Martinez Upgrade Unveiled Improved complex ‘a real magnet’ for student sports

Last Thursday, the lobby of the Martinez Athletics Center was packed during its re-dedication ceremony to former University of Tampa student and Florida governor Bob Martinez.

The enhanced structure remains the home of the athletic facilities and also the new Health Sciences and Human Performance building. The building was originally named after Martinez in 1987 when he was the sitting governor of Florida, but there was no formal dedication. This time, the event was well attended with such notable people as Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn and UT President Ronald Vaughn.

“This dedication today is a reflection of this governor’s commitment to this community,” Buckhorn said. “His quiet, unassuming, humble way that he has changed this city in ways that we can’t even imagine.”

Aside from being an active UT supporter, Martinez was also previously inducted into the UT Athletic Hall of Fame and was honored as a UT Alumnus of the Year.

SP Keeps Programming with Dean as Temporary Adviser

Student Productions is searching for a new adviser after former adviser Jennifer Powell resigned from the University of Tampa.

Powell, former coordinator of student events, left after the RNC’s end to move back home to Indiana and begin a new job at Valparaiso University where she is now the assistant director of the Student Union.

While at UT, Powell worked as the adviser for SP, a position now left empty.

As adviser, Powell signed all contracts for SP, oversaw operations and educated on university policy.

“We work relatively independently though, Jenn would make sure that we weren’t missing anything but she left most of the decisions up to us,” said SP President Ryan Day. Powell announced her resignation to

Powell’s departure has changed Day’s day to day operations with SP. He now regularly meets with board members concerning upcoming events, which Day said has made him “a lot more detailed oriented so as not to miss anything.”

“Immediately after Jenn left it was definitely strange getting used to but she trained us really well to work on our own,” said Day. With Powell gone, Stephanie Russell Krebs, dean of students, acts as SP’s temporary adviser. As the temporary advisor Krebs meets weekly with members of various organization’s boards including the Student Productions president, homecoming chair and concert chair.

Local professional teams and equipment manufacturers have already started expressing interest in the use of these new facilities for research and evaluation.

Bob Martinez was very thankful for the rededication. But he also reminded everyone why this building was renovated.

“I want to thank everyone for being here today, I really appreciate it,” he said. “But most important is the students and athletes that will appreciate this building, much more than I will. It’s for them it was done. They’re the ones that are going to use it and we’re going to watch them win more titles,” he said.

The ceremony ended with the presentation of a plaque for Martinez and his wife, Mary Jane, to show the university’s appreciation for everything they have done for UT. A ribbon-cutting followed and the building was officially open.

Larry Marfise, director of athletics, thinks the complex will build a sense of pride for students and athletes. “The minute you walk through the doors of this facility, you get the impression that the University of Tampa cares about its students, and how hard they work on and off the field, and that’s what we want out of the students,” he said. “We want them to come here and feel a sense of pride as soon as they hit the front doors of this facility.”

“It allows us to highlight our past and our present, but also allows us to host our future, and that’s what higher education is,” Marfise added.

The University has nearly 7,000 students this year-A new record. So it was crucial to expand the space provided for majors such as allied health, nursing and athletic training.

Senior Grace Jungclas, president of the Athletic Training Student Organization, is excited for what the new facilities have to offer. “I’m really excited about it, I feel like the quality of our education has increased just by the new equipment,” she said.

“That’s really expanded our opportunities.”

Another thing that has expanded are the sports teams on campus. They will be using the new space and equipment.

“The athletic facilities have really expanded; there’s a lot less confusion,” Jungclas said. “We have more space for all our incoming athletes, such as the lacrosse team.

We’re expecting women’s lacrosse next fall too. The athletic training room can actually hold a lot more athletes. We can do a lot more treatments and it’s just much more efficient.”

Student, Faculty Parking Causes Frustration Across Campus

It’s common to hear conversations around the University of Tampa campus revolving around homework, going out and the temperamental weather. However, the most common conversation nowadays is the issue of parking, even though the parking consensus shows enough spots for all registered students. There are new parking plans in the works, but many students still feel there is not enough spots to accommodate the number of students on campus that have a car, especially the commuters.

Jessie Bergman, a senior music performance major, thinks that the lack of parking for commuter students is a problem. “I don’t have class until noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I can barely find parking on the sixth floor of West garage.”

According to Linda Devine, VP of Operations and Planning, the freshman class is usually the one that brings the fewest cars to campus. The ones living in the Howard Johnson can use the hotel lot, but freshmen are also allowed to use West Parking Garage.

However, with the amount of students using the garages, it is interfering with schedules.

“Almost every time I come to class at 10 a.m. I am late because of the congestion in the garage, and people stopping so frequently to stalk people to their cars,” Bergman said.

There have been several complaints this fall regarding the lack of parking, but according to collected

Krebs acts as temporary adviser From SP, Page 1

to meet with the other members of SP on an additional needed basis.”

Though the appointment of the position was sudden, Krebs says that it has not been a burden to her.

“I have really enjoyed serving as the temporary adviser. When I came to UT 14 years ago I was hired to work with student productions and advised them for 5 years. This particular group of students in SP is very high functioning.

They are terrific campus programmers and are a joy to work with.”

Krebs also had high praise for the Student Productions president, Ryan Day, and the other members of SP. “Ryan Day, the SP president is an amazing student leader. During this

time of transition he has provided wonderful continuity for the group,” Krebs said. “I love every minute of working with SP.” Krebs will also be an integral part of the search to find the new Student Productions adviser. Krebs will hold campus interviews with all the final candidates and will return feedback to the search committee, which is made up of faculty, staff and students. In addition to the interview, candidates will be a part of a public presentation that students are encouraged to attend.

“During their interview days all the candidates will meet with a variety of campus stakeholders (faculty, staff and students) even though they are not on the search committee.” Krebs says that there isn’t a singular person in mind for the position yet, but she does have certain qualities, which the candidate must have.

“I am always looking for new student affairs staff members who are student-centered,” she said “Professionals that love to empower students to reach their full potential and staff who value diversity and inclusion that will serve as positive role models for students would add value to the UT community.”

Internship Fairs Beneficial for Students

With internship and career fairs coming up next month, the University of Tampa’s career service department conducted an interactive workshop Wednesday to provide students with job-seeking advice.

The workshop, “Making the Most of a Career Fair,” was presented by Casey Hewins, a representative from Northwestern Mutual Finance Network - an employer that participates in the job and internship fairs at UT. The company actively seeks “independent young driven students,” Hewins said. She explained it is important to remember networking is crucial for young students seeking opportunity in the working world because “80 percent of all jobs are found through networking.”

“I love when people take my business card off the table before I even offer it to them,” Hewins stated. “Because of networking, if I meet a candidate who is not right for the position I have, but I like that person, I’ve seen their resume and they are interacting with me – chances are likely I may know of a recruiter who would be perfect and point out a position for that person.”

Hewins also explained there are many other aspects that a student must consider

major, current activities and any additional strengths.

“Tie in things you’re active in and passionate about,” Hewins suggested.

“Know what makes you stand out from other candidates.”

It is also important to prepare a resume and get critiques, she said.

“The University of Tampa career services is phenomenal for this,” Hewins said. “They will sit down with you and go over your resume word-for-word, making sure you sound as articulate as you want to be.”

Another crucial aspect of a job fair is “dressing to impress,” stressed Hewins.

“It’s important to remember it’s not a day at the beach, but not an award show either,” she said, “but it’s definitely better to overdress than underdress.”

And for those who feel that they are too young to pursue an internship, think again.

“I think the earlier you go to practice, the better,” stated Sheila Hood, associate director of career services. “If you start looking as a freshman or sophomore, by the time you’re a junior or senior and you are really crunching for an internships, you’ve made your mistakes already and the butterflies you get at job fairs have gone away.”

Marco Tarantino, new president wants to expand membership of the club

Marco Tarantino is the new president of the University of Tampa’s College Conservatives. He started his position as president this semester, taking over from Boston Ross, who graduated last spring.

This semester the club increased in numbers “from only four to five members last year to about 25,� said Tarantino, a junior. “Elections are always a bigger turnout for people.�

The goal of the club, as stated by Tarantino, is to unite people and foster conservative values and ideals. The club meets on Thursdays and they discuss upcoming events along with socials where they go out to eat and talk about Republican ideals. “Even though we are the College Conservatives we do a

The club would have to go through a process of being federated in order to be considered a College Republican Club. “If we become a College Republican Club then we can’t get help from nonprofit or non-affiliation groups,� said Tarantino.

Tarantino discussed several events the club has done this semester, including a voter registration drive.

In the last three weeks, they have registered around 200 Republicans and independent voters, Tarantino said.

Members went to a Paul Ryan rally in Oldsmar on Sept. 15 and were caught on camera of a local news station as they stood right behind the vice presidential nominee during his speech.

When John McCain visited UT on Sept. 18, Tarantino was able to attend, while the club as a whole could not. “He is a very eloquent speaker,� he commented. “He was actually very funny. I didn’t expect that from him.�

The club also participated in phone banking on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Victory Office in South Tampa, calling people and telling them to “go out and vote.� According to Tarantino, they mainly “tell people who are independent why they should vote for Mitt Romney and why they shouldn’t vote for Obama.�

Republican. In two hours last weekend, Tarantino hit about 50 houses in the Temple Terrace area.“We get good responses,� he said. “You get to go face to face with the voter. See the people, where they live, what they’re like. It’s a little more personal than just calling them on the phone.�

In addition to being president of the College Conservatives, Tarantino has been active with local politics. He is currently working in a campaign for E.J. Otero, who is running for Congress in Florida’s 14th District as a Republican against incumbent Kathy Castor.

He has been helping Otero for the past eight to nine months. “A lot of the political stuff I learned, I learned from his campaign,� he said.

Back on campus, Tarantino’s hope for the club this year is to build its numbers. “Get the word out,� he said. “Be consistent. It’s hard to figure out what to do to keep people in the club. This is a problem with a lot of these political organizations. People usually jump on the bandwagon at the last moment of elections. You have to be creative. We want people to keep coming back.�

Tarantino plans to do this by bringing in guest speakers, such as state Rep. Rich Glorioso from Brandon, and helping with interest groups such as the NRA. Paola Crespo can be reached at Paola.

Vintage Essence Comes Alive at Oxford Exchange

Walking into Oxford Exchange, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Located in the old building on Kennedy Blvd. across from the University of Tampa campus and to the left of Falk Theatre, Oxford Exchange is an eclectic fusion of multiple businesses. It is a book store, Buddy Brew Coffee, TeBella Tea Company, restaurant, antique home décor shop and private office suites all in one space.

This isn’t a usual combination, but it somehow works. I entered the antique shop first to find many new and curious customers browsing the merchandise.

I was quickly greeted by an employee, UT junior and international business and finance major Iram Cesani.

Cesani described the building as a “high profile investment company that is a community within a community, bringing the artsy community to Tampa.”

The building itself is 100 years old, and the owners decided to keep the original architecture to give Oxford Exchange an aged feel. During the renovation process, they hired Aesthetic Movement, a design company based in New York, to complete

the transformation.

Past the antique furniture shop is TeBella Tea Company. Here, individuals can order traditional iced and hot teas as well as salted caramel lattés and strawberry mint juleps.

According to Cesani, TeBella hosts tea parties every day from three to five p.m.

These tea parties mostly cater to wealthier retirees looking for a relaxing way to spend an afternoon with friends and loved ones. Indoor seating surrounds TeBella, but there is outdoor seating as well.

Just beyond TeBella is Buddy Brew Coffee. They have a menu similar to Starbucks in both price and variety. Buddy Brew serves traditional coffees, lattés and espressos, but they also offer Italian sodas, sparkling water and some baked goods.

Oxford Exchange hopes to be a big draw for UT students, especially since its store hours open at 6:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, before some of the on-campus dining options open. It is definitely a great option for breakfast and coffee before early morning classes. Oxford Exchange closes at 5:30 p.m. during the weekdays, which is later than the Rathskeller.

The bookstore is located in the very back of the building. The shelves are

filled with a wide variety of books including: the classics like “Animal Farm” and “The Odyssey” and more recent novels like “The Help.” There are many unique collectable items like typewriters placed in the center of the reading tables. It is this attention to the detail scattered around the space that seems quirky yet comforting. Every nook and cranny contains different pieces of artwork and furniture, giving it the feel of someone’s personal urban loft.

Despite the distinct and unusual blend of these different types of businesses, they all seem to go hand-in-hand. Customers can order coffee or tea and browse books and furniture as they slowly sip their beverages. Whether retirees or college students visit, it’s the perfect spot for people to unwind from their everyday lives and enjoy the vintage revival.

Florence and the Machine Lights Up USF Sun Dome

Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine revealed her inner goddess during her show in Tampa last week.

Music came thundering out of bull country’s Sun Dome in Tampa last week. The electrifying music came from none other than the one-and-only, incandescent Florence + The Machine. Paired along with the British phenomenon was the south London indie rock band known as the Maccabees, who are somewhat similar to We the Kings and Secondhand Serenade.

This was the ninth stop on Florence’s second leg of visiting North America for their two-year tour. Florence + The Machine are out promoting their newest album, Ceremonials, which released Oct. 28, 2011. Ceremonials is the album that Florence proclaims is the “epitome of where I am in my life right now.”

Anyone that enjoys her heavenly, melodic song stylings knows she has a majestic voice that has the raw power to challenge legends like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Adele.

Her performance on Tuesday night was just as awe-inspiring. I had the distinct pleasure of standing in the front row of the floor section along with 200 other Florence fans while she eccentrically twirled around the stage like a black swan ballerina.

I was worried about the quality of her live voice not meeting up to par with the album recordings, however, all my worries were squashed when her voice bounced along with the acoustics of the Dome. She dazzled us with a set list that included but was not limited to: “Only If For a Night,” “What the Water Gave Me,” “Cosmic Love,” “Shake It Out” and she closed with the grand “Dog Days Are Over.”

Florence’s live performance matched her powerhouse pipes portrayed on the albums perfectly. It was actually even better. At times the strength that came out of her vocal chords felt so moving; any music lover would have had all sorts of emotions running through their bodies. My roommate and I were so enthralled by the performance that when Florence sang

“Raise It Up,” I placed my roommate on my shoulders upon Florence’s request for everyone to lift a loved one above the crowd.

The accompanying lights slowly raised toward the ceiling as if giving the audience a guide to follow as they lift someone up. Also, the lighting was fantastic in itself throughout the entire show. Florence looked like she was some sort of goddess with the spotlights shining from above down to her. It was almost like her voice was an omnipresent being.

Florence + The Machine’s performance was definitely something I will remember for a very long time. A member of the crowd that stood next to me mentioned that she had seen Florence + The Machine in concert three previous times and this was their best show out of all the others. Even though it was my first Florence concert, it was still particularly memorable, especially the finale.

She has a “ritual” to end every concert by making the crowd jump on the count of three until every single person is jumping together.

This prefaced “Dogs Days Are Over,” and we continued to jump throughout the entire song.

The energy in the joint was buzzing around like a bunch of molecules bouncing around in space. The audience practically worshipped Florence’s ethereal voice. The whole show honestly centered around Florence, making her seem like an angel. And I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Kendrick Lamar Leaves Fans Begging for More

The bass thumped, the crowd roared and the words flowed like the Hillsborough River. By the time headliner Kendrick Lamar had taken the stage at around 10:30 p.m. last Wednesday, the crowd had already been treated to a superb show by the opening acts, which included Fly Union, Jay Rock, Stalley and Ab Soul. Then Kendrick, whom Dr. Dre has labeled as his protégé, came out, causing the crowd to roar to a recordsetting decibel level.

He started off with “HiiiPower,” which is well-known with Lamar fans, as it details Lamar’s self-proclaimed religion and his base connections with the legendary Tupac Shakur with the customary loud bass that had ruled the concert thus far. Then it was onto “F-- Your Ethnicity,” in which he preached to the crowd about the importance of ignoring each other’s color and race.

“Hol Up” and “ADHD” followed, and the crowd began to sing along with Kendrick. By the time “ADHD” and its drug-infused lyrics had ended, the crowd had nailed the last set of lyrics.

Then a slight disturbance with the sound took place, but it was no problem for Kendrick, as he just busted into some freestyle, which really riled everyone up. When the music and DJ were back on track, Lamar went on without a hitch,

flowing right into “Ronald Reagan Era,” which continued the theme of kids abusing drugs during the 80s. He then followed up with “The Spiteful Chant.” It really upped the bass even louder. The floor of the Ritz shook as everyone jumped and pumped their fists to the beat.

“Tammy’s Song” was up next, and as one of Lamar’s best flows, it met my standards. It detailed two women who cheat on their boyfriends because they were unfaithful. Kendrick performed “Michael Jordan” next as he continued to talk about his HiiiPower movement as well as his background growing up in the rough streets of Compton in Los Angeles. Then came “Rigamortus,” one of Lamar’s best-known songs. By this time, the crowd knew every word before Kendrick uttered it, often a couple of words ahead of him.

Lamar closed with his most popular songs. “The Recipe,” which features Lamar’s mentor, Dr. Dre, nearly blew the roof off the Ritz. The bass and crowd practically drowned out his performance.

But Lamar killed it even without Dr. Dre there next to him, easily flowing into Dre’s verses like he was meant to rap this song alone. Then came “Swimming Pools.” The audience refrained from saying the chorus repeatedly: “N---, why you babysittin’ only two or three shots?/I’ma show you how to turn it up a notch/first you get a swimming pool full of liquor/then you dive in it/pool full of

liquor/then you dive in.”

As Kendrick walked off the stage, the audience begged for more. He of course obliged it, running back onto the stage for “Cartoons and Cereal,” his latest hit and final encore. The crowd roared once more, more audible over the subdued yet still ever present bass.

Kendrick then saluted the wild fans, threw out a pair of autographed Beats headphones to a fan in the front and exited the stage. The lights came back on in the packed Ritz, and an announcer said, “You ain’t gotta go home, but you gotta get the hell out of here.” What an apt ending to a night filled with nothing but bass. Kendrick himself couldn’t have said it any better.

Over the past decade, Muse has emerged as one of Britain’s biggest musical exports.

2006 saw the release of Black Holes and Revelations, a cutting edge progressive rock album of the highest. Not only did it cement them as one of rock’s most ambitious acts but it helped them crack the tricky North American market. During that time, their sound has been expanding

at the same rate as the universe itself, and their sixth studio album, The 2nd Law, is unquestionably no exception.

With The 2nd Law, the blistering choruses and operatic bravado still remain, but this time around Muse tries their hand at the latest musical buzz genre dubstep.

Although, this is by no means a dubstep record. In fact, just defining what type of album The 2nd Law is, is like trying to eat soup with a fork: you just can’t do it. It’s a pop album, but it’s also a progressiverock album. It’s an alternative album, but it’s also an EDM/Dance album. It turns out that the only real way to classify “The 2nd Law” is as a collection of songs––a collection that divvies into a smorgasbord of musical influences.

This diverse and at times bizarre assortment opens with the tune “Supremacy” which, with its multilayered orchestral tones and big guitars, sounds tailor-made to be the next James Bond theme. Track two takes a drastic genre shift with the song “Madness,” a stripped down electro-bass line pop song.

The musical rollercoaster continues with “Panic Station,” a funky track that is nothing short of being offspring of the Scissor Sisters and Queen. The prominent influence of Queen can be heard throughout The 2nd Law, most notably on the track “Survival,” an over-the-top epic that has the feel of “Bohemian Rhapsody” on speed.

Track five finds the British trio trying their hand at dance pop with “Follow Me,” a Rihanna-influenced dance floor anthem. And then there’s “The Second Law: Unsustainable” and “The Second Law: Isolated System.” This is where dubstep makes its unwelcome appearance.

“Unsustainable,” an obvious nod to Skrillex and “Isolated System” with a shout out to Deadmou5, sounds painfully contrived and only adds to the album’s

already insurmountable lack of cohesion.

Don’t get me wrong, The 2nd Law is still a hugely entertaining album that fits snuggly into Muse’s eclectic catalogue, but the album comes with flaws. It’s obvious Muse was trying to step out of their shadow with this latest anthology.

During an interview with Q magazine, bassist Chris Wolstenholme stated, “It’s time to move on and do something radically different.”

Radical would be putting it lightly.

Matt and Kim Get Loud With Album ‘Lightning’

Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino. This keyboardist and drummer duo make up indie band Matt & Kim, and their newest creation, Lightning dropped on Oct. 2. Past albums Grand and Sidewalks impressed critics and garnered fans with their raw style, lyrics and sound. Sidewalks grew from Grand’s happygo-lucky sound (like with “Daylight”) by incorporating different beats and a heavier feel (like with “Ice Melts”).

Lightning is neither of these experiences.

It is cardiac arrest. Noisier than past albums, there is a constant barrage of sound that skates around being too busy to being just the right amount of pep. Keeping with Matt & Kim’s fast-paced repertoire, there is barely a breather in any of the beginning tracks aside from some creative tempo change.

“Let’s Go” kicks off Lightning in typical Matt & Kim fashion with a sick beat and lyrics that speak to the present moment, throwing caution to the wind and living youthfully. “Say what you want to want to say/make it mean everything” runs through the song and sets up the album’s overarching tone which alternates between life coach and drill sergeant.

The more experimental “Now” plays with dubstep and drops that would make even the most narcissistic DJs a little selfconscious. Lyrics like “We will all ride this thing down,” “I know things aren’t perfect” and “sometimes truth sounds just like lies” culminate the feeling of an older sibling relaying advice.

“It’s All Right” slows for a moment of continuing paternal reassurance before propelling into “Not That Bad” which emphasizes calm in the face of adversity.

The 2nd Law is radical to the point of This track uses a lot of the traditional Grandintolerance. It’s also difficult to pinpoint esque piano and trumpets that seems to be what exactly Muse was trying to express missing from previous tracks, light enough here. To be just radically different is smug and illegitimate. In other words, it’s bombast for bombast’s sake. It’s almost like they did it for the hell of it, just to say that they could. That’s not genuine and lacks heart.

The inability to inject humanity into their music is a problem that has plagued Muse throughout their career. They have a masterful and technical ability and the aptitude to write some of the world’s most complex music. The 2nd Law only reiterates this, but as complex as it may be, it still feels like it was written by a supercomputer. I guess with an album title alluding to Newton’s second law of thermodynamics, I should have known what I was getting myself into.

If The 2nd Law was judged on technical merit and originality of each song individually, it would pass with flying colors. But if judged as a cognitive whole and taking into consideration emotional impact and authenticity, it would be a failed experiment. It is really up to the listener. If you like your music to have some feeling to it and a general sense of coherence then The 2nd Law isn’t for you, but if you want to hear something that could’ve been written by Hal 9000, to give the listener a much needed break. then you’ve found your holy grail.

It does more for me than the beginning of the album because it sincerely is trying at something new without cramming too much into one song. The repetition of lyrics beats you over the head so that you can only nod along and chant ritualistically.

Critic’s Rating: In fact, “I Said” seems to be the fulcrum 2.5 out of 5 stars of the album, separating out the rush of the

beginning from the more controlled second half. “Tonight” still features sirens leading into bitching drops and builds but doesn’t lose itself in cacophony. Instead, it builds naturally into its chorus.

My absolute favorite beat of the whole album occurs in “I Wonder,” which is completely unique yet so in alignment with the maturity I’d expect from a fourth album.

Even the lyrics take a different direction from the rest of Lightning, becoming more introspective and even aggressive (heard mostly in “Much Too Late”).

Once “Ten Dollars I Found” wraps up Lightning, there are many conclusions you could draw from the past half hour or so of music with the first being that this album is hopelessly optimistic. It gives you a violent hug at every turn to reassure you that no matter what precipice you face, Matt & Kim will catch you before you spiral down.

As much as I appreciate Matt & Kim’s consistency and the progression of their sound, I felt nostalgic for previous albums where I didn’t feel as hurried along from track to track. The hyperactivity of the beginning wears you out, but thankfully it is redeemed by a cool down (or at least Matt & Kim’s interpretation of one) during the second half. “Ten Dollars I Found” is an elegant close, a much needed piano ballad with lovely simplicity after the intensity of the tracks that came before.

A line from the very first track, “Let’s Go,” seems to sum up Lightning perfectly: “All these words/I don’t need them now.” It’s true. Matt & Kim have transcended words and melodies and brought us to a whole new realm where urban pop, hip-hop and indie rock can all orgy to make your ear holes happy. It’s a fantastic ride, though rushed at times, but still staying true to classic Matt & Kim. Matt and Kim will be stopping by the lightning capital of the world with Lightning;

Bilour’s bounty announcement deserved more decisive action from the Pakistan government. By not handing down punishment to Bilour, they are fundamentally advocating the price he has put on Nakoula’s head. In my opinion, the government made a public statement simply to save face. Their denunciation was minimal at best, and the Foreign Office didn’t even give their stance on the bounty; they only said that the offer was Bilour’s personal statement and not representative of the feelings of the government.

Although Bilour’s motivation is unclear, he owes more to the people whom he represents as a public official. His statement, whether or not he was making a political move, was selfish and stupid.

A government leader should realize that there are proper channels to go through to bring Nakoula to justice--this isn’t the Old West where gunslingers are free to fire off their six-shooters. Pakistan is considered a developed nation. I believe that they should take more pride in themselves than allowing their officials to speak off the cuff about an anti-Islamic filmmaker or anyone whose opinion may conflict with their own personal beliefs. at

Protests Rise in Spain As Economy Collapses, Impacting Many Countries

The economy in Europe has not been stable since the 2008 stock market crash.

Eurozone, the economic union in which its members use the Euro as its sole currency, has been losing control of their debt.

This has caused concerns of bankruptcy and countries defaulting (failing to pay financial obligation) on their debt. One member of Eurozone, Spain, has been on close watch. Spain has become the newest victim of towering bankruptcy and possibility of default. Their economic instability is starting to make investors and the rest of Europe concerned of what will become of the country’s economy.

According to the Associated Press, protests broke out in Madrid on Sept.

25 outside the Spanish Parliament concerning the economic state, the 25 percent unemployment rate and the fear of an austerity budget (a policy to reduce the deficit by cutting public services and benefits). The protesters amounted to hundreds, resulting in 38 arrests and 64 injuries.

BBC reported that Spain has released their budget plans for 2013. The plan includes cuts in ministerial spending, independent authorities monitoring government finances, increases in spending on student loans and pensions, freezes on public sector pay and an effort to cut spending to avoid rises in taxes.

No Children Allowed: New ‘Quiet Zone’ on Airline AirAsia

When traveling, sometimes you experience the occasional noise of a crying infant or have your seat kicked by a rowdy child behind you.

However, those who want to have a quiet flight may have found relief.

AirAsia, a low cost airline that has flights to Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia has announced a “quiet zone” on all of its AirAsia X flights.

Starting in February 2013, rows 7-14 of the A330 aircraft will be reserved only for passengers aged 12 and up. AirAsia is the second airline to develop a child-free zone, similar to that of its rival, Malaysia Air, who banned children from the first-class upper deck of their A380 aircraft.

According to AirAsia’s website, the quiet zone promises “Minimal noise with less disturbance,” “Ambience with soft lighting,” and all this “At no extra cost.”

The airline is being strict with this policy. According to the website, “If you have a member of your group that is under 12 years old, the system will not allow you to select a seat in the quiet zone.” However, there are exceptions to every rule. You are never 100 percent guaranteed to have a completely quiet flight. The website claims, “AirAsia X reserves the right to seat a passenger with a guest under 12 at the Quiet Zone during situations deemed necessary for operational, safety or security reasons.”

I do not believe that this was sabotage any more than what political parties constantly do to each other during election time. However, I do feel that the video should be removed from YouTube, as was requested by the El Paso County Clerk’s office, because it contains inaccurate information, and it is causing too many assumptions and rumors among people who do not go to legitimate news sources to gather information.

Madonna’s Concert Rant Could Affect Obama’s Campaign

Madonna took the stage during her MDNA tour in Washington D.C., but not without taking full advantage of her spotlight. Last Monday, Sept.

24, Madonna fired up the crowd with an inspirational speech entailing the great works of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, but ended it on a rather confusing note. Apparently, “for better or for worse... We have a black Muslim in the white house,” Madonna claimed. Are we talking about the same president? Because the current president of the United States is in fact a devout Christian, and has taken great measures to make sure the rest of America is aware of that. Madonna revised her statement, via her spokeswoman on Sept. 26, saying, “I was being ironic on stage...

I know Obama is not a Muslim,” according to washingtonpost.com.

This new and reconsidered comment does not erase her first. What we witnessed here was a great deal of misguided irony, and another instance of a celebrity using their fame to make a questionable political statement.

Madonna has been doing freaky things for a long time, and it’s something her fans and the general public have come to accept. It’s how she became famous. She is a woman known to stir up controversy, like when she upset the Pope because of her 1989 “Like a Prayer” music video in which there were various blasphemous images such as burning crosses. She also posed for a pornographic coffeetable book entitled “Sex” published in 1992. Yet recently, she has fallen into the trend, like many other celebrities,

of using her venues for politics.

Performers don’t have the best track record when it comes to speaking out at their concerts, and Madonna is no exception. This occurrence is similar to the 2003 incident when the Dixie Chicks performed in London and claimed they were ashamed that President George W. Bush was from their home-state of Texas. Country singer Hank Williams Jr. was once the Monday Night Football announcer of “Are you ready for some football?” until he metaphorically compared President Obama to Hitler in October 2011. And even after being in hot water from that comment, Williams called Obama a Muslim as well at a concert Sept. 2 this year. Each of these incidents resulted in a backlash neither artist ever fully recovered from. The Dixie Chicks’ songs rapidly dropped in the charts and Williams was fired from his job at ESPN. These are blatant examples that if you’re a celebrity with strong opinions, state them at your own risk.

However, Madonna has never really had any career-altering consequences to any of the shocking things she has done. Her stunts have usually resulted in an even greater popularity of her music and image. Throughout her current tour, she’s accused Lady Gaga of imitation, and openly supported the rock group Pussy Riot for speaking out in a Russian cathedral. She even included a video on stage with an image of a swastika on the forehead of Marine Le Pen, the President of France. Lady Gaga’s Positive Self-Image Campaign is Inspiring

After being scrutinized in tabloids for gaining weight, there’s not much celebrities can do except move on and try to ignore the comments. In the past weeks, Lady Gaga has been the media’s latest target regarding her body. But instead of backing away from these attacks, Lady Gaga has embraced them with pride and class. She didn’t succumb to their pressures by hiding away and trying to lose the weight. Instead she created a social media movement called Body Revolution.

On Sept. 25, Lady Gaga posted pictures of herself in just her underwear on her members only website, littlemonsters.com. She included a different caption for each of the four photos that said, “Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15. But today I joined the BODY REVOLUTION. To Inspire Bravery.

And BREED some m$therf*cking COMPASSION.” The power Lady Gaga holds in the world of social media is unbelievable.

In 2011, she ranked number one on Forbes Most Powerful Celebrities. Seeing Katie Couric, a well put together, successful and confident woman on her talk show made it hard for me to imagine her as a young, insecure college student throwing up meals in secret. But I think that her admitting her problems gives hope to young women that they can become successful and work through their insecurities.

We watched in 2010 as Demi Lovato was admitted to rehab due to suffering from anorexia, bulimia and cutting. Since leaving rehab she carries herself quite confidently in her healthier looking body as she continues to win awards for her music and stars as a judge on The X Factor.

These celebrities don’t owe it to anyone to open up about their most private problems, but by doing so they become strong role models for young people. Even boys can go through these issues. Hopefully, by having some male celebrities open up about their struggles with eating disorders or other forms of selfharm, they will give hope to the young men who are going through this too.

High Schools’ ‘Plan B’ Dispersal Should Require Parental Consent

Connecting Adolescents to Comprehensive Health (CATCH) is a pilot program that New York City high schools have been testing for the past year. Through this program teenage girls are provided with Plan B, the morning-after pill, free of cost and without parental consent in an attempt to lower the rates of high school pregnancy, according to ABC News.

CATCH was launched in five NYC schools in early 2011 before expanding this year to include eight new schools.

CNN found that the schools in the program were chosen because the neighborhoods they were in lacked nearby clinics and health services or had high teen pregnancy rates.

CATCH has an “opting out” policy where parents can remove their daughters from the program through a form that is sent to parents in the mail.

According to the NYC Department of Health, only one to two percent of parents chose to opt out their children.

However, quite a few parents have reported to various news networks that they never received the letter.

This is a huge problem, seeing as if no letter is returned, the student is automatically allowed in the program, parental permission or not.

That makes this letter of permission an invalid measure of program consent.

The Parents’ Choice Coalition group argued that the policy should be switched to “opt in” instead. I agree because requiring parents to sign children up for the service is a sure way of verifying parental consent.

If their parents did not opt out, or submit the form at all, school nurse offices can dispense Plan B emergency contraception and other services to the student without notifying the parents.

Plan B, also known as levonorgestrel, is typically an overthe-counter drug, but people under 18 need a prescription. According to The

Bing is One Step Behind Google in Suicide Prevention

Suicide is not an issue that can be handled lightly—every precaution that can be made to prevent someone from taking their own life should be implemented. Google, Yahoo! and ask. com have all taken measures to ensure that their users searching for a method to commit suicide are met with as much resistance as a search engine can provide.

When someone attempts to conduct a web search on Google, Yahoo! or ask.com for the phrase “how to commit suicide,” the auto-complete feature won’t provide the search for you, and if you do type the phrase in its entirety, the first result is the large-font display with the number for the suicide hot line. Anyone who types “how to comm—“ into the search bar of Bing. com is greeted with the auto-filled answer of “how to commit suicide,” and a web search provides related search inquiries such as “how to commit painless suicide” and “how to commit suicide quickly.”

After this was brought to notice, Bing made sure the link to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline website was the first result. Although this link is not distinguished from the rest of the links and the number is not made clearly visible, so the search result could be easily passed over by someone skimming the results.

Bing has recently released an advertisement campaign where users compare search results from Bing to those from Google, but the experiment has failed miserably on multiple accounts.

While Bing Senior Director Stefan Weitz has told webpronews.com that “in some cases we do prioritize the hot line,” I don’t think that’s enough. If Google, Yahoo! and Ask can provide large-print, top-of-the-page messages to those searching to end their lives, Bing is entirely capable of doing so as well. It could be the difference between someone choosing to end their lives, and for Bing to make a gaff like this and not immediately making a clear effort to display the hot line number on their search results is unacceptable.

Youthful Hockey Squad Content With Start

As an extraordinarily young team, the The University of Tampa’s club hockey squad is happy with the way their season has started.

Currently they are 1-1 in the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) and 1-3 overall. The team is currently made up of more than half underclassmen with large majority being freshmen.

Head Coach Steve Kucera is pleased with the team because he sees an abundance of potential.

“We have a very young but very talented team this year,” said Kucera.

“Half of our team is made up of freshmen and they are all playing reasonably well together and starting to gel after this last weekend. We just have to get back to the fundamentals because our defense is a little sloppy. But once we tighten our defense and really focus on the fundamentals we are going to have a good year.”

Captain and sophomore forward Matt Fenby also thinks the season is going to be an especially good one.

After only playing four games, he believes the team is already starting to play well together.

“I’m really happy with the direction the team is going so far,” said Fenby.

“Even though most of our team is underclassmen, I think we are starting to play well together.”

Fenby is leading the team in goals but the feat doesn’t mean much to him thus far.

“Being the leading scorer so early in the season is meaningless to me,” he said.

“But being the leading scorer in March, now that means something. It’s just too early in the season to be happy with something like that. The other captains Corey Tudor, Darren Gazaille and I work well together as a line; we’re like a family, and any of us could be the leading scorer right now. It’s just how everything plays out during a game.”

Although Fenby makes his status on the team with a nonchalant tone, Coach Kucera accurately depicts what kind of player Fenby is and how he contributes to the team.

“He’s a tremendous player,” Kucera said. “Obviously he is team captain, which is a big deal for only being a sophomore whether it is for a young team like ours or for any team in general. He is a very calm and cool player and has silky hands. He is very smart with the puck. He can control the puck and tempo of play and that’s an important skill forwards need to have. I

have really enjoyed watching him mature and grow up as a player this past year and I know he has a lot more potential in him for the future.”

Fenby, who has been playing hockey for 16 years, enjoys the game and could see himself playing even after he leaves UT.

“I could definitely see myself playing after my college career,” Fenby said. “I love the game and can’t see myself not playing it anymore. If I could, I would want to play for the Boston Bruins because they are the best team in the league,” added Fenby, just so happens to be from Boston. “One of the quotes I kind of live by is ‘All roads lead to the beer leagues; some are just longer than others.’ I think that explains how I know I will continue to play hockey in the future, but I still have some time until then.”

After their last home game against the University of Florida, the Spartan team was incredibly pleased with attendance from fans.

“We were so happy that all of the buses were filled for the UF game,” Fenby said.

“We love when the fans come because it makes it feel like we are playing real hockey. We really want for our games to continue to draw fans in.”

The Spartan club hockey team next plays at home on October 4. before hosting Embry-Riddle.

Most exciting though, is their Nov. 12 match-up with USF. The game will be played on the Tampa Bay Lightning’s home ice, in the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

Sophomore Jackie Neff set a career high with seven kills while junior Holly Reschke had six. Setter Kahley Patrick also had a great outing, assisting on 29 attacks while finishing with a team high 14 digs, while Scholtz contributed 11 digs.

“I have played a lot of sports but Coach Catanach is the best coach I have ever had,” said Burke. I came in as athletic, but still a little raw, but he helped me improve a lot in just one year. He taught me things I didn’t even think i had to know about volleyball.”

Then Saint Leo came to the Martinez Sports Center the next night, and once again, these Spartans did not disappoint.

Selkridge had another outstanding game, as she led the Spartan offense with a .591 attack percentage and tied Yingling with a team leading 14 kills.

Burke, Scholtz and Patrick also had superb outings. Burke had eight kills with a .583 percentage, Scholtz had a

team leading 19 digs while Patrick had a double double for a second consecutive night with 39 assists and 13 digs.

“I think we can go all the way,” said Patrick. “If we play as hard as we know we can as a team and we keep growing and peak at the right moment, than we can win it all.”

Junior Frances Cardenas also contributed in a big way with 10 digs.

The Spartans swept their second straight match over an SSC rival, albeit one that is sliding in Saint Leo, who left Martinez with an 0-4 record in league play and only a 6-6 overall mark. Scholtz’s stellar defensive play led to a SSC Defensive Player of the Week award.

“Jackie Neff has stepped up for us and has been a stable presence,” said Catanach. “Meagan Burke is a day to day player because of her shoulder issue, but she has been solid. Jessica Yingling is why we are where we are at this point.”

As long as Catanach can keep these ladies on the right track, a second straight SSC Championship is definitely in reach.

And if they capture that crown, another deep run into the Division II National Championships could end up in a second title for Catanach and this storied program.

Volleyball Finds Touch, Victorious in Five Straight this team has the looks of one that could win an SSC Championship as well as march deep into the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Led by a cadre of stars, including reigning SSC Player of the Year Danielle Selkridge, middle hitter Meagan Burke and rising libero Jen Scholtz, Coach Chris Catanach’s squad has posted an 11-2 record to start off the season, with multiple wins over ranked opponents, including No. 5 Central Missouri and No. 21 Colorado Mines.

However, these Spartans have had their most impressive wins this past weekend, as they swept SSC conference foes Florida Southern and Saint Leo at home with identical 3-0 wins and improved their SSC record to a solid 40 start.

“We were gutty,” said Coach Catanach.

NCAA Trumps NFL In Every Way

I awoke on Monday morning with the strangest vision. A world of vibrant colors and real history surrounded me. There were these things called “traditions” and “idiosyncrasies” that made each and every football team unique. A field of blue.

It was a world of pigskin that didn’t know anything about replacement referees or bounty scandals or beer sponsors. It was a simpler place. And it was played on Saturdays.

The collegiate level is simply the most entertaining and pure platform for American football.

“No!” You might scream. “The NFL rocks my socks! I can’t draft Clemson QB Tajh Boyd to my fake team on the internet and bet money that he, compounded with many other unrelated players, will win me glory and cash!”

This is true. Fantasy football is the NFL’s monopoly, and it’s often the argument fans use when defending the league.

Because of the nature of NFL contracts and naming rights, both fantasy football and NFL video games have created closer connection with fans. NCAA ‘13 would be a whole lot better with some last names.

I can admit that I love fantasy sports, and in particular, fantasy football. But lately, I’ve come to a couple of sobering realizations: 1. As a sports journalist, fantasy sports are bad. Sports betting is bad. Bias and vested interest are bad.

2. Teams and rivalries don’t really matter to me anymore.

3. College football, without this faux-

personal relationship with players, makes me happier.

This past weekend, I took in three live football games. I covered a high school game on Friday night filled with mistakes and complete with an hour-long weather delay. On Saturday night, I headed to the USF vs. FSU game and on Sunday, I experienced RGIII’s first fourth quarter NFL comeback.

The NFL and NCAA atmospheres couldn’t have been more different.

Thanks to the reasonable price that tickets were set at for students of both schools early in the year, the college crowd was younger and more chipper.

On Saturday night though, my eyes were stapled to the field. Every time FSU called another failed option play, I mashed my leg with my fist. The game was close enough for some banter between sections, and some horn and tomahawk hand-signals to be tossed around.

There was some extra-curricular activity at the Bucs’ game as well though; we watched a shirtless Redskins fan drunkenly assault a Bucs fan in our section.

No punches were thrown but Mr. Redskin also added some symbolic hand signals of his own as he was escorted by Tampa Police out of the stadium.

I face-palmed hard when I noticed that Brian Hartline garnered 253 receiving yards whilst warming my fantasy bench.

Aside from Steelers vs. Ravens and the NFC East, no rivalries even come close to NCAA standards. I can literally rattle off 10 college games I’d pick to watch before Cincinnati against Cleveland.

Has there been a game with the energy of USC-Stanford in the NFL yet? I realize it’s early but isn’t that another plus for the college level? Every single game matters. I can’t wait to see the playoffs in the NCAA, so detractors will have one less knock on the BCS. Pride in each conference exists; when was the last time you heard a Jaguars fan

(yes, Jaguars’ fans do exist) brag about the AFC South the way an LSU fan brags about the SEC? Finally, it comes down to the money.

College football economics are an odd thing and truly the sport’s biggest flaw.

To sell merchandise, but again, not rights to a player’s name, is still to make money on a student’s performance without giving that student a direct portion of that profit.

An education, in the form of a scholarship, is a valuable tool, but I’m not sure it’s equal to the money a star athlete can bring to his school in the ways of recruiting, fundraising, ticket sales, and name recognition.

Though it smells funny to an outsider, you have to wonder if players and their families are really concerned about it.

Wouldn’t they have said something themselves by now, after so many years within the same system?

The NFL is a money-making monster while the NCAA is mostly comprised of student-athletes working toward everyday professions. I’ve got to root for the veterinarian-in-training over the $60 million running back.

When it comes down to it, college football brings together the traditions and integrity of century-old institutions, and gives fans opportunity in more than just 32 huge regions. Lee Corso is better than Chris Berman and Michigan vs. Notre Dame is better than Philadelphia vs. New York.

Yell and scream all you want, but if fantasy sports are your strongest argument, then you’re probably wrong..

U.S. Golf Falls Harder Than Its Economy

Days before the first presidential debate of 2012, the United States of America suffered one of the biggest collapses in Ryder Cup history.

America was ousted 14 ½ - 13 ½ by Europe, who has now won seven of the past nine Ryder Cups, even with America going into the final day with a 10-6 lead.

America came back from that same score in 1999, which, at the time, was the greatest comeback in Cup history.

Things looked shaky early on for Europe, as the No. 1 golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy, arrived to the course just eight minutes before his scheduled tee time upon police escort.

McIlroy apparently was on the Eastern Time Zone despite the tournament being played in Illinois. He had no time for practice, but he didn’t need any.

McIlroy still came up with birdie after birdie, and was able to beat Keegan Bradley to give Europe some early momentum.

Bradley never led the match.

Phil Mickelson lost a frustrating match to Justin Rose. Rose finished out holes 16-

18 in fashion, nailing three puts that were a combined 59 feet long, including birdies on 17 and 18.

Tiger Woods cannot be forgotten here either. Woods was the anchor for the U.S. and didn’t win a single match all weekend.

He missed a 3 ½-foot putt on the 18th hole of the final day, conceding a half point and helping secure the win for Europe.

Woods’ fellow anchor, Steve Stricker, too was unable to win a single match all weekend. Stricker watched in disbelief as European Martin Kaymer drained a clinching 6-foot putt, gaining the point Europe needed to go ahead.

This was a heart wrenching loss for America on its own soil. Who knows what would have happened if there was a little bit more traffic in Medinah, Ill. and McIlroy would have arrived 15 minutes later. Or if Justin Rose wasn’t able to drain a 35-foot birdie putt on 17.

Unfortunately for America, McIlroy got there with a few minutes to spare, and Rose was able to make the putt. It just wasn’t in the cards for America this weekend.

Fueled by Frustration, NFL Reaches Deal with Refs TAKE YOUR SHOT The score was 12-7 Green Bay Packers late in the fourth quarter on Monday Night Football. The Seattle Seahawks were putting up a valiant effort all game, feeding off of their home crowd and chasing Aaron Rodgers all over the field. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson let go of his final pass of the night, a majestic spiral that traveled over 40 yards in the air.

Unfortunately for him, the toss was heading toward a group of five Packers defenders, with only two Seahawks receivers in sight. Seahawks receiver Golden Tate pushed the Packers defender in front of him, and leapt in the air, only to see Packers defensive back Tim Jennings haul the ball in for an interception. Tate continued to fight for the ball, however, and although he only had his fingertips on the ball, managed to wrestle Jennings to the ground with the ball still in Jennings’ possession.

The “referee” facing the back to the crowd signals a time stoppage, indicating the game is over. As he does this, another “referee” at almost the same time signals touchdown, overturning the first’s call and giving the Seahawks an improbable victory and the Packers a crushing defeat. The replay shows the same thing everyone else sees, an interception, but to no avail. The call stands.

TJ Lang, the Packers offensive guard said it best on his Twitter account after the game.“Got $#@% by the refs..

Embarrassing. Thanks NFL.” He’s right. After three weeks, hundreds of bad calls, and millions of fans watching

in disbelief, the replacement refs were, as Lang so eloquently put it, embarrassing.

The epitome of the word. The only question I have is how does a billion dollar organization not have the most qualified officials possible on the field?

And better yet, how did Roger Goodell and the National Football League figure out their mistake weeks after I did?

Better late than never is the phrase that comes to mind.

My God, are those Ed Hochuli’s guns?

The NFL referees are back! No more phantom pass interference calls, no more weird hand signals and long delays and most importantly, no more head referees stumbling through calls more awkwardly than a college freshman during a PowerPoint presentation.

The best part is, now we all get to complain about the regular referees. Look, nobody’s perfect, but what is lost in all this is that although the replacement referees underachieved during their tenure, there have been countless times that the fully qualified referees have made calls just as head-scratching.

The Tom Brady “tuck rule”, Ed Hochuli’s debacle of an incomplete pass call on Jay Cutler, and last year’s week one Calvin Johnson touchdown catch that turned out not to be all come to mind.

What we should all strive for is the day this year when we forget this even happened, when the referees become a non-story and we forget they’re even there (unless you’re a Packers fan).

Let’s just hope the replacement referees can get their jobs at Footlocker back now..

The Rays did their part, but Oakland’s win sent the A’s an A.L. Wild Card spot.

The ability to orchestrate talent so it can play together as a unit is not an inherent trait. Having to coalesce and discipline a team to play as one, being able to take a group of talented players and motivate them to play as a team is a significant responsibility.

Women’s head soccer Coach Gerry Lucey was faced with this task as the team fielded seven new starters this season.

“We’ve got a new group we need to get on the same page,” said Lucey. “There are lots of new faces and a lot of talented individuals we need get to mesh together.”

Freshmen forward Cici Gonzalez is one of those new faces. Gonzalez, a criminology major from Lutz, Florida, has made an early impact for the team, scoring nine goals in her first 10 games.

Gonzalez also won the Sunshine State Conference player of the week award after scoring a game-winning goal against Saint Leo in the game’s final minute. “It was awesome to get that award,” said Gonzalez.

“It was very humbling.”

Entering the season, coach Lucey wanted to implement a possession oriented type offense. He wanted to win the time of possession battle every game and needed players that could control the ball.

Last year Lucey saw Gonzalez playing for a Fusion soccer club team and recognized the type of player he was looking for. “She could move the ball at will,” said Lucey. “She was controlling the ball, the ball wasn’t controlling her.”

Gonzalez admitted the transition to becoming a college student athlete has not been without difficulty. “Trying to do homework on the bus, get assignments in on time can be difficult,” said Gonzalez. ”It’s a challenging adjustment but I love soccer so for me it’s worth it.”

Some might say the real difficulty takes place when trying to adjust to the quicker, more competitive style of play in college.

“Everyone is good and everyone can play,” said Gonzalez. “If you’re not committed it will show.”

While the transition may be difficult, veteran players who already experienced the change for themselves generally assist the newcomers. “I never felt left out or on my own, teammates accepted me really early,” said Gonzalez. “We really have great team chemistry, we all hang out off the field as well.”

The addition of Gonzalez added to an already impressive group of forwards that includes Sophomores Gabby Russo and Lauren Moore. The trio of Russo, Moore and Gonzalez have accounted for 22 goals in the first 10 games, resulting in some referring to them as the ‘big three.’

“Its really the big four,” said Lucey.

“Courtney Peffley should be in that group as well.” Lucey touts that his big four control the ball and can be a handful for defenders. They fit in perfectly with the possession type offense Lucey has emphasized this season and have led the team to an 8-2 record overall.

“I think we can go all the way,” an enthusiastic Gonzalez said. “We keep getting better every game. I think we have a real shot at a national championship.”

While Lucey shared in his freshmen forward’s aspirations, he was very much more cautiously optimistic. “It’s a crapshoot,” said Lucey shrugging his shoulders.

“Once you get to the knockout stage anything can happen. You can have what you think is the best team in the country but an injury or a bad officiating job and you’re out of it.”

As of now, the women Spartans are one of the best teams in the country, ranked No. 14 in the NSCAA. “It’s nice to get recognized but our rank at the end of the season is the only thing that matters,” said Lucey. “Right now we’re only focused on our next opponent.”

Tampa Head Coach Gerry Lucey is UT’s winningest coach with 80 victories.

No. 22 Women’s Soccer [9-3, 4-1] Tampa’s four-game winning streak came to a halt this past Saturday when the team lost 1-0 to Rollins. However, the Spartans came right back, winning Tuesday at Barry. They play this Saturday at 5 p.m. when they host Florida Tech University.

Men’s Soccer [5-3-1, 2-2] The Spartans upset No. 16 Rollins this past week, ending their threegame losing streak. Tampa will try to emulate its early play, when the team went 4-0-1 through its first five games. The men will next square off this Saturday at 8 p.m. at home against Florida Tech University.

M. Soccer Conquers No. 16 Rollins

When it comes to sports, all it takes is for one win to change the course of a season. A season-changing win can reunify the team after a string of losses or even push the team to new heights. Last Saturday’s victory against No. 16 Rollins College (4-3-2, 0-2-1 SSC) was hopefully exactly that for the University of Tampa men’s soccer team (5-3-1, 2-2 SSC).

“It felt great to end our run of poor form against Rollins, a team that we’ve had great battles with in the past,” stated sophomore Tyler Blackwood after UT’s victory over Rollins.

The team had lost three consecutive games prior to its game against Rollins.

“All teams go through adversity, but I think the true sign of who you are is shown where you end up when it counts,” commented sophomore Joshua Freese. “I think we’ll be more than happy where we finish.”

After a particularly brutal 4-0 loss to No. 1 Lynn University a few days earlier, the men’s soccer team had to regroup and figure out a way to defeat nationally ranked Rollins College. After UT defender Andrew Clare scored a goal late in the first half, it was up to the Spartans to defend their home field by making sure Rollins did not score.

Rollins shot 15 times on goal in the second half. UT’s junior goalkeeper David Niepel was able to shut out the Tars.

“It felt great beating Rollins, especially after the three previous losses,” commented Niepel on the victory. “But now we have to focus on our next game in order to back up the performance with a good result against Barry University and on the weekend against Florida Tech.”

The Spartans will indeed have to remain focused for the rest of the season.

After stumbling a bit in the beginning of SSC play, they hurt their chances at winning the regular season conference title. However, with Lynn losing their first conference game on Sunday, there is still a chance.

The team has a tough schedule coming up with games against Barry and Florida Tech, leading up to a rematch against Rollins.

“I believe in this team and think we can be playing come December. But it takes commitment, from the first guy to the last guy,” said Freese.

“Every game in this conference is a battle but if we can come together, I see us doing big things.”

No. 5 Volleyball [11-2, 4-0] After a relatively slow start, the volleyball team has won five straight matches and 15 straight sets, dominating their opponents.

The team travels to Lynn and Nova Southeastern, respectively, this Friday and Saturday, to attempt to stay perfect in the SSC.
