JULIE ALLEN’S CAREER began with remarkable success in Disney leadership, thriving within a dynamic team, building strong relationships, tackling challenging work, and finding fulfillment. However, after relocating with her husband, Rich Allen, a new opportunity proved to be a sharp contrast.
“On my first day, I knew it wasn’t the right fit,” Julie recalls. “Looking back, a more intentional hiring process would likely have steered me elsewhere.”
These contrasting experiences became the catalyst for her life’s work. “My passions led me to executive search, where I believed I could establish a better way for companies to recruit leaders who uniquely fit their needs, goals, and values. With purpose and passion, I set out to solve a problem I experienced firsthand.”
In 2003, after several years in executive search, she founded Allen Partners. Inspired by her father’s death from heart failure, Julie ventured into the Medtech industry, collaborating with companies at the forefront of life-saving technologies. Rich joined her in 2005, solidifying their firm’s foundation and cultivating a thriving client base.
“We’ve built a reputation of excellence, representing each company with credibility, knowledge and enthusiasm, and every candidate with a deep understanding, seeing the ‘whole person.’”
However, Julie identified another crucial need. “Our executive searches are nuanced to meet the specific needs of our company clients, focusing primarily on their requirements unless an individual becomes a candidate in the process. Yet, many confident, experienced leaders contemplating ‘what’s next’ were seeking my perspective and thought partnership to help them discover, discern and articulate the most promising path to explore. They wanted clarity on their aspirations and a strategic partner to achieve them. That’s where I came in.”
This realization led her to launch career coaching in 2006, designed for ambitious leaders considering the next phase in their career and life. “I’ve found that, like myself, people want to make an impact, find fulfillment in their career, and work with people they admire and respect. Through my coaching, you’ll deepen self-discovery, articulate your unique value and transform your goals, visions, and aspirations into reality.”

IN NOVEMBER, SHERMAN PHOENIX celebrated five years in business. The entrepreneurship hub opened in Sherman Park in 2018, in the shell of a former bank which was burned during civil unrest. It has since become a showcase for Black-owned businesses, housing over 50 vendors since opening. Businesses at Sherman Phoenix range from food and drink vendors to wellness services and clothing shops, and much more.
“We’re a vibrant hub for entrepreneurs,” says Dr. Stacia Thompson, the president and CEO. “You can feel the collaborative spirit when you walk inside.”
The organization offers support, mentoring and coaching for business owners through its Phoenix Rising program. Through workshops, technical assistance and more, the nonprofit helps businesses grow, add jobs and generate economic growth. Sherman Phoenix’s Community Business Academy just began teaching its first cohort of students this year, and the nonprofit also partnered with Professional Dimensions to launch the Women and Moms Entrepreneurship Network, providing resources and support for female entrepreneurs.
With a focus on mental, physical and financial wellness, Sherman Phoenix also offers a wide variety of cultural programming open to the community, including its Front Porch live music series, Veterans Self Care Sundays, Monthly Youth Trap Therapy, Community Baby Showers and more.
A capital campaign is currently underway to raise funds for adding more space to house additional businesses, and to expand the services and support Sherman Phoenix offers. “When you step inside Sherman Phoenix, it’s like no one is a stranger,” Thompson says. “We call it the ‘Sherman Phoenix effect.’ We have a culture of support and community.”

IN 2023, BILTRITE FURNITURE – LEATHER – MATTRESSES was named Retailer of the Year 2023 by the Home Furnishings Association. BILTRITE is the first and only retailer in Wisconsin to ever receive this national honor.
“For 96 years, BILTRITE has sought to improve and elevate how they do business,” the HFA said in a statement. “They always come away with new ways to up their game. So, it’s no surprise that their attention to their customers and their community has garnered BILTRITE this honor.” The award was judged by a panel of home industry professionals, who evaluated nominees based on customer experience, company culture, social responsibility, innovation, adaptability, industry contribution, marketing and achievements.
“We are very honored and humbled,” said Randi Schachter, a fourth-generation family member at BILTRITE. “We have come a long way since 1928 and look forward to continuing to be a locally and family-owned metro Milwaukee-area institution.”
BILTRITE, which started out of a small storefront on Third and Garfield nearly a century ago, now boasts a 45,000-square foot showroom in Greenfield, where it keeps thousands of items in stock, including affordable, better-quality furniture and mattresses, mostly USA- and Amish-made as well as hard to find flip-able,
two-sided mattresses and a large selection of small-scale furniture. BILTRITE also offers special and custom-orderable furniture and beats designer showrooms, national chains and online retailers. Free in-store design services are offered. Appointments are preferred! You can call to schedule, or walk-ins are available.
The retailer, which also won Milwaukee Magazine’s Best of the Burbs Readers’ Choice poll for best furniture/home goods store and Best of Milwaukee for furniture store, remains the largest family- and locally owned furniture and mattress store in Wisconsin. BILTRITE is 96 years and four generations strong, celebrating 18 years in their Greenfield location. “We care about each and every one of our customers,” Randi says. “We do what we do because we have a love and a passion for it. We want our customers to have the best experience possible when they come to BILTRITE.”

EARLY THIS YEAR, a stray dog was brought to the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County (HAWS). The staff took him in, gave him the name Papa D, and helped nurse him to health. To address his injuries, he needed an $1,800 surgery, which HAWS paid for. Papa D now requires continued monitoring by HAWS, as future surgery or other medical procedures may be necessary for his injuries to fully heal. “That’s what it means to be an open-admission, no-kill shelter,” says Maggie Tate-Techtmann, HAWS’ executive director. “It means we accept animals regardless of health, breed, temperament.”
HAWS is the only animal shelter in the metro Milwaukee area that is both open-admission and no-kill, and it boasts a 97% return-to-community rate, meaning that nearly all the animals it cares for end up in homes. The shelter has robust training and behavior programs in place to ensure that its animals are prepared to return to the community, including the Canine Task Force that helps dogs with greater needs. A nationwide trend of animals staying in shelters longer also means HAWS’ programs are that much more crucial.
The shelter’s mission extends to education as well – over 12,000 adults and kids participate in HAWS educational programming every year. HAWS’ second location, the Schallock Center for Animals in Delafield, now hosts camps, field
trips and classes. “Our youth programs really cultivate compassion, respect and empathy,” says Tate-Techtmann. “When kids work with shelter animals, what they learn extends into how they interact with each other as they grow into adults and leaders in our community.”
This year, HAWS’ board, led by Betsy DeJaco, approved a new strategic plan that focuses on responsiveness to community needs, including supporting older animal owners, promoting animal welfare and more.
“We shelter not only within our four walls, but also outside as well,” says Tate-Techtmann. “We support our community and are a resource for everyone, to ensure that all the animals in the community are getting the care they need.”

IN 1984, COMEDYSPORTZ formed in Milwaukee. The fledgling improv group took a novel approach to comedy – treating it like a sport. For each match, a referee would oversee a competition between two teams of improv comedians, fighting to one-up each other in laughs.
The competitive, hilarious approach proved to be a hit. Forty years later, ComedySportz (CSz) has over 24 locations around the world and has performed more than 16,000 shows.
“From our in-house matches every weekend to our road shows, we have entertained easily over 100,000 people over the years,” says Dick Chudnow, the group’s founder. “Our success comes from our firm belief that comedy is for everyone.”
CSz’s flagship location in Walker’s Point remains a cornerstone of the comedy community in the city. In addition to its ComedySportz matches, the theater hosts over 100 improv, sketch, stand-up and musical productions every year.

FOR OVER 30 YEARS, Danceworks MKE has been a staple in Milwaukee’s arts and culture scene. This year, Julieane Cook took over as executive director of the dance performance and education organization. “I am thrilled to be joining Danceworks at this moment in our history because of the strong foundation we have to continue bringing joy, health and creativity to the community,” Cook says. “Our education programs, studio classes and collaborative performances are making an impact in Milwaukee and it is so exciting to see. We can’t and won’t stop there!”
Danceworks’ professional performance company, Danceworks Performance MKE, is led by artistic director Christal Wagner. The company performs a full season every year and often collaborates with local artists. The organization also offers 70 weekly classes in its Downtown studio and satellite location at the Jewish Community Center, with options for people of all ages and abilities. Outside of its studio, it provides programs to schools across the Milwaukee area, reaching over 80 in the past year. Its signature education program, Mad Hot Rhythm, is designed for students in
fourth through sixth grades, who learn tap, samba, African/hip-hop fusion and more dance styles. Since 2006, around 35,000 students have been through the program. Danceworks Generations focuses on younger students, pairing second- and third-grade students with seniors in living centers. And for even younger students in K5 and first grade, Danceworks offers an Emoji Yogi program, teaching them how to use yoga, breathing exercises and storytelling to improve emotional regulation. These programs are largely supported by donations, which keep the cost low and accessible for students. “Our arts community at large needs us,” says Cook, “and I am ready to jump into the work advocating for arts funding and accessibility so that every person in Milwaukee has the opportunity to experience the transformative power of dance.”

FOUNDED IN 2012, Country Travel Discoveries handcrafts unique, off-thebeaten-path vacation experiences across the U.S. and abroad. In the 12 years since their founding, the Elm Grove-based tour planners have established themselves as an expert source for unique trips across the globe. Destinations range from near to far, including New England’s coastline, Route 66’s iconic roadway, New Zealand’s mountainous landscape, Holland’s fields of blooming tulips and more.
“Our travelers want to see iconic sights, but they also want unique experiences that only we can offer,” says Andrea Brooks, president of Country Travel Discoveries.
That means their tours include one-of-a-kind excursions discovered by Country Travel Discoveries’ team. Recent examples include a tour of Killarney, Ireland, where travelers met the mayor and walked in the local St. Patrick’s Day Parade; an exclusive visit to the oldest polo club in the country in Rhode Island; and a private river cruise through Holland and Belgium.
Country Travel Discoveries handles the flights, lodging, details and logistics of each trip. “You just book and enjoy,” says Brooks. Unlike their competitors, the CTD team doesn’t plan their trips from behind a computer – they’re always either out traveling to a destination or speaking with local contacts on the ground.
“We have local contacts across the world,” says Nan Delwiche, vice president of operations. “They make sure every aspect of the trip is up to the highest standard – and they help us find those hidden experiences that make our tours special.”

THANKS TO THE Ellen and Joe Checota MATC Scholarship Program, Zion Bullock is able to receive a college education at no cost to him. The scholarship covers Bullock’s tuition, books, course fees, equipment, supplies and housing. First started in 2022, the program has already helped hundreds of students afford an MATC education and get the credentials they need to join the workforce.
Bullock is an artist who enrolled in MATC’s entrepreneurship program to learn business skills to help monetize his passion. “I feel so much more professionally developed because of the real-world experience I get at MATC,” he says.
Sherrie Williams, who earned her cosmetology degree from MATC, is a successful entrepreneur herself, first opening a hair salon in 2008 and then launching a line of hair products designed for people of color. Today, her line produces nearly 30 products, which can be found at major retailers including Walmart and Fresh Thyme. Froedtert’s hospital system is now using her products, as well. “MATC taught me a lot. The instructors really took their time with me,” she says.
Eric Gama is a graduate of MATC’s Uniquely Abled Academy, a program launched in 2021, which gives students with autism hands-on training to become computer numerical control operators. Gama now works as a manufacturing assistant at Allis Manufacturing.
During his time at MATC, Gama received over 500 hours of instruction, including technical training to interpret engineering drawings, measure parts, operate machine equipment safely and more. He also took career readiness and social skills classes, which help students write resumes and prepare for interviews. “I really enjoyed it. I was always happy to go to class,” Gama says.

MILWAUKEE MAKERS MARKET STARTED nine years ago in a parking lot in Bay View.
Ryan Laessig, the founder and an artist himself, brought together a dozen or so local artists and makers to sell their wares.
What started small has since grown dramatically.
Instead of a parking lot, the Milwaukee Makers Market now fills large venues, including Discovery World, The Ivy House and the Milwaukee Historical Society. And instead of only a few dozen makers, there are nearly 180 accepted small businesses. The Milwaukee Makers Market is now the largest, longest-running market in the city.
“I think the biggest reason Milwaukee Makers Market has grown the way it has is because we’re genuine,” Laessig says. “We care about all our makers; we care about supporting neighborhoods and communities. And we’ll never charge admission for someone to come and shop from these amazing local artists and makers.”
Milwaukee Makers Market hosts six more events in 2024, and will be
hosting about a dozen next year, as well, with the latest dates and locations updated on milwaukeemakersmarket.com. Makers run the gamut from artisan candles to clothes, crafts, bakery and more. In July, the market hosted its first festival at Discovery World, an event Laessig is looking forward to bringing back next year, too.
“We’re the one-stop shop local experience,” Laessig says. “You’re definitely going to find amazing things to buy, but when you come to the market, the experience is way more than just shopping. You’re meeting people, hearing the amazing stories of these makers, and becoming a part of this creative community.”

FEH DESIGN’S HISTORY STRETCHES BACK to 1898, when Andrew Foss founded the company in Minnesota.
In the 126 years since, FEH Design now has multiple locations, an expansive architecture, structural engineering and interior design team, and a large portfolio of projects across the Midwest. And last year, the architecture firm moved its Wisconsin office to Milwaukee.
“We’re really excited about our new home in Milwaukee,” says Kevin Eipperle, the firm’s president. “We’re bringing decades of experience and expertise, and we’re looking forward to learning more about the community.”
The firm specializes in public and commercial buildings. Its wide portfolio includes schools, libraries, public safety, municipalities, community centers, corporate offices and more.
“We believe in the power of design to tell stories and create communities,” says Cole Henson, principal architect. “FEH Design will bring your vision to life with our unique blend of creativity and expertise.”
FEH Design also offers a unique approach to the design process that incorporates real-time client feedback. In the firm’s Spark Session Workshops, which last one to two days, the firm’s team meets in person with a client, listens to their ideas, and drafts potential options on the spot. Clients provide immediate feedback for the architects and designers to respond to, as they draft the plans.
For public projects, such as libraries or schools, community members are welcome to participate in the session as well. By the end of the session, a definitive plan is drafted. “Every client we work with is an opportunity to learn more about their organization, their mission, and the communities they serve,” Henson says. “Milwaukee is an exciting place to be, and we look forward to designing the future of Wisconsin’s schools, libraries, businesses and more.”

The financial planning firm, founded by advisor Melinda Wilke, specializes in wealth management for medical professionals, high-level executives and business owners. JILLIAN GIBAS ISN’T a run-of-the-mill travel agent.
Her travel agency, JLJ Travel, doesn’t book one-size-fits-all trips and cookie-cutter itineraries. Each trip with JLJ Travel is personalized to match the exact desires of the client.
“I listen to every client’s interests, their goals, and craft the trip to match them,” she says.
For example, she booked a getaway for a couple who recently became empty-nesters. They are foodies and wine lovers, and so Gibas designed a second honeymoon of sorts in northern France, where they will be enjoying some of the best food and wine in the world.
Another recent example – a family of four was celebrating both a high school graduation and a wedding anniversary. Gibas prepared a hiking trip to the mountains of Switzerland that matches the interests of the outdoorsy family, while adding a more relaxing few days along the Italian Riviera and Lake Como.
This year and next, she’s aiming to expand her offerings to include custom safaris as well as destination weddings.
Gibas handles the necessary legwork for every client, booking flights, finding hotels and more.
“Travel can be overwhelming,” she says. “From the beginning to the end, I’m taking care of the budget, the reservations, the schedule. That way, you can actually have fun and enjoy the trip without all the worry and work.”
She also provides expertise – whether that’s knowing the best season to visit a certain city or adding off-the-beaten-path restaurants and shops to an itinerary.
“This isn’t just going to be a trip out of a guidebook or an online search,” she says. “This is a trip that was made for you.”

WHEN KIM LAMANSKY was 16, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Her family didn’t have a place to stay near the hospital where she received treatment, and so her father bought a 15-foot camper van. “We’d drive her back and forth to the Mayo Clinic every day and then go back to this campground and stay in this camper,” Lamansky says. “It was very challenging.”
Decades later, when Lamansky heard that Kathy’s House was searching for a new president and CEO, she remembered those long days and nights and how difficult it was on her family. She enthusiastically pursued the opportunity to lead the organization and was officially named president and CEO in March.
Kathy’s House is a hospital guest house that provides affordable lodging and support for families who need to travel to Milwaukee for medical care. Without Kathy’s House, many families could not access the care they need. Often, patients who are undergoing clinical trials or receiving advanced care for serious illnesses like cancer are required to stay close by the hospital for weeks or months at a time.
“Kathy’s House is an incredible blessing for families,” says Lamansky, who was most
recently the executive director of a free medical clinic in Illinois. “At Kathy’s House, they have access to a kitchen, dining room, laundry, library, fitness center and more.”
Kathy’s House opened in 2001 and now operates a 38-room house near Froedtert Hospital, with a full suite of accommodations. “For our guests, we become a second home,” says Lamansky. “That’s thanks to our phenomenal guest services team. They take the time and make the effort to really be there for each of our guests. These little touches are so meaningful when someone is going through something difficult.”
The little touches are just one piece of the larger puzzle that Kathy’s House is working to solve in providing access to care. Lamansky hopes to continue finding new ways to expand and improve Kathy’s House services and grow the nonprofit’s donor base so that it can continue to serve more families for many years to come.

MARCUS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER is a cultural hub for Milwaukee. Whether it’s hosting dozens of local, regional and national performances each year, putting on vibrant experiences like Rainbow Summer, or producing cultural events with partners across the city, MPAC’s impact is felt throughout the community. “Our culture is made up of many different people, with unique voices and perspectives,” says Anthony Smith, the director of community partnerships. “At the Marcus Performing Arts Center, we offer cultural programming to reflect and celebrate those diverse voices. That is our commitment to the community, so that everyone can see themselves here.”
As a nonprofit organization, MPAC relies on corporate, foundation and individual support to provide its diverse cultural programming. It also partners with many local organizations to plan cultural programming and events that reflect and celebrate the diversity of Milwaukee. Willie Jude, executive director of the Milwaukee Public Schools Foundation, champions the cultural programming amongst his colleagues. An average student matinee brings in 1,600 students –often providing an important first exposure to the arts. Through her role with the Milwaukee County Office of Equity, Jacqueline Zeledon participates in the MPAC’s
annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration, a longstanding citywide celebration that showcases student talent.
MPAC plans many such events throughout the year, each with the support and collaboration of community partners. Diana Billstrom of the Bay View Community Center participates in the planning committee for the annual César Chávez Celebration. Future plans include a Native Celebration, and Dan Terrio of the Milwaukee County Department of Human Resources will serve on that planning committee.
Recently Smith received a Milwaukee County Health and Equity Champion Award for his work with MPAC, collaborating with organizations and helping to create and provide opportunities for access to the transformational power of the performing arts.

FOR FOUR YEARS RUNNING, Marquette University High School’s Science Olympiad team has won the Wisconsin state competition. The reigning champs placed in the national competition each year as well, and finished 10th in the nation this year.
Science Olympiad competes in multiple educational events – from building a robot to identifying plant species to studying microbes. MUHS offers Science Olympiad opportunities at both the varsity and JV level. “The team is incredible. It’s a group of very bright students, with great coaches, who have
bonded and challenge each other,” says Roxanne Peelen, a mother of a Science Olympiad student.
Science Olympiad is just one of the many college prep opportunities for MUHS students to pursue across the academic and STEM spectrum. Team members compete at science tournaments nationwide and have attended colleges that include the University of Chicago, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Yale, Stanford and UW-Madison.
“We have the support of very qualified faculty,” says head Science Olympiad
coach Nicole Williams. “Our administration has said, ‘What do you need? How can we help? What’s next?’”
“Being a part of a high school academic team like Science Olympiad has challenged our son to reach beyond the classroom with research,” says Peelen. “They’ve set huge goals all year long as they have traveled the country competing at top competitions. The state championships and the competitions in Hawaii or at MIT are amazing, but the best part is the lasting friendships.”

FIVE YEARS AGO, Kizzie Bland started New Beginnings Adult Learning Center. As a nurse, she knew the benefits of pursuing a health care career – but she also knew how difficult it could be for a working adult to get into the field.
“When someone tries to go back to school and they’re working at the same time, taking care of their family, it can almost seem impossible,” Bland says. “I wanted to create a program that works for people who are facing that.”
New Beginnings offers health certification programs for certified nursing assistants, clinical medical assistants, pharmacy technicians and courses in phlebotomy and community-based residential facility work. In order to meet the scheduling needs of the students, the courses are split between self-paced remote work and flexible in-person class hours at New Beginning’s Burleigh Street location.
“They’re short-term, fast-paced courses that provide convenience and hands-on skills,” Bland says.
Courses are taught by licensed nurses and health care professionals, and Bland often recruits ones who went through similar mid-career changes as their students. “Our instructors have been through that struggle. They understand, and they can help,” she says. Students also receive clinical experience through New Beginnings, spending time at hospitals and clinics to learn.
“I’m passionate about health care, and I love to help people elevate themselves and discover new things,” Bland says. “With New Beginnings, I want people to see that it doesn’t have to be a hard decision to go back to school or to make a career change you always wanted.”

ALENA JOLING FOUNDED Moleta: Artisanal Sharpening to set a better standard in the knife sharpening industry. “The philosophy of a lot of other businesses in sharpening is that the customer doesn’t know better and won’t complain about little things,” Joling says. “I started Moleta because I wanted to see higher-quality work. And the response has been incredible.”
In the six years since it launched, the business has built a loyal, growing client base and a reputation for unmatched work. Moleta offers sharpening for knives, gardening tools, scissors and other tools for both individuals and businesses.
This year, Moleta expanded into Better Knife & Kitchen Store in partnership with Wisconsin Cutlery and Kitchen Supply. The store offers the largest selection of knives in the metro Milwaukee area, along with a wide selection of other kitchen gear. And you can walk in for a sharpening appointment anytime – or find Moleta at local farmers markets, including Shorewood and Waukesha.
“It’s important to the community to have a locally owned kitchen store like this,” Joling says. “You can come in, talk to a knowledgeable person, and actually hold a high-quality knife in your hand before you buy.”
Clients often come from out-of-state to bring their blades to Moleta. “We’re particular and meticulous about our work,” Joling says. “We treat knives like the sculptures they are.”

JAYME HEINECK WAS WORKING part-time as a waitress when she met Lori Watt, the founder of IAG Wealth Partners.
Heineck, a recent mother of twins, mentioned that she was taking investment classes on the side. When she was getting close to graduating, Watt suggested coming to IAG to meet with her. That led to a part-time job, then a full-time one, and now Heineck is one of the financial advisors that makes up IAG.
“We have a phenomenal team here,” Heineck says. “We’re all working together to help each other, and ultimately our clients.”
Founded in 1985, IAG is a premier financial planning firm in Southeastern Wisconsin. The firm’s advisors provide customized financial plans for clients, including working toward retirement, creating tax-efficient income plans, setting aside money for philanthropy and other goals.
“Every advisor here works exceptionally hard for their clients,” says Debra Melvin, who joined the team as an advisor 10 years ago after interning for IAG through college.
She is a certified divorce financial analyst and specializes in helping women work through the financial realities of a separation. “Divorce is a big change and
can be a very challenging time. I’m dedicated to helping women make educated decisions as they go through the divorce process so they can move forward in their financial futures with confidence and clarity.”
IAG offers a full suite of financial services, while also tailoring the experience to each client’s personalized needs.
Michael Koerner was an advisor at another firm for 15 years and wasn’t happy with the direction the company was headed. He spoke with Watt and others at IAG about the possibility of joining them and was quickly convinced. “They were the only firm I found that wasn’t just interested
in what assets I could bring to the table,” he says. “They wanted to know about my family, my values. It was actually about serving the client, not just hitting numbers.”

MOVING CAN BE TOUGH – especially if you’re leaving a longtime home.
“Often, when I first meet clients, they look a little bit like a deer in headlights,” says Bruce Nemovitz, founder of Bruce’s Team senior real estate specialists.
“There seems like so many things to do to move, and they have so many treasures in their homes. They’re overwhelmed. Our slogan is ‘Taking you from overwhelmed to I can do this.’”
Nemovitz has spent the past 30 years as a Realtor working with seniors. He and his team specialize in helping seniors sell their home, find a new one, and deal with everything in between. “Folks have often been in their home for many years – there’s a lot of emotion, and it can be difficult,” he says. “We give all of our clients extra care and understanding.”
The team works with contractors across the industry to help their clients with every part of moving, such as consolidating items, downsizing, and furnishing the new space.
They also partner with trusted real estate and elder law attorneys who can navigate the legal complications of estates, wills and more.
“We break the entire process down into understandable and doable steps,” Nemovitz says. “Sometimes people will procrastinate their move until a health or financial crisis happens, and then they have to move very quickly.
That’s the worst thing you can do – it’s incredibly stressful on everyone involved. If you plan the move ahead of time, we can help make it easy for you and your family.”

POTAWATOMI CASINO HOTEL HAS BEEN a Milwaukee icon for over 30 years. Since 1991, the entertainment destination has been a premier attraction for gaming, dining, concerts and more.
The past three years have been some of the biggest in Potawatomi history, with the casino hotel investing $190 million to renovate its space. The vast project wrapped up in May, with the opening of Potawatomi’s Sportsbook and Poker Room. The Sportsbook is the largest sports betting venue in the Midwest, with two floors, over 20 televisions, a broadcast booth and over 200 seats with
75 kiosks. The centerpiece is its over-2,000-square-foot LED video wall, which can show over 30 different sporting events at once. The Sportsbook also houses one of Potawatomi’s new dining options, The Kitchen, which serves all-day brunch, wings, desserts and much more – plus 48 beers on tap and 14 specialty cocktails. “It is our priority to bring our guests the next level of gaming, and do so in an inviting and entertaining atmosphere,” says Dominic Ortiz, the CEO and general manager. “In all my years in the gaming industry, the opening of the Sportsbook and Poker Room has to be the most exciting time in my career.”

The Sportsbook marks the last in a long series of major additions, including Cream City Coffee Co., a new Marketplace dining hall, and Rock & Brews Restaurant from KISS founding members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. Potawatomi also added the 1833 Club, a luxurious lounge for its VIP members, and renovated its third-floor gaming area with new table games and slots.
The casino and hotel is also expanding its entertainment options. This summer, Potawatomi hosted its first Potawatomi Amplified Concert Series in its outdoor concert venue, with Snoop Dogg headlining the first blockbuster concert in June.

TWENTY YEARS AGO, Matthew Jahns, a third-generation home builder and remodeler, founded Refined Renovations. He left his job at a larger remodeling firm and set out on his own, gathering a team of like-minded individuals who believed there’s still room in the world for homes made with care and built to last. Two decades later, his team is now an award-winning, full-service firm with expert designers and remodelers, but the ethos remains the same: homes are worth preserving for generations to come.
This year, Refined Renovations is celebrating the company’s 20th year with the launch of its own custom cabinetry company. In 2022, they debuted Refined Interiors, a firm providing interior design services and furnishings. Today, they’re able to offer everything a homeowner may need under one umbrella, and the firm handles everything from single-room remodels to full-home redesigns.
Refined Renovations’ experienced team provides concierge service to each client, guiding them through decisions to bring their vision to life.
“We’re turning the tide away from disposable design,” says Jahns. “Instead, we’re weaving together the past and present with a focus on quality workmanship and enduring materials. Our company is founded on the idea that homes are worth preserving for generations to come – our hope is that 100 years from now, people will still be admiring our craftsmanship.”

MICHAEL RIVERA’S JOURNEY with Rivera & Associates is truly commendable. Over the past 25 years, he has steered the firm’s success, leveraging his Milwaukee roots and strong relationships within the city.
Rivera established Rivera & Associates after graduating from Marquette University in the late ’90s. In its early years, the firm faced the challenge of marketing the 2000 Census to inner-city neighborhoods with historically low response rates. Rivera’s innovative approach involved creating doorknob flyers that residents could easily mail in. This strategy led to remarkably accurate Census counts in those neighborhoods.
Rivera’s firm has collaborated with prominent organizations, including Milwaukee Public Schools, Wisconsin Auto Dealers, Mitchell International Airport, Marquette University, GRAEF, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the City of Milwaukee. The firm’s excellent work has earned it a strong reputation and a loyal client base. Rivera & Associates received an Outstanding Business Award Finalist recognition from the Wisconsin Governor’s Marketplace in both 2016 and 2020. The firm’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident, as it actively seeks a diverse staff to level the playing field and provide opportunities to minority populations.
The firm is currently working with the Milwaukee County Transit System on a strategic plan to market the new CONNECT bus rapid transit as well as with the City of Milwaukee to assist with communications in the lead pipe replacement project to improve everyone’s health and safety. Additionally, the firm is collaborating with Milwaukee Public Schools on its Long Range Facilities plan as well as working with MobiliSE on transit advocacy and improvement efforts.
Rivera has also created a marketing campaign, called “414 All,” centered around inclusion and acceptance in Milwaukee for all. It showcases Milwaukee as welcoming and inclusive of all ages, genders, religions, cultures, ethnicities, orientations and more. “Milwaukee has long had to deal with a negative stereotype of being the most segregated city in the U.S. I believe my positive message would combat that negative stereotype and would attract more residents and businesses to our city,” Rivera says.

FORTY YEARS AGO, Rick and Chris Bartelt took a big leap. Together, the couple founded Bartelt Remodeling in 1984 – and they got married that same year! Over the past four decades, Rick and Chris have turned the company, which started out of their West Milwaukee home, into one of the premier remodeling and design firms in Wisconsin.
“We’re proud to celebrate this milestone anniversary,” Rick says. “After four decades in business, so many of our customers are now repeat and referral. That’s rewarding to see. It means we’ve taken good care of them for years. That’s how we’ve developed our reputation for quality and craftsmanship.”
Bartelt’s residential remodeling philosophy is timelessness, creating spaces that have staying power and go beyond passing trends. The company also builds custom homes. Over the past 40 years, Rick, Chris and their team have built long relationships with industry partners who ensure projects run smoothly – and Bartelt has also expanded, opening Y.E.S. IN 2019, Dr. Thomas G. Korkos, Dr. Mark F. Blake, and Dr. Christopher J. Hussussian founded Illume Cosmetic Surgery and Medspa.
The three expert surgeons brought together an ambitious merger between two of metro Milwaukee’s largest and most successful cosmetic surgery practices to create Illume, a state-of-the-art, multi-location practice. Illume quickly established itself as a premier provider of cosmetic surgery and other beauty services.
“Many in the industry felt that the merger of two major clinics was near impossible to do,” says Dr. Korkos. “This year, we’re celebrating our fifth anniversary. We have proven that not only is it possible, but we have advanced the delivery of aesthetic services regionally.”
Today, Illume is the largest practice of its kind in metro Milwaukee. In addition to offering cosmetic and reconstructive surgery at its nationally accredited in-house surgical centers, the team offers full-service
MKR IS A FULL-SERVICE advertising agency – one that doesn’t just focus on their brands, but on their brands’ audiences.
“Our strongest point of difference is our ability to create meaningful brand experiences for consumers,” says Chris Mortenson, chief executive officer. “When clients make an investment, they expect you to move the dial – it’s ultimately about return on investment. And the best way to do that is to focus on the needs our client brands fulfill in the lives of the people they serve.”
Founded in 1967, MKR has evolved dramatically in its 57 years in business. The agency works with a diverse range of clients across industries and fields to craft
campaigns that achieve results. Their work spans traditional marketing efforts, digital-first campaigns and marketing technology tools that harness data to reach audiences.
“At our core, we do insight-driven work that is surprising – our commitment is to do work that makes you say ‘whoa,’” says Kayla Carmichael, MKR’s chief relationship officer. “We set our clients up to win, and they feel led and supported in their efforts.”
MKR has two locations, one in Milwaukee and one in Indianapolis, and the company has continued to grow and expand. Mortenson and Carmichael
attribute that success largely to the quality of MKR’s team and the strength of their culture.
“We’re large and sophisticated enough to offer the best services and solutions a client could want – but at the same time, we’re small enough that each of our clients has access to our entire team,” Carmichael says.
MKR builds a relationship with each client that serves their individualized needs. “We have an exceptional, intelligent, talented team at every level of the organization,” Mortenson says. “They have the expertise, the knowledge and the drive to continue taking this company to the next level.”
