‘No war in Mindanao’ By BONG D. FABE, Contributing editor
CAGAYAN de Oro City––Acting Governor Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) yesterday morning appealed for calm and sobriety in posting unverified reports in social media sites regarding the attacks in several front in the Moro region. At the same time, the Macapado Muslim, president of the Mindanao State University System (MSUS)
denied imposing Martial Law inside the campus in the Islamic City of Marawi following last night’s am-
bush by lawless elements on a military truck going inside the campus that killed 3 soldiers and injured 10 civilians. “There is no truth to the information circulating on Twitter, Facebook and social media which allege that war has allegedly broken out in Mindanao. Please refrain from sharing and posting similar information so as not to cause undue panic,” Hataman said in a statement
posted on facebook. He said that the Armed Forces of the Philippines have already contained the group of Ustadz Ameril Umra Kato, leader of the breakaway Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) which attacks 11 municipalities in Maguindanao and North Cotabato since Sunday. While 103rd Infantry Brigade commander Col. Daniel Lucero did not iden-
tify the perpetrators of last night’s ambush in Marawi, Hataman said it was the handiwork of “syndicate groups.” “Last night’s attack to a contingent of the military conducting mobile patrol in Mindanao State University in Marawi City is a handiwork of syndicate groups. Security and law enforcement operations are ongoing,” he said. Hataman said these syn-
dicates are possible “drug syndicates” operating inside the MSU campus. “The Regional Government will definitely flex its muscles to clamp down these people who use the academic institution as a haven of their illegal business while destroying lives of our people,” he added. He said that instead of causing panic and hamper government operations WAR/PAGE 11
Army, police hunt down ambushers of soldiers in Marawi COTABATO City––The Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade has launched a massive manhunt against a band of bandits who ambushed a military vehicle in Marawi City Wednesday night that left four soldiers dead and 10 others wounded. Three other civilians were hurt in the attack that occurred at about 9:30 p.m. near the Mindanao State University (MSU) campus in Marawi City.
“We are pursuing them, we know them pretty well,” Colonel Daniel Lucero, 10rd Infantry Brigade chief, said. According to Lucero, the attackers were possibly members of gun-for-hire or loyalists of crooked politicians who were caught trying to register fake voters. “Or they could be people who are not happy with our presence in the city or possibly those involved in drug trafficking,” Lucero said.
He said the ambushers opened fire at military personnel who were deployed around MSU campus to protect students who spoke against registration irregularities last July 9-18. The three wounded civilians were on board a private vehicle following the Army truck and were hit by stray bullets. Lucero withheld the name of the slain soldiers POLICE/PAGE 11
