UTUAN CITY - Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr. has denied and refuted critics’ claims his administration has no concrete and significant accomplishments to push the city’s economy forward.

In a press release, Amante bared at least P45.7 million worth of completed infrastructure projects since he took over as city chief executive of this capital of Caraga Region in 2010. According to Amante, his administration has focused its programs on the development of outlying barangays to encourage farming communities to produce more and provide farmers opportunities to generate additional income SLAMS/PAGE 10

OZAMIZ CITY -- The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) in Ozamiz has warned the people in the coastal areas of the city to take precautionary measures against possible rise in coastal waters. The NDRRMC advisory said the Easterlies is affecting the Eastern section of the country and that a low pressure area (LPA) was estimated at 1,200 km. east southeast of Southern Mindanao. OTABATO CITY-- Unidentified gunmen shot dead a police officer assigned as personal bodyguard of the assistant treasurer of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Monday night. Sr. Supt. Danny Reyes, city police director, identified the slain police as PO3 Salipuddin Haron, 43, a member of the ARMM police office.

Reyes said Haron, serving as escort of ARMM assistant treasurer Sahad Sambutuan, was driving a motorbike along Sinsuat Avenue when two men rid-

ing in tandem on a separate motorbike fired at him using a baby Armalite rifle. Passersby rushed Haron to the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival by hospital authorities. Reyes said the motive is yet to be determined by Police Station 2 operatives. Initially, Reyes said the

possible motive could be personal grudge but Haron’s relatives insisted he was a good and religious man. Relatives also claimed he has no known enemies. Police are still investigating the real motive of the ambush, one of the series of shootings in the city since last month. (PNA)

He said the funding is pursuant to Republic Act 8794 the Motor Vehicle Users Charge Law, which provides 5% of all monies collected to be deposited in the national treasury under the Special Local Road Fund. The SLRF is apportioned to provincial and city governments in accordance with the vehicle population and size of the road networks under their respective jurisdiction. This is used exclusively for maintenance of local roads.

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Al Jacinto / Feb. 15, 2012) – A leader of a former Muslim rebel group which signed a peace deal with Manila has been tagged as behind the kidnappings of a Dutch and a Swiss wildlife photographers in the remote southern province of TawiTawi.

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Motorcycle gunmen shot dead a Philippine soldier in an attack in Zamboanga City in the restive region of Mindanao, police said. Police said Sergeant Cesar Simbi, 42, was heading home when he was attacked in the village of Canelar late Sunday. The assailants fled after the shooting and police said it is still investigating the motive of the killing. Simbi, a member of the Philippine Air Force, was

ing to an MNLF commander and his group as behind the kidnapping of Horn and Vinciguerre who are being held for ransom in Tawi-Tawi,” the official, who asked not to be named, said. He did not say how much ransoms the kidnappers are demanding, but Sadikul Sahali, the provincial governor, is negotiat-

ing with the gang for the release of the foreigners. Five gunmen seized the two photographers along with a Filipino guide, Ivan Sarenas, 35, who managed to escape from the gang in the town of Panglima Sugala. Police said the foreigners, who arrived in the province late last month, were taking photographs of wild birds when gunmen seized them on February 2. Police also said a local gang is holding Horn and Vinciguerre. “They were abducted by locals and not the Abu Sayyaf,” said

Normin villages up for energization VILLANUEVA, Misamis Oriental – More villages in Northern Mindanao will soon have access to electricity. This developed after the Department of Energy (DOE) approved the energization of 68 more villages in the region following the allocation of some PhP24.6 million earmarked from the electrification fund of energy-firm STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI).

While DOE indicates that 99.84% of Mindanao is already connected in terms of barangay electrification as of November 2011, the sitio level energization is still much wanting. “This electrification project hopefully will help generate jobs and stimulate small businesses in the countryside” said Steag comrel manager Ghaye Alegrio. Once completed, the

project will bring in a total of 84 villages in the region energized using SPI’s electrification budget since 2007. So far, PhP 31.9 million have been earmarked by SPI as contribution to DOE’s electrification program.

Target communities for this project include 11 villages in Cagayan de Oro City, 50 in Misamis Oriental, and 7 in Misamis Occidental. Project will be implemented in partnership with power utilities operating in the area.

4ID Task Group “Diamond” Response Turnover CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City -- The 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division turned-over the 4ID Task Group “Diamond” Response to the 4th Civil Military Operations Battalion at the Division’s Grandstand here, today. The 4ID Task Group “Diamond” Response was organized on December 18, 2011 to address the damning situation caused by Typhoon Sendong and ensure that all the requests and needs of the Sendong survivors are well taken cared of. During the turn-over, the 4CMOBn assumed the leadership, duties and responsibilities of the Task Group to continue its previous commitments, however, coordinations and other obligations will coursed through the said battalion. The turnover was done

since the Task Group has minimal activities which is more on relief distribution, medical mission and clean up drive while major activities such as rehabilitation and relocation of the Sendong survivors is taken cared of by the City Government and other caused-oriented groups. MGen Victor A Felix AFP, Commander, 4ID said, “With this turnover, the 4th Infantry Division reiterates its commitment to help the City and the Sendong victims through our CMOBn. Other forces previously controlled by the Task Group will revert back to its traditional role of winning the peace in this part of the country. Rest assured that we are always ready to help our people, especially the less fortunate ones when needed.”

The art of forgiveness Jibber Jabber with Ace Fredrian Xavier Busico FORGIVENESS, it is what we always hear being encouraged in every religion. To those hearts brutally wounded find it hard to recognize forgiveness. For many years I have met people who find forgiveness as a fairytale. Well, I cannot blame them for I do not know what happened in their past. Usually the past plays a role why some people become cold and unforgiving. One of the best lessons I learned from my dad is forgiving people despite the anger, pain, and making the first move to be forgiven. In our family, modesty aside, I am the one with the forgiving personality and that is why I get abused a lot. Though mentioned in the bible that you have to forgive 77 times, forgiveness is an excuse to abuse or exploit a person. We may forgive a person 77 times, but what if you keep forgiving to the extent that you already look stupid? This is commonly found among faithful wives who despite their husband’s cheating remain forgiving. But of course, to forgive is the highest and most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness. If a person wants to be happy for a lifetime, forgiveness is the answer. Temporary happiness dwells in retribution. Most of us outclass in vengeance that result in hostilities. Being unforgiving can blacken the soul and even change one’s attitude like in ABS-CBN’s 100 Days to Heaven where Bobby unconsciously mimics the vile attitude of his former boss, Anna. A person being humiliated or assaulted tend to imitate the offender and this could be transmitted from generation to generation through families and traditions. Only forgiveness can break the curse. According to Catherine Ponder: When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and be free. In my class, I always make sure that there are no hard

Run to Your Fear THINK a minute… My younger son has always had a terrible fear of fast roller coasters. Those rides at amusement parks and fairs that zip around so fast that the people riding them scream the whole way. But recently, my son decided he was going to ride one no matter how afraid he was. He forced himself to sit next to me on the roller coaster, and I could almost hear his heart beating and racing he was so scared. To tell you the truth, that roller coaster was almost too fast for me! When the ride was finally over and we were leaving, my son was so happy and proud of himself. He kept saying again and again: “Dad, I conquered my fear!” One of the important secrets to success and hap-

Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst piness, which many people don’t know, is that on the other side of our fear is a much better life for us. It’s only when we face and conquer our fears that we get past them and are free to reach our potential. The great army general, George Patton, said: “Fear kills more people than death.” You see, death kills us only once, but fear kills us over and over again. “It’s better to face danger one time than to live in fear your whole life.” Our

fears will just keep chasing us as long as we keep running from them. A wise man says: “Fear is a warning signal, not for us to close our eyes, but for us to open them wider, so we can face our fear head on to conquer and defeat it.” But if we keep closing our eyes to our fear so we can just stay in our comfort zone, then we’ll end up “buried alive in our comfort zone,” and never really live life to the fullest.

Some feared that by the time this article is off the press, the pile of garbage at Vamenta in Igpit had already grown into a two-storey building. Yasay did not give a damn? The same informant said that during flash flood spawned by Typhoon Sendong last December 17, not a single soul from Opol went to Igpit to find out if residents there are still alive. “We got no help from Opol,” a resident recounted as they braved flood to safer grounds cuddling their sickly mother. “Of course, we are angry,” a resident said. Although the accusation is debatable, environment groups insist that unabated mining at the outskirts of Opol is one of the culprits of the killer flash flood midnight Dec. 17. Nobody even talked about the mercury contaminated Iponan River as one of the reasons of town officials’ neglect of its environment. The interest on the continued discoloration of the Iponan River never been traced to rampant illegal mining and quarrying at the upper portion of the river, part of Opol town. What had Mayor Dexter Yasay been doing since elected as town mayor to curtail the scandalous destruction of Opol mountains by both legal and illegal miners? None! The informant said that an unidentified personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) called on Dexter for a one-on-one talked the other day. DIAZ/PAGE 10

Atty. Sara Jane A. Suguitan to be the sweetest mangoes in the world. At least eight native products are qualified to be listed and protected as GI. These are Aklan piña cloth, Batangas Barako coffee, Bicol pili nuts, Cebu dried mangoes, Dagupan bangus (milkfish), Guimaras fresh mangoes, Lake Sebu Tinalak from South Cotabato and Lumban barong. Geographical indications are understood by consumers to denote the origin and the quality of products. Many of them have acquired valuable reputations which, if not adequately protected, may be misrepresented by dishonest commercial operators. False use of geographical indications by unauthorized parties

is detrimental to consumers and legitimate producers. Consumers are deceived into believing that they are buying a genuine product with specific qualities and characteristics, when they are in fact getting an imitation. Legitimate producers are deprived of valuable business and the established reputation of their products is damaged. Two Asian countries have promulgated their own laws on GI. These are Thailand and Vietnam. In Thailand, registered GIs include jasmine rice from Surin, pomelo from Nakornchaisri, Praewa Thai silk from Kalasinth, Earthware from Koh Kred, salted eggs from Chaiya

and wine from plateau de Phurua. Applicants for GI in Thailand include the state and its agencies, producers and consumer groups or organizations. Use of the GI is limited and regulated by the trader groups in order to preserve the quality standards. In Vietnam, which is also very advance in protecting its native products, signs indicating geographical origins for local specialties and traditional services or products may be the subject of GI protection. Traditional specialties include agricultural produce and handicrafts. Traditional services include tourism and cultural services. They have at least 26 registered GIs which cover patis, tea, coffee, grapefruit, dragon fruit, anise, fragrant rice, lychee, oranges, mangoes, bananas, cinnamon, bagoong, their famous conical hats, persimmon, grapefruits, pipe tobacco, chestnuts, and apple custard. (Sounds yummy, doesn’t it?)

Private funeral planned for Whitney Houston NEWARK, N.J. - A private funeral for Whitney Houston will be held on Saturday in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey, at the same modest New Jersey church where the R&B vocalist honed her singing skills on her way to becoming one of the biggest pop stars of her generation. The invitation-only ser vice will be held at noon (1700 GMT) at the

New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston once sang gospel in the choir growing up, a family spokeswoman said on Tuesday. The spokeswoman did not rule out the possibility of a separate public memorial service later. The Houston family thanked fans for their pr aye r s but w ant e d a private service, funeral director Carolyn Whigham told reporters outside the

Whigham Funeral Home where the singer’s body was resting. She said there would be “nothing for the public,” only the private funeral service. “It was the family’s decision,” Whigham told rep or ters. “ The y have shared her for 30-some years with the city, with the state, with the world. This is their time now for their farewell to their daughter, mother.”

The body of the beloved singer was flown to New Jersey late on Monday from Los Angeles. Dozens of fans lit candles and gathered outside the funeral home to greet the golden hearse carrying Houston’s body on Monday night under tight security. On Tuesday balloons and cards paid tribute to the pop star outside the church, a simple, red-brick house of worship on a quiet

Monday, three armed men identifying themselves as members of the NPA went inside his compound. Two of the suspects poked their guns on him while the other one poured on the gasoline on his multi-cab. “They told me to stay put as they burned my vehicle. I was praying they won’t kill me,” said Vega. Vega said they are contemplating on filing arson charges against the NPAs. “It was so unfortunate this group was given wrong information about me and my family. They should have asked me if the reports that reached them were true,” said Vega. The Makilala PNP has already invited six of Vega’s plantation workers whom they believed could give hints as to the identities of the suspects. The torching of Vega’s multi-cab last Monday was

the third incident since February. On Friday, the communist guerillas torched five heavy equipment owned by the RDI Construction Company at Barangay San Roque in Kidapawan City. Three days later, they burned another two heavy equipment owned by a private construction company in Digos City in Davao del Sur. Extortion was believed as the motive behind the torching incident, authorities said. (PNA)

in Makilala town. Dilaab said that Vega has terminated a number of workers in his farms and failed to give the benefits due them. Vega, in an interview, denied all the allegations hurled against him. He said he has treated his workers fairly and even gave them more than what they needed. “I have helped them erect their houses inside my farms with water and electric connections. I gave them bonuses every December and sent them to resorts during Christmas parties,” said Vega. Vega told Makilala PNP he witnessed the torching of his Suzuki multi-cab, which he used daily to visit his farm. A rou n d 1 0 : 3 0 a . m .

feelings after I scold my students of their negligence. I remember last June 2011 during the barangay fiesta; I scolded two of my barangay tanods because they were drinking in public with their uniforms. One of them spearheaded a move to vacate their posts as a sign of protest and he even humiliated me over the radio. I was furious that night because of what I heard but when I remembered what my parents told me, I asked forgiveness to my tanods when I made my welcome remarks during the opening program and made my point that it was nothing personal. Sometimes, refusal of a person to forgive causes physiological disorders like heart problems, change in blood pressure, insomnia and many other diseases caused by nurturing anger. I felt this feeling many times when I was young because I

in the city are advised to take precautionary measures before going out into the sea, while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves. Mayor Nova Princess E. always encounter fights with my siblings. I would feel my chest so tight that I want to clobber them but my parents taught me to how to forgive. Always remember that people who cannot forgive nor has a hard time forgiving have a trouble living life for it hinders growth. The future is blocked and there is no place for new growth. Forgiveness allows the grace of God to dwell in a forgiving heart. Forgiveness allows healing. As what Mahatma Ghandi once said: The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. Until the next Jibber Jabber.

those who perished in the disaster is in addition to the cash assistance for those whose houses were partially and totally damaged. The City’s Social Welfare Department has adopted a bracket in calculating the amount of cash assistance to those who lost their homes according to the extent of the damaged. ‘The amount of cash assistance for partially damaged houses and those totally damaged are not the same,’ a CSWD personnel said. For instance, she said, cash as-

sistance on damaged to houses worth P1 million or more is much higher than damaged to houses worth P50,000 to P100,000. The CSWD has a master list of all claimants in barangays affected by Sendong. Names in the master list are also certified by barangay officials or neighbors living closely with the victims at the time the catastrophe occurred. According to Joson, the issuance of cash assistance will depend on the list provided by the CSWD. Since Friday last week, the city government has started to process claims of bonafide victims at the City Hall. City Mayor Vicente Emano said that the city government has allocated a total of P70 million cash assistance to Sendong victims. He said the amount is taken from the city’s five percent calamity fund.

US boxer Mayweather says Lin fame is for race not deeds UNBEATEN US boxer Floyd Mayweather says the attention surrounding Asian-American NBA guard Jeremy Lin is based on his racial heritage rather than his basketball exploits. Lin is the first US-born NBA player of Taiwanese or Chinese heritage. His parents moved to the United States from Taiwan in the 1970s while one of his grandmothers remained in China. Mayweather commented on the “Lin-sanity” buzz around the New York Knicks guard who came off the bench from obscurity a week ago to spark a fivegame win streak in the absence of stars Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony.

“Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he’s Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don’t get the same praise,” Mayweather said in a posting on Monday on his Twitter microblogging website. After criticism was heaped upon him from other tweeters, Mayweather posted a response late Monday saying his comments were meant as support for black athletes. “Other countries get to support/cheer their athletes and everything is fine. As soon as I support Black American athletes, I get criticized,” Mayweather posted on Twitter, adding a moment later, “Wow what a country.”

Lin’s unlikely rise to fame has captivated NBA fans worldwide, the Harvard economics graduate going undrafted by NBA teams and being cut in December by Golden State and Houston before landing a spot with the Knicks. Lin, a 23-year-old playmaker who is making only $762,195 this season, has made the most of his chance and become a leader on a team in search of a spark with his drives to the basket, his accurate passes and his defensive effort. The first player in NBA history with at least 20 points and seven assists in his first four starts, Lin has scored 109 points in those appearances, the most of any player since 1976, and

NCAA: San Beda coach Lim calm despite possible suspension By ADRIAN DY

SAN Beda may be forced to play in the upcoming 88th NCAA men’s basketball season without current head coach Frankie Lim when the Red Lions gun for a threepeat in the country’s oldest collegiate league. The fate of the Red Lions’ head coach, as well as some of their players, lies in the hands of the NCAA Policy Board, after the NCAA Management Committee (ManCom) forwarded a series of recommendations for sanctions stemming from an early December brawl involving Lim and several of his players, and San Sebastian volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb. According to a source with information about the proceedings, Lim could face a one-year suspension, preventing him from patrolling the sidelines this season. The ManCom also recommended suspensions for several Red Lions, with Nigerian Ola Adeogun top-

Several other players present during the fight may also get one game suspensions. Lim and Gorayeb then got involved in a verbal tussle that exploded into a full-on brawl, with Gorayeb and one female Stags player getting physically injured. When asked after a recent Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup game about the possible sanctions, Lim told GMA News Online, “They have to come out with a decision, then you can worry about it. For as long as they have not

come out with a decision, it’s useless to worry about it.” The NCAA Policy Board is expected to come out with a final decision on Wednesday, February 22, but it is in no way required to adhere strictly to the recommendations of the

But for now, PAGASA said the easterlies — or winds from the east — are affecting the eastern section of the country. “The whole country will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms,” it said. It also said moderate to strong winds blowing from the east will prevail over the whole country, and coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to light. Meanwhile, PAGASA said the surge of northeasterly winds associated with the northeast monsoon has weakened. “Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are alerted against moderate to rough seas,” it said. — KBK

The source added that at one point, ManCom was considering a lifetime ban on Lim, before backing down on the severe penalty.
