St. Camillus

On March 9, St. Camillus Life Plan Community opened its new East Residence Independent Living expansion. After breaking ground in 2019, the day marked the culmination of over two years of work. The East Residence was constructed by Gilbane Building Company and designed by HGA. The building has 168 spacious apartments, Mansfelds fine dining restaurant, a pub, art gallery, theater, Revitalize Wellness center with exercise studios and a pool, an outdoor pickleball court and more. The East Residence closes the final chapter in the expansion of our Life Plan Community,” says Shannon Angell, St. Camillus’ CEO. “We are eager to share our mission and community with over 200 new residents who will now call the East Residence their home.” 66 milwaukeemag.com

SAINT JOHN’S ON THE LAKE

Recently Lucia Klebar, the director of sales and marketing with Saint John’s On The Lake, met with a new resident’s family member. A sudden health issue had forced their loved one to move into the retirement community immediately. “She, very exasperatedly, cried to me, ‘I didn’t plan for this crisis!’” Klebar says. “She was expected to drop everything, including her career, and

swoop in to the rescue.” Situations like that are why Klebar encourages people to plan a move to Saint John’s ahead of time. Some forethought puts the new resident in control, saving stress and frustration for all. And Saint John’s offers access to social groups, committees, recreation, multiple restaurants and more amenities, all within easy distance of many East Side destinations, like the Marcus Center or the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Risk for dental disease increases with age, and subpar dental hygiene can affect other areas of your health as well. “Poor dental health could lead to possible infection and blood disease if it gets severe enough,” says Dr. Bahareh Chagani of Major Dental Clinics of Milwaukee. According to the Mayo Clinic, gum disease (periodontitis) is associated with an increased risk in heart disease, and bacterial infection in the blood stream caused by bad dental hygiene can affect heart valves as well. “As they get older, people should look out for gum recession, plaque buildup and potential bone loss,” Chagani says. “Gum health and periodontic pockets are very important to maintain throughout life.” Chagani suggests a regular exam as often as every three months, if you have had serious dental issues in the past, and at least twice a year otherwise to avoid the potentially severe consequences of poor dental hygiene.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

Uterine cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, but it can be effectively treated and has a five-year survival rate of 81%. Like all cancers, early detection is crucial. “Uterine cancer often first presents with abnormal vaginal bleeding,” says Dr. Barbara Buttin, a gynecologic oncologist with Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Chicago. “For an older woman, any bleeding should be checked in the context of a cancer risk.” Women who reach menopause at a late age should be aware this is a risk factor for uterine cancer. They can reduce that risk by taking oral contraceptive pills, which eliminate hormonal abnormalities, watching

their weight and maintaining a healthy blood sugar level. Since there’s no screening test for uterine cancer, like a mammogram for breast cancer, having a yearly gynecologic exam and monitoring irregular bleeding is crucial for detection. For patients diagnosed with uterine cancer, surgically removing the uterus and cervix can prevent the cancer from spreading. Any woman with a known or suspected gynecologic cancer should be evaluated and treated by a gynecologic oncologist from the start, if possible, Buttin says. Research suggests that women with gynecologic cancers who are treated by a gynecologic oncologist have better outcomes and chances for survival than those who are not.

Having a plan for a funeral can save loved ones a lot of frustration and pain. Relatives of the recently deceased often tell Mark Krause of Krause Funeral Homes that they didn’t know what their loved one wanted for a funeral. “Planning ahead eliminates the uncertainty and stress,” he says. Krause Funeral Home is known for crafting unique services, tailored to an individual’s personality. From the big decisions, like whether to hold a religious service, to smaller touches like the choice of music, photos to display and any readings the deceased would like done. “By making these decisions beforehand with a funeral home, we can achieve a unique, personalized celebration of your life,” Krause says.

PLANNING AHEAD

Eye Care After 50 over age 50 keeps climbing, we are seeing an increase in age-related eye diseases like cataracts (cloudy vision), glaucoma (loss of side vision), diabetic retinopathy (loss of crisp vision) and macular degeneration or AMD (loss of central vision),” says Dr. Michael Raciti of Eye Care Specialists ophthalmology practice. But it isn’t all bad news. With new advances in diagnosis and treatment, these problems can be addressed quickly and effectively. “In our practice, we have OCT laser scanners that work like a CT scan to detect, track and treat vision-threatening diseases – often before symptoms or damage occurs,” Raciti explains. “We commonly use laser procedures for a number of conditions, including reducing the need for prescription glaucoma drops. We perform hundreds of specialized medication injections each week to protect, and sometimes even improve, the sight of diabetic and AMD patients. And cataract patients are home resuming activities within just hours of surgery with a choice of implants that can reduce their need for glasses.” The key to maintaining the best possible vision beyond age 50 is to make sure you schedule regular eye exams every two years. “Unfortunately, most people aren’t motivated to make an eye appointment unless they notice a problem – and sometimes not even then,” says Raciti. “Don’t delay or deny. Many sight-threatening conditions, such as glaucoma and diabetes, have no warning signs and can be masked by good vision in the other eye. Schedule today to protect your vision for tomorrow.” ◆
