! Film is a vehicle which has the ability to encapsulate complex, abstract narratives and concepts easily and succinctly. Using infinite combinations of visual elements such as actors, costume and locations, dialogue, both verbal and nonverbal, in combination with auditory elements such as music and sound effects, film attempts to answer questions such as “who am I?” and “where do I stand in the world?”
!
Reflections of the Self combines the work of Erwin Blumenfeld, Candice Breitz and Alex Da Corte to investigate how film informs concepts of self, illustrating the ongoing struggle between the fabricated and the true.
!
Identity is an all encompassing component of our place in the world, these artists explore how one’s identity is expressed within a private realm versus how it is perceived, influenced and extended in the public. Each artist’s work represents a different aspect of formed identity. Collectively, they use film to display different concepts of self. The pieces provide intercession and interweave how we identify and interact with the constant yet ever-changing concept of the self.
! This exhibit will be in a gallery setting. The space will include viewing screens separated by three walls that will lie in a horizontal row. As the audience goes through the gallery, the intended feeling is that through the progression of each of the three walls, the viewer will enter a new realm of identity. At the end, they will be confronted with a mirrored room where they are faced with an image of themselves. The show seeks to interpret identity for the viewer and remind them of their own identity as a means of closure.

True Life Alex Da Corte
!
2013 Duration: 3:44 Da Corte uses popular culture iconography and motifs to explore how these elements shape our sense of self and reality. Through his video work, he questions the virtual identity/self we control and create and the gap that exists between the physical self. It is in these things that are not inherently embedded in us, that we observe the malleability of our identities by foreign inuences. We become a reference for outsiders and ourselves alike.
