DAVAO City -- Philippine flag carrier, Philippine Airlines resumes full operations Thursday last week as it commits to work on brand recovery through marketing and promotions.

‘Uyap’ not yet safe

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in its Shellfish Bulletin No. 24, issued recently advised the public not to harvest, not to eat, not to sell and not to buy them.

Visa Tan-Dimerin, Regional Director of BFAR, region 10, said the warning came out after the latest laboratory results conducted on the shellfish and “alamang” collected from the area have been found positive for paralytic shellfish poison that is beyond the regulatory limit.

Rubber research institute up soon THE government is establishing the Philippine Rubber Research Institute (PRRI) in a 1,000-hectare area in Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The site will be donated by local government unit in support of an industry that has the potential of contributing vastly to the country’s economy, according to Zamboanga Sibugay Gov. Rommel A. Jalosjos.

Strategically located near the Mindanao State University (MSU) campus in Naga, PRRI will help boost rubber’s potential in light of industrial manufacturers’ prefer-

ence for nature-friendly materials as a climate change-mitigating effort.

PRRI will institutionalize and sustain researches funded by the Department of AgricultureBureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR).

These include 10 programs spread across the rubber-growing provinces of Zamboanga, Cotabato, and Basi-lan, according to Dr. Nicomedes P. Eleazar, BAR director.

“PRRI should become at par with the rubber institutes

in Malaysia, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and China that have been developing new superior rubber varieties,” Eleazar said.

These research centers have produced rubber clones that are high-yielding, disease-resistant, and with reduced gestation period that allows latex extraction in 4.5 years, much shorter than the five to 10 years range.

“With the draft IRR to be submitted for approval by DA Secretary Proceso Alcala, the national government will allocate a budget of P100 Million for PRRI for 2012, its first year of implementation. This is equivalent to one percent of the gross value added of rubber,” said Galang.

PRRI will enhance rubber research and development programs including establishment of a nursery or a garden for budwood to produce grafted planting materials.

TANDUAY Holdings Inc. on Wednesday gave a sneak preview of a product it plans to export in an attempt to dislodge Bacardi & Co. Ltd. as the world’s top rum-maker.

Tanduay showed a square bottle with a long neck with a watermark of an embercolored sun during an investors’ meeting nearly two weeks before the company’s follow-on stock offering of 398.14 million shares. Michael Booth, the company’s consultant for rums, told the BusinessMirror they have yet to give a name to the product, which guests tasted during the meeting.

“It’s made from sugarcane so you can note the rich brown sugar y taste.

Strangely, there’s a sweet smell of bananas and pineapples, which is unique to the Philippines and which we got by accident. The aggressive alcohol is absent and, when you swallow, it kinds of melts away,” Booth said during his presentation.

Booth told the BusinessMirror they are thinking of pricing the product at between $50 to $60 per bottle to be exported in the United States.

He said that they may begin exporting either during the fourth quarter of next year or the first quarter of 2013.

Booth said Tanduay has a good prospect entering the global rum market as worldwide sales increased by

7.4 percent in 2009, passing whiskey and running second to vodka.

He noted that 65 percent of the spirit—the category of rum, which is higherstrength alcohol beverage—is consumed in the US, “where Tanduay will start its export business.”

Booth added that the company will also have a product in the “white rum” segment, which has a 42-percent share of the total market, and the super premium or “dark rum” segment that is 15-percent higher in terms of cost “but offers attractive margins.”

He noted that Bacardi has a 30-percent share of the global market “but is declining.”

The white rum segment is consumed more in Spanishspeaking countries like Cuba and Puerto Rico. “The Philippine rum is in style with these countries,” he said.

Tanduary chief finance officer Nestor C. Mendones said this will be the company’s first foray into exports having gained a strong foothold in the Visayas and Mindanao markets and furthering expansion in the Luzon market.

Mendones said the company posted a 6-percent compounded annual growth rate in total spirits with a 33-percent market share, citing commissioned third-party research.

He also said the company’s new products, Boracay and Tanduay Ice, which is being manufactured with sister company Asia Brewery Inc., are doing well “with variants Boracay Melon in shelves next week and two variants for Tanduay Ice.” Mendones said the company may surpass the 20-million mark in sale volumes this year.

AYALA LAND, Inc. (ALI) has created a new company with Mitsubishi Corp. that will be tasked with installing energy efficiency systems for the property firm’s developments.

The joint venture, Philippine Integrated Energy Solutions, Inc. (PhilEnergy), will eventually service other companies beyond the Ayala group with Mitsubishi providing the technical expertise, a statement released yesterday showed.

PhilEnergy will be 60% owned by Ayala Land, with the remaining 40% to be owned by Mitsubishi, the disclosure said.

“We are very excited about this new partnership with Mitsubishi [Corp.]

Being able to manage the occupancy costs for the tenants in our portfolio of leasing properties is going to be very critical to the continued success of Ayala Land in this very competitive market environment,” said Antonino T. Aquino, Ayala Land president and chief executive officer, in the disclosure.

PhilEnergy’s “key feature” will be the implementation of district cooling systems (DCS) for Ayala Land mixed-use developments, which will significantly bring down capital expenditures and operating costs by increasing the efficiency of the properties’ electrical and water utilities, the disclosure stated.

PhilEnergy has already allotted nearly P1 billion for the construction of two DCS buildings to serve Ayala Center in Makati City and Alabang Town Center and Muntinlupa City, with other facilities planned for Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Quezon City.

“We are also fully committed to raising the bar for sustainability in our facilities, and even the country as a whole, and PhilEnergy will be a vital component of our strategy moving forward,” Mr. Aquino added.

NEWS CAPS Globe Telecom bags P5-B loan

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is looking anew at the possibility of raising the existing limit on microfinance loans currently pegged at P150,000, in its bid to enable banks with microfinance operations to provide services to an even wider range of clients and to deliver financial services to more unserved markets.

BSP Deputy Governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. said in an interview with reporters that the bank regulator is reviewing an existing regulation that caps the loans provided by microfinance companies at P150,000, as stated under BSP Circular 409 issued in 2003. The BSP has issued Circulars 678, 680, and 683 allowing microfinance companies to diversify their product offerings to include housing microfinance loans, micro-agri loans and micro-insurance.

INFLATION

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) believes average inflation this month could still breach the higher end of the full-year inflation target of three percent to five percent due to higher food prices brought about by the supply disruption caused by typhoons Pedring and Quiel, as well as more expensive electricity costs.

BSP Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. said that inflation could average between 4.5 percent and 5.4 percent for November, but consumer prices for 2011 would still fall within the full year target. Latest data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed that inflation based on 2000-prices kicked up to 5.3 percent in October from 4.6 percent in September. This was the highest level since April of 2009 when inflation averaged 6.4 percent. Consumer prices averaged 4.5 percent in January to October, higher than the four-percent average in the same period last year.

SUGAR PRICES

Favorable domestic and international sugar production is resulting in lower sugar prices. According to Rosemarie Gumera of the Sugar Regulatory Administration’s policy and planning division, local sugar farmers are beginning to complain about the continued drop in millgate, wholesale sugar price which is down to a range of P1,170 to P1,130 per bag.

So far, Gumera said, the highest millsite price in Negros and Panay was only P1,280 per bag. However, the lower mill site price, Gumera said, is not yet translating to lower retail prices which are still hovering from P44 to P50 per kilo for refined white sugar. A continued decline in the mill site price, she said, may be reflected in the retail market after two weeks.

ALLIANCE GLOBAL INC.’s INCOME

Alliance Global Group Inc. (AGI), the listed investment holding firm of tycoon Andrew Tan, said that it is nearing its full-year income forecast this year of at least 35 percent growth from the P9.5 billion profit reported in 2010. AGI president Kingson Sian said the growth will be mainly driven by the robust performance across all businesses – flagship property firm Megaworld Corp., gaming and leisure firm Travellers International Hotel Group, hard liquor unit Emperador Distillers Inc. and Golden Arches Development Corp., (the Philippine In the nine months ending September this year, AGI chalked in record earnings of P12.3 billion, 62.6 percent higher than the previous level. $3.1-M PLANT IN CLARK FREEPORT ZONE

DHLI Dental Health Laboratories Inc., a new firm that specializes in the manufacture of export-quality pharmaceutical products, will be putting up a $3.1-million manufacturing plant in Clark Freeport Zone. Clark Development Corp. (CDC) President Felipe Antonio B. Remollo and DHLI Dental Health Laboratories Inc. Director Mary Jane J. Fowler recently signed a lease agreement for the establishment of the manufacturing plant.

Remollo said that while DHLI is a new corporation, its directors and officers have at least eight years of experience in the manufacture of similar products in the Philippines. He added that the firm is targeting to export its products to Pakistan, Indonesia, Europe, Australia, and the United States.

Philex Mining directors, officers and employees officially welcomed recently the company’s new President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Eulalio Austin Jr., a member of the Kankanaey tribe of western Mountain Province and a mining engineer who rose from the ranks over the last 28 years at Philex Mining Corp. He will officially take on the new role effective Jan. 1, 2012.

Austin graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering from Saint Louis University in Baguio in 1982, and started as a mining engineer trainee the year after. Because of his technical competence and attitude towards work and his fellow workers, it was not long before the Benguetborn young professional started taking on more responsible roles.

Philex Mining Corp. Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan turned over the leadership to Austin from outgoing president and COO Jose Ernesto C. Villaluna, who has announced his retirement after seven years with the company.

CHEAPER PESO

A cheaper peso, not an expensive one compared to the US dollar, is best for the health of the economy, University of the Philippines economics professor Raul Fabella said in a forum.

Fabella said he came to this conclusion after studying the monetary policies of other nations, while another speaker, University of Asia and the Pacific economics professor Victor Abola, studying the Philippine experience, supported the conclusion. Most central bankers in vibrant economies in Asia maintain cheap local currencies against the dollar as a core national development strategy, Fabella said.

Last minute buying lifted the local stock market from the day’s lows in light to moderate trading. The main Philippine Stock Exchange index gained 23.94 points or 0.56 percent to close at 4,261.59. More than 2.11 billion shares valued at P5.01 billion changed hands during Friday’s session. Decliners led advancers 79 to 76 while 42 issues closed unchanged.

LOBE TELECOM, Inc. on Friday said it had bagged a P5-billion loan from Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) to fund spending next year.

“Globe Telecom has signed a P5-billion loan agreement with RCBC to fund capital expenditures for 2012,” the telco said in a statement.

“The seven-year, P5billion, fixed-rate term loan facility with RCBC is the second loan agreement signed by Globe this year,” it added.

Globe Telecom recently

closed a seven-year, P7billion loan deal with Banco de Oro Unibank, Inc. which was spent on the telco’s capital expenditures for 2011.

This came after the firm earlier this month announced a $790-million network modernization program and IT (information and technology) re-engineering plan to be implemented in the next

two to three years.

The programs, set to start as early as next month, are expected to improve customer experience in terms of delivery time of text messages, network reliability and availability.

In a related development, Globe Telecom announced late on Thursday it will be granting discounted call and text rates to its corporate social responsibility program partners by issuing some 10,000 special SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards.

“Initially, we ordered 10,000 special SIM cards to distribute them to partnership groups. But we may order more depending on the demand,” Roberto I. Nazal, Globe Telecom’s head for corporate social responsibility, told reporters at the program’s launch.

The special SIM card cuts regular rates in half, such that text messages are will cost P0.50 each and calls are priced at P3 per minute or P0.05 per second, Mr. Nazal said.

Currently, the largest demand for power comes from the south-central Mindanao area.

The site where the coalfired power plant will rise has been identified as part of a special economic zone.

WANTED! A Perfect Travel Destination BUSINESS hotels are fueling aggressive expansion plans in Cagayan de Oro City, the Lim Ket Kai Hotel along Lapasan Highway just topped off and is now installing the glass façade of the 20 floors building, the tallest so far in Cagayan de Oro. Two high rise structures are also moving fast in their construction phases which maybe completed simultaneously early 2013, the Riviera Hotel owned by the Liceo de Cagayan University’s holdings and another Ayala Hotel belonging to their Kukon brand along Lapasan Highway.

Three business class hotel properties are racing to join the trade in the next 2 years that will add another 700 room’s capacity more or less to Cagayan de Oro City.

Many property developers in Manila with interest in airlines and tourism business were also expressing interest to come to the City of Golden Friendship. But for lack of authority, this writer can neither divulge nor write about their expansion and development plans.

There is so much to share in the local hotel rooms’ expansion in the city. With a

migration growth of 4% per annum and the opening of the Laguindingan Airport forecasted to be operational in the 1st quarter of 2013, business class hotels could achieve a profitable occupancy rates of 60%. The Department of Tourism (DOT) statistics for Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao indicate a 74 % average occupancy with a probable margin of error of 10%. Older establishments average less than that while newer hotels drummed their figures to attract business.

Presently, the Lumbia Airport is handling an average of 12 incoming flights daily. Combined incoming and outbound flights from Manila, Cebu, Davao and Zamboanga and vice versa could reach 24 flights per day during peak period of the week. With bigger aircraft of the A320 type which can seats 130 passengers, the average passenger arrivals at the new airport can be expected to reach 1,560 daily? Granting 50% of the arriving passengers are domicile residents of Cagayan de Oro or from some other Cities or Municipalities of Northern Mindanao, it is estimated that 780 of the remaining passengers are

businessmen or government executives making the trip is for business. With an average stay of 2.3 room nights per visitor according to the DOT statistics, a supply of 1,794 rooms classified as business class will be needed. The room requirements will increase during the convention months of April to November.

However, other existing hotels of the 3 Star or Tourist classification can adequately fill up the room requirements during the peak convention months identified by the local MICE industry. Conventions are not particular with accommodation class since these are budgeted events either by corporate sponsors or the government. Bed and breakfast is a sufficient denominator. Lodging nearest to the convention venue is the paramount concern among the participants.

The national and the local City Government can make the investments for new hotel properties or even up to a 5star hotel category level more attractive and profitable if both can synchronize their efforts to promote reciprocal flights to be undertaken by the private airline companies

Care when using your ATM card EVER heard of the term “shoulder surfing”?

No, it does not have anything to do with the water or the sport. However, it has everything to do with safety precautions during the festive season which thieves normally take advantage off.

“Shoulder surfing” is when a devious somebody looks over your shoulder while you are withdrawing your money from an ATM machine. It is also related to a familiar modus operandi, “ATM switching.”

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has recently warned the public against “ATM switching” and “shoulder surfing” during cash withdrawals, inquiries,

and Point-of-Sale (POS) transactions.

The BSP has received some reports that unscrupulous individuals resort to these modus operandi, wherein they victimize unsuspecting ATM cardholders who fail to employ the necessary precautions.

In its November 16. 2011 Advisory (which it first issued two years ago), the BSP gave a clear example of an ATM switching scenario: The suspect approaches the legitimate ATM cardholder after the latter has completed her/his ATM transaction, and tells the victim that there is still money (e.g. a P1,000 bill) left in the machine.

The suspect then asks

the victim to make a balance inquiry of the account, giving him the opportunity to look at the Personal Identification Number (PIN) keyed-in by the victim.

The crook then drops a bill and says it came out of the machine, supposedly as part of the victim’s cash withdrawal.

While the cardholder is busy picking up the money, the suspect would then remove the ATM from the machine and switch it with another ATM card.

“Your PIN may also be stolen from you through ‘shoulder surfing,’ which happens when someone stands close enough to the ATM cardholder to see the cardholder entering his

• Never share your PIN with another person. Not even with your family or friends and absolutely never with a stranger.

• Choose a PIN that is easy for

you to remember but which is not based on a birthday, anniversary, address, or telephone number.

• Change your PIN regularly.

• Do not use the same PIN on all your cards. While doing so may be easier for you to remember your PIN, it also makes it easier for a thief to access all your accounts if your wallet is stolen.

• Memorize your PIN, never write it down or keep it in your wallet.

• Report captured cards immediately. As much as possible, do not leave the machine without first reporting the card capture.

Immediately call the bank where your ATM card was captured using a cell phone or the phone provided by the bank in the ATM booth.

Too much acid?

IN this age where everyone and everything is in a hurry, it is no wonder that certain ailments seem to be on the rise, affecting the general population: which simply means that it is no respecter of age, sex, status, economics, or educational attainment.

Gastritis or what we commonly term as Hyperacidity is one such condition.

I would say, that, most of us, at some point in our lifetime, must have felt its fury! The most common cause for its occurrence I would say is still STRESS. Who among us hasn’t had a stressful event in our lives? Students, taking their examinations (especially when it is a make or break), mothers trying to fit in the budget, fathers rushing from work to home, and mind you, even babies, when they have separation anxieties do experience it.

I remember, when as a Medical Intern, while I was assigned at the Pediatrics Ward, I had a 2 year old patient who presented with nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain!

What further makes hyperacidity or Gastritis a common occurrence , is the way people today gulp down large amounts of coffee or tea!

Highly spicy and exotic foods, certain medications like the Non Steroidal Inflammatory Drugs, and Yes, SMOKING, are among the culprits, which actually irritates the lining of the stomach, causing inflammation or irritation.

Advances in Medical Science has it, that, Helicobacter Pylori (H.Pylori), is likewise implicated in the causation of Gastritis.

Before discussing further H. Pylori, for I believe that we should all be kept aware of this causative agent ( as this is treatable ), I just want to finish first discussing the other signs and symptoms: particularly those that should alert one to seeking immediate medical attention.

The most common complaint is that of abdominal pain, or that burning sensation even after meals. Nausea and vomiting, the feeling of being bloated, loss of appetite, frequent burping, are also symptoms that one may experience.

However, when there is persistence of the pain, weight loss , coffee ground vomitus or black tarry stools, one must see his/ her family doctor immediately!

More often than not, Gastritis per se may just be Gastritis. What we

Diagnostics only play a role after a thorough history taking and physical examination. The most commonly requested test would include a blood count, in order to check if there is anemia or not, and to see if there is an infection or not.

Tests for H. Pylori may also be requested: The breath test, where one is asked to swallow a pill or liquid with radioactive carbon molecules, and the carbon emitted is measured. Blood test for H Pylori or stool antigen test may also be done.

A positive test will help the Clinician friend to include antibiotics directed against the organism as part

of the treatment regimen.

It is noteworthy to mention that not all H Pylori positive individuals are symptomatic.

A more invasive procedure, the endoscopy is performed, and the gastric mucosa and lining is visualized, and samples may be taken for either H.Pylori testing or for tissue biopsy.

Treating a patient with Hyperacidity is often a challenge.

Although the textbooks tell us that Acid suppressants are the mainstay drugs in its management, I believe that managing Hyperacidity/ Gastritis should include diet modifications: less of spice, less of fat, more of high fibre foods, and the environment by which one eats: quiet and soothing, enjoying mealtimes either alone or together, chewing one’s food slowly and frequent small feedings!

And, of course, avoidance of foods/ substances that can aggravate the disease will surely help one lessen the episodes!

Should one be positive for H Pylori, appropriate antibiotics should be given, and hand washing as well as making sure that drinking water is safe and clean, are very simple and yet effective measures in containing the illness.

Aside from Egco, Nocos said Japan-based Toyota Tsusho is also eyeing direct investment in the project.

Nocos allayed fears of possible pollution problem, saying the technology that would be employed in the project prevent this.

“The project proponent is a company with a lot of experience in power business. The fluidized bed combustion process technology that we’ll be using would address concerns on pollution. This would be the most modern and cleanest power plant in Asia,” Nocos said.

Nocos said the company chose coal because it is much cheaper to renewable energy sources like solar, wind and hydro.

Sarangani Energy has already entered into a power supply agreement with the South Cotabato Electric Cooperative II here and is awaiting the approval of the Department of Energy.

Under the PSA, electricity generated by the coal power plant would be directly fed to Socoteco 2 to spare consumers the P1.10 per kilowatt-hour transmission charge.

FOR Gender Sensitivity Awareness and Personnel Enhancement, the Department of Tourism X Staff recently had their four (4) day tour in Region X1 particularly tourism destinations of Davao City and Samal City from November 11-14, 2011.

The tour is one of the major administrative services project in support to the yearly task implementation for marketing and promotion, gender and development (GAD) and particularly personnel enhancement training in their respective field of work.

It is one area where the entire staff take direct training in gender sensitivity awareness and development as one component in achieving the objective of intensifying visits Davao City’s tourists destinations by targeted markets.

The staff stayed at Crown Regency Hotel-one of the finest hotel in the city and enjoyed a sumptuous lunch at Marina Tuna where tuna and blue marline fish cuisine was served to the staff. They were briefed by the staff and entertained of RD Art Boncato at the Department of Tourism X1 when they made their office visit and courtesy call.

In between visit, the staff had different interactions for gender sensitivity

The 1,000-hectare area will primarily be an experimental station for breeding and selection of high yielding cultivars.

“New genetic materials will be collected from rubber producing countries to enable plant breeders to develop new clones that will perform well even in non-traditional areas,” said Eleazar.

Mr. Mendoza suggested that a survey on this be conducted not by the DSWD but by the National Statistics Office. The grantees of the program were identified through the 2008 survey conducted through the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction developed by DSWD. Social Welfare Secretary Corazon J. Soliman admitted “there were inclusion errors” on the list of beneficiaries and that the agency has been doing everything to purge the list. Ms. Soliman said that about

160,000 people have been delisted after complaints were filed with her agency and that the mobile phone numbers dedicated to complaints have received so many complaints.

In the third quarter of the year, the agency received 1,399 complaints with 404 resolved. On tapping of the statistics office for the survey, Ms. Soliman said her agency is willing to accede to the call for as long as there is a set of criteria that will show objectivity in the inclusion of beneficiaries.

Mr. Mendoza also quizzed Ms. Soliman on the exit program that the agency is implementing for the beneficiaries. Under the conditional cash grant, beneficiaries can only avail of a maximum of P1,400, in five years.

Ms. Soliman said that beneficiaries who will graduate by 2013 are being prepared through another program of the department, the Self Employment Assistance-Kaunlaran, which opts to provide beneficiaries with employment or small entrepreneurial endeavors.

On Ocober 26-27, 2011 the Department of Education holds its Step skills Development Competition with the theme “ One Division, One Product/Tatak Paaralan” the venue of the said activity is at the City Central School.
