YOUR WINTER GUIDE TO GREEN BAY
From ski slopes to cozy fireplaces, enjoy all the Bay has to offer this winter.
The Green Bay area has dozens of miles worth of trails perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Brown County Reforestation Camp, Neshota Park and Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve all have scenic winter trails. If you want to introduce some wildlife into your adventure, try Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, an animal refuge right in town with trails open daily. It also offers guided snowshoe tours.
Ice Skating Every winter, Titletown hosts an outdoor ice rink across the street from Lambeau Field. You can rent skates on-site. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent an ice bike, which is exactly what it sounds like (though it’s a lot easier to ride than you might think). You can also try the frozen pond at the beautiful Barkhausen for free skating, but you’ll need to bring your own skates.
Tubing and Sledding Fly down snowy hills at multiple spots around Green Bay. Right next to Titletown, 46-foot-tall Ariens Hill is open for sledding and tubing in the winter. For something more natural, try the 80-foot drop at Baird Creek Parkway and Triangle Sports Area. If you’re bringing little ones, Fireman’s Park, just off West Mason Street, has smaller hills designated for toddlers.
Winterfest on Broadway Green Bay’s annual Winterfest brings dozens of seasonal activities to the city’s Broadway District. There’s live music, food and drink vendors, carriage rides, hot cocoa, ice sculptures, s’more-making – and much more – stretching down the block. Save the date: Jan. 29.
Ice Fishing The Green Bay area abounds with good spots for ice fishing: the Fox River, Duck Creek, Lily Lake, the Ahnapee River and, of course, the Bay itself. If you’re an old pro, why not try a new spot? Snowmobiling The Brown County Parks have six zones where parkgoers can rev up their snowmobiles. Fat-Tire Biking The Reforestation Camp has 6 miles of trails specially groomed to accommodate the fat-tire bikes that can traverse snow with relative ease. You’ll need a trail pass to access them, which you can buy at the top of the trail.
Relaxing Fireplaces When you’re tired from a long day of winter adventure, few things are more welcome than a warm fireplace. Green Bay has several restaurants with prime spots. Try Copper State Brewing’s warm, brick-walled dining room, Plae Bistro’s chic bar, Hinterland Brewery’s hygge-heavy restaurant or the outdoor fireplace at Mackinaws Grill & Spirits. ◆
