Impeachment court orders CJ Corona to answer raps

THE Impeachment Court on Thursday summoned Chief Justice Renato Corona to answer the imp e a c h m e nt c o mp l a i nt lodged against him by 188 members of the House of Representatives.

S enate S ergeant-AtArms Chief Jose Balajadia said a team was sent to the Supreme Court at 3:30 p.m. to bring the summon letter to the office of the chief justice.

Corona was not in his office when the letter was delivered to his office at

4 p.m.. A representative received the letter on behalf of the chief justice.

The chief justice was also furnished with the 58-page Articles of Impeachment including its annexes.

On We dnes day, t he Senate convened as an impeachment court for the trial of Corona and approved in the first plenary the motion to immediately sent the said letter to the chief justice.

Upon receipt of the summon letter, Corona

has ten days to reply to the complaint, which falls on December 25.

The court allowed the chief justice to file his reply on the next business day.

“Since the tenth day of the period is December 25, he can submit his reply on the 26th or if ever it is still a holiday, he can submit the same on the next business day,” said Atty. Tina Cruz, impeachment Court spokesperson.

The prosecutors, meanwhile, are given five days to respond to Corona’s answer.

NTC told Telcos to warn users on data-roaming fees

THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) on Thursday directed phone companies to apprise subscribers of their dataroaming fees.

In an order on Thursday, the regulator directed carriers to “make sure that subscribers/users are fully informed, through text alerts and voice calls or other means, of the rates and conditions of access to data roaming.”

According to NTC commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba, continually keeping subscribers abreast of the fees that apply will prevent subscribers, “especially those who will be spending the holidays abroad, from [having a] bill shock.”

Rates for data-roaming services are higher than the rates for in-country data services, and in the past regulators have been forced to deal with complaints of subscribers getting in disputes with telcos over bills that soared while they were traveling.

NTC said subscribers must be oriented on the procedure for opting in (turn on) to avail themselves of data-roaming services or opting out (turn off ) to stop using the data roaming services. They must know how to ensure their devices are not piling up Internet charges as well, without their knowing it.

Last March, smartphone manufacturers agreed to an

NTC proposal to disable the default settings of internet access on new handsets that will be deployed in the market.

“That kind of feature in the smartphones should be in a default mode. This option should be left to the discretion of the smartphone user so he or she can have control over his internet usage,” Cordoba explained.

The NTC’s memorandum order no. 01-022011 on “Internet Access Through Mobile Phones,” states that a notice must be sent to subscribers informing them that access to the internet shall be charged a certain amount per volume or per hour. The subscriber should be provided an option not to use the service.

Aquino signs 2012 national budget PRESIDENT Benigno S. Aquino signed into law the P1.8-trillion General Appropriations Act for 2012 in ceremonies held on Thursday in Malacañang.

In the presence of legislators from both Houses, led by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte by his side and government officials, employees and media, the President

signed what he called the “Results-Focused Budget of 2012” that aims to allow his administration to fulfill its Social Contract with the Filipino people.

To achieve this, the President said that the Social Services sector, will receive 31.3 percent or P568.6billion of the total budget.

THINK a minute.

Some young children were asked this question: “What is a conscience?”

A 6-year-old boy said he thought it was “the bad feeling you get when you kick girls and puppies.”

A 9-year-old said your conscience is “a voice inside that says ‘No’ when you want to beat up your little brother.”

A guy was giving his friend advice on how to make a decision. He said: “You’ve got to follow your conscience. It’s like the little man inside you telling you what’s right and wrong.

Just do whatever your little man tells you to do.”

His friend answered: “No, that won’t work for me. My little man’s an idiot!”

It’s like the popular song about a person who’s committing adultery that says: “How can this love be so wrong if it feels so right? If lovin’ you is wrong, I don’t want to be right!”

Our feelings and conscience are NOT always a good guide to show us

You and I can tell a small lie, cheat on our taxes, school exams or customs duty, or get away with a little stealing. But that does not mean it’s right, or that we will never be caught and punished. what’s right and wrong.

Since everyone one of us has the tendency to be self-centered in one way or another, we’ve damaged and confused our conscience.

So we often tell ourselves that certain wrong things are right so we won’t feel guilty about doing them.

A person can be very wrong even though he doesn’t feel wrong or guilty.

For example: Adolph Hitler had 6 million Jews tortured and murdered just because of their race! But he did not show any guilt for all the evil he did.

not!

The fact is we’re still guilty of doing those wrong things, even if everybody else is doing it.

So because we cannot depend on our conscience or feelings every time, we need Jesus Christ to be our guide Who can clearly show us what’s right and wrong every day.

Magpaabot ka nalang kung unsay swerte ang moabot sa imo. Walay kadaugan ana.

Ngano mag hunahuna man ka ug dautan, nga pwede man mga maayong hunahuna? Sudli imong otok ug positibo, makalipay nga mga hunahuna. Kung mag hunahuna ka nga magmadaugon ka, makalaum ka nga magdaugon ka gyud.

Kung imong hunahuna gwapu ka, mahimo kang feeling gwapu. Parehas ra na sa gwapo. Daghan gihapon chicks ma-ilad nimo. Bwahaha! Ayaw pag hunahuna anang mga negatibo, ngil-ad, makasubo nga butang kay mao na ang makaguba sa imong kinabuhi.

Ikaw ang properta sa imong kaugmaon. Ikaw

ang maghatag ug higayon o limitasyon sa imong kaugalingon. Kini tanan mahimo nimo pinaagi sa imong hunahuna.

Busa bantayi imong hunahuna. Gikan sa hunahuna, mahimo na ug gusto o gana.

Gikan sa gusto, mahimo nang desisyon. Gikan sa desisyon, mahimo nang aksyon. Gikan sa aksyon, mahimo nang kinabuhi.

Ang atong lihok mao man na ang atong kinabuhi. Abi nimo hunahuna ra, kinabuhi na diay.

Ang dagan sa imong otok mao sad na ang dagan sa imong kinabuhi. Sudli imong otok ug maayo nga butang aron maayo imong kinabuhi. Naa sa imong mga kamot ang kahimtang sa imong kinabuhi. Madaugon ba o pakyas. Malipayon ba o masulob-on. Ikaw ang magbuot.

Kung magdesisyon ka na

Biggest losers

PARADOX OF OUR TIME THE paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints.

We spend more, but have less, we buy more but enjoy less.

We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time.

We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve added years to life not life to years.

We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.

We conquered outer space but not inner space.

We’ve done larger things, but not better things.

We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more but learn less.

We plan more, but accomplish less. We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships.

These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.

It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.

A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when we can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Remember, to say, ‘I love you’ to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

THE series of kidnappings attributed to Abu Sayyaf terrorists and the so-called renegade members of the secessionist fronts is damaging the prospects of Mindanao to lure domestic and foreign investors. The few businessmen and emerging entrepreneurs are losing on the opportunities that new enterprises could have established in many parts of Mindanao. In reality however, the biggest losers in this madness which seemed to be ignored and even condoned by communities that lend them safe haven are the youths in the very communities where these elements are sheltered.

It does not demand deep analysis why poverty pervades in and out of the territories held by these criminal elements. It is simply that no sane capitalists will dare invest a single centavo in a place where both his money and himself will only reap the prospect of being robbed or kidnapped. Where there is scarcity of jobs, opportunities and money criminality will fill that gap. If one does not support or join the kidnap for

ransom syndicates they either end up terrorists. Terrorists because instead of blaming and accepting the fact that his or her opportunities are denied her because of the lawlessness that is being tolerated. Ironically some of the victims of the gripping poverty blame the system except themselves and the dubious organizations that they support.

Unless the young and old generation wake up to the reality that most of their miseries come about because of their undoing, they might as well brace up for a more complex network of criminal syndicates and rabid extremists. The unending peace negotiations are just another problem. In fact, if only both Muslims and Christians in the conflict areas in Mindanao come to the realization that the other major threat to the stabilization in the region are the very groups that detest peace more than half of the problem that the negotiators wish to achieve shall have been realized. For as long as there is no truce, the kidnap syndicates and terrorists celebrate as the very

antidote to their criminal pastime is peace.

There is a perceptible activity among the Muslim youth, particularly the women in various non-government organizations that are strongly advocating for peace. Their activities show the symptoms of how weary they have become over the protracted and unresolved conflict that are telling on their future and on the future generations. But rather than putting the blame entirely on the government and on the MILF negotiators, it would do well for their cause if they start preaching on those who coddles kidnappers and terrorists on, who are the real culprits of their misery and on which faction should they side and work for. After all it is their future that is at stake.

Unless they want this misery to persist then any effort to redeem them from hopelessness is just a waste of time and saliva. It is not the government, the MILF, the terrorist and the kidnap for ransom syndicates who are the biggest losers. The communities who lend them sanctuary are. (MW)

Foreign service exam set Feb. 2012 DAVAO City––The Department of Foreign Affairs recently announced that it will conduct the 2012 Foreign Service Officer (FSO) examination on February 19, 2012.

DFA- X I of f i c e r- i n charge Erlinda Albay said that the qualifying FSO exam is intended for the recruitment of candidates for appointment to the position of Foreign Service Officer, Class IV. Qualified applicants must be a Filipino citizen, at least a graduate of a four-year bachelor’s degree course and must be less than 35 years old on February 19 next year.

According to DFA Board of Foreign Service Examinations announcement, the applicants must also be knowledgeable on the economic, political and social conditions of the Philippines.

Albay said that the examination will be composed of five parts namely the qualifying test, preliminary interview, written test, oral test and psychological test.

She said that application forms can be downloaded from the DFA website (www. dfa.gov.ph).
