The Parade of Homes Hits a Milestone For 75 years, the Metropolitan Builders Association has showcased the latest in homebuilding and decorating. By EVERETT SULLIVAN

n 1945, the Metropolitan Builders Association of Greater Milwaukee, then known as the Milwaukee Builders Association, was entering its second year since starting an independent organization. The small group opened an office on Bluemound Road and launched the first ever Parade of Homes. “It started with a few of our members that wanted an opportunity to showcase the homebuilding industry in this area – the styles, the personalities, what’s new for building homes,” says Kathy Raab, the Executive Director of the MBA. “And now 75 years later, here we are.” The first Parade brought together local builders to showcase their latest creations. Displaying the houses was a way to encourage home ownership and display the builders’ skill to the public, who typically had little opportunity to explore new construction. In postwar America, homebuilding was on the verge of its greatest boom, and the Parade of Homes concept quickly gained

popularity, first hopping the Minnesota border to the Twin Cities in 1948, and from there spreading to cities across the country. Over the decades, Milwaukee’s Parade never missed a year, making it not only the first, but also the longest-running Parade of Homes in the nation. It evolved to encompass more of southeastern Wisconsin, expanding out to Waukesha and Ozaukee and becoming a way to showcase the different neighborhoods as well. This year’s Parade includes neighborhoods in Menomonee Falls, Franklin and Lisbon and homes built by 16 different homebuilders. Visitors get to see the latest in homebuilding, decor, design and home technology. “The builders stay on top of new trends, new ways of building,” Raab says. In recent years, the Parade has featured energy-efficiency and green homes to meet a growing demand and promote sustainable living. The lineup of homes offers a wide variety of options for every homebuilder and has also evolved to address some of

the major home ownership trends, such as downsizing and aging in place, for older and retired adults looking to find a new home to fit their needs. The MBA and the Parade of Homes continue to grow to meet Milwaukee’s needs, and Raab points to how different the organization and industry are since the first Parade three quarters of a century ago. “Seventy-five years ago it was a very male industry – there weren’t any female homebuilders,” she says. “But now our President this year is a female homebuilder. We’ve come a long way. As an association, we promote diversity, we promote women in the field. We want the best of the best.” ◆

No Two Homes Are Alike MBA Executive Director Kathy Raab talks about what to expect at this year’s Parade. By EVERETT SULLIVAN

F

or the past two years, Kathy Raab has been the executive director of the Metropolitan Builders Association of Greater Milwaukee, where she has helped lead the Parade of Homes. This year’s Parade presented exceptional challenges with ongoing coronavirus concerns and the need to keep the Parade safe. Despite the pandemic, the demand for homebuilding and remodeling is as high as ever. With the work of Milwaukee’s top building and design firms on display, Raab expects this year’s Parade to be as popular as always. What do people experience when they come out to the Parade of Homes? No two homes are alike. You don’t have to be building a home to appreciate them. People will go just for ideas. They’ll look at paint colors, trim, cabinetry and different countertops and ways to remodel their basements. They’ll look at landscaping and sunrooms and garages. People go just to look at furniture and accessories and get ideas for decorating. We also feature new technology, especially in appliances. People come to get to know the builders, too. They’re all great builders. You just need to find the one you match best with, that you want to put this huge investment in their hands. Some people go year after year because it takes them a while to be ready to build their house and really know what they want in it. What are some popular homebuilding features this year? Bathrooms and kitchens are always highlights. The home school and home office are particularly big this year. Media rooms are always popular – the big screen TVs with the theater seats. Now there are also

a lot of smaller flex rooms, often near the entrance, that people will use as offices or dens or playrooms. Right now with homeschooling going on, people are setting them up as little schools. Will the Parade be any different this year due to the coronavirus? This year’s going to be very different because of the health and safety guidelines that we’ll follow for COVID. It will be a cashless system. People will need to buy tickets ahead of time online that will get them into the sites, and they will also need to sign a waiver. Everything will be sanitized. We’ll have masks available. Areas that are busier will be disinfected often, and each site will be deep-cleaned every night. What do you think keeps bringing crowds to the Parade? The finished product – these completed homes. The time and talent and vision that goes into creating the building plan, the design, all the way through the completion – it just amazes me. We’re really excited to showcase what we’ve got. The construction industry is strong, and I think it will help us recover in this economy. People are anxious to get out. They’re anxious to build. They’re anxious to remodel. We just finished up our Spring Tour – over 60 sites open for three weekends – and the attendance was great. So we’re hoping we’ll be close to our average attendance of over 35,000 attendees. ◆
