Govt, multinational firms plunder environment: NDF By PAT SAMONTE

BUTUAN City––The National Democratic Front has accused the US-Aquino government in collusion with multinational companies for what it described as the continuing plunder and destruction of the environment. As it joined the celebration of the Earth Month, the NDF blamed and held accountable the “imperialist” companies and big landlord-traders for the unregulated and wanton exploitation of the country’s natural resources, whose “only regard is the extraction of the biggest profit.”

It denounced and held liable the Aquino regime as it “offered Mindanao’s resources to these companies on a silver platter without a single concern for the people’s welfare and the environment.” In a press statement, NDF-Mindanao PLUNDER/PAGE 7

Don’t pick passengers, bus management told COTABATO City––Police and military authorities in North Cotabato have asked the management of bus companies operating in North Cotabato to stop the practice of picking up passengers in between bus terminals. The appeal was aired following a powerful blast from improvised explosive device in Carmen, North Cotabato Wednesday morn-

ing that left three dead and 16 others wounded. Supt. Rogelio Salinas, North Cotabato police provincial director and Colonel Benjie Hao, 7th Infantry Battalion commander, made the separate appeal to Rural Transit Bus and Weena Bus company, two bus firms which have been subjected to several bomb attacks by extortion gangs.

Salinas said the suspect in Wednesday morning’s bomb blast was a man who boarded the bus in between Kabacan and Carmen. The man, in his early 30s, disembark before the bus, (body number 2922 and license plate KVS740) reached the Carmen terminal at 10:40 a.m. “We have been asking bus operators to stop the practice of picking up pas-

sengers in between bus terminals to avoid things like these,” Salinas said. Army and police bomb disposal teams, with bombsniffing dogs, have been deployed in bus terminals in North Cotabato, to check on baggage and passengers before allowing the bus to leave. The suspected bomber placed the IED, a 60 mm mortar with mobile phone

as trigger mechanism, at the baggage compartment. Killed were Dima Causing; her daughter, Rona Causing; and Gladzin Himposo, 10 years old. The fatalities who were seated directly above the compar tment suf fered shrapnel injuries in different parts of the body. Wounded were Guirea Danggo, 21, Basilisa Anipot, 45, Marvin Nacional,

PNP retirees draw pensions via ATM Budget Secretary Florencio B. Abad made the announcement after the DBM has succeeded in shifting the release of PNP pension benefit from checks payments to ATM for the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office. “By switching from check to ATM payments, our retired uniformed personnel can gain better and easier access to the benefits due them. Not only does this expedite the process for claiming benefits among pensioners. It is also a definite step toward improving transparency in the pension release system, which used to be rife with irregularities,”

Abad said. He said that coursing pension payments through electronic banking will allow the government to weed out fictitious or ghost entries from the existing pensioner database, as well as prevent the creation of fraudulent accounts. “Through the ATM platform, PNP retirees will need to personally open a bank account in the presence of a bank officer, thus preventing unscrupulous individuals from opening fraudulent accounts. This goes beyond changing to an electronic format to keep up with the times. It’s also about establishing a systematic method so that public funds

are properly managed and will directly benefit their intended recipients,” Abad said. The projected number of retirees from the PNP for 2012 is at 60,049, a figure projected to increase to 66,646 in 2013. Abad added that releasing pension benefits through ATMs is part of the Administration’s commitment to improve the delivery of services to PNP retirees, many of whom depend on their pension for supporting basic expenses, including those incurred for medical care. The budget chief also confirmed that the DBM will soon implement the same changes for other retired uniformed personnel, including those from the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology. Food processors provide opportunities for M’nao farmers by becoming globally competitive DAVAO City—Food processing firms in Mindanao that comply with international food quality and safety requirements are helping to create more livelihood opportunities for the region’s growers. This has been the experience of several companies that have acquired HACCP (hazard analysis and critical control point) certification with assistance from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). HACCP, a systematic, preventive approach to food safety and quality that limits potential physical, chemical and biological hazards in food production, is increasingly becoming a standard requirement for export markets. Food processors which are HACCP-certified generally see a jump in the number of interested buyers from other countries. To fill the growing demand for their products, these firms source additional raw materials from farmer-suppliers. “The buyers who at one time would not even return my calls, are now buying products following our HACCP certification,” said Helen del Rosario of Soyuz Foods, a processor of na-

JPMorgan’s PH unit is top BPO taxpayer HOUSE Deputy Majority Leader Roman Romulo has cited a unit of global financial services giant JPMorgan Chase & Co. for emerging as the largest taxpayer among business process outsourcing (BPO) firms operating in the Philippines. The New York, NY-based financial holding company’s in-house worldwide service center in Manila is listed as the No. 1 taxpayer among BPO providers in the Philippines, according to Romulo, who represents the lone district of Pasig City in Congress. JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A.-Philippine Global Service Center paid P139.65 million in taxes on gross sales of P8.75 billion in 2010. It ranked No. 158 overall among the top 500 Philippine corporate taxpayers, based on a list released by the Bureau of Internal Revenue. The service center has a workforce of more than 9,000 in offices at the Net Plaza in Taguig City and Asiatown IT Park in Cebu City. The center provides strategic back office support to JPMorgan’s lines of business and clients around the

world, including analytics, finance, accounting, voicebased customer services, research, IT assistance, training and many other functions. “That a BPO entity has advanced as a leading corporate taxpayer is testament to how huge our outsourcing industry has grown,” said Romulo, a key backer of the sector. Romulo is author of the proposed Data Privacy Act, which is expected to further drive outsourcing to Manila. The bill mandates both public and private entities, such as a BPO company, to protect the integrity and confidentiality of any personal information collected from their clients, in adherence to international privacy standards. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives

hopes it will soon be signed into law,” Romulo said. He said the two chambers are set to reconcile their versions of the bill before it is sent to Malacañang for President Aquino’s signature. The BPO industry is projected to produce $25 billion in revenues and fully engage some 1.3 million Filipino have already passed the workers by 2016. tion in 2010. KF Nutri Foods, which exports processed banana chips, sources much of its fruit supply from conflictaffected areas in Mindanao. “The Cardaba banana from which we make our chips is not a plantation crop but is grown on small farms,” added Fernandez. “Farmers now have more options for selling,” said Isidro Ang, vice president of Martsons Food Corporation, which sells tropical fruit products such as dried mango, pineapple and papaya, as well as fruit juices and aseptic purees. Mar tsons is one of fifteen Mindanao firms, all small-to-medium enterprises, which have acquired HACCP certification through the assistance of USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, which is implemented under the oversight of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA). USAID helps companies to develop the systems and procedures needed for HACCP-compliance, which must be audited and certified by TUV-SUD, an internationally recognized quality management agency based in Germany. The companies shoulder part of the consultancy and certification fees involved, as well as the costs of developing or upgrading of

their existing plant facilities as needed. Depending on the individual company, HACCP requirements may include building renovations, reconfiguring of assembly lines, training of workers, and introduction of monitoring and documentation systems. HACCP certification is a major undertaking but companies like Martsons, which already exports to Asian countries and North America, believe that the investment is worth it. “HACCP is demanded by our customers,” Ang said. ”This will allow us to enter new markets.” “The growing competitiveness of Mindanao’s food processors has multiplier effects along the supply chain,” said Fernandez of KF Nutri Foods, who notes that even small produce traders are able to take advantage of the new market opportunities. Foreseeing increased demand and trying to create economies of scale, Del Rosario of Soyuz Foods has begun training some of her farmer-suppliers to semi-process native lime (calamansi). She is also experimenting with new uses for her products, and says, “there is nothing to prevent even small-scale entrepreneurs like us from engaging in research and development.”

Don’t sweat the small stuff THINK a minute. You know that many arguments between husbands and wives are not over important things? Couples often “sweat the small stuff.” Sometimes the smallest mistake sets off our temper and we fire off angry, hurtful words to blame our wife or husband for the silliest thing. Maybe your husband forgot to pick the kids up early from school, or he didn’t hear something you said. Your wife made you a little late to work, or she ironed the wrong shirt. Little mistakes and oversights suddenly set off World War III in our home and ruin the whole day, not to mention our poor kids who have to listen to our childish fighting all the time.

Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst But if we don’t change this bad habit of fighting with our wife or husband over every little mistake, we’ll enjoy being with each other less and less. And eventually, we could end up resenting each other so much that we prefer to be with almost anyone else besides our own wife or husband. It’s easy for us to laugh at how silly and ridiculous other couples sound when

they fight over small things, but we ourselves need to learn to laugh at our own silly fights. Then forget it and let it go! It’s not worth the stress, even pain, that we cause each other. We all enjoy being with someone who’s patient and doesn’t get angry easily. We don’t like to be with people who are hard to please and stress us out. So if we want others to love and accept us with our mistakes,

then we also need to be that kind of person with our own wife or husband. Just imagine how much more you’ll enjoy your marriage if you decide today that being happy is far more important than being stubborn and always wanting things your way. So why not ask Jesus Christ to forgive you for your bad habit and attitude of arguing with your wife or husband over small, unimportant things? Just ask Jesus to take charge of your heart and marriage. He’s the only One Who can help you stop “sweating the small stuff,” so you can start changing and enjoying life with your mate by focusing on the big stuff. Just Think a Minute.

Friday the 13th, why chance it? The fear of the number 13 dates back in the days of Christ and the Apostles. BEWARE, it’s Friday the 13th! Old wives tales, superstitious, taboos, and unlucky things are associated with the number 13. People Cris Diaz have lived their lives fearing that on that fateful day unfortunate things would befall on them. The fear of the number 13 has its history as ancient as the days of Jesus Christ. There was a belief that, Judas Escariot, the Apostle who betrayed Christ in exchanged of Silver, was the last and the 13th Apostle to come during the Last Supper. Since then, 13 have been associated with bad luck. That belief continues to persist for centuries. In the middle Ages, King Philip of France rounded up the revered Knights of Templar on 13th of Friday in 1306. King Philip tortured and executed the highly respected group of Knights of Templar believing that they have gone too powerful. In the British tradition, Friday was the day set for hanging criminals sentenced to death. The condemned criminal has to walk 13th steps leading to the noose where he is hanged in public view. Today, the superstition of the ‘unlucky 13’ is entrenched in various cultures and traditions of many

countries. Skyscrapers and towers skipped the 13th floor, going straight from 12 to 14th floor. Airlines avoid number 13 in the rows of airplane sets, on arrival and on departure gates. People make sure that the number 13, particularly Friday the 13th, is not chosen as calendar date to transfer to a new residential house, planning for wedding and other important events to ensure safety and avoid bad luck. Superstitious has a short list of things to counter the curse of bad luck associated with the number 13. Old wives folks had it that having a haircut on the 13 would mean losing a loved one on the same year. That giving birth on the 13 would mean a lifetime bad luck for the baby. One should also add a nickname to names with 13 letters. The fear of the number 13, especially Friday the 13th, has influenced many people’s habit that they often refused to work on that day. As a precautionary, people stay at home and let the day passed. Some year has only one Friday the 13th. In 2008, Friday the 13th occurred only once on June 13. In 2009, Friday the 13th occurred thrice - on February 13, March 13 and November 13, 2009. This year, another triple Friday the 13th will take place. The first was on January 13, second on April 13 and the third on July 13, 2012. There is no scientific proof that the dual superstition 13 and Friday the 13th brings bad luck or accident. It could be said that the fear of Friday the 13th is based solely on traditional fear and superstitions. However, why chance it? Be careful it’s Friday the 13th. React: crisguardian@yahoo.com

The Philippines and America OUR country has successfully removed the American bases some years ago. It was really bad news to the Americans but because the Philippine Senate was strong enough to manipulate things, the country utterly kicked out the bases. Indeed it was a bad matter to many Filipinos living and making all kinds of businesses in and out of the bases. Thousands of Filipino businessmen and entertainers were dislocated and found themselves one morning without cash. America did not show anger. It was still friendly and smiling even if the matter was too big to feel nice. They dismantled things that they needed and brought them elsewhere. Those that are not usable to them like

Until today, a lot of Filipinos are enjoying business where Clark Airbase was. And in some other areas too left by the Americans. The large airport is being used now as alternate of international flights.

Despite the heartaches that developed in the departure of bases, life went on and the good relations of the American government and the Philippines remained undisturbed. The latter sent troops to the country and be ready to engage battle against anyone who think the Spratleys is a small matter. Until now American troops are arriving in our country and many more are stationed in nearby Singapore and other Asian countries. And when North Korea recently declared it will shoot missiles into orbit, the Philippines think it will endanger the country especially when debris of all sorts may drop in our territory. These are not my boots It was the usual muddy day in the country. The first grade teacher, ‘Miss Brown’, had just finished putting the 36th boot on the 18th pair of little feet and was anxious to finish the last pair so she could go to lunch. The last pair of boots was for little Johnny. Miss Brown had a very difficult time getting his boots on as they were a bit too small for his growing feet, but she finally won the battle. To her dismay, little Johnny looked blandly up into her face and announced, “Teacher, these boots aren’t mine.” In a hurry, but wanting to be kind, Miss Brown groaned, but with grim gentleness removed the boots and straightened her aching back. Whereupon Johnny continued, “They’re my little brother’s, but Mommy said I could wear them to school today.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT We live on earth full of trials, but by the grace of God, we remain standing like trees. Even if the leaves are falling, still there are new leaves of hope waiting. When we feel being poisoned by stress, pain, pressure and failures, the best antidote is to pray. Nothing more, nothing less. You have never tested God’s resources until you have attempted the impossible! (Photojournalist Joey Nacalaban)

Derek Ramsay reveals why he moved to TV5 By ERIC RAMOS, InterAksyon.com TV5 won Derek Ramsay, the actor, because it talked to Derek Ramsay, the athlete. That, in essence, is why the British-Filipino hunk chose to leave ABS-CBN and became the latest major star to cast his lot with the Kapatid Network. “This is most definitely, hands down, the biggest decision I’ve made in my career,” Derek told Interaksyon.com Tuesday afternoon when he formally signed a three-year pact with TV5. His first project is not a soap opera as one would expect from the leading man of the two biggest blockbuster movies last year, “Praybeyt Benjamin” and “No Other Woman.” Instead, he will host Amazing Race Philippines, the debut of TV5’s local franchise of the international reality game show. And in August, he will be part of the TV5 coverage team for the 2012 London Olympics, the return of “the greatest show on earth” to his native England after 64 years. “I just compared the offers from both networks,” Derek said, “and the projects being offered by TV5 was really close to my passion, which is sports, as well as travel and adventure.” He says he wrestled with the decision for five to six months, taking “continuous meetings with my family and my handlers at ABS.” In the end, it was never about money.“I didn’t make any financial demands from

I won’t be a diva. Just give me what you think I’m worth.’” Derek did consult his girlfriend of six years, Angelica Panganiban, another major contract star of ABSCBN, but he says, “She didn’t influence me one way or another. “She just said kahit saan ka pumunta, hindi naman magbabago relationship natin.” Derek made his his last public appearance as an ABS-CBN talent on March 30 when he joined the Star Magic concert in Hawaii. He did not discuss his impending transfer to TV5 with any of his colleagues. “I wanted to keep it between me and my family,” he explained. “My friends in ABS, they’re still going to be my friends. The hard-hitting Filipino controlled their semifinal fight in the Asian Olympic Qualifying Event at the Daulet Stadium here as he led in the first round, 4-3, poured it on in round 2 at 13-8 and sealed the victory with a final score of 24-11. “I really want this badly. I have trained long and hard and I have forsaken time with family and friends to focus on my Olympic dream. Liu Qiang of China is a slick fighter but my coaches and I are developing a strategy for him,” beamed the Sawata, San Isidro, Davao del Norte native. Suarez came from a successful stint with the Mumbai Fighters of India in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), the semi-professional league organized by the world governing body for amateur boxing, the International Boxing Federation (AIBA).

A member of the national pool for eight years now, Suarez said he and his coaches have been studying the styles of all the boxers in his category. “We concentrated on defense and speed. Daisuke likes to come in and deliver his power blows. I waited in ambush for him and his punches landed on my arms while I feinted with straights and countered with hooks and uppercuts,” he said. “Charly has beefed up, developed more stamina and more importantly, gained much more confidence after the WSB stint,” commented Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson, delegation head here. Picson said the fights in the WSB go five rounds, compared to the amateurs’ three rounds. “They also don’t wear headguards and vests,” he said.

Suarez’s semifinals win came on the heels of the appointment of ABAP president Ricky Vargas as honorary vice president of the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC). “This is my gift to boss Ricky for his election as vice president. I hope to win again tomorrow,” said the dusky boxer with a quick smile, who has gained adulation from Kazakh boxing

fans for his swash-buckling ways in the WSB. Suarez is mentored here by coaches Nolito and Roel Velasco and Ronald Chavez. His finals match with China’s Liu Qiang is set Thursday. sp okesp ers on Jorge Madlos alias Ka Oris gave contrasting pictures of Mindanao, which is endowed with fertile lands, great rivers, rich fishing grounds and one of the biggest mineral deposits in the world, yet, its people “suffer from abject misery and poverty” and the island remains “as one of the poorest, most backward and most ecologically degraded areas” in the country. According to Madlos, calamities had occurred in Mindanao and it was the masses who bore the brunt of their fury. He cited Typhoon Sendong that recently hit Mindanao in which he said scientists and experts have pointed to agribusiness plantations owned by Dole, Del Monte and Sumifru in Bukidnon as “accountable” for the flashflood and mudslide that killed thousands of people in Cagayan de Oro. He also blamed “wanton logging” in Lanao del Sur for the devastation of communities in Iligan City as a result of the release of thousands of logs and timber into the rivers. Madlos put to task President Aquino, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and other agencies for the government “has not done anything decisive” in stopping indiscriminate logging that have denuded the forests and degraded the watersheds in Cotabato, Agusan and Davao provinces because of “corruption, which is inherent in this regime.” The NDF spokesperson condemned the mining industry in which he said the US-Aquino regime has sponsored and continuously welcomed foreign largescale mining companies like Xstrata-SMI, Taganito Taganito-HPAL-Sumitomo, SRMI, Toronto Ventures, Russell Mining, and BHP Billiton which, he said, will “surely, and, irreversibly, destroy our mountains, our rivers, our farms and the lives of people” to extract gold, copper, nickel, coal and other resources in all mineral rich areas in Mindanao. Madlos said the National Democratic Revolution has mandated the NDF and the revolutionary forces to “preserve and protect our patrimony” and warned that the New People’s Army reserves the right “to conduct punitive measures against recalcitrant” companies which do not heed the revolutionary movement’s policies on the protection of the environment and natural wealth.

Als o, Tigbao p olice station has only 23 policemen and is the second smallest police station, in terms of strength, in the province of Zamboanga del Sur. Major Gen. Noel Coballes of the Western Mindanao command immediately ordered the deployment of troops to assist the police in pursuing the fleeing rebels––and to ensure the safe release of captured policeman. “ T h e Ne w Pe o p l e’s Army raid of the Tigbao police station is no cause for alarm. It is a case of simple robber y with kidnapping. of dreaded diseases to include tuberculosis (TB) and hepatitis, among others. Under the measure, no person shall carelessly or intentionally spit saliva, phlegm, mucus or other substances in public places such as the city streets, alleys, sidewalks, parks, markets, public halls, malls, buildings, terminals, schools, churches, hospitals and other similar public places. C it i n g a re p or t of World Health Organization (WHO), Magsaysay said the number of deaths due to TB stands at an average of 75 Filipinos every day and is contagious and airborne. “According to the WHO, the Philippines has a long way to go in eradicating TB even if the Department of Health confidently announced that the country will be able to attain the millennium development goal of reducing TB deaths by 50% within five years or 2015,” Magsaysay said. “Mycobacterism tubercolosis, the bacteria which causes TB, can survive in a dried state for weeks up

to eight months. Spitting has been identified as one of the factors in the spread of TB,” Magsaysay said. Under the bill, persons caught spitting in public places face a jail term of 6 months and shall be slapped with a fine of P500 for first offense; P1,000.00) for the second offense; and P2,000 for the third offense. The violator is also required to attend a health seminar conducted by the Department of Health in coordination with local health units. “While anti-spitting laws have been in existence in a number of jurisdictions like Singapore, India, Malaysia, and China, only Davao City has vigorously implemented a similar law in the country since 2010,” Magsaysay said. Magsaysay said Metro Manila mayors approved a resolution prohibiting spitting in public places as a means to combat Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), but no significant change happened since its implementation. Magsaysay said there is a need for more healthrelated legislation to achieve an integrated and comprehensive approach to health development.

it is terribly a violation of our sovereignty. Again, President Benigno Aquino III asked for help from the USA to defend our country against North Korea’s unreasonable firing of its missile. Aquino became tough and talking harsh against

North Korea as if he knows well what is going on. You can feel so easy the friendship of the USA. It is ready to win or lose in any war to protect the Philippines whatever is the reason. To the Americans, the Philippines is a friend thus they are ready to shed blood for our cause. It is really beautiful, a relationship we did not give so much honor before and until now. Surely there is embarrassments to Filipinos residing in the USA on the issue of the American bases which were kicked out for no good reasons at all. I was one of those Pinoys who could not look up direct to the eyes of the Americans. And being here, we were never harassed, look down as people, insulted or whatever negative result of the bases pull out. Until now we feel America is indeed a real friend ever ready to help the naughty Philippines. You can now read the electronic edition of Mindanao Daily News via the world wide web. Just log on to:

BUTUAN City––A Starex van ran over, dragged and killed an unidentified motorcyclist who fell on the road pavement after overtaking two other motorized bikes in Barangay Victory, Tubay, Agusan del Norte on Tuesday. PO3 Edmundo Masambo reported the incident to Tubay police which immediately dispatched a team to the scene. Police authorities said

that around 8:30 pm, the motorcycle driver overtook two other motorcycles as he sped toward Tubay town. He, however, lost control of his vehicle and fell on the road pavement of the opposite lane while the Starex van driven by Rev. Evarie Sabuga-a was approaching. The van ran over the unidentified victim and dragged him, police said. The victim was rushed

to Cabadbaran Emergency Hospital where he died on arrival. His remains were later brought to Juni Funeral Parlor in Cabadbaran City. Sabuga-a told police he “was not able to evade (the victim) because of the suddenness of the incident” as he turned himself in. Police were still conducting follow-up investigation to determine the identity of the victim as appropriate charges were prepared against Sabuga-a.
