Ten years ago, we started this comprehensive Charitable Events Guide to showcase the phenomenal work that local nonprofits and businesses are providing to the metro Milwaukee area. Over the years, we’ve been delighted with the responses we’ve received from you, our valuable readers, who have supported these enjoyable and beneficial events for a decade. This year, we’ve added a new exciting feature. Throughout the Guide, you’ll find full-page highlights of several important organizations that are making an everyday difference in our communities. Take a look at their mission statements, upcoming events and, most importantly, how you can make a difference by volunteering your time to assist others in need and by supporting the arts in our area. We’ve also added more options to our website, milwaukeemag.com. Now, you can not only continue to view monthly events throughout the year, but you can also submit your favorite charitable events to an online calendar. And you can upload photos from past events for all to see or check out photos from other organizations. Of course, the main feature is still the listings of upcoming balls, galas, luncheons, dinners, runs, rides, golf outings and more! PROFILE Mary Dowell Director of Global Community Relations, Johnson Controls Johnson Controls offers several programs that inspire employees to get involved in their communities. The Community Involvement Program (CIP), for instance, encourages employee volunteerism. CIP was started more than 30 years ago at the company’s headquarters and was expanded nationally in 2009. Last year, the program launched globally in communities where Johnson Controls has a presence, says Mary Dowell, Johnson Controls’ director of global community relations. Another employee-driven program that Johnson Controls offers is Executive Involvement and Steering (EIS), which seeks to strategically match leaders’ professional expertise and personal passions with area community and nonprofit organizations. Since its inception in 2008, EIS participation has increased by 321 percent, says Dowell. The EIS program is scheduled to launch globally in 2012. “There are over 1,700 employees participating in these two programs worldwide, with a total of 96,000 volunteer hours logged as of [2011],” she notes. “In fact, within the first 30 days of the global launch of CIP, employees around the world logged a record 12,000 hours.” Johnson Controls offers additional philanthropic support for the community through its Foundation, which provides grants to organizations in the areas of arts, education, health and social service, and the environment. The Foundation also finances the Education and Arts Matching Gift Program, where employee financial contributions are matched dollar for dollar, based on the program guidelines, says Dowell. 4 ⁄ Milwaukee Magazine ⁄ Charitable Events Guide 2012

The Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center is a nonprofit, social service agency founded upon Jewish ethics and values. It is committed to meeting the ever-changing needs of the entire Jewish community for strengthening Jewish identity and for enriching the quality of Jewish life. MISSION STATEMENT Milwaukee Ballet, now in its 42nd performing season, was founded in 1970 by local citizens with the desire of creating and sustaining a resident professional dance company in the city of Milwaukee. Since its inception, Milwaukee Ballet has brought superb presentations of the art form to more than 50,000 people a year. Artistic Director Michael Pink has thoughtfully fashioned an artistically and internationally diverse company of 23 elite athletes from six countries, as well as nine company dancers recruited from our own Nancy Einhorn Milwaukee Ballet II training program. These artists reside, work and create in this community and many make Milwaukee their home for years, contributing to and enhancing the artistic output of our city. When men or mothers with children need a hot meal, a warm, safe bed or a place to put their lives back together, they come to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. Since our doors opened in 1893, we have provided care and support to people who are truly in need. Each day, we provide food and shelter for up to 400 men, women and children who might have nowhere else to turn. In addition to meeting their immediate needs, we provide the training, support and guidance they need to rebuild their lives. VOLUNTEERING Every year, thousands of dedicated volunteers bring their talents and passions for helping others to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. Volunteers make an enormous impact on our ministry every day, and we couldn’t do what we do without their willingness to help. Every second Saturday of the month is Volunteer Saturday, a time when volunteers work on whatever the greatest need is at the time. Preregistration for Volunteer Saturdays is required.
