POSTER ARTIST How Anthony Hansen finds life in castaway objects.
F
or many, the word tapestry might conjure thoughts of heavy cloth, warps and wefts. But to metal artist Anthony Hansen, “tapestry” describes perfectly his sheet-metal creations, not so much because of the way they look, but because of what they represent. Hansen rivets, wires and welds found and reclaimed material –much of it automotive sheet metal – and keeps every scratch, ding and rust spot. When he’s finished, castaway objects are transformed into abstract grid-style murals and lovely, intricate hearts. To gather his materials – mostly car hoods, doors and fenders – Anthony Hansen is Hansen combs through a metal artist whose work is shown nationlocal wrecking yards ally at fine arts festivals near his hometown and galleries. Included in this piece is a remalong the central cost nant of a Wisconsin license plate. of California. He loves the story that each piece tells. “The materials have been on their own journey. With every piece of metal, you can think, ‘Someone washed that and waxed it. Someone drove that car with kids piled in the back.’” The heart-shaped pieces are a perennial favorite among art buyers, says Hansen. “There’s something masculine about the material yet the shape is organic, curvy and feminine. They’re fun to design and create, but I also believe in the positivity of what the shape implies – that, like it or not, we need to do a better job of loving each other,” he explains. “The heart is a way forward as a community, nation and the world.”
LFOA EXHIBITION POLICY The Milwaukee Art Museum and Friends of Art (FOA) do not receive any part of the proceeds from the sale of artwork at Lakefront Festival of Art. All art sales are strictly between the patron and the exhibitor, and because the Museum/FOA are not part of the transaction, they have no responsibility for the sale. Although FOA cannot resolve problems related to sales transactions, they are interested in your feedback and would like to know if you are dissatisfied with any aspect of your purchase.

THE LAKE EFFECT How a festival creates ripples beyond the event’s grounds.
By LAURA PATTEN
I
n this city of festivals, there’s exactly one that exists solely to make money – only to give it all away. At age 53, Lakefront Festival of Art (LFOA) is one of the oldest outdoor festivals in Milwaukee (Summerfest is 47), and is highly admired nationwide among art festival attendees – and organizers. That’s partly because all the proceeds benefit the Milwaukee Art Museum and not the festival itself. “Most art festivals comparable in size are their own nonprofits and they reinvest in themselves. That’s not entirely the case with LFOA,” explains Krista Renfrew, Director of Special Events at the Milwaukee Art Museum. “Everything the Friends of Art volunteers do, and all the money raised, benefits the Milwaukee Art Museum Exhibition and Acquisitions fund.” The volunteers have a lot to show for their efforts. They’ve raised enough over the years for Number of LFOA attendees in 2014:
Number of attendees in 1962, LFOA’s inaugural year:
22,000

the museum to purchase more than 250 pieces of art, some worth millions today. The festival has also contributed over a million endowment dollars to the Museum and brought in more than $7 million overall. But the Museum isn’t the only benefactor of the festival’s success. Milwaukee and its surrounding area – and all the people who live there – win too. “In economic terms, a thriving arts community means more visitors staying in our hotels, eating at our restaurants, taking in other activities and so on,” says Renfrew. “A vibrant arts environment also brings people together. Strangers share experiences and thoughts and connect with one another in new ways. A thriving arts community, and festivals like LFOA, create a ripple effect and we all enjoy the benefits,” she states. So just how do we quantify the LFOA effect, in addition to the dollars it raises? Like this:
