A Better Way to Move
With a personal touch and boutique service, Smart Moves has been helping people thrive in their new homes for over 20 years.
Moving can be difficult. There are treasured belongings to sort through, a new space to plan out, the hassle of boxes and hauling. In 2003, Sue Wiske founded Smart Moves to make the process easier for people. Now her daughter, Melinda Stuart , runs the move management company, which has carved out a niche providing a personalized boutique moving experience. This can involve a move to a new space, downsizing into a more manageable home, or helping people rethink their current space to make it function better for their current wants and needs.
Smart Moves’ comprehensive services include sorting, packing, moving coordination, unpacking, organizing and setting up – all designed to help clients navigate one of life’s most significant transitions. The approach is twofold: combine logistical expertise with empathetic service.
“Compassion is at the core of what we do,” says Stuart. “We start every project with a complimentary consultation. It’s our chance to really listen to clients and understand their needs.” This initial meeting helps establish goals, build trust and lay the foundation for a personalized right-sizing plan.
Sorting through belongings and choosing what to hold on to can be an emotional and difficult process. Stuart and her team help clients and their families take inventory of their belongings and make decisions about what to keep. They then collaborate with industry partners to donate, recycle or get rid of any belongings that are no longer wanted or needed.

“We talk a lot about how to keep the memory of something while letting go of the physical object, so they can hold on to what’s truly important. We’re always ready to meet them wherever they are in their journey,” says Stuart.
As a member of the National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers (NASMM), Smart Moves most often serves seniors, but recently the company has expanded to include families and younger people looking for full-service relocation.
“Over the last couple years, we were noticing we would move someone, and then their kids would be moving, and they’d say, ‘Well, we’d like this full-service type of moving as well,’” Stuart says. “And so now we’ve opened it up so we can help anyone.”
The team of experts measures each client’s new space, along with
couches, tables, armoires and other large pieces of furniture to create a customized floorplan. The sorting process ensures that everything that is moved will fit and have a new home. Additional decorating services can be added on as well – the Smart Moves team hangs artwork, helps choose new items for the home and more.
“The best part of the job is the reveal at the end of the day,” says Stuart. “When the client arrives in their new home and the pictures are on the wall, the bed’s made, and it feels like home. People can feel that sense of relief of being able to embrace their new place and enjoy it.”
