BETTY QUADRACCI 1938-2013 The 2014 Lakefront Festival of Art is dedicated to Betty Quadracci, champion of the arts and inspiration to many. Betty gave more than 26 years of service to the Milwaukee Art Museum as a volunteer and member of the Board of Trustees, and along with her husband, Harry, made the Quadracci Pavilion possible. As someone who believed that a person gets somewhere in life only when helping others get somewhere in life, Betty generously shared her insight, knowledge, wisdom and passion.

WELCOME

W

elcome to the 2014 Lakefront Festival of Art, presented by Quad/Graphics and Milwaukee Magazine. For more than 50 years the passion, dedication and hard work of our committees and hundreds of volunteers have created an event that is recognized as one of the premier art festivals in the country. This year will continue to build on that legacy with hopes of it being the best yet! From more than 1,200 applications, 176 talented artists from around the country have been jury selected, including this year’s poster artists, Michael Schunke and Josie Gluck. In addition to the artists, there will once again be the children’s art and activity area, access to all of the Milwaukee Art Museum’s exhibitions, including the featured exhibition, Kandinsky: A Retrospective, and delicious food and beverage choices. Making its return on Friday night is Lakefront Late Night including great local bands selected by Radio Milwaukee on our main stage. This year we are honored to dedicate Lakefront Festival of Art to the late Betty Quadracci. Betty’s support of the Lakefront Festival of Art was instrumental in growing the event into what it is today. From volunteering her time to providing financial support, she made an immense impact. Betty, you will be missed and remembered, especially here at the Lakefront Festival of Art. Please join us for a great weekend on a great lake,

For that, she will be missed. And for that, she will be remembered.

over the past several years, the layout has become a little disjointed. How will the renovation fix that?

A MUSEUM-SIZED MAKEOVER When the art is at risk, there is no time to waste. BY LAURA PATTEN

H

omeowners know that periodic structural improvement projects come with the territory. Now imagine that your home is 341,000 square feet, essentially consisting of three buildings built in 1957, 1975 and 2001, spanning four floors (with some areas of those additions leaking since day one), featuring 30,000 works of art and worldclass collections. “When the rolls of duct tape needed to hold something together cost more than the repair itself, you know it’s time to fix things,” deadpans Milwaukee Art Museum Director Dan Keegan. So the Museum has kicked off a $25 million capital campaign to make the necessary repairs. Milwaukee County, which owns the 1957 War Memorial Center and the 1975 Kahler addition, contributed $10 million, with the Museum responsible for raising the remaining $15 million. Construction begins this fall and will last about a year. Milwaukee Magazine spoke with Keegan to learn more about the current state of the structures and what people can expect when the renovations are complete. Describe the condition of the buildings for us.

The two older buildings, the War Memorial Center and the Kahler addition, are deteriorating. We have drip pans in ceilings and absorbent pads on some floors, the HVAC [heating/ventilation/air conditioning] system is beyond its lifespan, and we’ve had to close two galleries in the European

collection because of leaking and buckling floors. There’s a high risk of damage to the art collections in our galleries and the risk is too high to go another year without doing something.

Why not act sooner?

We held off on making repairs until we finalized all the agreements with the county and had assurances that the Museum would have responsibility for the spaces it occupies, which makes sense, given that the Museum has the highest risk because of the value of the collection. To be clear, there was no bad intent here by the county; it was just a matter of priorities and pressures on dollars and precious few to go around. But we all agree that we’re at a tipping point now and that the condition of the buildings constitutes a crisis. We’re moving together full steam ahead to rectify the problems.

What stays open during the renovation? Everything in the Quadracci Pavilion, which is the area created by Santiago Calatrava, stays open. That includes the large exhibition space and Windhover Hall—the open area that looks like the prow of a ship—the east and west gallerias, Café Calatrava and the Museum Store. Only the permanent collection galleries will be off view during construction. We’ll continue to present exhibitions in the Quadracci Pavilion, and the ones coming up will be stellar.

Let’s talk about the layout of the collections. Because of the Museum’s growth

It will be easier to find your way around the Museum because we’re going to present our collections in a whole new way. For example, the American art collection, once across three floors, will be combined into its own wing on the second level. The lower level will be brand new, with more than 12,000 square feet dedicated to photography and new media. We’re one of the few museums in the United States to devote this kind of space to these art forms—and it’s one way that the Museum remains relevant in a digital age.

Describe the plan to enclose the Kahler sculpture court.

This will be a marvelous improvement. Eighty percent of the Museum’s leaks have been attributed to the sculpture court. It has been closed off to the public and has never worked the way it was supposed to when it was finished in 1975. It was designed as a beautiful outdoor element, but our weather is unforgiving six months out of the year. We’re going to put a roof on it and add 5,000 square feet in gallery space.

You’ll be extending the Veterans Memorial and establishing access to the lakefront and east addition. Tell us more about that. This is about the rooftop, which we’re turning into a green memorial garden. We’ll add two major pathways and sets of stairs so you can walk across the rooftop and down to the lake. Plus you can enter the Museum from the east and not have to walk around to the main entrance on the west side. These enhancements will mark the first time that the Veterans Memorial and the Museum will have a complete connection; this creates a unified experience around the memorial, the Museum and the lake.

What’s the biggest change that people will notice?

The east addition, which will feature a twofloor design, the new lakeside entrance and a lobby. The addition is 17,000 square feet, so there’s significantly more space to exhibit art here. The contemporary art collection will be expanded into this space and we’ll dedicate 5,000 square feet to exhibitions that change. With this gallery changing periodically, we will never be in the dark in terms of feature exhibitions.

The Museum has enjoyed healthy support over the years, not only from benefactors but also volunteers. Talk about the role of Friends of Art volunteers and Lakefront Festival of Art in this capital campaign. The volunteers are powerful and critical to our success, and it’s been that way for the 53 years that the Lakefront Festival of Art has existed. This annual fundraiser supports the Museum’s collections of art and its related programs, including exhibitions. If you were to list the works of art acquired through funds raised by Friends of Art, it would include some of our most important pieces, such as “Ruin” by Nam June Paik and “Madonna and Child” by Nardo di Cione, and some of our most popular, such as “Janitor” by Duane Hanson.

These structural improvements that we’re making to the buildings are all about protecting the art—now and for future generations. Year after year, decade after decade, these volunteers are generating funds for the art and programs about the art. When you think about it, that’s pretty magical. WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE MUSEUM’S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN? So far, citizens and foundations have pledged $13 million of the $15 million the Museum hopes to raise to renovate the Kahler addition and Veterans Memorial. To make a donation, visit mam.org/campaign, email mary.albrecht@mam.org or call 414-224-3245.

methyst. Smoky topaz. Cerulean blue. The color names are nearly as beautiful as the hand-blown glass pitchers created by Michael Schunke and Josie Gluck in their Vetro Vero studio in West Grove, Pa. Flattened to increase color saturation, the pitchers brilliantly capture light. The narrowed depth allows for playful overlapping displays on bookshelves and windowsills. People often mix and match the pitchers and overlap the colors, says Gluck. “It’s fun to sell them that way because people get really engaged; we hear about the colors in their homes. So then it becomes a collaborative thing,” she says. The artists’ own collaboration began in 2008 when Gluck became Schunke’s teaching assistant for his advanced glassblowing class. In addition to their signature pitchers, these talented artists also design and create vases, vessels, bottles, sculpture, goblets and drinkware, candleholders, and the work they’re probably the most proud of—their “squiggle” bowls, one-of-a-kind pieces made with layers of blown and manipulated glass. “They are unquestionably unique,” offers Gluck. Each bowl represents days of work, which creates patterns that neither Gluck nor Schunke have seen anywhere else. “It took us a long time to get them to look the way we wanted them to. We’re on our fourth year and just recently became very happy with them,” adds Schunke. (View the bowls, and a slide show of their glassblowing process, at vetrovero.com.) Between them, Schunke and Gluck have 40 years of experience, and have created tens of thousands of works. But only those that meet their high standards make it out of the studio and into people’s homes. “I shoot the others with a pellet gun,” Schunke quips. Visit Gluck and Schunke, and their works of art, at Booth 158 inside the museum at this year’s Lakefront Festival of Art. mam.org/lfoa LAKEFRONT FESTIVAL of ART 2014 21
