Season of Lent LENT (Latin: Quadragesima, “fortieth”) is an observance in the liturgical year of many Christian denominations, lasting for a period of approximately six weeks leading up to Easter. In most Western denominations Lent is taken to run from Ash Wednesday to Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) or to Easter Eve. The traditional purpose of Lent is the penitential preparation of the believer— through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Passion of Christ on

Barrels of gasoline spill off Tagoloan waters By GERRY L. GORIT, Photo-journalist
MISAMIS Oriental––Recovery efforts are under way to salvage barrels of gasoline that spilled in the sea off the coast of Tagoloan in Misamis Oriental. Residents of the affected seashore said they noticed the oil spill reportedly from the Petron depot around 2 a.m. yesterday.
Emergenc y workers have begun scooping the gasoline and transferring this to drums but the work continues as of press time. The area has been declared a no-lighting-of-fire zone pending complete retrieval operations. Cooking and lighting of cigarettes are prohibited. Because of this
many residents were not able to prepare breakfast this morning. A resident said the oil spill covered about 1/4th of an hectare of the sea surface. Small fishes were reported to be floating dead in the area. Petron officials have refused to be interviewed by the press although they were seen in the area discussing
the oil spill. The particular area affected is San Vicente in Barangay Casinglot, a coastal area where some fishermen live. Municipal and barangay officials have not declared the place a catastrophe area but they are closely monitoring the recovery work being done by emergency workers of Petron.

During Lent, many of the faithful commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penitence. The Stations of the Cross, a devotional commemoration of Christ’s carrying the Cross and of his execution, are often observed. a long and lasting peace in Mindanao. We don’t know what will be the outcome of these peace talks. There is a grim outlook here,” Mohagher Iqbal, the MILF’s chief peace negotiator, told the Mindanao Examiner. Peace talks are set to resume soon after both sides ended negotiations in March in Kuala Lumpur without any concrete agreement.
Malaysia, a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, is brokering the peace talks. The MILF is demanding a Muslim sub-state in the southern region similar to Malaysia, but Manila flatly rejected this and offered the five-province Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao. “We will stick with our demand for a Muslim PEACE/PAGE 7

Who has the last word? THINK a Minute. Someone said: “Death is the worst part of life!” A famous entertainer once said: “I’m not afraid to die, I just don’t want to be there when it happens!” Unfortunately, when it’s our time to die we don’t have any choice but to be there! Death is a fact of life that none of us can escape! Sooner or later, every one of us is going to stand alone and look death in the face! Don’t forget, the statistics and chances of death are 100%, it never fails: one out of every one people die! No one has ever gotten out of it alive! It doesn’t matter how rich, powerful, strong, or healthy we are—we’re all going to die! It may be a few more

Jhan Tiafau Hurst years or next week. So are you ready now? But almost worse than the fact of death is the fear of death. In the back of our minds we know that every day we’re getting closer and closer to the day we die. But is our death the end of us? Does death have the last word? Does it destroy our plans for living and take away all our hope? The answer’s quite simple: it depends on how and
who you’re living for. When it comes to death, Jesus Christ has been there and done that. He walked right into the grave and jaws of death… and came right back out alive! Jesus Christ, not death, is the One Who has the last word. He’s the only person in history who could do it—for one simple reason: He’s God Himself. So we never again have to fear death!

Think A Minute
You see, if you’re living His way every day in a personal relationship with Him, Jesus said He’s going to lead you safely through death into eternal life with Him. Will death have the last word in your life? Not if you choose to live for Jesus Christ! Only Jesus can get you through death—safe and alive! Only He speaks the last word! And it’s the word not of death but of eternal life to every person who will truly believe and live for Him. So today, why not ask Jesus to forgive you for living your way and ask Him to take full control of your life? That’s when you can start living every day with no fear… not even of death! Just Think a Minute.
CHRISTIANS and believers have one characteristic in common. They want to live in a place where natural peace and serenity abound. Both want to enjoy nature’s bounty. They all want to watch the azimuth of infinite horizon. Perhaps, this attitude makes Christians and believers special human beings. Humans are the only creatures that enjoy the wonders of creation. Cris Diaz Christians are humans. As humans, Christians identify themselves with nature. This character is typical especially in the observance of the Holy Week. While the Christendom recalls the passion and death of Jesus Christ, believers flocked to places where they believed they could commune with the unseen Supreme Being. This explains why in observing Holy Week, Christians flocked to mountains and resorts. They climb mountains as a way of penitence and absolution. They tell stories that border on mysteries and unexplained phenomena hoping others to bolster their faith in the existence of Supreme Creator. Most of them climbed mountains in groups and stay a day or two in what seemed to be a self-declared retrospection. Some Christians go to beach resorts. The summer heat on Holy Week may have driven anyone – Christians or not – to enjoy the zephyrs and blue waters. For the rich, backpacked traveling and hopping from one
country to another is a hobby. The Lent and summer are two related seasons of the Christian world. Yet, while majority of the Christians enjoy nature, they must also realize the larger responsibility in preserving it. It is disheartening that most Christians climbed mountains just for the heck of it. Some bring with them their girlfriends or boyfriends. Others simply just enjoy the company of a crowd. In most cases, empty cans, cellophanes, cigarette butts and trash litter mountain trails. Broken tree branches and uncollected garbage are signs that people do not care nature and its environment. Worst, these mountain intruders often start forest fires. It is unfortunate that incident like this usually happened during Holy Week when believers climbed mountains just for fun. There are other places – secluded with a touched of holiness – where believers usually flocked on Holy Week, too. Usually, the keepers of these places make money. No, they do not ask for a fee when one visits their place. There is always a notice to visitors that their donations will keep the place. Strangers professing as devout Christians shell out large sums of money for the donation box. A gesture of gratitude for all the blessings they enjoyed, so they said. In spite of these shortcomings, there are Christians who still observed Holy Week in the doctrine of Christ’s passion and dying in the Cross. They accept the teachings of Christ and the apostles with all their hearts and minds. They are the witness of the faith. react: crisguardian@yahoo.com

No, sir it’s not a big deal. It only seems like a big deal because your perspective is the same size as your problem. You see? You have to think outside of the box. In the first place, if we allow somebody to put us there, then you hand them freely your power in an easy way. Now think back. Do you remember what you were stressing out about yesterday? You might, but what about a week ago? A month ago? A year ago? Can you pick a day at random from
a calendar of five years ago and remember exactly what colossal, insurmountable problem you were dealing with on that specific day? Chances are, no you can’t, but chances also are, it seemed pretty overwhelmingly important at the time, so try to use these “H.A.L.T.= When you are too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired it’s time to slow down and take some time for yourself, otherwise you will say or do something that could complicate your life further…and you don’t need that” especially if there’s someone out there who tries to discredit and maimed you and all. THE IMPORTANCE OF BASIC LITERACY PROGRAM ON THE UPLIFTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR OUT-OF-SCHOOL YOUTHS AND ADULTS By Edgardo S. Miranda District In-Charge West Butuan District-I Non-Formal Education is equivalent to Alternative Learning System or ALS today. It is a program of the Department of Education to cater to out-of school youths and adults who cannot pursue their studies in high school even in elementary school so that they can still achieve education even if they had no formal schooling. ALS aims to elevate the literacy level of the people in the community especially those who have not finished their education. The ALS is the answer of the EFA, Education All that all Filipinos can be educated. Through ALS, achieving education and learning is no longer a Problem, financial free because the ALS is a free tuition fee system. West Butuan District-1 is managed by Mr. Edgardo S. Miranda as District ALS Manager. He managed to produce 148 outof-school youths to complete the Basic Literacy Program. The completers came from barangays Bancasi, Bobon, Dumalagan, Kinamlutan and Libertad. For the last four years of ALS existence in West Butuan District-1, a total of 653 enrollees availed themselves of the program with 86 students from Barangay Bancasi, 149 from Barangay Bonbon, 63 from Barangay Dumalagan, 110 from Barangay Kinamlutan and 245 from Barangay Lbertad. A total of 216 students successfully finished the program with 51 completers in 2008, 42 in 2009, 55 in 2010, and 68 in 2011. Lessons were taught by different ALS instructional managers headed by Mrs. Buenafe M. Leop, the District ALS Coordinator. Students were also taught skills like household cosmetic product-making and other “Pangkabuhayan Skills”. ALS has reduced the number of jobseekers and helped in minimizing the problem of alcohol and drug dependence in our community. The government has shown its concern for the Filipino youths. Indeed, ALS has uplifted the education of out-of-school youths and adults.

today’s problem? A day, a month, a year? In all likelihood, you’ll probably just get a good night’s sleep and forget about it. Or, if you don’t forget about it, maybe you’ll at least get some sleep and find that it seems so much more manageable upon awaking. It usually works that way. So breathe. Relax. Count to ten. And remind yourself who’s in charge. If it’s one thing crossing over twice has taught me, it’s how to view things and put things in perspective,…. and look at the bigger, overall picture……..

doing this to protect the environment. “If we are going to protect the environment then it will redound to the best interest of humanity,” he said. He explained they have conceptualized this summit and invited all the stakeholders to join hands on natural farming because it is the only way, where they can access to healthy food. He added: “If you have access to natural food you’re going to help the body, you will have healthy people and healthy community. If you have a healthy community this is a community that can push development.” E arthsoul S olutions is urging that the people should go back to the old practices but there is an improvement. “We are still going to ugse fertilizers, but this time it is organic. So we are going to use the leaves of the plants we are going to decompose and introduce micro organisms.” Su m m it or g a n i z e r s headed by Ibno Turabin, a civic leader from Basilan and Zamboanga Peninsula, said that natural /organic farming method will be discussed during the April Environmental Summit in Davao City and that Region 9 and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) will be heavily involved during the event. “We will also be discussing the effects of Climate Change and what happened in Cagayan de Oro City in Iligan City, Compostela Valley and other places in the Philippines. Then, we will be talking about how we are going to reforest our mountains we have the so called agro forestry,” Turabin said. According to him, they are going to inculcate into the minds of the participants in the summit on the value of embracing nature and looking at nature as a vital component in any development program. On the issue of the antiorganic movements, the organizers said they will inform them that we have only one earth and all these things that we are doing is to make the father earth stronger and we are going to restore fertility of the soil
through natural farming.” “We are pro-people. All these things we are doing in protecting environment, natural farming these are all geared toward enhancing the humanity and also preserving bounty of nature in order the next generation comes will be able to enjoy them,” Turabin said. The group als o expressed support to National Greening Program, one of the main thrusts of President Benigno Aquino III, saying that they will support what they can do. “If we will be invited, we will join them because ours is “pro bono.” In the presence of several journalists, Earth-soul Solutions reiterated their appeal to the people, saying that whether they come from private sectors, business, govenrment sectors and NGOs to join them in the concern for environmental protection and organic farming. “We have already seen the symptoms like the Cagayan de Oro case the people are still suffering until this time. We should be serious about this. We just do not look at forest as source of income. We should not forget that there should be short term income of the farmers, and we are going to plant organic vegetables, and all crops to be eaten by the people.”

sub-state in Mindanao and nothing more,” Iqbal said. Iqbal has said they are unlikely to sign any peace deal despite Manila’s earlier statement both sides may be able to ink an agreement that would settle decades-old insurgency in Mindanao. “The greater fear is that we might not even sign it at all if we are not firm on our resolve to push hard in our negotiation. Sad to note, however, that within the first two years of the Aquino administration, we have not signed anything of great consequence that we can show to our people and the world that indeed there is big happening in the current peace negotiation,” Iqbal said. Ghazali Jaafar, the MILF vice chairman for political affairs, also expressed pessimism about the peace talks with the Aquino government, saying negotiations have been going on for a long time now, but nothing concrete has been achieved, except for the cease-fire agreement. “We are very doubtful now whether we can sign a peace deal with government under this present administration,” he said following a caucus with senior MILF leaders in Mindanao. “The assessment of the

What the government peace panel headed by Marvic Leonen did in the last talks was never our immediate expectation which is the reason why we are very much disappointed,” Jaafar said. Mar vic Leonen, the government chief peace negotiator, insisted on the government offer to MILF. But the MILF said the proposal was not comprehensive, but rather a framework for the integration of the Muslims into the existing Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao which comprises the provinces of Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, Maguindanao and Lanao. “Integration is opposite to the aspiration of the Bangsamoro people for self-determination and self-governance. of his public ministry, where he endured temptation by Satan. However, different Christian denominations calculate the “forty days” of Lent differently. In most Western tradition the Sundays are not counted as part of Lent; thus the period from Ash Wednesday until Easter consists of 40 days when the Sundays are excluded. However in the Roman Catholic Church Lent is now taken to end on Holy Thursday rather than Easter Eve, and hence lasts 38 days excluding Sundays, or 44 days in total. In Latin the term quadragesima (translation of the original Greek Τεσσαρακοστή, Tessarakostē, the “fortieth” day before Easter) is used. This nomenclature is preserved in Romance, Slavic and Celtic languages (for example, Spanish cuaresma, Portuguese quaresma, French carême, Italian quaresima, Romanian păresimi, Croatian korizma, Irish Carghas, and Welsh C(a)rawys). In the late Middle Ages, as sermons began to be given in the vernacular instead of Latin, the English word lent was adopted. Source: Wikipedia

ing opposition against the 635-hectare reclamation project that they said will destroy the livelihood of communities in said cities. The residents said the procession had with it a prayer for the eventual discontinuance of the project and Mother Nature as well as the livelihood of hundreds of families will be given protection instead. As a citizen and resident who will be adversely affected by the reclamation
project, former Rep. Cynthia Villar joined the procession together with some officials of the cities of Parañaque, Pasay and Las Piñas. It will be recalled that Villar filed for a Writ of Kalikasan petition with the Supreme Court last March 16 opposimg the reclamation project along the Bacoor-Las Piñas-Parañaque coastline of Manila Bay. Respondents in the petition included Altech Construction, Inc., Philippine Reclamation Authority, Department of Environment and Natural
Resources, Environmental Management Bureau and the City of Las Piñas. Based on a hydrological survey of Tricore Solutions, Inc., should a typhoon as powerful as Tropical Storm “Ondoy” hit the three cities, floods will destroy properties and livelihood of residents. The study also revealed the strong possibility that 65 barangays in Las Piñas, Parañaque, and Bacoor, Cavite will be submerged by flood waters from 0.15 meter to 5.12 meters.
Penitents from the Diocese of Parañaque gathered in front of St. Andrew Cathedral and led the procession passing through Quirino Avenue, La Huerta, Parañaque City as the stations of the Cross moved around the city’s public places. The fourth station of the cross is known as “Freedom Island” where the area will suffer severe damage and destruction following years and decades of being nurtured and developed. The place is also known as Las
Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Eco-Tourism Area (LPPCHEA) where more than 195 bird species are located of which some are considered “most endangered” and can only be found here. The reclamation project is said to destroy mangroves along the coast of Manila Bay owing to lack of salt water, kill the ecosystem and deny home to more than 5,000 birds.
