MAA: Looking Out for No. 1 in PH By Mike Baños One of Malaysia’s most dynamic conglomerates yesterday opened its first branch office in the Philippines in six years in one of the country’s most dynamic regions, in a robust demonstration of its aggressive bid to become the country’s leading provider of financial products. The blessing and grand launch of MAA General Assurance Philippines, Inc. (MAAGAP) Cagayan de Oro office at Door 10, 2nd floor of the South Bank Plaza at the corner of Don A. Velez and Yacapin streets in the heart of the city was attended by the company’s top officers led by Daniel C. Go, President and Chief Executive Officer; Northern Mindanao’s top businessmen and executives and city officials led by Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro). “MAAGAP has noted the robust growth of the region led by Cagayan de Oro City and is confident it can generate good business from the expanding regional company,” said Bienvenido Paul C. Ferrer III, branch manager. MAA General Assurance Philippines offers insurance

services for motor car, personal accident and health, property or fire and allied perils, engineering, aviation, marine and hull, casualty and bonds. MAAGAP is an affiliate of the MAA Group of Companies, whose parent company is MAA Group Berhad (“MAAG”) - [formerly known as MAA Holdings Berhad] Controlled by the Melewar Group, MAA Group Berhad is listed on the main board of the Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad. “The MAA Group’s commitment is simple and straightforward ,” said Tunku Dato’ Ya’cob Bin Tunku Tan Sri Abdullah, Executive Chairman of MAA Holdings Berhad in a recent statement on its aggressive thrust in the Philippines and Asia. “We undertake to provide our clients with excellent service in the field of financial investments. We set

high standards for ourselves and we apply these standards to everything that we do – from the products we sell to the services we provide. This is the underlying motivation that moves us to excel. I have no doubt in my mind that we will evolve into one of the greatest financial service providers worldwide.” MAA’s decision to open its latest branch in Cagayan de Oro underlies its confidence in the strength and dynamism of Northern Mindanao, one of the country’s fastest growing regional economies. SM Prime Holdings recently disclosed to city officials its intention to construct a new P2-billion mall C.M. Recto Avenue. Next month, the Ayala Group opens its P5-billion Centrio Mall along the same thoroughfare. Under construction are the Limketkai Mall’s new retail buildings, Pure-

to serve the sprawling Crown Communities. Unlike other regions in Mindanao, Region X has a relatively balanced economy as demonstrated by its breaching the US$1-billion mark in exports last year, a robust 14.85 percent increase from the 2010 total of US$926.91-million. Another growth area is tourism and its related hospitality industries. Last year, tourist arrivals in the region

grew by a robust 10.07 percent to 1,632,862, driven by a hefty 89.89% growth in foreign tourist arrivals. To accommodate the growing traffic, new hotels by Limketkai, Tunes Hotel, Sogo, Ayala’s Kukun and the Zealep Group’s are coming up. The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) recently cited Cagayan de Oro as the “most businessfriendly local government unit” in Mindanao.
