NEXT CONNECTS This travel guide provides a sample of the projects designed by NEXT architects. The travel guide is a unique genre in architecture, since the choice of projects is not based on when construction takes place, but where. NEXT architect’s main drive is to create meaningful places that offer space for human interaction. This is also true of the places we present in this booklet, all of which are located in and around Amsterdam. For NEXT architects this proves to be exceptionally fertile ground to develop unique projects that contribute to the mix of living and working environments in the Dutch capital. The projects also reflect the joy we experience in expressing this diversity. The completion of the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol provided us with the incentive to produce this guide and embark on this architectural journey. As an international hub, Schiphol is perhaps the most literal example of a place that connects: it is a gateway to the rest of the world. But we find it even more rewarding to show you a daycare centre in the Rivierenbuurt neighbourhood of the city – a place where children have their first contact with the outside world and learn to establish friendships. In Purmerend, you can see how a new bridge links the old and new parts of the town and brings people together at its highest point; while in Almere, a villa reveals how the lives of five different families intertwine. The way in which people interact and the surroundings in which they choose to do this varies greatly, depending on their stage of life. Students in Uilenstede will seek out different qualities from those of young entrepreneurs in Riekerpolder, or families who settle in Amsterdam North. We feel enormously privileged to be able to shape these different environments. For that reason, we hope that travellers will enjoy discovering an environment they feel at home in. Based in Amsterdam, NEXT architects is an international firm of architects specializing in design and research projects in urban planning, architecture, interior design and infrastructure since 1999. In 2004, NEXT opened a second office in Beijing, China.

HOLLAND BOULEVARD DUTCH LANDSCAPE AT SCHIPHOL AIRPORT location function client

Schiphol, Amsterdam, NL (2017) commercial space, tourism, culture, waiting area Schiphol Airport, Rijksmuseum

You can wander through the Dutch polder landscape while at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The landscape was the main source of inspiration behind the new Holland Boulevard, an international departures hall designed by NEXT architects and that now comprises various typical Dutch-inspired sitting rooms. These rooms are separated by low walls; together, they form the horizon of this vast space of 5,000 m2. Each room has its own atmosphere and ambiance and so the Holland Boulevard takes visitors on a real voyage of discovery. The Holland Boulevard is unique to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. In addition to the commercial areas, passengers can visit the

NEMO Science Centre, the airport library and the Rijksmuseum’s new glass pavilion. It also features the work of various Dutch designers. For example, Florentijn Hofman created two huggable works of art for the boulevard and Samira Boon weaved an abstract landscape that is 16 m in length. The Holland Boulevard is a calling card for the kinds of things that the Dutch can be proud of. The Holland Boulevard is located behind the passport control gates between Lounge 2 and Lounge 3.

RIJKSMUSEUM SCHIPHOL A UNIQUE FRAMEWORK FOR DUTCH MASTERPIECES location function client

Schiphol, Amsterdam, NL (2017) museum, shop, culture Rijksmuseum, World of Delights

The Rijksmuseum Schiphol is the highlight of Holland Boulevard, a cultural zone designed by NEXT architects in which passengers at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol can explore Dutch culture and history. The pavilion forms a modern, innovative framework for the masterpieces which the Rijksmuseum is exhibiting at the airport. One of the special things about this museum is that it never closes. This concept of accessibility is also reflected in the pavilion’s unique structure and materials. The museum is built in an innovative way, using 10 cm-wide strips of glass that are stuck together to form a solid glass wall. The resulting semi-transparent

walls filter the light, creating a gradual transition from the hustle and bustle of Schiphol to the peaceful exhibition space. The museum comprises two intersecting U-shapes, giving rise to two spaces and a natural route. The museum shop adds a third U-shape to the ensemble. The shop is completely transparent and a valuable addition to the museum. The museum pavilion is located within the area of Holland Boulevard, between Lounge 2 and Lounge 3.

B.AMSTERDAM THE BUILDING AS A VIBRANT ECOSYSTEM location function client with

Amsterdam, NL (2016) office, transformation, restaurant, bar, rooftop park Timeless Investments, COD B.Amsterdam, Studio Fabrick, Skepp, Luuk van den Broek

Having been vacant for 11 years, the former IBM premises in Rieker Business Park in Amsterdam seemed unsuitable for redevelopment. But now it has been given a new life as a hotspot for start-ups and companies from the creative sector. To this end, the building has been designed like a city, with streets, squares, amenities, and hospitality establishments. Within this framework, the building’s tenants dynamically contribute to the development of the city by way of their workspaces. For these users, the building is much more than just a workplace; it is an ecosystem characterized by interaction and discovery. This vision for the building is reinforced by its distinctive, industrial look and feel, and by the reuse of materials. One of the main features is the new entrance, which has transformed the forecourt into a space for interaction and exchange. Restaurant Bureau on the roof is surrounded by a green roof park, with a vegetable garden and old cars which serve as meeting places.

CAMPUS UILENSTEDE A NEW HEART FOR THE CAMPUS location function client

Amstelveen, NL (2015) education, leisure, student housing Lingotto, DUWO

This project is an excellent example of how even cost-friendly measures can have a major influence on the way in which a location is experienced and used. The refurbishment of the Uilenstede Campus is designed to facilitate encounters and interaction. The original central building comprised a low section of buildings that connected three towers. Cutting this section in two enabled us to open up the centre so we could create a central meeting point at the heart of the campus. It feels safer and homelier and students now have a reason to meet up at the central square. Thanks to its new design, the square has become a livelier place where students enjoy not only studying but also living, working and socializing. So while most of the buildings’ original structure has been retained, it has been overhauled and made future-proof.

RIV// SPACIOUS HOMES IN AMSTERDAM location function client

Amsterdam, NL (2017) housing COD

RIV// responds to the major demand for spacious family homes in and around the city of Amsterdam. This residential building has a unique location in the Kop Zuidas district, between the vibrant neighbourhoods of De Pijp and the Rivierenbuurt and surrounded by the greenery and spaciousness of the river Amstel. The attractive location and its history formed the inspiration for the design. Staggered blocks in the facade allow light to enter the homes and ensure a spectacular view. In addition, they create spacious outdoor areas and provide privacy. The red-brick materials reference the Amsterdam School of Architecture that is typical of the Oud Zuid and Rivierenbuurt neighbourhoods.

ADDRESS Gaasterlandstraat 4-96 Zuidelijke Wandelweg 61-87 1079 PS Amsterdam WEBSITE www.riv-wonen.nl

With its high entrances and large porches, the RIV// complex has stature. Yet at the same time it is accessible. The building’s details and staggered facade lend a human dimension to its sizeable capacity. As such, RIV// is rooted in its context and connected to the surrounding city. The construction of RIV// is being completed in 2017.

HESTIA DAYCARE CENTRE ARCHITECTURE AS A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY location function client with

Amsterdam, NL (2011) education, kindergarten Hestia Kinderopvang Claudia Linders

This building was designed like a city. At the Hestia Daycare Centre children go on a voyage of discovery and explore new places every day. This ties in with the Hestia centre’s approach to educating children, which is based on the idea that they already possess knowledge and skills and that these should be developed in a playful way. To that end, the centre has been built as a conglomeration of interconnected spaces. In this building you can wander from large spaces to small ones and from high areas to low ones, just like in a real city. Thanks to the centre’s large glass walls, the spaces get a lot of daylight. The transparency at the children’s eye level provides a

ADDRESS Uiterwaardenstraat 542 1079 AZ Amsterdam WEBSITE www.hestiakinderopvang.nl

feeling of continuity between the spaces. The outdoor areas are also part of this indoor city. This was achieved by treating the indoor and outdoor spaces as if they were the same. They form one big integrated ensemble and interact effortlessly, giving the children’s curiosity free rein. The Hestia Daycare Centre was nominated for the Arie Keppler Prize 2012, was given a special mention at the BNA Building of the Year awards 2012 and was included in the Yearbook of Dutch Architecture 2012.

HOUSE M&M GIVING NEW LIFE TO AN OLD SHACK location function with

Amsterdam, NL (2017) private house, transformation Claudia Linders

The 30-metre-long black, graphic facade of House M&M immediately catches the eye as you walk along the perimeter of Funenpark in Amsterdam. House M&M is all about the transformation of an old shack in a unique private residence with studio at just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre. The residence is an excellent example of how to create a unique, striking design that is informed by the specific characteristics of the surroundings. The façade’s sleek lines and gold fencing accentuate the house’s elongated form. The sturdy materials that make up the facade and the steel skeleton of the building allude to the premises’ former function.

ADDRESS Blankenstraat 368 1018 SK Amsterdam

The open-plan residence is accessible via a patio behind the gold fencing. Its heart is formed by a wooden core that houses the facilities. The spaces around these are the living areas. Sightlines along the residence’s entire length create an open interior and a smooth transition from indoor to outdoor.

WIEDEN+KENNEDY A CREATIVE WORKPLACE IN A MONUMENTAL BUILDING location function client

Amsterdam, NL (2008) office, re-use Wieden+Kennedy

The offices of Wieden+Kennedy advertising agency were created by joining two national monuments at Herengracht in Amsterdam together. The labyrinthine project involved connecting buildings from different periods that needed to be remodelled into a 21st-century creative working environment. By unravelling this cluster of monumental premises, NEXT succeeded in creating a clearly-defined, spacious building with spaces for working, spaces for meeting, collaborating, and relaxing. This was achieved using a number of special techniques. The heart of the two buildings was opened up by installing glass chambers that cut through the floors between the different

levels. Double-height presentation and meeting rooms were created in the glass chambers that connect the different levels. Stacking functions in this way created diagonal lines of vision, making the working environment more open and strengthening the connections between the work floors. Wieden+Kennedy is winner of the Lensvelt De Architect interior prize 2008.

WATERFRONT LIVING BY THE IJ location function client

Amsterdam, NL (2020) housing, offices Kop Grasweg C.V. (Hurks and Amvest)

The Waterfront apartment tower is at the forefront of a radical transformation taking place in Amsterdam on the northern bank of the river IJ. The development works will transform one of Amsterdam’s most polluting industrial areas into a sustainable business and residential area based on the principles of the circular economy. The apartment tower houses spacious apartments with views over the water. These apartments stand on a shared foundation of offices that breathe life into the surrounding park. The project’s design connects the area’s industrial past with the modern look of large, glass fronts and horizontal, unbroken

lines. These are the key underlying elements of the design, the centrepiece of which comes in the form of spacious, projecting balconies. The use of concrete gives the residential complex a solid exterior, but with a modern twist thanks to its sleek details, its colour, and the facade’s structure. The Waterfront apartment tower is set for construction in 2020.

HOUSE BUIKSLOTERHAM A WARM HOUSE WITH A ROUGH LOOK location function with

Amsterdam, NL (2017) private house Claudia Linders

The design of this private residence in the no-frills, former industrial part of Amsterdam North was inspired by the vision of a giant, black peach. House Buiksloterham consists of a single open-plan residence on four different levels. As with a peach, at its centre is a wooden core. This is where all the private accommodation and facilities are located, with the surrounding spaces used as living areas. The greenhouse on the roof of the house provides an outdoor extension of the garden on top of the residence. Huis Buiksloterham has managed to create an environment in which indoor and outdoor seamlessly merge, yet retaining the

ADDRESS Kaasjeskruidstraat 37 1033 LS Amsterdam

sense of warmth and intimacy so essential to a home. As nothing has been hidden away, all building materials such as pipes and cables are in full view. The use of wood and red brick gives the building a warm look and feel. The building has a robust outer shell incorporating large windows and a facade entirely made full of black, perforated corrugated sheeting. At night, these perforations create a spectacular light show, illuminating the residence as if it were a lantern.

TOWN HALL BLOEMENDAAL A MUNICIPAL MEETING PLACE location function client with

Overveen, NL (2015) government, office, re-use Municipality of Bloemendaal rudy uytenhaak + partners architecten

Bloemendaal Town Hall is a modern, sustainable town hall, a meeting place that does justice to the location’s characteristic allure and identity. It was originally built as a nineteenthcentury neoclassical outdoor venue. During the renovation by NEXT architects and rudy uytenhaak + partners architecten, the original facade was retained. Behind this façade, the residents of Bloemendaal are welcomed in a multi-functional, energyefficient building. To reflect the town hall’s important public role, the design factored in additional space for a public centre. This space, which is also used for public events, increases the level of

ADDRESS Bloemendaalseweg 158 2051 GJ Overveen WEBSITE www.bloemendaal.nl

interaction between the general public and the government and makes the town hall more transparent and accessible. By merging the original building into the new building in a layered manner, the design creates a unique dialogue between old and new, between history and the present day.

MELKWEGBRIDGE AN ICON FOR THE CITY location function client

Purmerend, NL (2012) bicycle and pedestrian bridge Municipality of Purmerend ADDRESS

The Melkwegbridge is a location with an identity of its own. Extending over the Noordhollandsch Canal, it connects the historical city centre of Purmerend with the Weidevenne neighbourhood. In order to comply with the gradient requirements for bicycle and wheelchair traffic, a bridge must be at least 100 metres long. For this reason, the bridge separates bicycle and wheelchair traffic from pedestrian traffic. The bicycle bridge meanders over the water, which makes it long enough to limit the gradient. At the same time, the elevated pedestrian archway – an extension of the historical Melkweg – offers an extensive view of Purmerend’s old town

Melkwegbrug 1 1441 GP Purmerend

centre. This archway, which is over 12 metres long, provides a panoramic view; here, you can feel the old connect with the new. The various sections of the bridge merge seamlessly into each other, forming a cohesive whole. The bridge is more than just the fastest way across the canal; it is also a destination and an attraction in its own right. Melkwegbridge is the winner of the Iconic Awards 2014 and the 2014 National Steel Prize; received special mention at the BNA Building of the Year awards 2013.

TRAM SQUARE CONNECTING THE OLD AND THE NEW CITY location function client

Amsterdam, NL (2016) bus station, gas station, bike parking, public space Municipality of Purmerend

Purmerend’s new Tram Square is a place for encounters. For many years, this area around the canal was characterised by a busy motorway, a petrol station, and a cluttered bus station. The construction of the Melkwegbridge and the renovation of Tram Square have transformed this former fringe area into a landmark of the town. The bus station has been completely refurbished and moved to the canal bank, creating a public space by the water. To prevent the space from turning into a chaotic collection of disparate objects (benches, bins, information boards, etc.), these facilities have been incorporated into the primary elements, making the square a quality public space in which all

ADDRESS Tramplein 1 1441 GP Purmerend

of the elements speak a common language in terms of materials and detail. The AVIA petrol station was designed in tandem with the covered bicycle shed to provide a comprehensive solution for parking bicycles and refuelling vehicles at the square. By making the bicycle shed underground, it was possible to create an elevated terrace with a view over the water and the square. Tram Square Purmerend was nominated for the Arie Keppler Prize 2016.

VILLA OVERGOOI INTERTWINING FIVE UNIQUE HOMES location function client

Almere, NL (2008) private houses Villa van Vijven

Villa Overgooi is a special residential building. At first glance, it looks like a single villa but there are actually five! It was commissioned by five private clients who had five homes designed on this plot of land measuring 5,000 m2, with the caveat that they should look like a single villa. This led to a series of spatial transformations that merged five unique homes into a single compact building. The design also made the best possible use of the surrounding natural landscape. Each floor was rotated 90 degrees from the floor above/below it, giving the houses two different orientations. The first floor runs from east to west, connecting the view between the street and

ADDRESS Echobos 28 1358 EG Almere

the garden. The second floor runs from north to south, optimizing the views out and the amount of sun the houses receive. Each building was then elevated to give the second floor of each home a view out over the Gooimeer lake dike. Villa Overgooi was nominated for the Dutch AM NAi 2018 and the Golden Pyramid awards 2008.

DAFNE SCHIPPERS BRIDGE INTEGRATING BRIDGE, SCHOOL AND PARK location function client with

Utrecht, NL (2017) bicycle and pedestrian bridge, school, park Municipality of Utrecht rudy uytenhaak + partners architecten, Bureau B+B, ARUP

This unique design integrates a bicycle and pedestrian bridge with a school and a park into one cohesive whole. As such, the Dafne Schippers bridge and elementary school Oog in Al serve a variety of interests. Cyclists, neighbourhood residents, a local primary school, the municipality, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment were all involved in this project. The bridge, which crosses the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal in Utrecht, is the main link in the express cycling route that connects the historical city centre with the new neighbourhood of Leidsche Rijn. Cyclists travelling from the city centre to Leidsche Rijn

ADDRESS Victor Hugoplantsoen 3533 CH Utrecht

will cycle to a height of nine metres as they veer around Victor Hugo park in a wide bend, taking them across the roof of the school and over the canal. In addition, by integrating functions and making the bridge an integral part of the public space in the neighbourhood, it is an important meeting point for local residents and schoolchildren. The double land use with maximum space for greenery makes the Dafne Schippers bridge unique, not only as a bridge but also as a place in its own right.
