Group distributes P1.3-million worth of SRK materials to Sendong survivors By BONG D. FABE

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– The International Organization for Migration (IOM) had distributed P1.3 million worth of badly-needed Shelter Repair Kits (SRKs) to 205 families whose homes have been damaged by the deluge brought by Tropical Storm Washi (local name: Sendong) nine days before Christmas day last year. Each beneficiary-family received P7,000 worth of SRK from the IOM. The distribution of the SKR took place at the Macanhan covered court. “Kini nga mga materyales nga gihatag sa IOM igo-igo lang g yud nga makapatindog mi pagbalik sa among gamay’ng payag (These materials given by IOM is just enough for us to construct a small house),” said Danilo Oponi. Oponi said he is very thankful to IOM for its help and that he is very happy

that despite the tragedy, humanitarian and aid agencies such as IOM are there to help him and others like him get back on their feet. Caraga police scores big vs loose firearms BUTUAN City––Personnel of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Caraga region conducted two separate operations which resulted to the confiscation of high powered firearms allegedly owned by Pedro Francisco O. Fernandez in Barangay Doongan, Butuan City and in Barangay Valentina in La Paz, Agusan del Sur. Armed with s earch warrants, police operatives seized said firearms inside the house leased by Fernandez and confiscated 2 M16 rifles, 2 caliber 45 pistols, 2 AK 47 rifles, 1 AK 45, 1 caliber 22 and assorted magazines and ammunitions. But a certain Edcel Ba-

sister, the caretaker of the place, questioned the legality of the warrant issued to the raiding authorities since they are operating a security agency but when asked to present any pertinent papers, the caretaker declined to show the permits. At 2:30 p.m. on the said date, operatives of the 13th RCIDU, RSOTG, RPSB, PNP-SAF and Agusan del Sur Police also enforced the search warrant at the bunkhouse of Fernandez in Tagleong Palm Oil Plantation Complex in La Paz and confiscated 1 M14 rifle, 2 M16 rifles, 2 carbine rifles, 2 caliber 45 pistols, 4 rounds of rifle grenade, 1 hand grenade, 1 claymore mine, 14 rounds of 40 mm,

However, the Bible is clear that Maundy Thursday reminds either Christians or non-Christians of the values of love and service with humility. Certainly, service with humility is a value that a person must observe in dealing with his neighbors. Christ teachings of humility and service to fellowmen are the values that today’s leaders are lacking. There are few leaders, however, that observed Holy Week in the company of their constituents. These leaders characterized the teaching of Christ’s service with humility on Maundy Thursday. This is in contrast to some, if not most, leaders who spent their Holy Week in the comfort of luxurious vacations. More often, it would be unlikely of an elected official staying to serve constituents while at the same time observing Holy Week. Yet, Cong. Bambi Emano, 2nd District, Misamis Oriental, is just doing things unusual to most elected public officials. Instead of spending his time in vacations elsewhere, the young Emano opt to make a round of his district. Every Holy Week, Bambi goes around to confer with his constituents. He wants to make sure that basic services reach them. Bambi typifies a humble legislature who serves his constituents in the humility of Christ. Compliant and malleable judiciary “THE Judiciary has been at the receiving end of continued and relentless attacks on its independence, from the media-bashing to budgetary cuts and impeachment. All these have only one purpose, and that is to create a compliant and malleable judiciary.” This was the message from no less the Chief Justice Renato Corona who is the trajectory of the Harry Tambuatco impeachment complaint. These very strong words issued by the Supreme Court of the land are a warning to our democracy. If the masses that compose our majority following the theory of a democracy are to be adhered to, we are doomed. The masses compose the uninformed, many of the poorly educated, those who refuse to be body-politic and are nonchalant to these developing issues, are headed for the dictates of a singular power belonging to the oligarchs, the hacienderos, the warlords, if not the headless anarchical communists, the Makati Business Club? or even the media barons now controlling public opinion. It is interesting to note that media compliment of the surveys now even dictate the voice of the people––who in reality are unaffected by all the politics trying to survive and make a living on a daily basis. While the assumptions are correct of the Chief Justice unless his credibility and integrity are totally destroyed with a conviction from the all-powerful and supreme impeachment court, our freedoms as we know it may be lost, accordingly. Does

this not scare you at all? The absolute power will be of that of the executive. A martial law in disguise, as reiterated by the CJ! As for the Senator-Judges who have pointed out in multiple interviews with the media have admitted; the power of public opinion has due sensitivities and influence towards their re-election bids making them vulnerable to mob rule over legalities which is allegedly the basis for right or wrong. I have always pointed out that the majority rule controls our countries politics and economics. The question is who controls the majority? As for the impeachment trial, where does rule of law dictate? But isn’t this what the all-powerful and supreme Senator-Judges pledged to in their oath on the onset of the trial of the year. Imbued personal interests seem to prevail over good of country and of law. If and when one day the majority will realize the manipulation, this will ignite civil unrest unknown of any Spring that has taken place. By then and only if hunger and freedoms are curtailed, will a people react towards injustices that hopefully will correct the crookedness? That which will be realized and it always has a way of rearing its head, eventually or otherwise, will cause the downfall of the traitors of our country. Our leaders who have become puppets of our media drivers who pose as patriots who promote the crab mentality of the idiots have held this country back since the 60s. Panaad sa Camiguin 2012 By JORIE C. VALCORZA

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin - Known to many for its spectacular wonders, be it in the array of finest foods, fruits, waters and people, Camiguin is but a tourist perfect destination. The island receives flock of local and foreign tourist all year round and the Lenten season is among its peak period of the year,

every March or April. After more than 30 years, “Panaad in Camiguin” still continues to draw huge numbers of pilgrims and tourist alike. It is a religious activity that was started by a handful of islanders in the 80’s and has found its place the region’s annual calendar of top tourist come-ons.

“Panaad” is a Cebuano term which means a religious vow of sacrifice to take the 64-kilometer walk around the island-province, highlighted with an uphill walk in Mt. Vulcan where the 14 Stations of the Cross are located. The penitent walk normally commences immediately after visitors sets foot on Benoni Port in the town of Mahinog. The crowd then

goes towards Mambajao, and then to Catarman town where the Mt. Vulcan climb awaits each devotee, a nevermiss part of the Panaad, then sets off again until they reach back the place to where they have started. TANDAG City – Through the office of Mayor Alexander Pimentel, four livelihood skills trainings were conducted, in coordination with TESDA, recently at Season’s Park Apartelle. CAMIGUIN – Twenty farmers, including the unemployed women of Sagay town, learned the art of turning coconut husks into another income generating project of their respective families. They extracted coir, a natural fiber found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut, and processed into ropes, floor mats, doormats, brushes, mattresses, finer brushes, strings and nets, among others.

No power shortage in Mindanao: DOE THE GOVERNMENT has assured stakeholders that the power shortage in Mindanao is being addressed. Department of Energy (DoE) Undersecretary Josefina Patricia Asirit said that there is no power shortage in the island. Her assertion ran in contrast to cities like Cotabato, General Santos, Kidapawan and Zamboanga provinces where there are power outage. During a meeting with stakeholders, Asirit said ‘there is a (power) situation in Mindanao but this is being

addressed by the government even its technical aspect.’ “The DoE Secretary is biting the bullet here... unpopular decisions have to be made to solve the power situation in Mindanao,” she said. The Mindanao business sector, however, wants the government to map out concrete plans to address power shortage in the island. Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) Chairperson Vicente Lao said that the government could not present plans between now and 2014

MISAMIS Occidental––Provincial legislators under Vice Governor Henry Oaminal are backing the plan of the two electric cooperatives (ECs) operating in the province to buy additional load from Therma Marine, Inc. (TMI), a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Group of Companies. The ECs––Misamis Occidental 1 Electric Cooperative (MOELCI 1) and MOELCI 2––have yet to get the “go-ahead” of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in regard to its plan to acquire additional load of 3 megawatts from TMI to cushion the impact of power shortage in Misamis Occidental. Provincial legislators have invited officials of the Napocor and NGCP, including the two ECs, apparently to explain the increasing power load curtailment. Napocor and NGCP representatives admitted they were helpless saying they only rely solely on how the government would address the power shortage following the approval of the Epira Law or the Energy Power Industry Reform Act of 2000 and the establishment of Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management (PSALM). Senior officials of the MOELCI 1 and 2 said they are now asking the ERC to let TMI grant their load contract but said it would mean an additional P1.30 per kilowatt hour increase in electricity. Iway added that the provisional fare hike will be in effect while the LTFRB deliberates on the “main” petition for a P2 fare hike. Last week, daily oil prices reached a record high of 124.59 dollars a barrel. “The market is inconsistent with the oil price trend, which is puzzling,” said Tony Rosado, an analyst at Global Markets. GUA Seafood Restaurant, that Chabacano seafood restaurant at Limketkai Center‘s Rosario Strip , is starting the new year with a new cook, a new look and a new menu. “We’ve decided to focus on Asian Fu s i o n c u i s i n e since our customers want more variety, especially something that’s different from what they’ve tried in other restaurants,” said Lulu Abarado, Agua operations manager. Asian fusion combines the flavors and ingredients of the Pacific Rim into simple yet delicious dishes. Highlighted by fresh ingredients, many Asian fusion recipes are cooked quickly to preserve the fresh flavors of the ingredients in the dishes. Another wonderful aspect of Asian fusion cuisine is its presentation. Agua’s kitchen has combined the colorful ingredients in unique presentations that are not only savory to taste, but pleasing to see and taste as well (view photos in this page). Among the new items one can glean from Agua’s menu are Beef Rendang and Nasi Goreng. Rendang is a spicy meat dish traditionally served during festive occasions around

South East Asia. A 2011 CNNGo online poll joined in by 35,000 online participants chose Rendang as the number 11 dish in their ‘World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods’ list, followed by Nasi Goreng (bagoong rice, popularly known as the national dish of Indonesia). Tom Yam Kung (a Lao and Thai hot and sour soup) ranks eight on the same list. Other new items in Agua’s Asian Fusion menu, albeit not as popular as the first three mentioned, but can hold their own in the ultimate testing ground of the palate include Ginger Clam Soup (a Southern Philippines clam soup spiced with ginger from Zamboanga City, of course); Singapore fish curry (using only LapuLapu fish), Steamed Pompano with Black Beans, Kung Pao fish fillet (a Nonya specialty from Malaysia/ Indonesia), Singapore chili crab, Thai Curry Crab, Hebi Kangkong, Fried Egg Beancurd, Black Pepper and Stir-Fried Seafood Udon, and Mee Goreng (fried

noodles famous in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore). The menu’s not all that’s changed. “ We w a n t t o emphasize that Agua’s prices are now more affordable and popularly priced,” Ms. Abarado stresses. “Orders are now also more rightsized for 3-4 persons. With the right serving size, our menu is now affordably priced.” Agua has also amenities that cater to the corporate and government clientele. Among them, a private dining room that seats 14 people and comes free for four hours with a minimum order and a function room that can seat 25-30 persons and also comes free provided a minimum order is placed from Agua’s set menu which starts at P275 per cover inclusive of four entrees, rice and dessert. Agua opens daily 11AM-2PM, and again at 5:3010:00PM.
