Charitable EVENTS2014
HOW IT BEGAN AS I SIT TO WRITE this year’s Charitable Events Guide letter, I can’t help but recall how it all began. It was the fall of 2002. I was sitting at the desk of Betty Quadracci and couldn’t overlook the stacks of invitations to galas, walks and tours from the many charitable organizations throughout the city. “How in the world can you attend all these events, much less keep them organized on your calendar?” I asked. Always one to see the bigger picture, she replied, “We need to publish a calendar, one accessible to the entire city to help navigate the many causes in our community. It’s so important to support these organizations.” Thus, the CHARITABLE EVENTS GUIDE was born.

It has been quite the journey producing this yearly guide, but it’s something Betty was particularly proud of. It is with sincere gratitude that I would like to dedicate this particular Charitable Events Guide to my mentor, confidante and inspiration, Betty Ewens Quadracci, who passed away December 9, 2013. She touched the lives of so many through her philanthropic contributions to the community. She was a true champion, triumphant in her many causes. I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to work for such an incredible woman.

I was charged with contacting each and every nonprofit organization in the city to solicit their help. Within weeks, it became apparent that we were on to something and were flooded with requests to publish upcoming charitable events. Mind you, this was in the day of snail mail, sometimes taking weeks to track down information. Many, many calls ensued, but we did it – we compiled what we believed would become one of the city’s most comprehensive charitable events calendars available annually, both in print and online (milwaukeemag.com/ceg).
