CANAL DISTRICT In the early 17th century, Dutch economy thrived and Amsterdam experienced an unparalleled population boom. The medieval town centre became too small, and the local authorities decided to create a city extension: the canal area. Three main canals - Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht - were arranged in a semicircle around the medieval part of Amsterdam, interconnected by smaller side canals. Rich merchants could buy plots by auction and construct new homes for themselves along the canals. Construction works began in 1613 and the first part was finished in 1656. The district is almost entirely preserved and was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2010.

The Andaz Hotel is located in the very centre of Amsterdam, between two of the three main canals, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht. This historical location inspired the interior design: the Golden Age, Delft blue porcelain, navigation and the city’s vibrant knowledge economy all inform the look and feel of the hotel. The building that holds the hotel is that of the former public library of Amsterdam, built in 1975 by architect De Klerk. The library was relocated to Oosterdokseiland in 2007. This heritage informs the design of the hotel with books - both physical and deconstructed - forming the look and feel. Specifically, the imagery of historic books about and from Amsterdam served as inspiration for the wallpaper and other

WESTERDOKSEILAND OD 205 location function contributed by

Westerdokseiland is a peninsula between Westerdok harbour and Het IJ which used to house a railway yard. It was constructed in 1842 and redeveloped into a residential area between 2007 and 2009. The master plan concept, designed by OD 205, consists of perimeter blocks with communal courtyards and in total 900 apartments (328 apartments per hectare). The long narrow site was divided into four blocks between a straight quay along the west side, and a curving wall along the east side facing the IJ. A different team of architects developed each of the four courtyard blocks. The architects involved are among others: Meyer & Van Schooten, Architekten Cie en Heren 5 (La Grande Cour, 2007); and MVRDV

An old turn track bridge on Westerdokskade in Amsterdam, dating from 1922, has been transformed into a cafÊ-restaurant by Dutch architect Pi de Bruijn (De Architekten Cie.). A simple, transparent volume was placed on top of the old bridge. The modernist box has an all-round folding glass façade, giving visitors a view of the surrounding harbour and water from every angle. Inside, two separate units containing the kitchen, toilets and bar are placed freely within the volume, giving the interior a light and open character.

The masterplan for the IJDock, a mixed-use complex of 89,000 square metres, was devised by the Architectengroep (Dick van Gameren, nowadays partner at Mecanoo and Bjarne Mastenbroek, founder of SeArch). The process started with a volume of maximum size and height, which then was excavated to create individual buildings. Sightlines, views of the surrounding neighbourhoods, transportation access and the on-water location influenced the design of the sculptural volume. Planning of the individual buildings was handed off to Claus en Kaan Architecten for the Palace of Justice (see photo on the left), Jan Bakers and Ben Loerakker for the Hotel, and Zeinstra van Gelderen for the Water Police Offices, apartments and office spaces. The EYE Film Institute, opened in 2012, houses four cinemas, the national film archive, spaces for temporary and permanent exhibitions, a cafĂŠ-restaurant, offices and a museum shop. Its sculptural shape reacts to the surroundings and makes it a real icon on the waterfront. The light is reflected in multiple ways by the smooth, crystalline surfaces, thus subjecting the appearance of the building to permanent optical changes during the course of the day. Movement and light manifest themselves as essential parameters of film as a medium in architectural production.

The IJsei roof is the fourth large roof in a row for the Central Station in Amsterdam. It gives coherence and allure to the renewal of the IJ side of the Station Island. The transformation of the Station Island in a pleasant and efficient public transport node, is taking shape in this special place in Amsterdam. The clean-up of the square in front of the station is a precondition for a restart of Station Island. To improve the situation on the city side of the station it was necessary to create another solution for bus and car traffic. An obvious solution is found on the IJ side of the Station. The buses literally and figuratively are placed on an equal level with

the trains to create a better connected public transport hub. The bus station is a logical extension of the Central Station. For the detailing a combination is sought between modern materials, techniques and form that matches the existing roofs. The result is a powerful interplay between old and new with an striking result.

MUZIEKGEBOUW AAN ’T IJ 3XN location function contributed by

Located at the head of Oostelijke Handelskade, the ‘Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ’ is the new home of two organizations devoted to modern and non-western music. Each organisation has been given its own architectural identity inside the new building by placing its concert hall in clearly separate volumes. Eye-catcher and unifying element is the gigantic roof. At its headend, the building features a large open space which functions as a public plaza. On the waterside lies a wide square with an outdoor café on the water. The 24 meter high glass façade provides a panoramic view of the river IJ.

This 65 m high, four-star hotel counts 410 rooms and features a touring car terminal, an underground parking garage and several conference rooms. On top of a red ceramic-clad plinth, which runs through to the Passenger Terminal, stands the nine-storey hotel tower. The faรงade of the hotel is made out of horizontal strips of glass, granite, marble and white concrete. Due to the stripe pattern and the materials, the faรงade is unusually abstract: neither the floors nor the function can be read from outside.

The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) was the first completed building in the regeneration master plan for the revitalization of the Eastern Docklands. Big cruise-ships can moore at the large terminal in walking distance from the city centre, next to the Music Building and Movenpick Hotel. It houses a combination of functions: large meeting spaces, a touring car terminal, offices, a conference centre and an underground parking garage. While in high season foreign visitors are welcomed, in low season the building is used for events, large commercial happenings, exhibitions and conferences. The PTA is a joint venture between NS Stations (Dutch Railway Stations) and the Harbour of Amsterdam. London architecture firm HOK provided it with a

Oostelijke Handelskade links the centre of Amsterdam with the Eastern Docklands. A string of monoliths stands along the quayside, organized around a number of old warehouses. The existing warehouses served as starting points for the development of new buildings. A differentiated complex of Tetris-style interlocking residential and office buildings was created, preserving the views from the road to the IJ. A 285 meter long bridge over the IJ canal links Oostelijke Handelskade to the new housing area on Java-island. The logic location for the bridge was the place, where 1934 warehouse The Zwijger stood. Instead of demolishing the old warehouse, the client decided to pierce the bridge through the building. The bridge is designed for cars, bicycles and pedestrians. The separate roads for these traffic types differ in inclination. The underside of the bridge has an asymmetric curving shape, and its “legs� are set wide apart in the water. Parts of the road-deck are detachable to allow incidental passing of large boats.

WAREHOUSE DE ZWIJGER ARCHITECTENBUREAU J. VAN STIGT location function contributed by

This warehouse was originally built in 1934 (designed by architect J. de Bie Leuveling Tjeenk) and is an example of ‘functional expressionism’. It was used as a cooling house for food. From 1960 onwards it deteriorated and was squatted and used as an unofficial rehearsal studio by several alternative bands like Herman Brood and Loïs Lane. Many plans for re-use and re-development failed. In 2001 a bridge was built right through the building. Shortly afterward it became a listed monument. Now the warehouse is a place for media and culture. It houses a TV-studio, exhibition space, ateliers, conference rooms, offices, several stages for theatre, music, concerts and lectures. On the ground floor is a public bar and restaurant.

JAVA ISLAND SJOERD SOETERS location function contributed by

Java and KNSM Island were both created at the end of the 19th century as wave-breakers for Oostelijke Handelskade. Later they were enlarged and became part of the harbour docks. When the harbour moved away in the 1960s, the islands were deserted, and in the 1990s they were transformed into housing areas for ca. 2500 inhabitants. On Java Eiland, five architecture firms each designed an apartment building. These houses are distributed along the south and north quay according to a seemingly random pattern. In the four smaller side canals, younger architects got the chance to design smaller canal houses. In-between lies a green corridor, which is only accessible for bikes and pedestrians.

The Lloyd Hotel, a former immigrants’ hostel, is centrally situated in the Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands area. It is a monument, dating from 1921. The original architect was Evert Breman, who was commissioned by the Royal Holland Lloyd. Several Dutch architects, designers and artists have transformed this monument into a new hotel. MVRDV were responsible for the design of the main hall, the heart of the building. Here a new dining room is cut out of the existing structure, forming a 6-storey void with three boxes and platforms hanging inside

The masterplan for the conversion of KNSM-island consists of a central boulevard, along which large residential blocks are aligned, interspersed with some old buildings, such as a former harbour canteen. Housing block Piraeus, recognizable from afar due to its sloping roof, measures 170 by 57 meters. It comprises 304 apartments, commercial spaces, an underground parking garage and two enclosed public spaces. It is wrapped around a 19th century office building, which now contains appartments. The south side of Piraeus is 4 stories high, the north 8. The block counts 150 different types of apartments, 95 % of which are social housing. All faรงades are different in rhythm, details and openings.

THE WHALE DE ARCHITEKTEN CIE. location function contributed by

The Whale is one of three big “meteorites” which have landed in-between the lowrise row houses on the Islands of Borneo and Sporenburg. Thanks to its sculptural shape, this building by Frits van Dongen (De Architekten Cie.) is a real landmark. Inside are 194 apartments and 1100 m2 office and retail space. Underneath is a large parking garage with 179 places. The traditional closed block (100 by 60 m) has been transformed by lifting the two, so the public space flows through underneath. Inside the block is a private garden, designed by West 8. The apartments are accessed from galleries running along the inner façade.

A total of 2500 dwellings (up to 100 dwellings per ha.) have been built on the two former harbour peninsulas Borneo and Sporenburg. The area was covered with a carpet of low-rise/ high-density back-to-back patio houses, interrupted by 3 large landmark buildings. Various architects each designed a type of patio house, which were grouped in small clusters and re-appear in several places on the islands. The main challenge was to develop a typology in which a small patio provides daylight and private outdoor space for the inhabitants.

BORNEO SPORENBURG BRIDGES WEST 8 location function contributed by

Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential islands Sporenburg and Borneo. The pedestrian bridge is very high and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small marina. The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes. Both bridges are designed by Adriaan Geuze (West 8).

In this street, which was part of the Borneo-Sporenburg masterplan by West 8, the municipality sold 60 waterfront plots to individuals through a lottery. The lucky winners could choose an architect and build their own waterfront house. Nearly all Dutch architects of standing contributed a row villa, turning the street into an open-air museum of Dutch architecture of the late 1990s. The plot dimensions are 16 meter long, with various width of 4.2 to 6.0 meter. The houses were designed by several architects, such as Hertzberger (no.126), van Velsen (no.120), Hรถhne & Rapp (no.62) and MVRDV (no.26 & 40).

NEMO RENZO PIANO location function contributed by

NEMO is a science museum for children, located on a small plot in the old port of Amsterdam. It is built on top of the IJtunnel, which connects Amsterdam Noord with the city centre. Surrounded by water, the building has the shape of a ship’s bow and a green copper façade. The public roof is designed as a large grandstand and acts as a public piazza, offering a beautiful view over the old town.

CONSERVATORY OF AMSTERDAM DE ARCHITEKTEN CIE. location function contributed by

The Conservatorium building, designed by Frits van Dongen (De Architekten Cie.), had to fit into a narrow slot on Oosterdokseiland. The music school building has a glass faรงade, which not only lets daylight into the areas behind, but also serves as a sound barrier. For the same reason, all corridors are arranged along the faรงade, while the functional spaces lie in the core of the building. It houses 5 auditoriums, classrooms and study rooms, a library and offices.

The Public Library is the central one of three large new buildings on the restructured Oosterdokseiland, near the Central Station. The main shape of the building is attuned to the surroundings: both the apartments to the west of the library and the street to the eastmust receive enough daylight. At the same time, situated as it is beside the open waters of the Oosterdok, the library had to contribute to an attractive skyline. A raised plinth offers a refined transitional area between the upper and lower floors, and the reading and study rooms resemble terraces, arranged around large voids. The top floor accommodates the library theatre and conference rooms.

Built by the architectural cooperative Van der Mey, De Klerk and Kramer, this monument - which now houses a luxury hotel - is considered to be the first building in Amsterdam School style. Its brick exterior is covered in ornaments referring to the shipping companies which once had their offices in the building. The building was supposed to function as a practical, modern office building and at the same time point back to the prosperous shipping tradition of the Netherlands. It is shaped like a moored ship, the “starboard side” being on the waterfront and “the bow” pointing towards the Central Station.

The building of local architecture centre Arcam is compact and sculptural. It contains three storeys, interconnected by voids. The offices are situated on the top storey. On street level are the exhibition space and information desk, and on water level is a space for small-scale events and group receptions. The blobshaped building is clad with coated aluminium strips, folded over the roof. On the waterside, the building is cut open to reveal its interior behind a large glass faรงade.

HERMITAGE AMSTERDAM HANS VAN HEESWIJK ARCHITECTEN location function contributed by

The Amstelhof building, which was built in the 17th century as a home for the elderly, has been renovated and refurbished to house a branch of the Hermitage Museum from St. Petersburg. The Hermitage has a collection of three million works of art, far more than can ever be shown in St. Petersburg. Pieces from the collection were first shown in the Nieuwe Kerk. After several successful exhibitions of Russian art, the idea was born to establish an annex of the Hermitage here in Amsterdam. Besides fine arts, this centre of Russian culture is used as a venue for concerts and symposiums, houses a library, a documentation centre and shops.
