20 villages flooded; mayor asks for food By AL JACINTO, Regional editor-Zamboanga
ZAMBOANGA City––Heavy rains flooded 20 of 26 villages in the town of Siocon in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Norte, officials said on Tuesday. Mayor Cesar Soriano has appealed for food and blanket for thousands of people affected by flash floods. “We need food and blanket for those affected by the floods. Twenty of the town’s 26 villages are now underwater and roads are now impassable,” he said. Maj. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz, the regional army commander, said he sent troops to the town to help in the evacuation of families trapped in the floods. He said at least 400 families have been evacuated to safer grounds after heavy
rains submerged many areas in Siocon. He said some villages reported flood water as high as one meter. One bridge was partially damaged by the flood, he said. “Our troops are already in Siocon and commanders are closely coordinating with local government officials and the police to ensure the safety of civilians,” Cruz told the Mindanao Examiner. He said at least 40 houses were totally destroyed by rampaging waters in the villages of Bucana, Makiang, Reconalla and Tamayo.
Bukidnon’s 5.6 quake is of tectonic origin, not volcanic THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) clarified that the 5.6 magnitude quake that recently hit Valencia City and Maramag in Bukidnon and neighboring cities and provinces, was caused by the movement of the tectonic plate, said Phivolcs Northern Mindanao Director Marcial Labininay. Labininay said the tectonic plate has its origin between the upland barangays of Guinoyoran and Lourdes of Valencia City. The quake was not related to volcanic activity, said Labininay who added that the epicenter of the quake had a shallow depth. Labininay said last year’s intensity 5.5 quake that hit Valencia and nearby areas is believed to have been triggered by the same fault line, and not by the
Central Mindanao fault, Cabanglasan fault or Tagoloan fault. Mt. Kalayo known as Musuan peak of Maramag and Mt. Kalatungan of Bukidnon are active volcanoes but have no registered volcanic activity, he added. “Its high time for the local government of Bukidnon to fund fault studies in the province as a new faultline is observed in upland Valencia City and Maramag town,” the state-funded Philippine Information Agency (PIA) quoted Labininay as saying. Labininay said the series of quakes in November 7 last year and early September 2012 showed that aside from three confirmed faultlines traversing Bukidnon, a fourth one has emerged, identified as “local fault line.”
