Guest Artists

“ When I wished to sing of love, it turned to sorrow. And when I wished to sing of sorrow, it was transformed for me into love.” —FRANZ SCHUBERT

Experience the power of classical music to stir your senses. The conductor raises the baton. You rise ever so slightly in your seat. Something is about to happen that only occurs in the live, expectant moment of a Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concert. You are about to be stirred. The power of music to move you is about to be unleashed by a symphonic force whose sole passion is inspiring yours. Will a familiar concerto awaken a fond memory? A solo melt your heart? An overture set your pulse marching? A new work fill you with wonder? There is no telling what feelings the music will evoke. That is the delight and the dare of a live Milwaukee Symphony performance. More than a concert, it is an invitation to connect—with the musicians, each other in the hall, and the songs deep within yourself. The 2017.18 season explores the full range of orchestral emotion. Two of Beethoven’s greatest symphonies bookend the repertoire—the propulsive Seventh to start, and the epic Ninth to conclude. The Symphony will also celebrate the Bernstein Centennial all season long, including a live performance of West Side Story to accompany the Oscar-winning motion picture. A stellar array of guest conductors and solo artists will punctuate the season: dynamic, rising conductors like Karina Canellakis, the acclaimed conductor Michael Francis, the return of Andreas Delfs, and Conductor Laureate Edo de Waart. Violinists Jennifer Koh, Augustin Hadelich, and Karen Gomyo, and pianists Joyce Yang and Louis Schwizgebel are sure to captivate. The Milwaukee Symphony’s own virtuosos, and the MSO Chorus, will spotlight the artistic excellence in our midst. The Classics of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra promise to transport you on a thrilling journey of musical emotion. Experience it in person. Reserve your seats now, and prepare to be stirred. mso.org | 3

P HOTOS BY J ON ATHAN KIRN

John Luther Adams’s Become Ocean has won the Pulitzer Prize and mesmerized audiences. “Like the sea at dawn, it presents a gorgeous surface, yet its heaving motion conveys overwhelming force… tonally centered, almost to the point of lushness,” wrote Alex Ross in The New Yorker. “Its three huge crescendos suggest a tidal surge washing over all barriers. It may be the loveliest apocalypse in musical history…Whether orchestras will be playing it a century hence is impossible to say, but I went away reeling.”
