In a report on its website, the agency is said to carry the task of maintaining a nationwide network pertaining to observation and forecasting of weather and other climatological conditions affecting national safety, welfare and economy. It also undertakes activi-
ties relative to observation, collection, assessment and processing of atmospheric and allied data for the benefit of agriculture, commerce and industry. The agency is also tasked to engage in studies of geophysical and astronomical phenomena essential to the safety and welfare of the people; as well as undertake researches on the structure, development and motion of typhoons and formulate measures for their moderation. Another heavy function of Pagasa is to maintain linkages with local and international scientific organizations and promote exchange of scientific information and cooperation among personnel engaged in atmospheric,
geophysical and astronomical studies. For all intents and purposes, however, Gaite said even as Pagasa has a Modernization Law and a Magna Carta for employees, both remained unfunded and ultimately useless. Gaite said that besides pushing for benefits for state workers, Courage continues to actively campaign for a a P6,000 ($142) increase in their minimum pay. DIGOS City––The Provincial Health Office (PHO) here has been alarmed by the number of residents ill with malaria in three villages of Jose Abad Santos (JAS) town in the Second District of Davao del Sur recently. PHO malaria and dengue control coordinator Riza Dacalos identified the villages affected by malaria rash as Mangulibas, Tabayon, and Meybeo. In the recent count, at

BUTUAN City––Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr. yestereday led efforts to assist people displaced by the government’s logging ban. Months before, while he knew that logging had long been the primary source of livelihood of a significant number of his constituents, Amante took the “unpopular” move to actively implement President Aquino’s Executive Order No. 23 “Declaring a Moratorium on the Cutting of Timber in the Natural and Residual Forests and Creating the Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force.” Amante and his Action Task Force apprehended several millions of pesos worth of illegally-cut logs and lumber that caught the attention of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Manila and Malacañang. Sacked were the regional directors of DENR-Caraga, Police Regional Office-13, Agusan Candidates of the Miss Kagay-an 2012 model their swimwear at the poolside of Koresco Hotel.
