Nuclear plant eyed as solution to power crisis MINDANAO executives and stakeholders welcome plans to construct a nuclear plant in Mindanao in order to address power shortage in the island. Business executives in Kidapawan City and legislators said they would support the construction of a nuclear plant in Mindanao if it could guarantee cheaper electricity cost. “If putting up a nuclear power plant could bring down electricity cost to P2.50 per kilowatt hour, we will support its construction,” stakeholders said. At present, power barges are charging P14.00 per kilowatt-hour which is too expensive, Ramon Floresca, president of the Kidapawan Chamber of Commerce and Industry said. Agham party-list Rep. Angelo Palmones said that ‘ Mindanao subscribes to the
construction of a nuclear plant to liberate the island people from six to eight hours daily blackouts.’ Former Pangasinan Rep. Mark Cojuangco, who authored in the 14th Congress a resolution seeking the revival of the controversial Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP), said local officials in the affected power shortage in Mindanao were convinced that nuclear power plant is the solution to their power problem. He said he met with the governors, congressmen and mayors of Pagadian in Zamboanga, Koronadal, The 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan, the worst nuclear accident General Santos and Davao in 25 years, displaced 50,000 households after radiation leaked into the air, soil del Sur last week and that and sea. Radiation checks led to bans of some shipments of vegetables and fish. NUCLEAR/PAGE 7 SOURCE : WIKIPEDIA . ORG
Group slams energy department QUICK FACTS over expensive power solutions THE Trade Union Congress Party (TUCP) slammed the proposed Department of Energy (DOE) fast-tracking and expedited approval by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) of the pending contracts and tariffs between the Aboitiz-Therma Marine power barges and the electric cooperatives
as anti-consumer. “The TUCP believes that the President is being badly advised by the DOE Secretary. The proposal which involves approval of the generation charge of Aboitiz of P14 per kilowatt hour (kWh) will now pave the way for an expensive tariff regime in Mindanao,”
said TUCP Rep. Raymond Democrito C. Mendoza. Mendoza explained that this will impact only the smaller cities and rural areas serviced by electric cooperatives and not on the largest cities. “We are shocked that this pro-power provider solution SLAMS/PAGE 7

A NUCLEAR power plant (NPP) is a thermal power station in which the heat source is one or more nuclear reactors. As in a conventional thermal power station the heat is used to generate steam which drives a steam turbine connected to a generator which produces electricity. As of February 2, 2012, there were 439 nuclear power plants in operation through the world. Nuclear power plants are usually considered to be base load stations, which are best suited to constant power

output. Electricity was generated by a nuclear reactor for the first time ever on December 20, 1951 at the EBR-I experimental station near Arco, Idaho in the United States. On June 27, 1954, the world’s first nuclear power plant to generate electricity for a power grid started operations at Obninsk, USSR. The world’s first commercial scale power station, Calder Hall in England opened in October 17, 1956. source: wikipedia.org
