How many years of individual experience (not combined with others in their practice) do they have? Do they have special certifications or training? Are they a solo or team practitioner? A team structure has the advantage of enabling the sharing of questions, ideas and techniques between doctors, as well as 24-hour back-up coverage from another qualified MD. Where do they call home? Doctors who live in the same communities where they work often have a greater commitment to and stake in the community. Some practitioners actually live in other cities or states and only travel back and forth to the Milwaukee area to do surgery – leaving support staff to handle the majority of care. Were they voted “Top Doctors” by their peers? The experience and trust of other doctors is validating. Do they routinely co-manage care and provide patient and professional educational materials and training? Are options presented that fit your specific medical needs, lifestyle and budget? Do they accept your insurance? Are out-of-pocket costs explained? Are you being pressured to accept treatments or devices (like special cataract lens implants) that are beyond your comfort, needs or means? If so, seek a second opinion.
