BUTUAN City––President Benigno Aquino III has blinked in an apparent turnaround on his decision to privatize the Agus and Pulangi hydroelectric power plants as concerned sectors in North Cotabato were planning a massive protest action over a worsening power shortfall in the province and in wide areas of Mindanao. Mindanao Development Authority chief Luwalhati Antonino announced that President Aquino had changed his mind and will not push through with the privatization of the hydro-

electric power plants. In a report by InquirerMindanao’s Aquiles Zonio, Antonino said the President now believes that selling the government-owned power plants would be illegal as

doing so would violate the Electric Industry Reform Act or EPIRA law. Instead, the President has created the Mindanao Power Committee as think tank and oversight body in

OZAMIZ City––At least 325 male children were benefitted by the circumcision services of the city government in Barangay Carmen here. Held under the program “Barangay Nova: Tuli Edition,” the activity was participated in by 11 barangays from the central section of the city.

Bayani challenge

ILIGAN City––“Iliganons are not solely victims of Tropical Storm Sendong. They also help in building their community and they know their worth,” said June Joson, chief of staff, who represented the Undersecretary for Special Concerns of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) in his speech at the “Bayani Challenge 2012” culmination program in Sta. Elena multi-purpose gymnasium. Bayani Challenge is held during summer, specifically in the month of April. For preparations, the Radio-and-TV Malacanang covers the event. Iligan City has been identified already to host this year’s Bayani Challenge even before the calamity occurred.

Vice President Jejomar Binay exchanges thoughts with Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano during the former’s recent visit in the city. Binay is expected to arrive today (April 27) to grace the turnover of more housing units for the Sendong survivors who are temporarily staying in the tent city. Some 1,500 units will be turned over during the occasion with President Noynoy Aquino leading the ceremony. Photo by Gerry L. Gorit

preparation for the turnover of the hydro-power complex’s management from the National Power Corporation (Napocor), Antonino was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, different sectors in North Cotabato are planning to stage “a day of mourning” to manifest their indignation over the power crisis that has greatly affected the province’s economy. and Pames Campilan. Police investigation showed that the gunman appeared at around 1:30 p.m. and without provocation shot Cervantes and Campilan who sustained gunshot wounds all over.

Co-workers rushed the victims to D.O. Plaza Memorial Hospital in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur where they are now confined. Investigators have yet to identify the suspect. A report from Pat Samonte and Joel Portugal

KIDAPAWAN City––Power consumers in North Cotabato, most of them small and medium traders, have expressed dismay over the latest pronouncement of the Cotabato Electric Cooperative (Cotelco) that the daily eight-hour rotating brownout would not end soon. “We were assured we would get over this crisis, but it seems forever,” said trader Bernard Capilitan from Kidapawan City. Augusto Sanoy, a tricycle driver from Barangay Singao here, said he is spending much from buying candles and kerosene gas to light his home when blackout strikes from 5 p.m. until 8

p.m. everyday. During day time, power is off from 7 a.m. until 12 noon. In an interview over Catholic-ran DXND, Cotelco spokesman Vincent Baguio blamed the refusal of the Therma Marine, Inc., (TMI) to allow Cotelco to draw electricity from their power barge located at Maco, Compostela Valley. “The TMI is charging Cotelco too high. Aside from that, they demand that we pay them in advance for the power we have not yet consumed,” said Baguio. The TMI, according to Baguio, is set to charge Cotelco P16.11 per kilowatt of ENRAGE/PAGE 7
