Five fresh ideas to make your day au courant
IN 2024, WE’RE PRIORITIZING THE PARTY. That means lively music, unique ways to bring guests together and cameras everywhere to capture the fun. Here are the top trends we’re seeing in weddings this year.
Brushing Bride
Live painting is a growing trend, and with good reason – it is a performance that guests will enjoy observing, and the resulting picture is a special memento you’ll treasure forever. Two favorites are Katie Geis (katiegeis.com) and Nicole Bobholz (fineartsbynicole.com); both have a lot of experience and five-star reviews under their belt.
Make It Sustainable
As you plan your event, keep the carbon footprint in mind. One way to go green is with your flower selections. Try seasonal blooms that are grown locally, rather than imported from countries with warmer climates. Wood Violet Floral Design (woodvioletmke.com) and Alfa Flower & Wedding Shop ( alfaflowershop.blog ) both offer eco-friendly bouquets.
Engaging
Icebreakers
Your reception will be a gathering of all of the people you love, but many of them won’t know each other. Dan Fisher and Isabelle Bertram, a Wauwatosa couple, created a custom game of Clue to help their guests get acquainted. They handed out everyone’s game cards in a special envelope containing information about their table number as well as the lowdown about their new identity. Guests had to travel from table to table to pick up clues to solve the murderous mystery. “People figured it out, and the kids especially enjoyed it,” Fisher says. Google “live Clue game” to get the details.
Band Together
Liven up the dance floor with a local band. Music from the 2000s is on trend for millennial weddings, and Smart Mouth (smartmouthmke.com) fits the bill. Expect tunes from the likes of Lady Gaga, Fall Out Boy, Beyoncé and a whole bunch more. Another Milwaukee favorite is Failure to Launch (ftlmke.com), a high-energy cover band with more than two decades of experience gigging at weddings, playing everything “from Backstreet Boys to Beastie Boys.”
Flashing Film
Spring for a few fast-printing instant cameras (like the Fujifilm Instax Mini) or grab a value pack of disposables. Then arm your guests to be your personal paparazzi for the night. The best part is, they will capture friend-to-friend moments that your professional photographer would never get. At the end of the night, you’ll have a collection of fun candids. Bonus idea: Add a personal touch to your thank you notes by including photos of your guests in each card.

How to plan an out-of-town wedding
IN ADDITION TO OFFERING gorgeous scenery and one-of-a-kind experiences, destination weddings also offer a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to bond over the course of several days.
But before you book flights or lock in a venue, there are several factors you should consider – first and foremost, whether your dream locale is affordable and accessible to the majority of your guests.
“If your guests can afford a weeklong trip to Italy, awesome, do it, but if they can’t, you can’t expect them to be there,” says wedding and event planner Catherine Campo of Spellbinding Soirées. “Also think about accessibility. Is [the destination] near an airport? Can guests drive if they’re unable to fly? Is your grandma who’s in a walker able to get to the ceremony location?”
Some couples livestream the wedding or make a video so nobody misses out. For convenience, consider an allinclusive resort, where you can choose a one-stop-shop package that may include a wedding planner. But before signing the contract, review it for hidden costs in food and beverage minimums, approved vendors and minimum number of nights booked. “If you have to have a $6,000 food and beverage minimum, you’re not going to do that for 20 guests,” says Campo. “All-inclusive resorts have restrictions on vendors you can use. … [They] can be more expensive than another local vendor or a vendor traveling from your hometown.”
One major way to save money is in the date. “In the busy season in the Caribbean it’s going to be a lot more expensive than the off season. They upcharge everything,” says Campo, adding that getting married on a weekday is typically more economical.
3 Easy-Access Ideas
DOOR COUNTY, WISCONSIN
Craving a beachside ceremony or a farm-chic setting? Door County is an approximately three-hour drive from Milwaukee, with miles of gorgeous shoreline, cherry and apple orchards, family-owned farms and cute cabin rentals. Host a ceremony for 20-30 guests at the Norwegian stavkirke-style Boynton Chapel on Lawrence University’s Björklunden campus tucked into the woods near Baileys Harbor (lawrence.edu). The ultra-modern Donald and Carol Kress Pavilion (kresspavilion.org) in Egg Harbor accommodates 150 people. Its wraparound deck is perfect for viewing amazing sunsets.
ARIZONA
PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO
Hugging the Pacific Ocean, the weather’s always gorgeous here – although the dry season from November through May is a favorite. Avoid the sight-unseen conundrum with Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta (hyatt.com), an all-inclusive resort flaunting 10 bars, restaurants and lounges. Its $500 two-night getaway can be credited to your eventual wedding. Venues range from 500 people on the beach with table service and a dance floor to 80 people in the glass-walled oceanfront penthouse – or even as few as 10 people.
Direct four-hour flights from Milwaukee to Phoenix make accessing this desert destination a breeze – and you’re unlikely to get rained out. One Milwaukee couple recently hosted their wedding in Apache Junction, about 40 minutes from Phoenix, where The Paseo (thepaseovenue.com) is a popular venue for many reasons: it’s private, boasts outdoor and indoor spaces, has an on-site coordinator, and is at the foot of the Superstition Mountains.

The onIcingthe Cake
An old-timey, intricate decorating style is making a comeback.
NOT LONG AGO, if you wanted your wedding cake to be of the moment, you’d have nixed the buttercreampiped scrolls, swags and flowers –anything that smacked of excess – for iced simplicity.
Well, the era of minimalistic cakes is over. Welcome (back) to the Lambeth age. In 1934, American cake decorator Joseph Lambeth helped popularize an ornate decorating technique by publishing a book about it.
Milwaukee baker MK Drayna, who owns the specialty cake business Whisk Chick, embraces this maximalist trend. “It’s very traditional and old-school,” says Drayna, who credits her culinary arts training at MATC for giving her the decorating precision necessary for this “over-piped” style. Drayna’s Lambeth cake orders took off after she started posting videos of her work on TikTok.
Modern Lambeth is less stuffy and more playful than the 20th-century version. Yes, elegant monochrome white cakes are still popular, but bakers are also using bold colors (green, periwinkle, red) and making romantic cake shapes (hearts, of course) with whimsical toppings like fresh cherries. For a neo-traditional bride, Lambeth offers a gorgeous option.
THE MILWAUKEE ATHLETIC CLUB

Some people say that it’s the most important dress you’ll ever wear. And there are so many boxes it needs to check – flattering, expressive of your style and photogenic, just to name a few. That’s a lot to ask of a dress. These local brides share how they found the gowns of their dreams – and offer tips so you can, too.

Molly
Before she went dress shopping, Molly Mueller had already picked out her dream gown. “I found it online and told [the store] I’d like it to be one of the dresses I try on,” she says.
With her mother, sister and bridal party in tow, they made a pilgrimage to Anthropologie in Minneapolis. Mueller slipped into the gown she had been eyeing and fell in love.
“It fit me in a very flattering way in all the right places. I could picture myself getting married in it,” says Mueller. Another plus: the design meshed well with the aesthetic of the historic venue.
“It wasn’t the most formal gown, but it was able to show my personality while also being formal. It was the vibe that I was going for.”
Still, to ensure this was the best option, she tried on three other dresses that day. But the first one was the one – and she loved it so much she opted not to change into another dress as part of her wedding-day events. This meant hemming it to one length for greater mobility and doing without a bustle and train.
In the end, it worked out perfectly. “I had the one dress that worked for all the events going on during that day,” says Mueller.
Leila
Honoring her Moroccan heritage in her wedding was important for Leila Laasiri. Festivities included a pre-wedding henna night at South Shore Pavilion. For that occasion, she wore a red-and-gold dress her mother had custom made in Marrakesh. “Red is a very dominant color in my life. I wanted that articulated in the dress. Having touches of gold wrap around the dress, in a very delicate way, was also important to me. I wanted something that was not too tight. I wanted to be able to dance in it,” she says.
Post-ceremony, “I wanted pattern and something to bounce off the lighting, a little party,” Laasiri says.
But for the wedding ceremony itself, Laasiri wanted something “simple and elegant, in silk or satin.” She found what she was looking for in a Chicago boutique, the name of which she no longer remembers. Laasiri’s sister was in town, and they just happened to wander into the shop. “When my sister and I walked in, I said, ‘I’ll never buy anything in here.’ There were 12 dresses on mannequins and that was it,” she says. “It was the third dress I tried. I just knew the second I put it on. The hair on my arms stood up. My eyes started filling with water.”
Looking back, Laasiri ended up pleased with all three of her dresses. “I wanted to feel like myself. I knew I was not going to be able to find one dress to capture everything. That’s not who I am,” she says. “I thought about it for a year before I even started.”

Personality is as important as pics. “The photographer is the only vendor who will be literally in your face the entire day,” says Farr. “If you don’t really want to hang out with your florist, it doesn’t matter, but if you find your photographer abrasive or annoying, it can really ruin your day.”

Choosing a stylist
If style is crucial to you, shell out the money for a trial before you book. It’ll run you $100-$150, but “it’s totally worth it,” says wedding planner Heather Farr. Stylists book up fast; schedule a trial six months or more before your wedding so you have time to book a new person, if need be.
