CAMBRIDGE IN 1775: A WALKING TOUR Charles Bahne | Boston Historian Cambridge was the focus of both military and political activity at the dawn of the American Revolution. Redcoats marched through the town on their way to Lexington and Concord; two months later, generals met in Harvard Square to plan for the Battle of Bunker Hill. Here George Washington formed the Continental Army, won his first victory, and dealt with his first traitor. This tour will view surviving sites of the Revolutionary War in Harvard Square, Harvard Yard, and Brattle Street, and will discuss events that occurred elsewhere in Cambridge between 1774 and 1778. Meeting point: Courtyard of 42 Brattle Street.
This talk provides both historical context and modern reflections on one of the most famous pilgrimages in the world: the Camino de Santiago. Covering the 500 mile route known as the Camino Frances from the Pyrenees Mountains to Galicia, Spain, the Camino (or The Way) is an enchanting experience that has captured the attention of authors, artists, Hollywood producers, and everyday people for centuries. BRATTLE STREET: TORY ROW Charles Bahne | Boston Historian
Whether we are enjoying nature at home, in our national parks or elsewhere in another country, we have an ecological impact. Can ethical wildlife watching and enthusiasm for nature thrive hand in hand in a time where selfies and thrill quests prevail? Absolutely yes, with a little consideration and thought, and with the bonus of increasing our sense of wonder!
For more than two centuries, Brattle Street has been one of the finest residential streets in America. In 1775, George Washington and his army made their headquarters in the abandoned mansions of seven wealthy loyalists—all of which still stand today. In the centuries since, Brattle Street residents have invented baking powder, Fig Newtons, Polaroid cameras, and Sadie Hawkins Day. On this walking tour, we will see these sites and the homes of the poets Longfellow and Lowell. Meeting point: Courtyard of 42 Brattle Street.

Charles Bahne | Boston Historian
From the 1600s to the mid-1900s, women’s contributions to Boston were often under-recognized. Who were these Bostonians and what achievements have been overlooked? Overall, this tour acknowledges the steps these women took in making Boston and America what they are today. THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES (500-1000 AD/CE) Anatole Sykley | Historian and Member of the WWI Historical Society Were the Early Middle Ages from 500 AD a “dark” era lacking social and intellectual progress? This era has many surprises. As pieces of the old Roman Empire in the west struggled for stability, monarchs such as Charlemagne the Great arose. In the east Byzantine rulers held on and even expanded. Bookish monks in the west and curious Islamic scholars in the east preserved classical learning, making some progress despite the ravages of Viking and Bulgar raiders, plagues and superstitions. LITERATURE WHAT IS OTHELLO? Regine Vital | Literature Instructor What is Othello about? That seems a simple question, but in a 2016 essay for Shakespeare Quarterly, Ian Smith recounts an episode of a colleague’s insistence that the play wasn’t about race. Considering the pointed, vehement personal attacks hurled at him in the play, Othello’s character appears to exist in a state of blackness. But if the play isn’t, at least in part, about race, why put a black body at the its center? By exploring the idea of embodied blackness, perhaps we’ll find an answer. C O U R S E C O D E : B L AC

Moroccan Pots by Brett Gamache, Oil on Linen, 2018
What should students know about the Studio School at CCAE? The Studio School is made up of three dedicated instructors (Jeremy Durling, Laraine Armenti and myself); our program offers students a wide variety of art courses focusing on observational painting and drawing. It provides students a rare opportunity to experience 3 to 4 hour studio classes in a supportive, focused setting with constructive feedback from a working artist.
What are you currently working on? When the weather cooperates, I often paint on-sight at the ocean in Gloucester, when the weather is poor, I’m usually in the studio working on still lifes paintings. Currently
What are some key concepts or ideas that you want your students to take away from your classes?
