IGBALALAY HILLS
Home of Our Lady of
Guadalupe Text and photos by JOE PALABAO
IGBALALAY hills––surrounded by beautiful and mesmerizing mountains, lush green meadows, and trees––is home of the miraculous Mother Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe. Since 1987, Igbalalay hills has become a place of prayer for the devotees of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A place where they find peace, solace, consolation, and answered prayers––be it material need, health, good wishes for jobs, passing examinations, good business, spiritual nourishment, and communing with nature. Six years ago, 2006 to be exact, every Lenten and Easter Season, Igbalalay Hills has become a famous religious pilgrimage site wherein thousands and thousands of devotees pay homage to Our Lady of Guadalupe––and along the way, do the “Station of the Cross.” Starting Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, Holy Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Black Saturday and Easter Sunday, thousands and thousands of devotees trek a four-kilometer stretch
way up to Igbalalay Hills crossing nine times the same river tributaries of Tablon River and Agusan River. It will take an hourand-half to two hours for devotees to reach the pilgrimage site. Each Station of the Cross is found at the embankment of every river crossing. From the Kandilaan site, a devotee has to cross the first river traversing to the first Station of the Cross up to the nine and the last river crossing at the foot of Igbalalay hills and walk another 500 meters up the hill using the hundred unique upward steps to reach the chapel, the home of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Going back home can never be a problem as devotees may choose the “river tubing,” a 30 to 45 minutes ride downstream of the river. Holy Week 2012 Unlike the previous
Lenten Season, devotees felt more secured this year with the presence of policemen and the Philippine Air Force. Of course, the credit goes to the officers and memberts of Our Lady of Guadalupe Devotees Association, Inc. Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel caretaker brod Boy Estoque and association President Cesar Aparicio
said they have requested the presence of policemen and air force personnel to secure the area. Medics are also visible in the area. Ropes are used to guide the devotees from one end to another end of the river for safety. Aside from the Red Cross, the city government of Cagayan de Oro, and the Philippine Eagle Fraternal Association were also present at the pilgrimage site. Silver anniversary In an interview, Brod Boy Estoque told BusinessWeek Mindanao that Igbalalay hills, the home of Our Lady
mous project for the Better Glory of God by building this grandiose chapel extension during its 25th annual founding day. Devotees are invited to visit the site and see the caretaker, Brod Boy Estoque, for more information.
of Guadalupe, will be celebrating its 25th Year Silver Anniversary since it was founded by him in 1987 with the Parish of the Holy Rosary of Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City. Preparations are on the way for the big celebration during its Fiesta Celebration on December 11-12, 2012. One preparation is the proposed chapel extension of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This as the Our Lady of Guadalupe Devotees Association, Inc. (ILOGDA) urged kind-hearted devotees from all over Mindanao for support to such a magnani-

Tornado wipes 25 houses in Parang, Maguindanao CAMP SK PENDATUN, Maguindanao – A freak tornado hit a coastal communities Thursday in Parang, Maguindanao, damaging at least 25 houses and sending people running for their lives. Village official Abubakar Abdul of Barangay Polloc, Parang, Maguindanao, said the tornado hit the residential areas at about 3 p.m. as dark clouds accompanied by thunderstorm covered the northern part of Maguindanao. “We thought it was just an ordinary downpour but the very strong wind almost wipe out the whole coastal village,” Abdul said. Three sitios (sub-villages) were affected and about 26 families left homeless. Their houses were made of light materials and were taken away by strong winds. Nobody was hurt since most of the family of fisher folks have ran for safety when they saw the tornado coming, according to Abdul. The affected families are now temporary housed in the village center and day care center building. The local government of Parang has sent social workers to validate the number of families affected by the calamity. ‘Know your enemy’ THINK a minute. In a war rule number one is you must know who you’re fighting. Otherwise, you’ll waste a lot of time and energy fighting the wrong enemy. Our life’s daily struggles are like a battle. But many times the enemy we’re fighting is right inside our own mind! Nothing can defeat and damage your life more than your own wrong thinking about yourself. If you believe that you’re not smart or don’t have any special abilities, then you’ll never succeed in life because that’s just how you’ll live. We become whatever we think we are—even if it’s not true to begin with. That’s why the Bible says:
Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst “As a man thinks about himself, so is that man.” Your low self-confidence will limit and paralyze you. You may actually have many abilities, but if you don’t believe you have them, then you’ll never use them and benefit from them. In zoos, a baby elephant is tied with a strong, thick chain to a big post. At first, the elephant pulls and tries to get free from the chain. But finally
it gives up and stops trying. After that, only a small, thin rope is needed to tie that big, powerful elephant down and stop it from moving far. The rest of its life, that elephant believes the lie and illusion that it’s too weak to break that little rope. You see, we all can become a bit like that elephant. If I let myself think and believe that I cannot go any further in life, even
though it’s not true, then I won’t. That’s the power my own mind and wrong thinking about myself can have over my life. Friend, if you realize that you’ve been holding yourself back from living the successful life God created you for—because of your own wrong thinking about yourself, your own fears and lack of self-confidence, you can change your mind about yourself today. Just ask Jesus Christ to take full charge of your thinking and way of living. Jesus is the One Who can show you the abilities and potential He’s given you. The two reportedly talked about local politics. With local politics, brewing in preparation for the midterm election next year, talks about politics is usual these days. After the two met, words circulated that Moreno would formally Cris Diaz declare his intention to run for the mayoral seat in Cagayan de Oro on Wednesday. That the pronouncement was to honor Koko’s suggestion for Moreno to declare his mayoral candidacy under an LPUNA alliance. Everybody expect Moreno’s announcement. It did not happen. With the supposed pronouncement that did not take place, mongers feast on the Pimentel-Moreno meeting. There were varied interpretations of the alleged meeting. Someone circulated talks that Pimentel will support Moreno’s mayoral bid in the city. Others also insisted that Pimentel would work that the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) would not coalesce with the local ‘Padayon Pilipino.’ As a political organization, ‘Padayon’ is lead by Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano. Sen. Koko Pimentel reportedly became restless with the insinuation that ‘Padayon’ and UNA would coalesce in the 2013 elections. Some suspected that the Moreno and Koko Pimentel meeting last week also explored the possibility of an LP-UNA alliance in Cagayan de Oro. That being one of the PDP-Laban stalwarts, UNA respects Koko Pimentel’s recommendation on political matters. Koko ran for the Senate in the 2007 senatorial
election under the PDP-Laban ticket. Koko joined the 15th Congress when he won a protest against his closest rival-candidate Miguel Zubiri of Lakas-Kampi-CMD political party. Finally winning a seat in the Senate, many share the opinion that Koko could wield influence with UNA. Thanks to his father, former Sen. Aquilino Pimentel, Jr., considered as one of the founding members of PDP-Laban. However, some political observers doubt Koko’s capability to influence UNA these days. If Koko exercises greater influence at PDP-Laban, the coalition with PMP would not be that easy. They said that the Pimentels’ no longer hold influence with the Binay led PDP-Laban otherwise; the PDP-Laban-PMP merger would not have taken place. Perhaps, this observation is true since the elder Sen. Pimentel announced in 2010 that he was no longer a member of the Binay-led PDP-Laban. At that time, the elder Pimentel was supporting Sen. Manny Villar, the presidential standard-bearer of the Nacionalista Party. It was just normal then since Pimentel’s daughter Gwendolyn Pimentel was one of NP’s senatorial bet. Aside from this, there were also hints that Sen. Koko Pimentel has now allied with the ruling Liberal Party (LP). On the other hand, Moreno, being an LP candidate, is aware that he was one of the prosecutors of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who was instrumental in ousting President Estrada in 2000. For Moreno, the idea of an LP-UNA coalition in Cagayan de Oro City is cumbersome. Perhaps, this is the reason Moreno withheld his announcement to run for city mayor last Wednesday. Did Moreno betray Koko Pimentel? React: crisguardian@yahoo.com
To tithe or not to tithe THE earth and everything in it belongs to the Lord. However in Genesis 1:29. The Lord gave Adam every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it, as food. (Leviticus 27:30) “A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. The main purpose of tithing in the Old Testament was to provide for the priestly tribe of Levi (Num 18:21), who had no land inheritance (Num 18:24). They were to perform their duties as priests and in return they were fed by the tithe, which was also
Ang Bag-ong Tawo Alex A. Podador itself tithed to the Lord (Num 18:26). Under the New Testament system, each believer is a priest (Exodus 19:6). However it is reasonable and, as we shall see, scriptural for those who are members of a local church to help support those who work full-time with church duties. It is also possible for those in leadership to support
themselves, like the apostle Paul who used tent making to support himself. However Paul also said: (1 Corinthians 9:14 ) “In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.” ( Mat 10:10, Luke 10:8) (1 Cor 9:11-14) “If we have sown spiritual seed
among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ. Don’t you know that those who work in the temple get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel”. We should note that the disciples Jesus sent out only got food and shelter,

Davao cacao farmers target 100,000 tons of export demand DAVAO City––Cacao farmers here in the region are bent on reaching the 100,000 tons of cacao demand needed by the global chocolate leader, Mars. Cacao farmer Charita Puentespina disclosed in today’s Club 888 the struggles of the local cacao producers in order to reach the target demand by its chocolate partner. “ It was in 2008 that the cacao industry started to rise up as Mars Chocolate found our cacao having the exact quality that importers need,” Puentespina said. When Davao cacao farmers started exporting to Mars, other importers and traders from Europe and the Netherlands followed suit. “The demand was so high that we felt the need to consolidate. Fortunately, a non-government agency such as ACDI-VOCA helped us organize ourselves, look for other cacao farmers to consolidate our produce.” she said. At present 10,000 hectares of land in the country are planted with cacao. Seventy percent of the national production comes from Davao Region. Data showed that cacao production reached an alltime high of 40,000 tons in the mid 80s but got lost in the coming years due to the problem on quality and shipping cost. Not until an international buyer of cacao discovered the potentials of cacao beans produced in the Davao Region. Kaamulan Tree Park: an evergreen nature garden By RUBY LEONORA R. Its proximity to the center of the city makes it an ideal place for trail hiking, sightseeing and nature trekking. nothing more. Most people will recognize that it is better to have a leader who can devote himself fulltime to the work. The tithe or ten percent is a good rule of thumb. We should give ten percent, save ten percent and do what we like with the rest. If we did this we would probably all be better off since it would encourage us to budget and instead of taking out expensive loans we could buy things out of our savings. Incidentally, if we lend to the Lords people we should not charge interest. Our attitude towards money is like a barometer to how close our walk with God actually is. When we become Christians we receive forgiveness of sins, acceptance by God, love from God. We are clearly on the receiving end of things. One aspect of loving one another is to meet the needs of another. Love is practical not theoretical. (Mat 6:24-34) “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?” “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. When we understand the value of eternal things we can let go of those temporal things we hold so precious.

Puentespina narrated the interest of Mars Cocoa in helping out the farmers’ association to transfer knowledge to those interested of engaging into cacao
production. In May, the farmers’ association will open the Cacao Information and Development Center where farmers and even those non farmers but interested to learn could avail of the technology transfer seminar as well as the knowledge upgrading about the industry. Experts will be teaching students techniques and ways for proper cacao production. The said center is also envisioned to have its processing plant where value-adding of the product will be maximized. The center is also targeted to come up with a database in which target beneficiaries could make do with it as they plan to engage into this kind of industry.(PIA 11/Frances Mae Gevera-Macapagat)

Run4Home, though a Globe initiative, can only be made successful with the help of our partner beneficiaries, subscribers, and communities,” shared Globe Corporate Communications Head Yoly C. Crisanto. “The P335,000 raised for the beneficiaries is truly a successful milestone that everyone who participated
deserves credit for.” Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama graced the event. Support from all sectors of the community poured in with participants’ ages ranging from 4 to 72 years old. The annual charity fun run gathered the running community of Cebu led by Cebu luminaries Yong and Donna Larrazabal, multiawarded triathlete Noy Jopson and wife Amale, and Biggest Loser Pinoy edition finalist Alan Choachuy. Breast cancer survivors headed by Mary Anne Solomon, President of the Outdoor Advertising of the Philippines Cebu Chapter, said the event is worth supporting in every way. “We joined and were greatly inspired by the past years’ races in Manila and having this year’s in Cebu, all I can say is, why only now?” she said. OAAP also pledged P50,000 to the beneficiaries of the event. Solomon, also a president of breast cancer awareness group Icanserve Foundation and Rotary Club, donated advertising space to the event and encouraged members of her numerous associations to participate.
