president’s report On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Milwaukee Art Museum, I am pleased to report that the Museum finished fiscal year 2013 (September 1, 2012–August 31, 2013) with a balanced budget for the fifth consecutive year.

With exhibitions Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London; Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America; and 30 Americans, the Museum was bustling with established friends and new and diverse audiences alike. Special events, tours, lectures, and family programs created a spirited atmosphere. Nearly 400,000 visitors came through the Museum doors, and membership remained at over 20,000.

Most significantly this year, the Museum reached an agreement with Milwaukee County and the War Memorial Center to completely repair, redesign, and reinstall the gallery spaces within the Saarinendesigned War Memorial Center and the Kahler addition.

The long-delayed maintenance to these buildings was reaching a critical point, jeopardizing both the art and our visitors.

Now, thanks to the support of Milwaukee County, the work to repair and restore these buildings will begin in the fall of 2014. The plans include a new HVAC system; a watertight roof; brighter, more navigable galleries; and a new changing gallery, adjacent to the Bradley Collection on the Upper Level. Also included are a dedicated photography and video area and an east-side addition, offering a lakeside entrance to the Museum. This is an ambitious but necessary $25 million project. Milwaukee County has committed $10 million in funds, and the Museum will be working to raise the additional $15 million in private donations.

Our Plan for the Future will secure the Museum’s holdings and assets for generations to come, and we will be looking to all who support the Museum to partner with us in this historic endeavor.

We are also deeply appreciative of the various community partners that gave financial support this fiscal year to help us not only present the finest art in the world, but also provide enriching community programs, including education programs to nearly 55,000 schoolchildren from the Milwaukee area. I am proud to share our accomplishments, thanks to support from our corporate sponsors, Business Circle and President’s Circle Members, individual donors, support groups, and, of course, Museum Members. And I want to thank the Museum staff, volunteers, docents, and Board of Trustees for their help in achieving our goals.

Their dedication and commitment are invaluable.

The future is bright for the Museum. The next fiscal year will again bring can’t-miss exhibitions, new activities in the Kohl’s Education Center spaces—and many more surprises. I am excited for the opportunities ahead, and our foundation is solid.

Daniel T. Keegan

I am pleased to report that the Museum exceeded its goals for fiscal year 2013 (September 1, 2012–August 31, 2013), both in attendance and revenue. Stellar exhibitions, festive events, expanded partnerships, and a diligent and prudent staff all contributed to our success, with nearly 400,000 experiencing the Museum this year.

Our audiences were treated to a diverse and powerful lineup of exhibitions, including Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London; Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America; and 30 Americans and its companion installation, Wisconsin 30. It was a delight to see so many people, both new visitors and old friends, in the galleries each and every day. Part of our mission is to educate and inspire our visitors, and I know firsthand that our guests left the Museum with new appreciation and insights.

Chief Educator Barbara Brown Lee retired in February, after fifty years of service to this Museum. Her impact on visitors, docents, students, curators, and even directors is immeasurable. She is, without a doubt, the institutional memory of the Milwaukee Art Museum and its greatest asset. But don’t fear, Barbara is still “on the job,” reporting to her office in the Museum a few days each week, continuing to lecture, educate, and enlighten. We wish her well in her retirement, whenever she actually “retires,” and are indebted to her for her years of service.

Members and visitors turned out in record numbers for Art in Bloom, the Lakefront Festival of Art, MAM After Dark, and Yoga @ the Museum. We saw more families than ever before in the expanded Kohl’s Education Center, in our many art-making and art-appreciation classes, and at Play Date with Art. In addition to the attendees of tours, workshops, activities, and lectures by distinguished guests, nearly 55,000 schoolchildren visited our galleries. It was a banner year.

Looking ahead, we begin our Plan for the Future and our reinstallation of the galleries, a $25 million project the Museum is carrying out in partnership with Milwaukee County. Without the leadership of Milwaukee County, which is working in collaboration with the Milwaukee Art Museum, this ambitious and critical reinvention of the Museum would not be possible.

I am grateful, too, for our continued partnership with Target, whose generous sponsorship allows for the free admission of all Museum visitors on the first Thursday of each month. This past fiscal year, 35,000 guests participated and enjoyed the art on Target Free First Thursday.

We added two outstanding curators to the Museum’s staff in 2013. From the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Lisa Sutcliffe joined the staff in January as Curator of Photography, and Tanya Paul, appointed the Isabel and Alfred Bader Curator of European Art, joined us in June from the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa.

I am excited to see how these two will help shape the Museum as we begin in earnest our reinstallation plan in the fall of 2014.

curatorial report This year the Milwaukee Art Museum celebrated its founding, in 1888 (when Frederick Layton opened the Layton Art Gallery), and its 125 years of growth through three exhibitions and a variety of programs. The Museum’s institutional history was recounted in 125 Years of the Milwaukee Art Museum, which ran the length of Baumgartner Galleria; Mr. Layton’s Gallery, which re-created the Victorian salon-style installation that Mr. Layton preferred for his painting galleries; and The Layton Art Collection: 1888–2013, co-organized with the Chipstone Foundation, which examined the rich history of the Layton Art Gallery.

The Museum was pleased to welcome two new curators to the staff. Lisa Sutcliffe joined the Museum as Curator of Photography in January 2013, from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Lisa coordinated the installation of the exhibition Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America shortly after arriving at the Museum and curated a compelling installation of collection photographs titled The Directorial Mode. Lisa brought the contemporary video installation Question Bridge: Black Males to the Museum in conjunction with the summer exhibition 30 Americans. She also connected the Museum to the exciting nationwide photography project Postcards from America, inviting a group of leading photographers from Magnum Photos to our city to capture Milwaukee’s unique qualities during different seasons. The project will culminate in an exhibition in summer 2014.

Dr. Tanya Paul, formerly curator of European art at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma, joined the Museum in June 2013 as the first Isabel and Alfred Bader Curator of European Art. Tanya’s specialty is seventeenth-century Dutch painting and she has considerable experience with European prints. She is well underway planning exciting exhibitions and acquisitions for the Museum.

In spring, Milwaukee played host to the largest print organization in North America, SGC International.

Artists from all fifty states and abroad came to the city to attend SGCI’s annual conference. The Museum’s Print Forum generously supported the exhibition William Kentridge: The Nose in conjunction with the conference, and the Museum featured an installation of prints by contemporary women printmakers on the Mezzanine Level.

Also of note, the Museum provided its expertise to an important community partner, whose home is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpieces—SC Johnson Company. In collaboration with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, the Museum served as a consultant on the exhibition Usonia: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Vision of the American Home, for installation in the Frank Lloyd Wright Gallery at the company’s headquarters in Racine.

Acquisitions Contemporary Art

The Contemporary Art Society hosted the Twelfth Benefit Art Auction in fall 2012. With their support, the Museum made three major contemporary art acquisitions. The Age of Enlightenment–Immanuel Kant (2008) is one of Yinka Shonibare’s life‑sized sculptural tableaux, which are humorous and provocative explorations of post‑colonial discourse. David Schnell’s Schleier (2012) builds on the Museum’s significant holdings of twentiethcentury German painting. Schnell is one of the leading practitioners of the Leipzig School, a group of painters that emerged internationally after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Photographer Sally Mann took a series of portraits of her children in their twenties; JESSIE #6 (2004) is one of the most striking works in this series.

To honor Chief Educator Barbara Brown Lee, who this year celebrated her fiftieth anniversary at the Museum, and her retirement, the Museum purchased Charles Radtke’s sculpture One of One (2012) for the Collection. Barbara is a long-time friend of the Wisconsin-based artist and an early proponent of his work. This cabinet has all the Radtke trademarks: precise detailing, extraordinary craftsmanship, and a strong conceptual component.

Through a generous gift from Sue Wiechmann, the Museum acquired a painting by John Wilde, one of the most important Wisconsin artists of the twentieth century. Parade IV (2002) is an important example of the figurative Surrealist’s work.

Sadly, long-time Museum friend and local gallery owner Cissie Peltz passed away in 2013. Through support from the Museum’s Print Forum members and the Cissie Peltz Memorial Fund, the Museum acquired a print series by contemporary artist Jane Hammond titled Fairness, from the series Six Sets (Patience, Faith, Kinship, Perception, Insight, Fairness) (2001), in Cissie’s memory.

Self-Taught Art

In addition, the Museum received funds to purchase several prints, including works by nineteenth-century French etching revival printmakers Félix Bracquemond and Charles Meryon, and engravings by sixteenthcentury Fontainebleau artist René Boyvin. To honor past curator Mary Weaver Chapin and her specialty in nineteenth-century French prints, the DASS Fund donated Pierre Bonnard’s lithograph Little Washerwoman (1896).

American Art

Through a gift from Paul Owen III and John K. Owen, the Museum acquired its first work by Wisconsin artist Bernard Gilardi, Untitled [Wisconsin Ribbon Co.] (1967). Gilardi’s work relates to two styles strongly represented in the Collection—self‑taught art and Magic Realism, as practiced by prominent Wisconsin artists such as John Wilde and Karl Priebe.

With funds donated by Andrew Ziegler, the Museum acquired a portrait by British-born Joseph Blackburn, an artist worthy of wider art historical recognition.

Blackburn left London in 1752 in search of greater artistic opportunities in the English colonies. He went first to Bermuda where he painted four-year-old Anne Jones. Blackburn’s portrait relates the intrinsic, sweet charm he would capture in his sitters.

Photographs

20th-Century Design

In honor of departing photography curator Lisa Hostetler, the Museum’s Photography Council, the Herzfeld Foundation, and numerous private supporters purchased two works by contemporary photographer Alec Soth. Adelyn, Ash Wednesday, New Orleans, LA (2000) and Luxora, Arkansas (2002) are from Soth’s series Sleeping by the Mississippi, dedicated to the spirit of the river and life along its banks.

A long-term loan to the Museum’s decorative arts collection is now here to stay. Celebrated twentiethcentury Midwest designer George Washington Maher’s Chest of Drawers (1912), for the design masterpiece the Ernest L. King House, was purchased for the Collection with funds from the Edward U. Demmer Foundation in honor of Nicole and L. William Teweles.

The Museum also selected for its Collection three thought-provoking works by Wisconsin native Christian Patterson, who followed the story of nineteen-yearold Charles Starkweather and girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate’s 1950s killing spree spread across Nebraska to Wyoming. Patterson retraced the steps of these young murderers, discovering some of their personal effects and re-creating other moments symbolically, as shown in Telephone (2005–11).

European Art

An outstanding example of Renaissance silverwork is among the works added to the European collection.

With funds from Avis Heller in honor of the Fine Arts Society, the Museum purchased a rare mirror of

extraordinary quality produced in Augsburg, Germany, the European goldsmithing capital at the time.

An object that came into the Museum to fill an important place in the exhibition Grete Marks: When Modern Was Degenerate was later acquired by the Museum with funds from Dr. and Mrs. Charles Lightdale in honor of Grete Marks’s daughter, Dr. Frances Marks. Covered Box (ca.

1927–33) is a prime example of Grete Marks’s dramatic designs, which exemplify the successful intersection of art and industry as taught at the Bauhaus school.

The Museum’s studio glass and ceramics collections experienced robust growth through the gift of several important works by pioneering artists, including Therman Statom’s glass sculpture Mars (1997), Michael Lucero’s Anthropomorphic Jug Form with Bow Tie (New World Series) (1995), and five ceramic vessels by contemporary potter Warren McKenzie.

Museum Library/Archives The Milwaukee Art Museum’s George Peckham Miller Art Research Library continued to serve the research needs of Museum staff, docents, students, teachers, and scholars through the acquisition of vital library resources.

Through generous support from the Alice and Lucia Stern Library Fund, the Mae E. Demmer Charitable Trust, the worldwide catalogue exchange program, and numerous private donations, the library added important resources to its collection, including the three-volume set The Wallace Collection: Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain (1988), as well as Kandinsky: Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil-Paintings (1982). In addition, the library acquired Engraving and Etching, 1400–2000: A History of the Development of Manual Intaglio Printmaking Processes (2012); Manierre Dawson: Inventions of the Mind: A Biography of an Abstract Art Pioneer (2012); and several rare items including The Architect and the Industrial Arts: An Exhibition of Contemporary American Design (1929); Space for Living: Creative Interior Decoration and Design (1938); and A Century of Progress Homes and Furnishings (1934), among others.

Conservation The Conservation Department played a major role in the preparation and conservation of several hundred paintings, objects, and works on paper for the Museum’s three anniversary exhibitions, as well as for Color Rush and 30 Americans. In summer 2013, the department worked on over five hundred folk and self-taught artworks for the winter 2014 exhibition Uncommon Folk: Traditions in American Art. Independent of any exhibition, two Collection works were conserved by private labs, Francisco de Zurbarán’s Saint Francis of Assisi in His Tomb and Tom Wesselmann’s Still Life #51.

The Wesselmann had been off view for over a decade.

Further, the trustees of the Layton Art Collection directed funds toward the purchase of several period frames for works in the Layton Collection, most notably William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s Homer and His Guide.

In May, the Conservation Lab hosted the American Arts Society’s Seventh Annual Conservation Seminar.

The event included a discussion on the restoration of the Museum’s George Mann Niedecken mosaic tile Fireplace Surround for the Harnischfeger Residence (ca.

1905), with specialist conservator Olaf Unsoeld (Fine Wood Conservation, Ltd., Brooklyn, NY).

Collection Partnerships Layton Art Collection

The Layton Art Collection, Inc., is the legacy of the Layton Art Gallery and the precursor to the Milwaukee Art Museum. Founded in 1888 by civic leader Frederick Layton, the Layton Art Gallery was the first purposebuilt, public art gallery in the city of Milwaukee; later, it also operated a successful art school. In 1957, the Layton Art Gallery closed its location near Cathedral Square and merged its collections with those of the nearby Milwaukee Art Institute in the newly constructed War Memorial Center, which was founded as an art center and a war memorial. In partnership with the Museum, the Layton Art Collection has in subsequent decades continued to acquire works of art for the benefit of the residents of and visitors to Milwaukee. The Layton Art Collection maintains a separate Board of Trustees, which has placed the collection on loan to the Museum since 1957.

This year marked the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Layton Art Gallery. The Layton Collection directed the expansive publication Layton’s Legacy: A Historic American Art Collection, 1888–2013. The book traces the history of the Layton Art Gallery over the course of six generations, beginning with Frederick Layton, then focusing on Layton Art Gallery director Charlotte Partridge, and ending with the contributions of the current Layton Art Collection trustees and their collaboration with the Milwaukee Art Museum.

The Chipstone Foundation

The Chipstone Foundation is a non-profit organization located in Fox Point, Wisconsin. Milwaukee collectors Stanley and Polly Mariner Stone founded Chipstone in 1965 with the mission to collect early American decorative arts and promote scholarship in the field.

The foundation’s holdings of early American furniture, historical prints, and British pottery continue to be creatively displayed and interpreted within the Museum’s Collection. Chipstone sponsored the exhibition Grete Marks: When Modern Was Degenerate and co-organized and sponsored The Layton Art Collection: 1888–2013.

Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London Oct 12, 2012–Jan 13, 2013 Organized by the American Federation of Arts and English Heritage; curated by Susan Jenkins, senior curator of English Heritage, London; coordinated at the Museum by William Keyse Rudolph, Constance and Dudley J. Godfrey Jr. Curator of American Art and Decorative Arts, and Catherine Sawinski, assistant curator of earlier European art This exhibition featured forty-eight masterpieces on tour from the Iveagh Bequest collection. Most of the paintings had never traveled to the States before, and many of them had rarely been seen outside their home at London’s Kenwood House. Donated to the British nation

by Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh and heir to the world’s most successful brewery, the collection was shaped by the tastes of the Belle Époque—Europe’s equivalent to America’s Gilded Age—when the earl shared the cultural stage and art market with other industry titans such as the Rothschilds, J. Pierpont Morgan, and Henry Clay Frick. The earl’s purchases, made mainly between 1887 and 1891, reveal a taste for the portraiture, landscape, and seventeenthcentury Dutch and Flemish works that could typically be found in English aristocratic collections.

Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America Feb 22–May 19, 2013 Co-curated by Lisa Hostetler, former curator of photographs at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and Katherine A. Bussard, associate curator of photography at the Art Institute of Chicago; coordinated at the Museum by Lisa Sutcliffe, curator of photography Color Rush traced the evolution of color photography in the United States throughout the first seven decades of the twentieth century, exploring the historical developments that led to the medium becoming the norm in popular culture and fine art. This multifaceted exhibition featured nearly two hundred objects, including framed photographs, publications, slide shows, and film clips to present the story of color photography in America as it had never been told before.

30 Americans June 14–Sept 8, 2013 Organized by the Rubell Family Collection, Miami; coordinated at the Museum by William Keyse Rudolph, Constance and Dudley J. Godfrey Jr. Curator of American Art and Decorative Arts 30 Americans showcased the work of thirty-one contemporary African American artists who tackled issues around race, religion, gender, sexuality, and cultural identity. The exhibition featured nearly eighty paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations, and digital media art. Placing works by established artists alongside those by emerging artists, the exhibition further compared the power of influence across generations and within communities.

The Milwaukee presentation of 30 Americans was dedicated to the memory of Dorothy Nelle Sanders, a community leader, the Museum’s first African American trustee and docent, and a founder of the Museum’s African American Art Alliance.

Wisconsin 30 June 12–Sept 8, 2013 Organized in coordination with Sande Robinson, president, Milwaukee Art Museum’s African American Art Alliance, and Lynne Shumow, curator of education, Haggerty Museum of Art, Marquette University In conjunction with 30 Americans, the Museum presented Wisconsin 30, a parallel exhibition featuring paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, and sculpture by thirty Wisconsin African American artists.

This intergenerational exhibition offered a complementary overview of the themes of race and identity explored in 30 Americans, with a focused lens on Wisconsin.

William Kentridge: The Nose Feb 28–May 12, 2013 Coordinated at the Museum by Tina Schinabeck, collections manager of works on paper The Milwaukee Art Museum took part in SGC International’s 41st conference, Print: MKE, hosted by the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee,

by presenting this special exhibition of prints by South African artist William Kentridge. Kentridge had created the etchings displayed in preparation for the staging of The Nose by New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 2010. A satirical tale, The Nose, which originated as a short story in 1836 by Nikolai Gogol, tells the tale of a government official whose nose leaves his face and develops a successful life of its own.

Question Bridge: Black Males June 14–Sept 8, 2013 Organized by artists Chris Johnson and Hank Willis Thomas, in collaboration with Bayeté Ross Smith and Kamal Sinclair; coordinated at the Museum by Lisa Sutcliffe, curator of photography This five-channel video installation offered a platform to represent and redefine black male identity in America, while simultaneously deconstructing stereotypes. Artists Chris Johnson and Hank Willis Thomas worked with 150 black men from twelve disparate cities across the United States in an effort to bridge economic, political, geographic, and generational divisions. These men engaged in a frank question-and-answer exchange around topics such as family, faith, manhood, and violence. Presented in conjunction with 30 Americans, Question Bridge addressed questions of race, class, and identity in America and contributed to conversations about racial identity in art practice.

Tattoo: The Art of Amund Dietzel July 3–Oct 13, 2013 Guest curated by Jon Reiter; coordinated at the Museum by David Russick, exhibition designer Tattoo celebrated the tenacity and vision of this immigrant entrepreneur and original artist, as well as the endurance of a craft that had finally come of age. Known as the “Master in Milwaukee,” Amund Dietzel not only helped define the look of the traditional tattoo, but he also kept the practice alive through two World Wars and passed the best practices of his craft on to the next generation.

Grete Marks: When Modern Was Degenerate Sept 6, 2012–Feb 17, 2013 Curated by Mel Buchanan, Mae E. Demmer Assistant Curator of 20thCentury Design This was the first American exhibition to highlight the artistic output and life story of Bauhaustrained ceramist Margarete Heymann-Löbenstein-Marks.

Developed with the cooperation of her daughter, Dr. Frances Marks, the exhibition featured approximately forty artworks by this progressive but little-known designer whose promising career was derailed by the German Nazi “degenerate” art campaign.

Godfrey Jr. Curator of American Art and Decorative Arts This dramatic, floor-to-ceiling installation—a salon-style hang—evoked the experience of attending an exhibition at the Layton Art Gallery’s original home near Cathedral Square between 1888 (when the gallery opened) and 1919 (the year that Frederick Layton died).

Featured were paintings from philanthropist Frederick Layton’s original gift to Milwaukee: American masterpieces such as the beloved Old Stagecoach

by Eastman Johnson and Hark!

The Lark! by Winslow Homer, and European treasures such as Homer and His Guide by William Bouguereau.

The History of the Layton Art Collection: From 1888 to Today Decorative Arts Gallery

April 6–Sept 15, 2013 Organized by the Chipstone Foundation; guest curated

by Bill Hosley, Jon Prown of the Chipstone Foundation, and William Keyse Rudolph, Constance and Dudley J. Godfrey Jr. Curator of American Art and Decorative Arts The Layton Art Gallery opened its doors in Milwaukee 125 years ago, on April 5, 1888. This purpose-built gallery—the first in the city’s history—was the gift of British-born businessman, collector, and philanthropist Frederick Layton to his adopted city. This exhibition explored the rich story of how the Layton Collection was founded and how its mission and collections developed over time. Emphasis was placed on the founding of the Layton Art School by Charlotte Partridge in the interwar period and the acquiring of masterworks of American decorative arts by the board of the Layton Collection in the past thirty years.

A Still-Life Masterpiece by Willem Kalf Oct 12, 2012–Jan 13, 2013 Curated by William Keyse Rudolph, Constance and Dudley J. Godfrey Jr. Curator of American Art and Decorative Arts This one-work exhibition showcased an exceptional stilllife painting by Willem Kalf, on temporary loan from the collection of Isabel and Alfred Bader. Set amid seventeenth-century Dutch still lifes, portraits, and genre paintings from the Museum’s Collection, Kalf’s Still Life further helped highlight the delightful variety of this significant moment in European art history.

The 2013 Scholastic Art Awards: Wisconsin Exhibition Feb 2–March 17, 2013 Students in grades 7–12 annually awe Museum visitors with their creativity and skill. Over 325 student artworks were featured in the 2013 Scholastic Art Awards exhibition in the categories of Architecture, Ceramics & Glass, Comic Art, Design, Digital Art, Drawing, Fashion, Film & Animation, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Twenty-four visual artists and art professionals carefully selected these works from more than fifteen hundred entries, based on the students’ handling of the materials and the expressive execution of the work.

Veterans Book Project: Objects for Deployment April 4–Nov 10, 2013 Coordinated at the Museum by Amy Kirschke, manager of adult and docent programs The Veterans Book Project is a library of books authored collaboratively by artist Monica Haller and dozens of veterans who have been affected by the current American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 2006, the Veterans Book Project has facilitated bookmaking workshops around the country. In December 2012, the Milwaukee Art Museum hosted a Veterans Book Project workshop for local veterans and family members. Participants were invited to edit and design their archives and stories into softbound, print-on-demand books.

The fifty books within the Veterans Book Project Library, including five new works by local veterans, were on view in the corresponding exhibition Veterans Book Project: Objects for Deployment. The gallery was designed as a reading room where visitors were invited to engage with the veterans’ experiences through reading, writing, and conversation.

This catalogue, which accompanied the exhibition Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America, explores the history of color photography in the United States from the moment it became available as a mass medium to the moment it no longer seemed an unusual choice for artists. The book begins with the 1907 unveiling of the autochrome, the first commercially available color process, and continues through the 1981 landmark survey show and book, The New Color Photography, which hailed the widespread acceptance of color art photography. Often in photo histories, color is presented as having arrived fully formed in the 1970s; this book reveals a deeper story and uncovers connections in both artistic and commercial practices. Color Rush looks at photographers and artists Ansel Adams, Harry Callahan, William Eggleston, Walker Evans, Saul Leiter, Helen Levitt, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, László Moholy-Nagy, Irving Penn, Eliot Porter, Cindy Sherman, Stephen Shore, Laurie Simmons, Edward Steichen, Edward Weston, and many others, and examines their work in a fresh context, paying particular attention to color photography’s translation onto the printed page. In doing so, the authors trace a new history that more fully accounts for color’s pervasive presence today.

education + public programs The Museum’s 125th anniversary year was a record-breaking one for participation in the many education and public programs the Museum offers both on- and off-site. The more than 490,000 participants of all ages marks a 40 percent increase over last year. From making art to viewing exhibitions with Audio Guides, attending lectures to socializing at MAM After Dark, visitors are regularly gathering at the Museum and are embracing the variety of ways the Museum has for them to actively deepen and extend their experiences.

Notably, more schools incorporated the school tour programs into their curriculum, and they visited more frequently, with nearly 55,000 total visits by schoolchildren from 627 schools. The Kohl’s Education Center was also open for its first full year to kids and their families, further expanding the Museum’s offerings of family-friendly activities, which had more than 303,000 participants.

In keeping with the Museum’s joint mission with the War Memorial Corporation “To Honor the Dead by Serving the Living,” the Education Department organized bringing the Veterans Book Project: Objects for Deployment to the Museum. Several months before the exhibition, veterans and families affected by the current American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were invited to compile, edit, and design their personal archives and stories into books in a workshop at the Museum with artist Monica Haller. The exhibition in Pieper Education Gallery featured fifty such books, created collaboratively in similar workshops across the county by Haller and the participants (including five local veterans). Designed as a reading room, the installation encouraged visitors to engage with the veterans’ experiences through reading, writing, and conversation.

For opening weekend of 30 Americans and Wisconsin 30, and in celebration of the Museum’s 125th anniversary, the Museum offered free admission, with more than 7,000 people taking part, including many first-time visitors. The youth, family, and adult programs during the two-day Community Weekend event included Story Time in the Galleries; a book salon; gospel, folk, jazz, and world music performances; contemporary dance performances; tours by Wisconsin 30 artists; a discussion on the video installation Question Bridge: Black Males; and a film screening and spoken word.

Visitors also created paintings and sketches inspired by the artworks in 30 Americans.

Thanks to the ideas and involvement of community leaders on the task force that the Museum formed in anticipation of the 30 Americans and Wisconsin 30 exhibitions, attendance to the exhibition and engagement in many of the topics addressed by the artworks reached farther and deeper. Attendance exceeded the Museum’s ambitious goal by 36 percent, making it the seventh-highest-attended exhibition.

And according to visitor surveys, of those who attended, 40 percent were first-time Museumgoers, 39 percent were people of color, and 44 percent were under the age of forty-five. Visitors openly engaged in dialogue on sticky notes placed alongside select artworks in the exhibition, providing thoughtful and moving reflections on notes that grew to cover three walls, and which are being compiled and archived.

The Museum also expanded its audience of educators to well outside the seven-county radius this year, welcoming 164 educators from 94 different schools throughout the state for MAM Connects: Creativity, Technology, and Student-Generated Content. The conference brought nationally acclaimed leaders from TED-Ed and Next Vista for Learning to help educators effectively incorporate technology in their classrooms.

Overlaying the many successes of the year was the celebration of Barbara Brown Lee, who has given fifty years to the Museum, introducing visitors of all ages to the wonders of art. Thousands came to her retirement party on May 2, 2013, during which the Museum announced the establishment of the Barbara Brown Lee Senior Director of Education endowed chair. The endowed chair lasts in perpetuity and is the highest honor the Museum can bestow. The Museum is grateful that Barbara continues to spend her retirement on-site with staff and docents, who work every day to live up to her commitment to education.

development Every Gift Counts The Museum’s ability to present consistently outstanding exhibitions, leading educational programs, and a world-class Collection of more than 30,000 works to its 400,000 annual visitors would not be possible without the generous support of its donors. All gifts—large and small—are critical to the Museum and its efforts to enrich the cultural life in the community. The Museum continues to operate without a sufficient endowment and is not eligible for support from federated fund drives such as UPAF or United Way; as such, it again relied heavily on contributed revenue for its operations in all areas in 2012–2013.

The Museum’s fundraising successes in fiscal year 2013, therefore, reflect the region’s commitment to a world-class art museum for Milwaukee.

Annual Fund The Annual Fund continues to be the single largest source of funding for Museum operations. More than 22,000 supporters contributed a total of $4,728,162 to the fund this fiscal year. Led by Development Committee Chair Ellen Glaisner, a dedicated group of trustees and a committee of volunteers once again produced a successful annual campaign—even during a slowly recovering economy.

Membership Museum membership remained strong in fiscal year 2013, with over 20,000 Member households representing more than 30,000 Members. The Museum is proud to have such a committed group of supporters, whose participation and generosity are integral to the Museum and to ensuring the Museum, as a communitygathering place, remains vibrant all year long.

Comprising over 30 percent of the 2012–2013 attendance, Members took full advantage of their greatest benefit—free and unlimited Museum admission. Members also enjoyed discounts in Café Calatrava and the Museum Store, on Museum classes, programs, and parking passes—and at area businesses. The Museum introduced a new benefit for Members this year, the Neighborhood Discount Program. With their membership card and a photo

ID, Members are now afforded exclusive discounts and deals at local restaurants and retail stores. In collaborating with local businesses, the Museum is not only strengthening its ties with area businesses, but also expanding the Museum Member experience.

Among the highlights of the year was an opportunity in April for Members to attend a day trip to Chicago, to see the large-scale Picasso and Chicago exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago and take in an afternoon downtown. During Member appreciation month in May, the Museum treated Members to deeper discounts in Café Calatrava and the Museum Store, to exclusive curator-led tours and a one-of-a-kind lecture series with Barbara Brown Lee, and to Member Swap Day, with five area museums participating. New Members were invited to a welcome event at the Museum in October to learn more about the Museum’s Collection and programs, from Chief Curator Brady Roberts.

The Museum greatly appreciates all of its Members for their support, advocacy, and commitment.

Support Groups

Membership also affords Members the opportunity to join any of the nine support groups, all of which are busy throughout the year with activities related to a specific interest area within the Museum’s Collection.

More than four hundred Members are involved in support groups.

African American Art Alliance (founded 1990) supports educational programs centering on African American art and artists, promotes volunteer involvement in the Museum, and is dedicated to raising funds for purchasing African American art for the Museum’s Collection.

American Arts Society (founded 1993) celebrates American art, antiques, and architecture from the colonial era into the twentieth century through educational programs, trips, exhibitions, and conservation efforts.

The Collectors’ Corner (founded 1948) is committed to developing educational programs that promote knowledge and important scholarship in the decorative arts.

Contemporary Art Society (founded 1982) promotes the appreciation of contemporary art through the sponsorship of programs that bring renowned artists, critics, and curators to the Museum; by supporting acquisitions; and by sponsoring exhibitions of contemporary art at the Museum.

Fine Arts Society (founded 1987) is a group of Europeanart enthusiasts that sponsors and supports related programs, exhibitions, and acquisitions by the Museum.

Friends of Art (founded 1957) is the Museum’s largest volunteer support group. Hundreds of volunteers work to present FOA events (Bal du Lac, Lakefront Festival of Art) that engage the community, expand the Museum’s audience, and generate funds to support exhibitions at the Museum and the acquisition of artworks for its Collection.

Garden Club (founded 1921) is the largest member club of the Wisconsin Garden Club Federation. The club supports the Museum through the annual Art in Bloom event and other activities.

Photography Council (founded 1988) is devoted to the Museum’s photography collection and exhibition program and allows Museum Members with an interest in the art and history of photography to enrich their knowledge of the medium through an annual program of special events.

Print Forum (founded 1980) unites Museum Members with an interest in prints and drawings from the Renaissance to today. It sponsors exhibitions, lectures, and seminars and provides support for the acquisition of prints, drawings, and artists’ books for the Museum’s Collection.

The Museum is very fortunate to have such longstanding, supportive Members. Their generosity directly affects the breadth and depth of the Museum’s programs, including acquisitions, exhibitions, lectures, and special events, keeping the Museum vibrant. For this, the Museum is deeply grateful.

President’s Circle Every great institution has a circle of leading supporters dedicated to its success. At the Museum, that group is the President’s Circle, comprised of individuals, families, and businesses that contribute $2,500 or more to the Annual Fund. In fiscal year 2013, 268 President’s Circle Members gave $2.9 million.

Members place high value on enriching one’s family, social, and work life through creativity and exposure to alternate ways of seeing the world, and they participated in the Museum’s programs as avidly as they supported them. They attended the President’s Circle Preview for each feature exhibition, intimate curator talks, special day trips, private studio tours, and the Museum’s best receptions and parties.

Everyone in the Museum and the community benefits from the tremendous generosity of the President’s Circle Members. This group has helped make the Museum what it is today, and helps ensure that the Museum continues to thrive for generations to come.

Sponsorship Support The generous contributions and sponsorship of foundations, corporations, and individuals are vital to the Museum’s ability to maintain the caliber of its exhibitions and education and public programs.

Sponsorship not only provides much-needed support, but also builds visibility and awareness of the sponsor’s brand, affords business-building opportunities, and offers memorable hospitality experiences for clients and employees.

Again this year, the Museum received strong sponsorship support. This was the first full year with the Kohl’s Education Center, made possible by a significant grant from Kohl’s Department Stores, and Target Free First Thursdays is invaluable in opening the Museum’s doors to those who might not otherwise visit. Area businesses, foundations, and philanthropists supported the exhibitions Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London; Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography; 30 Americans; and The Veterans Book Project: Objects for Deployment, as well as related programming. Popular events such as MAM After Dark, Family Sundays, Art in Bloom, and the Lakefront Festival of Art were again all made possible for thousands of Museum visitors to enjoy thanks to the commitment of generous sponsors.

Legacy Society More than ninety Museum supporters have promised gifts through their estate plans. Using wills, trusts, insurance, retirement plans, or other assets, planned giving donors receive valuable tax advantages while providing support that benefits Museum visitors for generations to come. Most monies received will build the Museum’s endowment fund, which generated only 8 percent of the annual operating budget in fiscal year 2013, trailing most comparable U.S. art museums.

Members of the Legacy Society enjoy many program and event benefits and have the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping an institution continue to inspire all ages through art, in perpetuity. financial report Financially, the Milwaukee Art Museum concluded fiscal year 2013 with a balanced budget and a strong balance sheet, with no debt as of August 31, 2013. Net assets are approximately $131 million as of year-end.

The following are among the highlights of the 2013 operating year: • T he Museum Store, Café Calatrava, and facility

rentals saw continued success; all contributed a gross profit of almost $2.4 million, an increase of $300,000 from the prior year.

• Goals for the annual campaign, membership, and

sponsorship were met and approximated the same level of giving as the prior year.

• Board-designated reserve funds for future

operational needs were increased by $484,000.

The Museum was able to increase this owing to higher-than-anticipated earned revenue results and expense savings throughout the year.

The investment portfolio experienced strong performance in 2013, gaining approximately $3.2 million in market value from the prior year. The total market value of investments was $46.7 million in 2013, compared to $42.9 million in 2012. The increase in the market value of the funds of approximately $3.8 million was due to strong performance and to additional contributions to the endowment fund.

The Museum’s ability to raise and earn revenues sufficient to cover operating expenses will continue to be a challenge in the years ahead. As the Museum plans for its future, successfully accomplishing its goals will depend on continuing to expand the visitor experience, grow its Member and donor base, and build a larger endowment.
