THEN

Brit stars Victoria and David land in Hollywood to mixed reviews in 2007 (along with some new showbiz pals...)

Victoria: ‘I Can’t Believe I’ve Done It’ The fash pack love her, the A-list love her and finally Victoria feels accepted

NOW

UK star Queen Vic has officially won over Hollywood – finally!

NEWS

S

tanding tall at her VB x Target launch party earlier this month, Victoria Beckham oozed success. As she casually chatted to her high-profile celebrity guests, including Jessica Alba, Naomie Harris and Zoe Saldana (to name but a few) the afternoon tea party definitely felt like VB’s big moment. At the party, set in the grounds of a Bel Air mansion in Los Angeles, VB looked phenomenal. And not only were her A-list guests poring over her new (and now sold out) collection, crafting handmade flower crowns and sipping Pimm’s, she was also joined by five-year-old Harper and 12-year-old Cruz – who were both dressed in her designs. ‘It feels like a very British celebration,’ cooed VB. It’s a proud moment for Victoria, who celebrates her 43rd birthday on 17 April. The launch event has not only rubbished the (unsubstantiated) claims that her business is floundering in debt, it’s also redeemed Brand Beckham following her husband David’s very public knighthood scandal earlier this year. ‘Victoria’s grafted to prove all the doubters wrong,’ says a close friend. ‘Things are coming together after a tough start to the year, and being able to throw a party in Hollywood to launch her new collection was heavenly. Victoria stepped up and made sure people were only saying good things about Brand Beckham again. She’s finally got what she wanted.’ The success comes at the perfect time for the Beckhams, especially since Victoria and David have been talking at length about another big US move as David desperately tries to finalise his Miami football deal.

Victoria’s Carpool Karaoke was a hoot

Naomie Harris poses with VB. Jessica Alba (above) also came out for the party. Meanwhile, Cruz (right) was photobombed by his mother

Zoe Saldana and Kate Mara don flower headdresses

It’s something that’s caused friction but, with everything going so well over there, it could be on the cards. It’s a far cry from when the star first moved to LA in 2007. ‘In England, David and I are big fish in a small pond,’ she said at the time. ‘But in LA, we’re tiny, tiny, tiny fish in a big pond.’ Following their first move, Victoria (unsurprisingly) received a lukewarm reception in the States. ‘If you want bad driving, Lindsay Lohan is worse. If you want rich, Paris Hilton is richer, and if you want thin women, fire a bullet into Los Angeles and you’ll hit 100 of them. Why do we need this Victoria Beckham?’ said a Los Angeles Times commentator at the time. Ten years on and the very same publication is falling at her feet, naming her a successful designer, championing the collection and even attending the Bel Air garden party to chat to VB about her range. Despite David recently saying he wished Victoria would dress like ‘the old days’, VB circa 2007 is almost unrecognisable from the woman we know now. Yes, the choppy peroxide haircut has gone – replaced with a sophisticated brown lob – but it’s not just her appearance. Gone is the brash VB from her flop reality show Victoria Beckham: Coming To America, which included the opening line: ‘I don’t want to be seen smiling, having fun or eating.’

S h e ’s always said she wants to be at the top of her game

VB in 2007: seriously, you OK hun?

In her place is a successful businesswoman, fashion designer and mother of four. And let’s not forget how much of a laugh she’s been having – see James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke for that. ‘Victoria never stops learning,’ says our source. ‘That’s why she’s made it. Every crisis is an opportunity. She’s always said she wants to be at the top of her game and she’s seriously highflying at the moment.’ It’s a big deal for VB, who seems to have the A-list pandering to her every move – even Nicole Kidman was pictured in her AW17 collection last week. Of course, it’s not just Nicole Kidman wearing Victoria putting the VB AW17 on a shoot work in. While the designer is keeping up appearances in the fashion world, it seems David – and the children – are putting in the legwork too. ‘Brooklyn is a major asset to the family business,’ adds our source. ‘Cruz and Romeo are thriving at school and Harper is the perfect protégée, learning at Victoria’s knee so that one day she’ll be able to take the reins of the fashion empire.’ More on that over the page…

he completely stole the show at the Target launch party, looking super-sweet in Victoria’s flower pocket dress, £23. Talk about brand ambassador. Harper was also playing around with VB’s Brit props, including trying out the red phone box while wearing a crown. Aww. She was joined by new BFF Heavenly Joy – and yes, they are wearing matching dresses *cuteness overload*. Actress, singer, dancer and Instagram star Heavenly has almost 54,000 followers (we reckon VB approves of that friendship). Talking about how Harper inspired the collection, VB said: ‘I based it on the time that I spend with Harper and what we like to do together. She loves a pretty dress, but she’s also a bit of a tomboy.’

But Is All ? s m e e S t I As

While things are going well for VB’s business, there’s still a lot going on behind the scenes

W

ith her sellout collection winning over the A-list, VB is on top of the world. But that doesn’t mean cracks aren’t starting to show. The designer has been on a charm offensive since the scandal surrounding husband David (dubbed Beckileaks), where he called the honours committee ‘c**ts’ in emails. ‘It’s all going exceptionally well, but it’s thanks to Victoria’s guidance that they’ve been able to weather the storm,’ says our source. As we told you before, Victoria’s the one who took charge of the situation to ensure that she and David were back on top form, but it’s taken its toll on them both. ‘Vic’s been working hard, but nobody realises how much effort she’s actually put in to redeem the family after David’s

mistakes,’ adds another source. ‘It’s left her almost at burnout as she’s been working all hours of the day and while she’s happy right now, she’s still a bit miffed about what happened and how it risked their future.’ We’re only four months into 2017 and Vic’s already shown her new collection at New York Fashion Week, launched her second make-up collection and now her first fusion line, amassing a huge number of air miles along the way. It’s not exactly a schedule we envy. ‘The hours have put a strain on her relationship,’ says our insider. ‘However, she knows this and is keen to rectify it by setting aside proper time together with David very soon. The two of them are going to take a break after her birthday and really celebrate their success.’ We can only hope – if there’s one person who needs some enforced time off, it’s Vic.

M

eghan and Harry, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S… yeah, you get the picture. Prince Harry, 32, and his girlfriend of six months (officially), Meghan Markle, 35, are very much in love and things are getting serious. Divorcee Megan was even reportedly introduced to the Queen on Mother’s Day. As Look previously reported, they’ve discussed their engagement privately, but as suggestions that an announcement is on the way surface, Meghan’s battling a number of ‘issues’ that could prevent her future happiness – and one of them could be the Queen herself. Oh, we just want a happy ending…

The BFF

The Divorce according to an archaic ruling by George iii’s Royal Marriages act of 1772, royal families are prohibited from marrying ‘Catholics, commoners or divorcees’. Unfortunately, Meghan is all reportedly all three (she went to a Catholic school). this has now been relaxed, but the first six royals in line to the throne supposedly have to ask the Queen for permission.

The r oy a l fa m i l y would be appalled

The Sister

Samantha Markle, 52, is Meghan’s estranged sister, who reportedly changed her surname from Grant to Markle recently (hmm) and also spoke to the media last year, claiming: ‘Meghan is narcissistic and selfish. i think the royal family would be appalled.’ it was rumoured she was writing a tell-all book, but last week she rubbished the claims, although added that her sister had failed to

Meghan considers US writer lindsay Roth a close pal, with lindsay telling an american mag that Meghan ‘hadn’t changed’. ‘there is a strict protocol around talking to the media,’ says our well-placed palace source. ‘harry is especially aware of this and it really irritates him.’ it can’t help that lindsay is a royal obsessive, posting several excited tweets after sending the Duchess of Cambridge her book and getting a polite ‘thank you’.

The Social Outlook Since getting involved with harry, Meg’s dialled down her social media posts. as look went to press, she hadn’t posted in over a month and there are some new omissions from her insta feed. look noticed that a post regarding the name of the Queen’s royal horse from September 2015 can no longer be accessed...

a term coined because Kate was said to be prepared to wait around until Will proposed. no mention that Kate probably wanted to really think about the fact she was marrying a prince – which FYi, is totes stressful.

‘No proper job’ there were several comments about Kate’s ‘job’ at her parent’s party planning business, suggesting that she wouldn’t be good at royal engagements. We think she’s smashed that one, right?

‘Social climber’ Kate and sis Pippa were dubbed ‘the Wisteria Sisters’ for their social climbing ability on the party scene. Guys, don’t you know the key to success is networking? Duh, just because Kate’s good at it.

The Real CosT of living WiTh MuM and dad

‘I’ve Turned Into A Teenager’ A new survey reveals over a quarter of us are back with our parents in a bid to get on the property ladder. But what’s it really like?

WORDS: GiSelle WainWRiGht. phOtO: Getty (pOSeD By MODel)

I

t seems as if there’s a new survey every day about the sorry state of the housing market for millennials. Not only can we not afford a deposit, but there’s a severe shortage of houses being built. Over the past year, while property prices have crept up by 7.5 per cent, wages have only increased by 1.9 per cent. It’s depressing reading. A study last week revealed that only a third of millennials can afford to buy a house and, of those surveyed, 35 per cent head to the bank of mum and dad for financial help, while a huge 27 per cent return to actually live with our mums and dads in a bid to save for the purchase. But what effect can that actually have on your home life? ‘I moved back in with my parents in December, after living in London with mates for two years,’ says Karen, 28, who works in publishing. ‘I desperately want to buy my own place, but there’s no way I could have saved enough – this was the last option. It was fun at first as my mum @lookmagazine

I feel like I’ve turned into a teenager again.’ According to our psychologists, this regression is common – and it can be harmful to your health. ‘There are many stressors involved in moving back with parents,’ says psychologist Dr Arthur Cassidy. ‘Making compromises can cause conflict and raise tensions. fail to conform to certain criteria or disturb parents’ sleep routines, for example, it causes stress for both parties.’ Ouch. Not good. No wonder millennials are being labelled ‘the anxious generation’. So what’s to be done? The Government has admitted the housing market is ‘broken’ and vowed to build more homes, but that’s not really helping us right now. All we can hope is that the more we talk about the issue together, the quicker the solutions will come.

‘There Are Negatives And There Are Positives’

Amy Ladley, 23, a self-employed dance teacher from Manchester, reveals what it’s been like to move back home ‘My boyfriend Ste and i have been living at my parents’ house while we’re saving up. We’ve converted the top floor into a bedroom/living area and although we do contribute a small amount for bills and food, my parents don’t ask for more, so we can put away around £1,000 per month. ‘We’re lucky, but getting used to being back at home was still quite stressful. you lookmagazineuk

definitely feel as though you have less independence, although being able to enjoy Mum’s cooking is a bonus for us both. ‘Of course, privacy does come into it and the lack of freedom can be tricky – we can never just stroll around in minimal clothing and we always have to be considerate about noise (if you know what i mean!). But it’ll all be worth it when we have our own place.’ lookmagazine

s far as designer collaborations go, Uniqlo likes to approach them with less noise than other brands. There’s no social media takeover and no super-celeb endorsements. The high street store has, for example, been working with former Hermès artistic director Christophe Lemaire for the past few years and the designer now heads up his own line, Uniqlo U. The aesthetic is clean, timeless and takes a directional approach to classic pieces like short-sleeved shirts, shift dresses and pleated midi skirts. And if one fashion force wasn’t enough, Uniqlo also works with French style pin-up Inès de La Fressange, who creates basics elevated by her contemporary take on femininity. Joining the fray is Brit J.W. Anderson, renowned for his innovative designs. The multi-award-winning designer will create both menswear and womenswear for AW17. ThIS dReSS With a campaign starring supermodel Liu Wen, Next’s new season mojo is intact. In fact, people are already after one piece in particular… words: HannaH Banks-walker @HBankswalker

ast summer, the world (no exaggeration) lost its head over Ukrainian designer Vita Kin’s dresses, which are a bohemian dream – all billowing sleeves, soft cotton and intricate vyshyvanka embroidery. We pined for them, the fashion set Top, £40, (Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine, Next Miroslava Duma, Pandora Sykes and Chiara Ferragni to name but a few) Instagrammed them and now the high street has adopted the trend. We haven’t, however, seen any dress more enjoyable than Next’s breezy new buy. Part of the new summer offering, this little frock can be seen on the supermodel frame of Liu Wen in the brand’s high summer campaign (shot by acclaimed street style photographer Phil Oh) and has sent the public crazy on Instagram. When Next posted a pic, comments @lookmagazine

lookmag

ranged from ‘Love this dress!’ to ‘How do I buy this??’ and ‘Why do they taunt me with more embroidery?!’. We feel you, ladies. With some sizes already sold out (don’t worry, you can pre-order for a later delivery online), this is shaping up to be one of the most coveted high street buys of the season, so get your skates on. If worst comes to worst and you can’t get your hands on it, there’s a similar style of blouse, which comes in red and blue. Looks like we can all live out our boho dreams this summer, then.

ashing your hair can feel like a chore. Even those with shorter, lowmaintenance strands will agree, sometimes you don’t have the time to do the lather, condition and rinse. That’s when dry shampoo steps in and saves the day. But blasting your roots three days running can cause the rest of your hair to look a bit meh. So we’ve enlisted Michael Lendon, Aveda’s advanced master creative director, to tell us how to revive our locks.

Greasy Roots Soap And Glory Rushower Scent-sational Dry Shampoo, £4 ‘Day-three roots are more oily and the top of your hair starts to look greasy, limp and flat. this happens because of a build-up of excess sebum on the scalp. use a powderbased product to refresh the roots and add lift.’

Living Proof Nourishing Oil, £36 ‘Most people find their ends begin to feel drier before wash day. this is because damage is more prominent in this area of our hair, so we feel like our split ends have become more visible. Reach for a rich oil to nourish and refresh your ends and seal split ends.’

You’re probably looking for a bank holiday treat for your BFF, aren’t you? No? OK, well just treat yourself, then. Either way, the only motif on the menu right now is anything lobster related

n writing this page, we did a bit of research on lobsters. Let’s just say they’re pretty weird. And we’re not sure that they do indeed mate for life, or even have friends, given that they’re actually quite aggressive. But let’s pretend for a moment that Phoebe Buffay is, in fact, correct and lobsters are the picture of true love. That would explain the feelings we’re having for these new buys, which are all about the ocean-dwelling fellas, splashed across beautiful accessories and kitsch tees. From Mango’s top-handle bag and embellished slippers to Kurt Geiger’s irresistible mules, it seems lobsters are fashion’s dish du jour. And OK, so Anthropologie’s clutch may be a shrimp, not a lobster, but we don’t like to discriminate. Whether you and your own lobster (platonic or otherwise) buy matching crustacean loot or you keep this trend to yourself, it’s already been featured on the Gucci catwalk and some of our favourite street-style stars. That’s why we just had to share it with you – you can’t call us shellfish. Sorry.

It has the perfect mixture of warm and metallic tones to reflect light, creating a glossy, three-dimensional effect.’ B lo r a n g e ‘Set to be one of the biggest colours of the season. As the name suggests, it’s a mixture of orange, pink, rose gold and peach tones on a blonde base.’ n u d e ‘A combination of matte, natural and neutral tones that can be used across blondes and brunettes. A shade to suit everyone.’ i c e B lo n d e ‘Think of this as an arctic blonde combining white, ash and cool tones. It’s a bright, clean and fresh blonde.’ Christel Lundqvist, founder of STIL Salon, says: ‘We’re moving away from warmer balayages colour towards cleaner, brighter overall colour. That poker straight hair of your teens is officially back, and it’s great for showing off super-shine and length. This time around, though, we’ve learnt hair protector and serum is a must. Blow-dry tips from ghd global brand ambassador Adam Reed: WORDS: CHLOE BURCHAM. PHOTOS: INSTAGRAM, PIxELEYES

● Build texture by sectioning larger areas of hair when styling

and drying. It will prevent damage by spreading the heat over a wider surface area and create a more undone, chic look. ● Paddle brushes are key in spring. The big, flat shape is smoothing and anti-static, so it’s the ideal fix for hair that’s still suffering after the harsh winter months. ● Once you’ve finished drying your hair, use the cool button on your hairdryer to lock your style in place and add shine. ghd Air Hairdryer, £99

Apply got2b Volumaniac bodifying mousse to damp hair, and dry. Next, sprinkle got2b Powder’ful volumizing styling powder into the roots.

Take your hair obsession to the next, extremely stylish, level with bubble ponies, AKA the style to master this summer. Don’t be fooled, though – it’s easier to recreate than it appears…

After sectioning the hair into two, start creating the ‘bubbles’, beginning at the roots and working your way down. Use small hair elastics to tie each bubble and wrap silver string around them.

3

Tease the hair in each bubble to create a fuller look, then, once you’ve tied your last bubble, finish with got2b Glued blasting freeze spray for ultimate hold.

Push Your Limits There’s a new breed of workouts emerging and they are tough. We’re talking teary eyes and post-workout delayed-onset muscle soreness that lasts for days. Look writer Lucy sweated her way through four of the UK’s most demanding classes…

Flatline

gymbox, London Membership from £78 pm or £20 per visit l Dubbed the hardest class in the world, Flatline tests strength and stamina over 45 minutes. From box jump burpees to rope climbs, you’re faced with five rounds of six gruelling, high intensity moves. the VerdiCt It’s hard for sure, but it’s not impossibly difficult. There’s no getting off lightly, though – the instructor wore a top with the line ‘I don’t care, work harder’.

Epulsive

knightsbridge, London Sessions start at £75, with packages and home visits available l A 20-minute EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) workout claims to burn up to 500 calories in just 20 minutes, engaging 98 per cent of muscles instead of the usual 50 per cent in conventional workouts. the VerdiCtWearing an EMS suit, I’m plugged into a machine that sends pulses through my muscles. Performing high-intensity moves while the pulses become more intense is friggin’ hard work! Four days later my glutes are still sore, but after a few sessions my bum looked rounder.

HEAT

Virgin aCtiVe, pLanned to roLL out nationwide Later this year £46 pm on a yearly contract l This 60-minute class sees members switching between bursts of intense cardio, resistance training and drills. the VerdiCt The leg burn from sprinting on a curved treadmill is so painful. Then you do bear crawls wearing a resistance bungee harness. You walk out famished, so that’s got to count for something.

FGT HIIT

Fitness First, nationwide Membership starts at £25 pm l This class features high intensity, 30-second intervals with equal bursts of rest, using Dynamic Movement Training, body weight and Freestyle equipment to maximise output and elevate the heart. the VerdiCt Thirty seconds doesn’t sound long. But oh, it really is. It left me feeling pumped – in a good way. You’ll deserve a serious carb-fest after this.

Plus! Be:Fit London business design Centre, 28-30 apriL Tickets from £25 Fitspo central, this is like a really fun gym. Whether you want to mingle with some of the fitness industry’s biggest names (think Look influencers Joe Wicks, Clean Eating Alice and Danielle Peazer) or wander around nibbling on healthy food samples, this is where you need to be. Be:Fit is Europe’s largest fitness festival focused on women, filled with the latest health brands, motivational talks, sports and body treatments and game-changing workout classes. Hey

Busy Girl

. LAUGH. LIVE.

To make you smile, here’s your weekly dose of feelgood news…

Happy… Straw StarS

Once only acceptable as a means of transporting a picnic, straw bags are now the carry-all du jour. Originally championed by style pin-up Jane Birkin, we’ve recently spotted Alexa Chung carrying her own straw tote and now we’re smitten. Whether you opt for a Bag, £24 traditional basket or for a chic Bohemia Design circular style, there’s no cooler way to carry your essentials.

Happier… get Your FeSti on

Even if you don’t have a ticket for Coachella, it’ll still give you a multitude of reasons to smile. Firstly, it marks the start of festival season, which is all the reassurance we need that summer’s nearly here. Secondly, thanks to the internet, we can all keep up with the action. Beyoncé may not be performing anymore, but we’re sure Lady Gaga and Radiohead will keep us entertained. Plus the A-list attendees make for some excellent people-watching.

Happiest…

Purple Power

the Future oF toothpaSte iS More colourFul than You Might think… If we told you that the easiest, safest way to a brighter smile was through purple toothpaste, would you believe us? Well, thanks to Pearl Drops’ new Instant Natural White polish, it’s the truth. Using charcoal innovation – a combo of red optical enhancers and black activated charcoal – this wonder product doesn’t just deliver instant whitening, it also lifts impurities, giving you your healthiest teeth yet. Say cheese…

Feel egg-cellent

In our opinion, there’s nothing that competes with Christmas, but we have to admit, Easter comes pretty close. With the flowers in full bloom, Easter doesn’t just bring longer evenings and (hopefully) sunshine, it’s also a brilliant excuse to eat egg-shaped chocolate until the cows (and their newborn calves) come home. It’s not just the big eggs, either: the shops are packed with Creme Eggs, Mini Eggs and – as a nonchocolate alternative – hot cross buns.

It’s the time of year where we get four glorious days off in a row. Here’s how to make the most of it

1Get Up early

Yes, yes, we get it. You might think a lie-in is the right way to spend your Friday, but shake off the hangover from Thursday night by hitting the gym, going for a swim or just crawl to a nice cafe for a fry-up. Recent studies have shown that the earlier you wake, the more positive your mood will be that day.

It’s unavoidable. From sorting out washing to paying that bill – get it done on Friday. Leave it ’til Monday and you a) won’t do it at all or b) will be weeping from the pain of trying to be organised while hungover.

...& One More Thing

S e t To Sell Out

Following on from the success of nearly every serum launched by No7, its latest Restore & Renew Face And Neck Multi Action Serum 50ml, £36, launches this week. If you can beat the queues to get your hands on one, it’ll be seriously worth your while. With ‘tech neck’ now a thing (sagging skin and wrinkles due to hours of staring down at our phones – thanks, Insta) the experts keep telling us it’s time to start treating our necks like our faces. The new formula targets neck firmness and texture as well as all of the things you’d want it to do for your face. Two birds, one serum.

If you hold Kendall Jenner as your main sartorial inspiration, then chances are the answer is ‘yes’. The starlet stepped out in what looked like a pair of denim cut-off shorts, but they actually turned out to be extremely distressed jeans with only the side and ankle seams remaining intact. A rip too far? We’ll let next week’s #ootd posts decide…

£800K: beY’s Insta Cash-In Ever wondered how much A-listers really make from their Instas? Well, read it and weep… Taking into account her following and engagement rates, social media research firm D’Marie Analytics estimates that Beyoncé likely pockets £800,000 PER POST. Slay.
