Casual Bridezilla you are not. So it’s no wonder you want your low-key style woven into every detail of your wedding day as well.

THE DRESS:

Whether opting for a long or short dress, “think airy fabrics like chiffon with simple touches – nothing too ornate,” says wedding planner Katie Carlson of Golden Chic Events & Consulting (goldenchicevents. com).

THE STATIONERY: This classic floral design from Broadway Paper fits your easygoing style (broadwaypaper.com).

THE VENUE: Unpretentious

spaces with plenty of room for personal touches are high on the casual bride’s list. Carlson suggests a tented backyard event or lakefront location like South Shore Park Pavilion. For the nature-inspired bride, look to the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, located in Brookfield’s Mitchell Park (wilson-center.com).

THE LOOK:

THE MENU: Focus on food that exudes fun and togetherness. Consider an upscale picnic, clam bake, family-style service or catered comfort food. For Southern-inspired favorites, check out Maxie’s (maxies.com).

6

“You want to look like you, just a polished, better you,” says Elizabeth WalshZimmermann, director of WELL Spa + Salon at The Pfister Hotel. Hair can be worn up or down, but keep it loose and soft. Neutral or soft blush palettes keep brides looking fresh and doe eyed, not overdone (pfisterwellspa. com).

THE RING: “These brides tend to look at simple, elegant pieces,” says Amy Shallow, fifth-generation designer at A Trio Jewelry Design. “The ring I associate with the casual bride is a low-profile setting we call the “007 Ring” (atriojewelry.com).

THE CAKE: One delicate flower provides that no-frills touch of class to your casual wedding cake.

THE MENU: A cocktail hour with hors

THE DRESS: Lace

and pearls were big in 2013, and they will likely continue to trend in 2014, says Beverly Berson, owner of Gigi of Mequon. Equally popular are soft fabrics (no satin) and fit-and-flare style gowns. Forgoing the traditional veil for a vintage-inspired hair comb, feather or bird cage pays homage to ’20s-inspired style (gigiofmequon.com).

d’oeuvres adds extra class. Consider offering a signature drink or Prohibition-era cocktails like mint juleps and sidecars.

Sophisticated Embracing a fusion of traditional and modern styles, you know how to keep things classy while still having fun.

Woman's Club of Wisconsin

Ivory beaded trumpet gown by Lazaro at Gigi of Mequon

THE CAKE:

A bright accent color adds a modern twist to a traditional five-tier cake.

Hotel and Woman's Club of Wisconsin are must-view venues on your wedding planning to-do list. From simple sophistication to lavish splendor, your rehearsal dinner or reception will make a statement when held in these surroundings (thedelafieldhotel. com; wc-wi.org).

THE LOOK:

THE STATIONERY: The graceful and timeless designs at Paperwhites complement the bride who seeks that certain level of sophistication (paperwhitesinvitations.com).

8

Simple, classic and finished best describe the sophisticated bride’s hair and makeup. For a hint of glamour, say “eye do” to professionally applied lash extensions like LiquiFan. Invented by Nova Beschta, owner of Lash Boutique in Brookfield, LiquiFan extensions are the only instantly cured eyelash extensions available on the market (lashboutiques.com).

THE RING:

Sophisticated brides regard vintage-inspired and antique pieces as the cat’s meow. “Veer toward an alternative-cut center stone, like an emerald-cut diamond, instead of the classic round cut,” says A Trio’s Amy Shallow (atriojewelry.com).

THE STATIONERY: Choose stationery that will make a bold statement, like this design from Monograham Paper (monograhampaper.com).

MODERN You’re the bride who likes to do her own thing. Individuality is your name – and breaking from tradition is your game.

THE CAKE:

For a modern twist, decorate your cake using fresh flowers instead of the sugar variety.

THE MENU: Presentation is as important as taste, making interactive food stations a popular choice. “The emphasis should be on innovative ways of displaying the food,” says Katie Carlson, wedding planner at Golden Chic Events & Consulting (goldenchicevents.com).

10

THE LOOK: Smoky eye

Strapless satin gown with fitted tunic bodice and beaded sash by Mikaella at Miss Ruby Bridal Boutique

THE RING: For the modern bride, traditional engagement rings are oh so...ordinary. Whether it's creating an asymmetrical look or trading white diamonds for colored, Janet La Paz and her experienced team at Genesis Jewelry can design a ring to fit your style (genesisjewels.com).

makeup in a hue that complements your eyes – gray, brown, green or purple – gets the green light here. But to give those peepers a really dramatic pop, Lash Boutique offers customized fill-ins for all lash extension sets. You might even consider adding on some glitzy eyelash gems or glitter lashes. Finish the look with a light, gloss-kissed lip and polished – but not too sleek – hairstyle (lashboutiques.com).

Jouer eye shadow in Pistachio at Blush

Milwaukee Art Museum photo by Craig John Photography

THE VENUE: You’re not afraid of the spotlight, so consider saying “I do” in the Humphrey Scottish Rite Masonic Center’s auditorium. The “stage” has 52 different backdrops to set the scene for your vows, while plush red velvet seats accommodate up to 356 guests (wsrf.org). With venues like the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee has no shortage of sleek, contemporary architecture to make the modern bride swoon (mam.org).

THE DRESS: When fashion trumps function, look to dresses made from taffeta and satin fabrics. They offer a luxurious, dramatic look while still giving the dress plenty of structure and sheen, says Erin Thull of Miss Ruby Bridal Boutique. To stand out from the crowd, some modern brides may also consider trading traditional white for a blush or champagne-colored gown. “We’re seeing designers offer more gowns in these untraditional colors," Thull notes (missrubyboutique.com).

Fairy-Tale

Like the fairy tales you read as a child, you’re about to live happily ever after with your Prince Charming. You want your day to radiate with romance and tradition.

Jouer lipstick in Kate at Blush

THE MENU: Say "I do" to a seated dinner. If you don’t mind crossing over into the sophisticated style, order the whiteglove service.

Smashbox Fushion Soft Lights bronzer in Intermix at Blush and Sephora

THE LOOK:

Creamy peaches, pinks and blush hues dominate. “This look has a flair of glamour. So the eyes will be done a little more, and you’re probably going to wear a lipstick with a gloss over it,” says Elizabeth Walsh-Zimmermann of WELL Spa + Salon at The Pfister (pfisterwellspa.com).

THE CAKE:

Tulle gown with lace and bead embellishments by Enzoani at Amelishan

Nothing says princess better than a pink cake topped with fresh roses.

THE STATIONERY:

Like true royalty, have your invitations rolled up and tied with ribbon.

THE VENUE: If you dream of dancing the night away in

an elegant ballroom, look to venues with large spaces like The Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee Marriott Downtown or The Grain Exchange (marcusweddings.com; marriott. com/mkedn; bartolottacatering.com/grain). If it’s a picturesque garden, gazebo or patio setting you desire, consider Country Springs Hotel or Seven Seas in Waukesha (countryspringshotel.com; sevenseaswi.com).

THE DRESS: Opt for soft, flowy fabrics instead of heavy satin, but feel free to play up the details through lace, beading or ruching. As for the veil, the longer the better, says wedding planner Katie Carlson (goldenchicevents. com). Similarly, Erin Thull of Miss Ruby Bridal Boutique has seen an uptick in longsleeved gowns. “Ever since the Duchess of Cambridge debuted in her lace-sleeved gown, we’re seeing plenty of fairy-tale brides follow in her footsteps,” she says (missrubyboutique.com).

12

The Grain Exchange

THE RING: Timeless and traditional

doesn’t have to mean boring. “Over 95 percent of our business is custom jewelry,” says Genesis Jewelry's Janet La Paz, and that includes designing pieces for clients who lean toward traditional settings and stones. “Sometimes it’s just adding a little something, like a twist to the popular halo look,” she says (genesisjewels.com).

➻ It’s no longer considered bad luck

for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. In fact, arranging a “first look” and taking photos of the couple before the ceremony means there is more time to enjoy the party with family and friends. ➻ Couples don’t need to feel pressured to invite everyone they know to their big day. Keep the guest list (and costs) down by creating a smaller, more intimate guest list that includes only those closest to the couple.

Bridal Beauty:

Airbrush Makeup Creates Flawless, Photo-Ready Skin

16

After preparing the skin, the makeup artist applies the bride’s eye makeup first. (Eye shadow can be done with airbrush, but most brides choose to use a traditional makeup, says Heine.) After whisking away any loose makeup and adding a few dabs of concealer, the airbrushed foundation is sprayed onto the skin. A translucent powder sets the look, blush adds a flush of color (airbrushed blush or bronzer is also an option) and it’s finished with lip color. Start to finish, the process takes about 45 minutes, but the results last all day and require just one, maybe two, powder touch-ups. An added bonus: airbrushed makeup can cover other areas of the body, just in case you want to keep Grandma from noticing that tattoo.

AIRBRUSH MAKEUP PREP TIPS Skiin Anti-aging Lounge Chris Zajdel, Co-owner www.lovemyskiin.com

➻ Establish a great relationship with an experienced aesthetician.

➻ Keep a daily skin care regime consist-

ing of high-performance brands that exfoliate and hydrate your skin. ➻ At least five days before the wedding, see an aesthetician to have surface skin cells removed using microdermabrasion.

FOR TODAY'S BRIDE, finding a professional makeup artist is as essential as finding the right dress. Every bride wants to put her best face forward on her big day, and airbrush makeup application is helping brides do just that. “Airbrush makeup is designed for high-definition photography. It’s pixelated, so it looks crisp in pictures and flawless in person,” says Alli Heine, makeup artist at Neroli Salon & Spa (nerolispa.com). It’s also extremely customizable, offering brides the right amount of coverage and glow to suit their personal style. “It feels so lightweight because it sits on top of the skin,” Heine adds. “Most brides say they don’t even realize they’re wearing makeup.”

For the Guests:

Creating the Perfect Wedding Weekend 9

AFTER MONTHS OF PLANNING, your guests have arrived! Roll out the welcome wagon in true Cream City fashion with a mix of must-try Milwaukee attractions, sights and flavors. Milwaukee River Cruise Line’s Historic Milwaukee Boat Tour gives guests a crash course in the city’s rich industrial history, strong German heritage, famous faces and exciting future. At the weekend’s close, book The Harbor Lady for a three-course goodbye brunch against the backdrop of the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan (edelweissboats.com). Adding to Mil-town’s electricity is its vibrant arts and music scene. Whether guests enjoy spending an afternoon at the Milwaukee Art Museum or War Memorial Center, an evening at the symphony or strolling through local artist galleries, there is something for every taste (mam.org; warmemorialcenter.org). No stop in Milwaukee is complete without a local brewery tour. Great Lakes Distillery, Wisconsin’s original small-batch distillery, offers a one-hour tour that includes a flight of 18

six award-winning spirits ($7, greatlakesdistillery.com). From its humbled beginnings to its rise as an iconic Milwaukee landmark, Lakefront Brewery’s tour offers four 6-ounce pours and a souvenir pint glass to commemorate the trip ($7, lakefrontbrewery.com). Or stop at Potawatomi Bingo Casino. Whether you’re warming up or winding down the night, test your luck at table games, slots, bingo or poker – or grab dinner at one of six restaurants (paysbig.com). Need more sustenance than liquid bread? Bartolotta Restaurants offer a location and menu for every affair. For the bride who wants to tell a story, Pritzlaff is a popular choice. But also consider a stop at Turner Hall. Its historical roots and industrialchic ambience offer plenty of opportunity to capture the juxtaposition of old meets modern.

While wedding parties stroll the streets of the Historic Third Ward and Fifth Ward nearly every weekend, the area’s abundance of old warehouses, rusted train bridges, green spaces, textures and styles offer a gold mine of photo ops. Look to doorways, storefronts and alleyways for unique backdrops.
