#WeRepMilwaukee
Milwaukee Rep is the largest performing arts organization in Wisconsin, typically welcoming 300,000 people at 700 performances of 14 productions a season at the Associated Bank Theater Center featuring three unique performance venues – the Quadracci Powerhouse (720 seats), Stiemke Studio (205 seats) and Stackner Cabaret (186 seats). For over six decades, Milwaukee Rep has been a centerpiece of Milwaukee’s vibrant arts and cultural scene with productions ranging from Broadway musicals to Shakespeare to American Classics and New Works that are entertaining, inclusive and impactful.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Mark Clements and Executive Director Chad Bauman, Milwaukee Rep creates world-class theater experiences for our audiences and uses education and civic engagement to bring diverse people together for healthy and respectful dialogue around important issues facing us today.
Just like Milwaukee, we’re not what people usually expect. We’re more diverse. More impactful. More modern. From the stage to the streets, the things we do, we do to bring out the best in our region. Our work is representative of Milwaukee’s rich diversity as we aim to be a theater that is welcoming and inspirational to all.

After a scandalous, amorous encounter on a campus lawn, two college poetry professors are forced into public apologies. Their lectures, cleverly written in rhyming verse, become a witty exploration of love, sex, death and poetry.
Artistic Director Mark Clements
Here at Milwaukee Rep, we pride ourselves on the wide range of programming we offer audiences. From bold new works to Broadway-level musicals to contemporary classics to holiday favorites, our dynamic three (or four, if you include the Pabst) theater spaces allow us to program work that appeals to a wide cross-section of the city–and beyond. But one piece we felt was missing on our stages–and, to an extent, the Milwaukee stages as a whole–was Shakespeare.
What came from this discovery was the Classics Initiative, a plan funded generously by the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, through which every year for a five-year period we would produce a Shakespeare play (or another classic piece). We kicked off our first year in 2021/22 with the Bard on the Beach As You Like It featuring Beatles music and 60s vibes. For our second year, we wanted to build on the excitement around As You Like It and showcase another engaging, meaningful, and joyfully fun show in our repertoire.
As we brainstormed ideas for our next classic play, Laura Braza, Milwaukee Rep’s Associate Artistic Director and frequent director on our stages, pitched an idea of Much Ado About Nothing set in the early 90s just after the First Gulf War. Featuring original grunge-inspired music. Much Ado felt particularly of the current zeitgeist in its exploration of the impact of stereotypical gender roles, toxic masculinity and misogyny, and returning from war as realities we are not only seeing play out on the world stage, but that we, as a country, are still actively wrestling with. As Shakespeare does so expertly in his comedies, this truth about our world is infused so naturally into, and revealed through the characters wooing each other, exchanging witty banter, and getting up to countless shenanigans.
Shakespeare is arguably the greatest playwright of all time. Certainly, the impact of his plays has reached across time, generations, cultures, and politics. And in the hands of great artists, the stories and themes continue to get reinterpreted for new audiences, speaking to the present moment in exciting and impactful ways. I can easily say we have truly great artists on this production. You will recognize many familiar faces of folks who have “tread the boards” across Wisconsin alongside talented newcomers, all of whom gather to make merry mischief and music on the Powerhouse stage.
To our Shakespeare buffs in the audience and our Shakespeare first-timers–we welcome you all! We hope that the comedy, romance, and music of this production capture all the drama and playfulness Shakespeare originally intended, with the added throwback of the delightful 90s setting showcasing how classical stories continue to teach us much about the moments we’re living in.
Cheers,
Visit Saint Kate for a pre-show dinner at ARIA, then come back for drinks and a stroll through our art galleries.
Or, just stay the night. Either way, the fun doesn't have to end after curtain close.
American Century Cycle
This riveting play, Milwaukee Rep’s eighth production in August Wilson’s iconic 10-play American Century Cycle, explores faith, artistry, humor, oppression and love set to the fiery rhythms and intense lyricism of American blues music.
