Milwaukee’s Grand Hotel
A renovation is bringing The Pfister Hotel into its 14th decade in style.
The Pfister Hotel’s legacy is unmatched in Milwaukee. The hotel opened its doors in 1893, billing itself as the “Grand Hotel of the West”. The beautiful Romanesque Revival building was designed by architect Charles Koch, and it quickly drew attention of visitors near and far.
Every United States president since William McKinley in 1899 has stayed at the Pfister. In fact, McKinley brought his entire cabinet with him, making the hotel his “Western White House.” And President John Kennedy used the hotel as his campaign headquarters during the 1960 Wisconsin primary.
Today, the Pfister retains those decades of history, while also providing modern amenities and luxury. “The Pfister is known for its exemplary service – a core philosophy that will continue on for another 100 years and beyond,” says Brandon Drusch, the hotel’s managing director and general manager. “Our Pfister team is guided by ‘Salve,’ which means ‘a warm welcome and a fond farewell.’ It is both a pledge to every guest who enters The Pfister as well as a credo that each of our associates is committed to delivering excellence at every turn.”
The Pfister is currently in the midst of a $20 million renovation, including a restoration that refurbishes and restores its signature, historic features. Several of these are in the iconic lobby: the original marble along the grand staircase, the historic chandeliers and the cozy fireplace, complete with its original terracotta stone. “It will elevate our timehonored luxury in a way that is approachable and fresh for today’s guests,” Drusch says.
The hotel’s ballrooms, event spaces and guest rooms are also part of the refresh. The original gold-plated chandelier is returning to the Imperial Ballroom, as are the
crystal chandeliers in the Grand Ballroom. The newly renovated guest rooms present a “modern take on Victorian design,” according to Drusch. The updated bathrooms feature Kohler Co. fixtures, and the rooms also have wet bars with marble countertops and custom wood cabinets.
“The Pfister is much more than just a hotel; it is an experience,” says Drusch. “For over 130 years, The Pfister has been our city’s enduring mainstay, holding as much of Milwaukee’s history as its own. From our luxurious accommodations, amenities and exceptional service to our cultural and community engagement, The Pfister has a lasting legacy drawing in guests from around the globe as well as locals to experience its timeless excellence.” ◆
