ELCOME TO THE 51st annual Lakefront Festival of Art. Not many festivals can boast passing the halfcentury mark, not to mention being regarded as one of the top 10 juried festivals in the country. You’ve come to the right place! Being a volunteer-based organization composed of 20 committees and more than 300 passionate individuals, we work hard year-round to bring you a three-day sensory event offering art, food and entertainment at the Milwaukee Art Museum – one of the city’s most renowned landmarks with breathtaking vistas on the shores of Lake Michigan. We are excited to showcase more than 176 artists who exhibit and sell their exemplary work in a plethora of art mediums and thank them for their commitment to this event. We also express gratitude to this year’s featured artist, Sandi Garris, who showcases her talent in a bright creation of bold colors and patterns hand-stitched from dyed fabrics. We hope you find time to experience all the attractions at this year’s festival. A few noteworthy items to check out are the new Lakeside Dining option (for those of you who prefer to be waited upon) and the champion sand sculptors, who you can watch carve this year’s masterpieces. And back by popular demand are later evening hours on Friday for you to enjoy more hours of art and entertainment, or to simply relax in the Milwaukee Magazine Wine Garden or Blue Moon Beer Garden. A special thank you goes out to our 2013 presenting sponsors, Quad/Graphics and Milwaukee Magazine, for their generous support and contribution to the Lakefront Festival of Art. They have truly been a cornerstone to our festival, and we appreciate their extensive involvement over the past several years. – Linda Lundeen and Jennifer Kresl 2013 Lakefront Festival of Art Co-Chairs
LFOA EXHIBITION POLICY The Milwaukee Art Museum and Friends of Art (FOA) do not receive any part of the proceeds from the sale of artwork at Lakefront Festival of Art. All art sales are strictly between the patron and the exhibitor, and because the Museum/FOA are not part of the transaction, they have no responsibility for the sale. Although FOA cannot resolve problems related to sales transactions, they are interested in your feedback and would like to know if you are dissatisfied with any aspect of your purchase. EATPACKING. IT DOESN’T EXACTLY LEAD to thoughts of art. Yet it was because of one art-loving English-born immigrant named Frederick Layton, who made his meatpacking fortune on West Water Street, and a separate group dedicated to promoting the fine arts and art education that the Milwaukee Art Museum as we know it exists today. “Mr. Layton and his contemporaries are the ones who started it all,” says Kristin Settle, the Museum’s public relations manager. “It’s a rich story of collaboration that led to an internationally recognized museum.” The Layton Art Gallery opened in 1888, the same 6
year that the Milwaukee Art Association took root. In 1911, the Milwaukee Art Association moved to a new location on Jefferson Street, doors apart from the Layton Art Gallery, and changed its name to the Milwaukee Art Institute after 1916. Together, the two neighboring institutions formed a powerful catalyst for donations of art collections, financial contributions, exhibitions and art education that would last 125 years – and counting. So what exactly transpired between the years Layton opened Milwaukee’s first permanent art gallery with CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 65 paintings and a $100,000

endowment and the large lakeside Museum of today that boasts a collection of nearly 30,000 works? Three notable events: the creation of a building “to honor the dead by serving the living,” a donation of $1 million and more than 600 works of modern American and European art, and the construction of an architectural icon that looks as if it’s about to take flight.
A Living MeMoriAL
As early as the end of World War I, people began discussing the idea of a combined veterans’ memorial and fine arts center “to honor the dead by serving the living,” although the notion didn’t take hold until the end of World War II. Three women’s clubs united to establish a war memorial in Milwaukee County, leading to the formation of the War Memorial Corporation. The famed architect Eliel Saarinen began designing the building that would serve as a living memorial to veterans and those who died in battle. The memorial would house the Layton Art Gallery and the Milwaukee Art Institute (together known as the Milwaukee Art Center), as well as a memorial space and veterans’ hall. After Saarinen died unexpectedly, his son Eero took over the project. The Milwaukee County War Memorial Center opened in September of 1957 and was dedicated on Veterans Day. Also that year, Friends of Art formed to provide volunteer support and to raise funds for acquisitions. Since then, the organization has raised more than $6 million to purchase hundreds of pieces of art and secure acquisitions. The group of more than 1,300 members also helps plan and run the prestigious Lakefront Festival of Art.
Peg BrAdLey’s seisMic donAtion
By the end of the 1960s, the Milwaukee Art Center had tripled its yearly attendance. And in 1969, Mrs. Harry Lynde (Peg) Bradley, wife of the co-founder of the Allen-Bradley Corporation, donated her collection of more than 600 modern American and European works of art to the Milwaukee Art Center. To house her generous gift, Bradley challenged the Milwaukee community to build an addition to the Museum, providing $1 million toward the effort. The challenge was met, and the Kahler building addition opened in 1975 with vastly enlarged galleries, more than 8

doubling the previous collection space. Just five years later, the center changed its name to the Milwaukee Art Museum and, in 1983, became fully accredited by the American Association of Museums.
The inspiraTional effecT of 72 sTeel fins
The Museum began planning for the next millennium while celebrating its 100th birthday in 1988. In 1994, Museum leadership chose Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava to design the Quadracci Pavilion, a sculptural postmodern addition that opened in 2001 to rave reviews – and with Calatrava saying, “I hope that … we have designed not a building, but a piece of the city." Average annual attendance catapulted from 150,000 visitors in the years before the Calatrava-designed addition to around 400,000 today. “People come from all over the world to see the building,” says Brady Roberts, the Museum’s chief curator. “And while they’re here, they discover we also have worldclass art and high-quality exhibitions. They leave Milwaukee seeing our city and Museum differently.” The expansion project included new exhibition galleries and an auditorium, as well as a store and café. Simultaneously, the Museum was propelled onto the international art scene.
WhaT’s nexT?
With eyes trained on the future, the Milwaukee Art Museum is looking forward to the next 125 years. “Milwaukee is constantly reinventing itself,” comments Roberts. “From the thriving industrial city in Layton’s day, to the cultural richness we had and still have, to the first Calatrava-designed building to be completed in the United States, Milwaukee is in a constant state of innovation.” For the coming years, that means executing a plan to reinvigorate its collection galleries, including the restoration of the Saarinen building and the 1975 Kahler addition. Settle says the repairs, renovations and reinstallation will improve navigation for visitors, add a changing exhibition gallery in the enclosed sculpture court and open the galleries to the lake with a new glass east atrium, which will be two stories tall. “The results will address structural problems, but also brighten and restore the galleries,” she notes. “We’re well on our way to positioning the Museum for the next 125 years.” If only Layton could see it now. ■ mam.org/lfoa LAKEFRONT FESTIVAL of ART 2013 9

POSTER ARTIST SHOWING HER TRUE COLORS
I
F QUILTING CONJURES UP images of women huddled over calico in a dimly lit cabin, forget that stereotype. Fiber artists like Sandi Garris have redefined the quilting tradition and what it means to create art made from thousands of tiny pieces of fabric, all painstakingly sewn together. After 20 years of art quilting in Pennsylvania, which she began as a way to help pay bills while caring for her small children, Garris has shifted her focus to fabric dyeing and creating intricate framed pieces. Dyeing her own fabric allows Garris to coax the exact hue and saturation she’s after, and her work is known for its intense color. “I’ll dye fabric for about a week, maybe a hundred yards. Then I fill all my cabinets,” says Garris. “I must have 50 shades of red.” The hues aren’t just in her cabinets. The colors are also locked in her head. While she sketches her ideas for pieces in black and white and fiddles with the images in her mind and on paper, she also imagines the exact colors she’ll choose. “I can spend weeks on the sketch and hours changing the shapes and colors in my head. When I can see all the colors working together in my mind and I’m happy with the sketch, then I start making the piece,” she explains. She tries to complete it within a week. Judges chose Garris’ Circleville as this year’s Lakefront Festival of Art poster. Garris says she dyed six shades of each color in the same fabric and assembled the circles using four different shades within each. “So I’ve got 24 shades of blue, yellow, red – all the different colors – and I combined them in different ways. There are hundreds of combinations in this piece,” she notes. The result is a dramatic pull from afar and detailed interest up close – and a whole new way to view fabric. – Laura Patten

Continuing a year-long celebration honoring American art and artists, the Milwaukee Art Museum presents 30 Americans, an exhibition of 31 contemporary African-American artists tackling issues around race, religion, gender, sexuality and history. Open during LFOA, this wide-ranging survey merges established artists with emerging artists and compares influences across decades, exploring ideas central to what it means to be an American. 30 Americans includes paintings, drawings, photography, videos, sculptures and mixed-media installations.
The exhibition showcases works by many of the most important AfricanAmerican artists working today, including Leonardo Drew, Nick Cave, iona rozeal brown, Mickalene Thomas and Kehinde Wiley, and focuses on issues of racial, sexual and historical identity in contemporary culture while exploring the powerful influence of artistic legacy and community across generations. Each artist expresses his or her individual opinion, but presented as a group, the collection sends a united message of community across the different generations of artists. In conjunction with the 30 Americans exhibition, the Museum will also host an installation of 30 AfricanAmerican Wisconsin artists in Schroeder Galleria. The installation, titled Wisconsin 30, will include works from artists statewide and will remain open during the run of 30 Americans.
