OUT of the 18 typhoons that struck the country this year, the 19th tropical storm “Sendong” (international code Washi) was the most deadliest in terms of human lives lost that could reach over 2,000.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in its bulletin as of 6 a.m. on Christmas Day that the number of fatalities remained at a status quo at 1,100 and 1,079 missing.

But finding those missing alive is becoming slimmer and slimmer as each day passes by.

There are fears the missing could be dead by this time.

Rescuers have difficulty in recovering the victims due to the tons of mud that have covered the wide area of destruction in Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City and Dumaguete City that bore the brunt of Sendong.

So deadly was Sendong’s fury that houses were toppled like matches, trees uprooted and vehicles were washed out and overturned and piled up on top of the other.

Sendong dumped tons of rain never before seen in the last 50 years in northern Mindanao, particularly Cagayan de Oro and Iligan which are not normally within the path of typhoons.

Residents in these places were complacent that when the warning was issued by the government of an impending storm, they apparently ignored it.

Palace warns squatters not to return to devastated Isla de Oro

THE Palace has warned local officials in Cagayan de Oro not to allow residents of Isla de Oro to return to the slum area that was devastated by the flash floods caused by tropical storm Sendong.

“The President gave very explicit instructions to the local government unit and to the Philippine National Police not to allow the residents to return. We have already seen what happened,” deputy presidential

spokesperson Abigail Valte said.

Isla de Oro is a sandbar in the middle of the river that was turned into a squatter’s colony; many of the victims of the flash floods in Cagayan de Oro lived there.

“We also appeal to the residents there to heed the call of the President. Let us not expose ourselves to further danger,” Valte added.

The Palace official said construction efforts for tem-

porary shelters for Sendong victims both in Cagayan de Oro and in Iligan City.

President Benigno Aquino III has earlier ordered the release of P150 million for core shelters in the two areas.

Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano earlier said he should not be blamed for the large number of settlers on Isla de Oro that was ravaged by the typhoon.

Emano said many residents had already settled on the sandbar even when he was still a boy.

Sendong’s destruction left untold miseries to tens of thousands of victims and evacuees.

But what was heartening to note was the spontaneous response of Filipinos here and abroad and the global community which sent deluge of help in the form of cash and relief goods, particularly food, water and medicines.

Government from various countries extended material help to the victims in cash and in kind coursed to the Philippine government through their embassies.

The response of the

Philippine government was also tremendous as both civilian and military authorities joined hands in distr ibuting relief goods to the thousands of Sendong’s victims.

Once again, the Filipinos displayed its “bayanihan” spirit of helping each other in times of calamities like Sendong.

Many organizations cancelled their Christmas celebrations and instead chipped in money for the flood victims.

It was this gesture of sharing that cheered up the spirit of Christmas for the thousands of Sendong’s victims temporarily housed in various evacuation centers.

DEL MONTE VOLUNTEERS BRING AID TO SENDONG SURVIVORS

OLUNTEERS from Del Monte Philippines join many other groups who continue to bring aid and succor to survivors of Typhoon Sendong, many of whom lost their loved ones as well as their homes during one of the world’s worst typhoons this year.

The volunteers are employees from the company’s pineapple cannery in barangay Bugo, some 20 kilometers away from flooded areas of the city, and children of Del Monte employees who are on their school break.

As news on the extent of Sendong’s devastation began to spread, Del Monte volunteers were among the first to lend comfort and bring food to families in various affected areas on December 17.

Since the first day of the flood, four mobile teams of about 5-10 volunteers each, conduct daily relief missions in barangays Consolacion,

Among the team’s first beneficiaries were some 100 of its employees whose houses were destroyed in varying degrees by the floods. Del Monte’s two fire crews deliver water as shortage affects half of the city’s 750,000 residents. A total of 29,500 liters per day are delivered to affected areas and this will continue for the next 30 days. To supplement delivery, the company has recently installed four water refilling points outside its plant gate for the public. A mobile medical team extends free treatment and medicines spread across the nine evacuation centers, while nurses go around homes with the mobile relief teams to identify people needing medical attention and refer them to its mobile medical team.

At Del Monte’s Cannery Headquarters, teams load relief goods for delivery. Another team collects donations from employees as others pack donated items for distribution. Volunteers from Del Monte’s agri-headquarters in Camp Phillips, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, have lent support to colleagues at the cannery. Clean up teams armed with brushes,

pails, and shovels travel to Cagayan de Oro every day to help affected residents clear mud and debris from their homes, making the houses ready for reoccupancy by Christmas Eve. Del Monte Philippines Mindanao Operations Group Head Manny Nisperos said: “We at Del Monte are one with the community in moving forward from this tragedy. The company as well as its volunteers are here to help.”

As the Company’s relief effort progresses, more volunteer teams have been organized to bring assistance to more survivors. Additional relief programs have also been lined up to respond to specific needs of affected communities and help the survivors move on.

ILIGAN CITY- The recent flash floods that hits Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City brought about by Typhoon Sendong have indeed devasted the lives of people in the area.

As these developed, the Mindanao State University System under the transformative and multiculturalist leadership of President Macapado A. Muslim, spearheaded various stakeholders in MSU-Marawi main campus a series of relief operations for the survivors of typhoon sendong.

President Muslim created a MSUS Relief Operations Task Force ,chaired by Vice President for Administration and Finance, Prof. Nazarollah Macalandong and co-chaired

by Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Alma E. Berowa and Vice President for Planning and Development, Dr. Abdullah D. Alonto.

learning mandated for the well-being of the multi-ethnic peoples of Mindanao have responded to the challenge of alleviating and rehabilitating the affected communities.

Cabaro is a mixed MuslimChristian peripheral community, one of those severely devasted areas but concurrently underserved.

Barangay chairman Cabaro said of the 11 purok that we have in our community, 10 purok were severely hit which displaced more of less 750 families.

President Muslim said hopefully, when enough resources will again be available, through donations of cash and in kind as other campuses of

the University such as General Santos, Jolo, Sulu have started sending their contributions, and some friends and relatives of the officials are sending their donations, bigger reliefs operations will be scheduled soon in neighboring least attended areas in the ongoing relief efforts.

It was learned from President Muslim , the next target of the University officials to conduct their relief goods distribution is in Mandolog,one of the fardest barangay of Iligan City.

CARP partnership completes P11.6 million infra projects

AGUSAN del Nor te–– Department of Agrarian Reform through the Agrarian Reform Infrastructure Support Project phase III (DAR-ARISP III) turned over the 1.9 kilometers improvement and concreting of Farm-to-Market-Road (FMR) project amounting to Php11.6 million to the local government of Barangay Baleguian in Jabonga, Agusan del Norte, to benefit about 250 Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) held at Baleguian Gym, last December 20, 2011.

During the ceremony, Jabonga Mayor Glicerio M. Monton Jr., assisted

by DAR Regional Director Faisar A. Mambuay, and Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer II Andre B. Atega of DAR Agusan del

Norte turned over documents to the local government of Barangay Baleguian, who will manage the operation and maintenance of the said project.

In a simple ceremony, Mayor Glecirio Monton Jr. thanked the Department of Agrarian Reform–– through the ARISP III–– project for its valuable contribution in rural development.

“The project, indeed, is truly a blessing in making the people of Barangay Baleguian become productive,” Monton said.

Were there banks during the time of Jesus?

YULETIDE is undeniably the busiest time of the year.

You know that ‘tis the season when the lines are unusually long at the banks and at the automated teller machines: People are extra generous with their earnings and buy gifts for their family, friends and colleagues in the spirit of Christmas.

This makes you wonder, were there banks during the time of Jesus?

According to Benjamin Bromberg, who wrote an article for The Economic History Review entitled “Temple Banking in Rome,” banking is one of the oldest institutions known to man.

“Its history is lost somewhere in remote antiquity,” Bromberg said. “But this much is definitely known: banking was born in the temples consecrated to the gods and goddesses of mythology in the Mesopotamian area thousands of years before the rise of Christianity.”

Bromberg explained that t his c ustom of “sanctuary depositories” eventually spread to the other ancient civilizations IGNACIO in Europe— BUNYE including Ancient Rome, which at the time of Jesus was the most powerful empire on earth.

He added that there were about a thousand “religious sanctuaries” in Ancient Rome, and the larger ones served as repositories.

The historian Herodian, in his “History of His Own Times,” described the greatness of the banking Temple of Peace: “...it was made a public receptacle of treasures, and every one carried to it his most valuable effects, as to a depository of unquestioned security.”

He explained that the reason behind this was the notoriety of ancient Roman

bankers.

“We know that the banker of Roman antiquity was not so highly respected…..

In fact, the ancient financier was a rather highly despised member of the economic community by reason of his usurious practices,” Bromberg said.

In short, usur y was synonymous to the “mean employment of banking” during the Roman times, Bromberg explained.

This probably explains why in the New Testament, all four evangelists reported the incident of Jesus chasing the money lenders out of the temple.

It would be interesting to note that the modern word “bank” originated from a simple Italian word, “banca,” which means bench.

This etymology, as discussed in the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ “The General Banking Law Annotated: Book 2,” came from BUNYE/p.2

Sendong kills 41 in Bukidnon; 2 towns under state of calamity

MALAYBALAY City, Bukidnon––As of five in the afternoon Friday (December 23), the province’s disaster’s and risk reduction office reported 41 persons dead after storm Sendong struck at dawn on December 17.

The northern towns of Baungon and Libona, located in the upper boundaries of Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon, suffered most the ravages of Sendong being the pathways of the flooded major rivers of Bukidnon that spilled toward Cagayan de Oro River to Macajalar Bay. The provincial government officially declared Baungon and Libona towns in state of calamity, also on Friday, December 23.

Arsenio L. Alagenio, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) and the provincial social welfare development of-

fice, said other towns of the province were also affected and recommended to be included as calamity areas but were not approved as it did not suffer heavy damages unlike the towns of Baungon and Libona.

As of Friday, a total of 2, 255 affected families from the typhoon stricken towns of Libona, Baungon, Talakag, Malitbog, Manolo Fortich, Impasugong, Cabanglasan, and Valencia City were identified by the provincial social welfare office.

The rampaging waters damaged and washed out infrastructure and roads, most notably at least three major bridges and the Lapinigan box culvert in Baungon town and four roads also of Baungon and Libona areas.

Foot and hanging bridges in various barangays of the affected areas were also

washed out by the flood.

Infra and road damages in the province totaled to P110. 095 million while damage to agriculture and its infrastructure amounted to P33. 160 million.

Of the 41 dead, five have already been buried on December 20 in Lingating, Baungon.

The provincial government provided P 5 thousand burial assistance for each casualty.

The lack of caskets for some of the victims had been remedied with barangay officials and volunteer carpenters making use of the lumber available in the affected areas.

The provincial government initially allotted P3 million for the immediate human needs of the victims according to PSWDO/ PDRRM chief Alagenio and as of Friday, Dec. 23, the social welfare office had distributed relief goods to

Already, various agencies and institutions coordinated with the provincial social welfare office extending donations and relief goods for the victims of the calamity.

Davao Mayor Sarah Duterte personally hand out P200 thousand cash to the provincial government through Governor Alex Calingasan as financial assistance to the victims in Bukidnon.

Typhoon victims whose houses were totally damaged will get an initial P10 thousand per family while those with partial damages will receive P 5 thousand per family.

cial session conducted last Tuesday at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, provincial board member Rogelio Lago made it clear that provincial legislators must do something to prohibit people in building residencies along riverbanks and flood-prone areas.

Lago, a former mayor of Libona said that efforts of relocating people living along waterways had been done in the past but still, the same people kept coming back to build shanties near the rivers.

Donaire kicks off Pinoy boxers’ 2012 campaign in Feb. bout Nonito Donaire, the current World Boxing Council bantamweight champion, will open the new year for Filipino fighters with a bang as he collides with Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. of Puerto Rico on Feb. 4 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

The 1970 Bhola cyclone was a devastating tropical cyclone that struck East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and India’s West Bengal on November 12, 1970. It was the deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded, and one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern times.[2] Up to 500,000 people lost their lives in the storm, primarily as a result of the storm surge that flooded much of the low-lying islands of the Ganges Delta. This cyclone was the sixth cyclonic storm of the 1970 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, and also the season’s strongest, reaching a strength equivalent to a strong Category 3 hurricane.

The cyclone formed over the central Bay of Bengal on November 8 and travelled north, intensifying as it did so. It reached its peak with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) on November 12, and made landfall on the coast of East Pakistan that night. The storm surge devastated many of the offshore islands, wiping out villages and destroying crops throughout the region. In the most severely affected upazila, Tazumuddin, over 45% of the population of 167,000 was killed by the storm.

The Pakistani government led by Junta leader General Yahya Khan was severely criticized for its delayed handling of the relief operations following the storm, both by local political leaders in East Pakistan and in the international media. The opposition Awami League gained a landslide victory in the province, and continuing unrest between East Pakistan and the central government triggered the Bangladesh Liberation War, which concluded with the creation of the country of Bangladesh. This storm would also inspire ex-Beatle George Harrison to organize The Concert for Bangladesh, the prototype benefit concert, to raise money for aid, in 1971.

Chinese-Filipino community assists victims of ‘Sendong’ By: MIKE BAÑOS VARIOUS Filipino-Chinese Organizations in Cagayan de Oro and around the country have united to deliver a concerted relief effort for victims of the rampaging flashfloods which killed over 1,000 people at the height of Tropical Storm Sendong last December 17, 2011.

Roberto Ching, president of the Misamis Oriental FilipinoChinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (MOFCCCII) said the local umbrella group under the CDO Chinese-Filipino Community and five Manilabased organizations, namely the Philippine-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Filipino-Chinese Amity Club, World News Publication, Overseas Chinese Alumni Association and Philippine-Chinese Sin Lian Association, spearheaded the Operation Sendong Relief Campaign from the ChineseFilipino Community in Cagayan de Oro. The group has initially distributed over 5,000 packs of relief goods directly to the flood victims of Barangays Kauswagan, Puntod, Macabalan, Tibasak, Pagatpat and Balulang since Dec. 19. Currently, there are 6,000 more packs in the

warehouse ready for distribution. As more donations are coming in from Metro Manila, Angeles City, Cebu City, and Butuan City, the group expects to conduct regular packing with partner volunteers.

The Chinese-Filipino group also sent an initial truckload of relief goods intended for flood victims in Iligan City Thursday afternoon with 2,000 packs through Iligan City FilipinoChinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

One relief pack typically contains 5 kgs. rice, instant noodles, sardines, and other foodstuffs. He said the group is also preparing more truckloads of relief goods, including towels, blankets, sleeping mats, plastic pails, plastic water dippers, children’s underwear, slippers, medicines and bottled water, much needed by the flood victims. Speedy repacking was made possible with the help of volunteers from different institutions including Oro Christian Grace School, Kong Hua School, Cagayan Gospel Church and San Lorenzo Ruiz Filipino-Chinese Catholic Church.
