazing, scumbling, impasto, collage, assemblage? These mysterious words are demystified after exploring the many techniques artists use to create their work. Foreign Language Tours: French, Spanish, or German Enhance study of French, Spanish, or German by exploring related art and culture. (Specify your language choice with the Tour Scheduler. Docents for these tours are limited.) Museum Architecture Look inside (and outside) the Museum’s layers of architectural history, with designs by Eero Saarinen, David Kahler, and Santiago Calatrava.

Haitian Art Learn about the culture of this Caribbean country through the Museum’s rich collection of Haitian paintings and sculpture. Folk Art and Self-Taught Art In these works by self-taught artists, history and inner visions emerge and people and animals are animated, inviting questions about art and its role in society. Modern and Contemporary Art* Get to know the “isms,” from Realism to Abstract Expressionism, while comparing works made from the mid-1860s to the present day. American Art Hear about American stories, places, and people from across the United States represented in art. Art by Artists of the African Diaspora Celebrate the heritage of people of African descent. From folk art to fine art, explore the connections between Africa, Europe, the United States, and beyond. New: Social Concerns + Social Justice in Art Social justice can be defined as action to create genuine equality and respect among people. Discover how artists past and present have created art in pursuit of social justice. From antiquities to contemporary, investigate how artists capture social concerns from poverty, housing rights, religious freedom, slavery, racism, and gender inequalities in their artwork.

Lynden Sculpture Garden and Museum Tour

Grades 1–4 | Time varies | $5 per student Optional: Go hands-on at Betty Brinn Children’s Museum with guided exploration and play (additional fees apply). Register with the Milwaukee Art Museum, and then contact Betty Brinn Children’s Museum at groups@ bbcmkids.org or call 414-390-5437, ext. 272.

The environment and your imagination play important roles in unearthing the history of sculpture. Learn about sculpture inside and out—or better said, indoors and outdoors— at these two important Milwaukee institutions. Grades 1–12 | Time varies | $5 per student Additional fees apply for the Lynden Sculpture Garden. Register with the Milwaukee Art Museum, and then call Lynden at 414-446-8481.

MUSIC + ART Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Concert and Museum Tour Extend your MSO Concert for Schools experience with a docent-guided tour of the Museum’s works that relate to concert themes.

LIFE SCIENCES + ART Discover connections between art and the life sciences. See how artists use their senses and borrow from the sciences to observe the natural world. View works of art that cover living things from plants to wildlife and humans. Grades K–5 | Time varies | $5 per student Optional: Visit Discovery World to continue your exploration of the living world. Examine living fish from Lake Michigan and see firsthand how science uses art for animal identification (additional fees apply). WRITING + ART Writing & Art Docent-Guided Tour Available Sept 2017–April 2018 This tour, inspired by the National Writing Project at Carroll University and grounded in the Six Traits of Writing framework, introduces the Museum as a place of inspiration for writing. After receiving their own Museum journals/sketchbooks, students look closely at works of art, using a variety of writing skills, developing a descriptive word bank, and practicing “low stakes” writing. Grades 4–12 | 1 ½ hours | $10 per student NOTE: Space is limited. Please be flexible when requesting dates.

THEATER + ART First Stage Performance Company and Museum Tour The Modern Line: Drawing from Process to Product Dec 5 or 6, 2017 9:30–11 am or Noon-1:30 pm Explore dynamic portraits, forms, colors, and subject matters through a docent-led tour of the Museum’s feature exhibition of modern drawings from the Collection.

Afterward, students will be joined by First Stage Teaching Artists and actively engage in the stories, characters, and perspectives depicted in these works of art. Grades 1–8 | 11/2 hours | $10 per student NOTE: Space is limited. Please book early. Coming Away: Winslow Homer and England April 3 or 4, 2018 9:30–11 am or Noon-1:30 pm Experience this nineteenth-century American painter’s iconic coastal scenes of England and Maine, along with his vivid portrayals of local townspeople and children at play, on a docent-guided tour. Then join First Stage Teaching Artists in a performance workshop to explore story settings, characters, and narratives inspired by the exhibition. Grades 1–8 | 11/2 hours | $10 per student NOTE: Space is limited. Please book early.

NEW: HISTORY + ART America’s Black Holocaust Museum Presentation and Museum Tour Nov 9, 2017 | 9:30–11 am Join America’s Black Holocaust Museum (ABHM) and the Milwaukee Art Museum for a special program in honor of the local and national history of African Americans and people of African descent. The combined presentation by ABHM griots (storytellers) and Art Museum docents is a timely collaboration that explores how artists express identity and use storytelling to bring history to life. Grades 5–12 | 11/2 hours | $10 per student NOTE: Space is limited. Please book early.

School Programs ART OF WRITING Young Authors and Artists Conference Mon, Dec 4, 2017 | 8:30 am–3:15 pm Young writers and artists use the Museum as inspiration for first-person narrative writing or artwork in this daylong, regional conference. The conference is geared toward individual students, or groups of students, registered through their school. SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS Studio Workshop School Program Available Tues–Thurs, Sept 2017–April 2018 Be the artist! Students explore the Museum’s Collection on a tour of your choice (see pages 6–7), and then create their own works of art in the studio. Museum staff will design a project that fits your curriculum. Grades PK–12 | 2 hours | $10 per student Junior Docent School Program For over forty years, the Junior Docent School Program has introduced elementary school students to the vocabulary, elements, and history of art while developing critical-thinking skills. Over three consecutive years, students visit ten times, contextualizing art into their life. After a culminating project presented to their peers and family, they become official Junior Docents. The Herzfeld Photography, Print, and Drawing Study Center Available year-round by appointment only A visit to the Herzfeld Photography, Print, and Drawing Study Center offers a unique opportunity for researchers and classes to become familiar with the Museum’s works on paper collection. Researchers can make an appointment to access the Museum’s extensive collection of works on paper. Classes can schedule a visit to view selected works of art, discuss topics related to the collection, or explore print and photography techniques with a staff member. All class appointments must be made at least four weeks in advance (pending availability). Grades 11–12 | 45 minutes | $5 per student Email studycenter@mam.org or call 414-224-3817.

THE SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS Submissions due Wed, Dec 20, 2017 On display Feb 3–March 18, 2018 Teachers, submit your students’ artwork to the Scholastic Art Awards. The Scholastic Art Awards program provides creative teenagers with early recognition of their work by local and national professionals in the arts, and with exhibition opportunities with regional and national audiences.
