Fo r in sta n ce s, creating a path that alters the pedestrian movement pattern for possible engagement by the architecture, through manipulation of spatial qualities, light & shadow, distinctive material and colour palette acco rding to inve stigated human behavior and cultures. I SOL AT ED WOR KI N G CO MM U N I TY Most working communities on site exist in the spaces above the shophouses, taking over the function and signiďŹ cance of the shophouse typology. These private offices occupied by small companies has created a much more inward community that isolates them from each other, which poses a huge contrast to the vibrant community of the shophouses in the past. R E-I N V EN T I N G 5 FO OT WAY Investigating the prominent feature of shophouses, the 5 footway, on how does it act as a social connector in the past to engages and bring the community together. The the spatial identity of ďŹ ve foot way is captured and re-invented into a street within the co-working community through various spatial design to engages the community that takes over the shophouse typology, the office workers.

They were forced to occupy spaces above shophouses despite the run-down condition because of their deficiency in spending power. It is expensive to rent, let alone own a space in that area for small business owners as the options they have are all large floor plates that pose to be unnecessary and costly.

This district is mainly dominated by the local community from Kampong bharu due to its proximity. Connect to the pedestrian bridge that links to different way points including Maju Junction mall, and lrt monorail station, high accessibility. Currently is a private owned carpark that serves the office workers nearby. Majority office buildings around, with high density og commercial buildings heading south towards Jalan TAR.

In the past, the five foot way has became a public space where vibrant activities happens along the stretch. The reason behind it is that, five foot way extends and connects the adjacent lot under the same roof, where people naturally uses the space for different activities, maximizing the engagement with the community.

Offices with high privaccy level dictates a boundary for the movement of the workers. As workers have a limited time break hours, the offices that occupy the spaces above shophouse have turned the five foot way into a transition corridor.

Spaces clustered along the axis allows engagement with the passerby that travels through the building. The 5 foot way is re-invented where office spaces and public spaces lies along the axis, engaging the passerby as well as the working community.

Pedestrian bridge forms an angled landing that create a sense of direction towards the “street� that penetrates the building. The continuous path is treated with brick pavement which reinforce the sense of direction through the building.

With the site located on the arterial road of Jalan Sultan Ismail, traffic congestion poses as an issue as commuting becomes time consuming. A direct solution to this is to move home closer to work.

Taking references to SOHO (Small Office Home Office), SOHO didn’t achieve its full potential bcause it was too sterile. It lacked ‘humanism’, as the work place it too close living space, with no physical separation.
