End killings of activists, rights groups tell Pnoy By RONALYN V. OLEA of Bulatlat.com
A GLOBAL CIVIL SOCIETY NETWORK has joined the local human rights group Karapatan in urging the Aquino administration to end extrajudicial killings. In a statement, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation and Karapatan called on the government to carry out fair and independent investigations into all cases of extrajudicial killings and disappearances. Since President Benigno Aquino III assumed office, Karapatan documented 99 victims of extrajudicial killings and 11 cases of enforced disappearances. Majority of the victims are farmers, indigenous peoples and activists advocating for land rights and
environmental protection. The group also reported that at least 385 political prisoners continue to languish in prisons as “a result of exercising the key civil society freedoms – freedom of expression, association and assembly.” “The rate at which human rights defenders are being killed in the Philippines is shocking,” says Mandeep Tiwana, policy and advocacy Manager at CIVICUS. “If the government is serious about its stated commitment to end rights violations, GROUPS/PAGE 11

BUTUAN City––The Criminal Investigation and Detection Team-Agusan del Norte has assailed the dismissal of the Illegal Possession of Firearms and Ammunition case it filed against Pedro Francisco Hernandez and sought its re-examination. Hernandez, of the Kank-

In an Urgent Motion for Reconsideration submitted to the Office of the City Prosecutor here, the CIDT-Agusan del Norte represented by Police Senior
Insp. Norman Ala, said respondent Hernandez was given a favorable decision “on a silver platter” and that the dismissal order should be reviewed and overturned “for being contrary to law, rules and jurisprudence.” First Assistant Prosecutor Aljay Go wrote the resolution dated June 25, 2012 dismissing the case “for lack of probable cause” and ap-
proved by City Prosecutor Felixberto L. Guiritan. The case was filed before the city prosecutor’s office following the April 1, 2012 search on a house at CS Compound, Bacolod Street, Upper Doongan here on the strength of a search warrant issued by Butuan City Regional Trial Court Branch 2 Judge Emmanuel APPEALS/PAGE 11
