I am Min-Wei Lin, a Taiwanese, a daughter of an ordinary family, a design student of Taiwan Tech. Combining sorts of different personality, I am sometimes optimistic or pessimistic, delicate but rugged, sociable and autistic, rational but emotional, organized yet unorganized. Sometime I love myself, somehow I don’t like. But all of the characters build up my life and work.
I majored in industrial design during my bachelor since 2008. While both material application and user experience are the field I’m most interested in, in which I embodied through my graduation project: the Rain Shield, which won the Reddot Design Award in 2012. Actually I don’t really like to take part in international design competitions because I think a good product should be tested and verified by the market. So my partner and I are making efforts in this project. Leaving school is not the end of the Rain Shield, now we are still working on it and having collaboration with a Netherlands city bikes brand called VANMOOF, developing a new style poncho for cycling.
After graduation I worked in an interactive product design studio, as a product designer. It is very different from the experience in school, I became more independent and practical, progressed in my design skills, met more new people, and got more understanding in myself. One year later I choose to go back to school and start my master degree focusing on branding and product marketing. The project I’m currently working on is a research that aimed to map the business models of the design-innovation startups in Taiwan.
This portfolio has gathered some of my favorite design works, hope you can know more about me through these pages, and hope I can have more observation and learn from real life, do more design and be a better person.

Rain Shield - The evolution of umbrella. This is an unbrella with brand-new style. We hope to design an unbrella that is totally different from what it has been so far. Getting rid of the complicate structure of the old ones, it is formed by only a flexible steel wire, with the pointless shape of arches. The way one holds it's more likely to stay against the winds, and one won't get wet because of its shape. With the elegant streamline, it looks like a "shield". It can be folded as a plate and then put in bag. It is when a creative structure, an ingenious imagination, and some modifications are all brought together that Rain Shield is born, giving new life to the ordinary rainy days.
Designed by Min-Wei, Lin & Li-Hsiang Liu. Date: 2012

Observation. The ordinary umbrella has been existed for hundreds of years, with delicate and complicated structure. The rid of umbrellas is the heaviest part of the hole thing, but also the part that most easily gets damages. It has been so many kinds of choices that fit different needs, like sizes, special purposes and so on. But there are still many problems unresolved and inconvenience. We want to redesign the existing umbrella structure with new thinking, replace the rid with new materials and improve the usability of umbrells. ─ Complicated structure and it's easily get damage. ─ Unable to against winds and rains from the side. ─ The edges stab people.
Research & Investigations. Using the keywords "umbrella" to know more about the existing products. Instead of the general umbrella, we search for the creative and special ideas, and get inspirations from the interesting information. ─ The innovative shape and different length of rids can avoid the damages from strogn winds. ─ No fabrics covered just rids. People could use newspapers or plastic bags to set up this environmental-friendly umbrella. ─ To put away the all-wet fabric by turning the cloth inside out. ─ A case which is attached on the handle bar can store your umbrella, and it will never get lost.
Using "folding", "collapsible" as keywords to find some references to structures and materials.
01. Sunshade board in cars 02. Camping tent 03. Mosquito net 04. Laundry basket
16
Structure & Materials. In the process we try many kinds of materials like steel wire, carbon strips, and make experiments on the sizes, diameters and lengths.
The main structure has to be flexible and tough. To compare carbon strips with steel wire, carbon is tough and light but easily broken, and steel wire has great flexibility and it's strong enough. We choice steel wire as the final structures and materials.
Design goal. We would like to improve the umbrella nowadays by using the steel wire as the material and providing facility with new structure. Following are the five directions:
New style
Safety
Function
Strength
Lightness
18
Prototyping. Testing prototype 1st. It is formed by three circles, after overlap the three circles can twist them into a small plate. The way to twist it is just like the sunshade board. Although the coverage is pretty much but the structure is quite weak.
Testing prototype 2nd. Applying the flexible steel wire to fold up a threedimensional structure. And putting on a handle bar.
This prototype is very close to the final product.
20
Final Structure. Using a 520cm long steel wire to make a big circle, then fold it into three smaller circles, and fasten three joints to finish the whole structure. The three joints will limit the steel wire so that it can't flip back to the flat plane and still stay like a three-dimensional structure.
Models & Parts. Materials using for final model are: - Waterproof fabrics - Flexible steel wire - Aluminum and ABS as handle bar - Adjustable stainless steel pole.
22
Details. The aerodynamic shape that keeps rain off one's back looks like a shield in the rain. Shorten the length of main pole, swirl the surface to the center, and fold it into a pad.
The handle combines the characteristics of plastic and metal, featuring the coolness of metal while retaining good grip strength. The Logo resembles the shape of handle section as well as the top view of the umbrella. Take waterproof cloth as the surface so it won't get wet. The wires held together in thermoplastic tubes are connected by elastic strings, giving the structure a wide turning range.

- Ride in rains with ease and comfort.
Rain Shield has cooperation with a Netherlands bike brand since 2014. In order to enhance the city cycling, we want to apply a rain shield on bikes to keep the important part of the body dry while cycling in the rain at the same time still having a comfortable and safe riding. A project is based on our graduation work. Designed by Min-Wei, Lin & Shane Liu. Date: 2014 to 2015

POS. Many people rides bicycle in their daily lives. However, it doesn’t feel good to ride in a rainy day because it’s wet and windy. We hope to design a product that helps people to ride in the rain with comfort and protection. It is a product that blocks out rain and wind. With the structure, it provides strength and flexibility. Different from others, it’s designed for bicycle to ride in the rain. The opening and closing of the product should be fast and easy. When closed, it’s small enough to be stored in the front carrier. The product should be simple and look great while people ride on the street.
Observation.
with no protection ─ Free to ride and control, but no protection.
with an umbrella ─ Only one hand to control and it’s hard to against the wind.
with a raincoat ─ The material is not breathable, you still feel the water is close to the body.
with a helmet ─ Still get wet except the head. Too big in storage.
with a shelter ─ Prevent well, but the storage is a big trouble.
with an umbrella fitted ─ Less structure but more parts may get wet. No wind protection.
28
We notice that when people riding there are some parts of body we don't want to get wet, and here is the ranking of those regions. And B part are the most important part, people hope their hair can stay dry after riding. Most of the product cannot protect the C part from getting wet, but it always annoy people if your shoes and knees are wet. We hope can make the coverage bigger enough to protect the knees and legs.

Red means it is not well, yellow means it is acceptable, green means it is excellent.
We have discussed and scored for the existing product on their advantage and disadvantage. There are four items we care about: protection, comfort, operation, and storage. Protection is talking about how this product can supply you with sheltering rain; comfort means the way of riding is free or not, the dressing product should not make people feel like dripping wet; operation refers to the usage of the product, is it easy to open, should people take one hand to hold it; storage is about how you put away the product after rain.
Concept 1. This concept is based on our graduation work, set up Rain Shield on the front basket, and you have to separate the shield and the pole when storage.
Well protection Flexible against wind Ride comfortably Can be stored in a small size Operate quickly
Concept 2. The idea is to provide a light and portable board to protect from the wind and rain. People can open it up quickly, and it can be folded into a very small piece.

Concept 3.
Well protection
This concept is inspired by the poncho, put the steel wire and poncho together and make some structure, so that people won’t feel the wet fabrics stick on their skin.
Ride comfortably
Flexible against wind
Can be stored in a small size Operate quickly
Concept 4. We have made some change on the steel wire structure: add one more joint in the front in order to strengthen the arc of the shield, so it won’t be blown up when it comes a fierce wind.
The prototype is made of plastic bags and tape, it is speedy than making by needlework and the effect still looks good even better.
Well protection Flexible against wind Ride comfortably Can be stored in a small size Operate quickly
Here is the three-dimensional view for the steel wire, and the details of the prototype.
33
Storage. In order to store the shield we made an exclusive front basket for VANMOOF bikes. The shape grounds on the original VANMOOF waitress, and combine a half round in the front. The round edge could be an extension of the fabrics, making bigger coverage, and the shield will always attached on the bike, whenever it rains you can put on the shield right away. The shield could be the lid of the basket after folding.
This is another idea of storage. Because we noticed that the bike accessories are usually set vertically not horizontally on the bikes. If the shield is stored as a lid of the basket, it will be too wide and looks bulky. So we made a round-shaped bag that can be attached on the back carrier.
The whole project is still runnig ......

Nobody sees me - Do whatever you want behind me. It is a kind of embarrassed and sometimes impolite to make up in public, but female will have to do it on rare occasions. The idea is to combine the fan and the mirror. As the function of the fan you can stay behind it and to the make up with the attached little mirror, and after using it can be folded into a small piece that is easy to bring with.
Designed by Min-Wei, Lin. Date: 2014
38
Design Background. Girls who do their make up in public feel embarrassed and others sight…… Just finishing a bid meal but feeling that there is somethings getting stuck in teeth……
Materials. Flexible steel wire Pro p e r t i e s o f f l ex i b l e ste e l w i re i s collapsible and the elasticity. By putting on fabrics to make a surface, and it can still be bend into a smaller scale. The material is now applying on many product such like sunshade boards, camping tents, mosquito tents and so on.
40
Concept. Collapsible fan + little mirror Making a cover for others sight in the public and you can do whatever you want behind it, cleaning teeth, up on lip stick‌‌ When it is folded, the mirror will be clad in the fan as a protection, and it is small enough to store in your bag.
21 cm
Details. It looks just like a fan in the front, and the mirror is attached in the back side. The usage is quite easy: bend the fan and the elasticity of steel will be an assistance of folding. The scale will become one third of the original fan after folded.

Open Convection System v1.0 - An indoor air circulate system. With observation and user interview, we found out the key to the comfort of feels-like temperature is the well airiness. The idea is to create a system in order to build up a cozy space with nice temperature. The system contains a camera which is attached on the ceiling, and it can take the real-time shoots of the room; fan that can move around by itself, and it has temperature sensor on it, connected to the camera, by identifying positions of people, furniture, doors and windows, it will move to the most appropriate position and make flow. You can also add more fan or air conditioner into the system, to create an efficient indoor air circulation. Team worked by Min-Wei Lin, product design and prototyping. Hao-Xiang Lin, UI and graphic design, prototyping. Wei-Tse Lee, programing and prototyping. Ming-Hsuan Hsieh, machinery and prototyping. Date: 2014

Observation & Interview. Key points of comfort: Temperature controlling & Airiness. It is better to make things intelligence because people are lazy to operate machines. - Can control the sway of fan freely - Turn on and off automatically - Follow people by self-motion - Make efficient air flow
Competitors.
- VORNADO air circulator
- Dyson air multiplier
Using signature energy efficient Vortex Action to move air up to 65 feet, providing whole room air circulation. Its compact size makes it ideal for use in an office, dorm room, or cubical.
It doesn't have any rotating blades inside it. Air flows along the inside of the device until it reaches a slit inside the tube. This provides the basic airflow that creates the breeze you'd feel if you stood in front of the fan.
- Twingo-one As theorem of hurricanes, it makes air circulation. It will provide cyclone when it is spaced in a corner and cause the air flow in the room with time.
- Chi Mei D.C. fan Available with a 7-speed control and multi-sway. Power save and mute. Adjusts wind rate with microcomputer and sensor.
- nest Neat is an IOT thing in home that can change temperature for you, without any buttons, intelligence and it’s easy to set up and operate. It learns your schedule, programs itself and can be controlled from your phone.
48
Design Theme. Due to the observation and our team discussion, following are the design theme we would like to do: Identifying people + Winds controlling
Make air flow string along people Sensing temperature + making air convection
Notice temperature difference then do the convection
Open system API. Camera + System Air conditioning + Fan + Ventilator The whole system will be an opening application program interface that is not only one device in it but can also add more than one fan, air conditioning and other exhaust fans. A space with a system and will be monitored by a camera.
System flow. The camera can take down the real-time shoots of the room, notice that if there is someone in, and notify the fan to do appropriate movement.
Sketches.
Final Product. A periscopic camera which is fixed on the ceiling and it can take down the real-time shoots of the room. Check out the devices you have in the system (room) and operate them right on the pad. The window in the left is the top view of your room. The fan can move around by rolling like a wheel, when the two wheels go to reversely direction it makes a turn, and it can sway by the off-axis motor structure A temperature sensor is set on the fan, which can detect temperature difference in the space then turn on the convection mode.
Functional Prototype. We set up a small room in contraction scale to show the function. A web cam is hanged on a foot stool as the camera on the ceiling, and it will take photo of the room every second to detect if there is people (we put a figure into the room). All the signal will be sent to the computer then command the fan through Arduino.

Smeller - A personal allergen detector.
People who has allergy will be more careful with the meal components when going out eating. But it is still possible to eat the food that will cause an allergic reaction. This small device applies with a high-tech electronic nose chip, which can memorize your allergen and remind you not to eat it. It is very speedy and easy to use. The modeling looks like a spoon that is conform to the scenario of meal times.
Designed by Min-Wei, Lin & Li-Hsiang Liu. Date: 2014
54
Design Background. People who has allergy will be more careful with the meal components when going out eating. How do we know what are we eating? There are many ways to detect the component of food but they have to tough the food directly and take times to analyze. Can we just smell like a dog? To know what food are you eating by smelling it?
Technology. An electronic nose is a device intended to detect and recognize odors or flavors. The expression "electronic sensing" refers to the capability of reproducing human senses using sensor arrays and pattern recognition systems. The stages of the recognition process are similar to human olfaction and are performed for identification, comparison, quantification and other applications, including data storage and retrieval.

Sketches.
Details & Function. Smeller with an e-nose chip that notes down your allergens, detect odors and recognize you if you shouldn’t eat the food. Finally you can go to and eat freely and easily.
A Smeller can memorize 6 kinds of allergens and it can recognize the food quickly through flavors. If there is allergen in the dishes, the reminding LED will light up as a warning.
58
Smeller is a hexagon in cross-section so it has 6 options on the knob. The chip and sensor are placed in the swelling of the spoon, and flavors can go through the spiracle. If it senses there is allergen, the reminding LED will light up red as a warning. And it will light on green if the food is ok. Remove the cap is a recharge pin.

PICK STAND - Get all your picks gather together. To brainstorming with the waste wooden materials, recycling the round-shaped wood chips, turn it into a funny plaything: a frame that can collect picks for players.
Designed by Min-Wei, Lin Date: 2013
62
From left to right : Rosewood, Mahogany, Spruce plywood, Spruce.
Design Background. The waste material from the manufacturing process of guitars is split up for fuel in the past. Those woods are still nice and it is a pity to burn them up. I would like to recycle these small wooden pieces and do somethings with them.
Observation. People can use their fingers to play guitars or use picks. There are many sizes and different thickness for picks, and one player may have tens of thousands of picks. It is like the lighter for smoking people, they hope can get a lighter on the moment they want smoking, but the lighter is too small that people often miss it, and it is consumable. Players always put picks everywhere but couldn't find one when they really need it.
64
Concept. A small frame which can gather your picks together and the simple holder makes the frame standing on the plane. Bigger size so you won’t miss it, a frame can collect 10 picks at least.
A wooden chip makes one frame and it needs 6 part to finish it. Set up all the parts with white glue.
Final Product.
