Teacher shock at $9.8b bank balance
CBCP official asks Aquino for ‘consistent’ use of political power
AN Indian teacher got the shock of his life when he checked his bank account online and found 490bn rupees ($9.8bn). Parijat Saha expected his balance to be $200 and could not believe his eyes - but a check at an ATM confirmed his billionaire status, on paper at least. The honest Mr Saha rang the State Bank of India (SBI) to point out the error. Red-faced bank officials would not comment, but sources say the funds were “uncleared” and he could not have withdrawn the money if he had tried. ‘Astronomical’ Mr Saha’s monthly salary as a school teacher in the eastern state of West Bengal is 35,000 rupees ($700; £450). But his account balance of $9.8bn is closer to India’s annual education budget of $11.5bn. “On Sunday evening, when I was checking my savings account balance on the internet, I was expecting an amount of a little more than 10,000 rupees ($200),” Mr Saha, who lives in the town of Balurghat in South TEACHER/PAGE 2

Observers are distraught over the scene and complain of the stench in the area as they call on Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno to deal with the problem soonest. A noticeable difference now is the absence of joggers in the park. Photos by Gerry L. Gorit

A LAWMAKER has charged broadcast firm Altimax, telecom giant Globe/Innove and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for “a colossal anomaly that involves at least P160 million, the violation of congressional franchises and the undermining of the authority and integrity of Congress itself.” Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño, in a privilege speech at the House of Representatives, accused the NTC of allowing Altimax Broadcasting Co. Inc. to operate despite violating the conditions of its franchise for nine years. He also accused the NTC of allowing Altimax to enter into an illegal agreement to lease its broadcast frequencies to telecommunications PROBE/PAGE 11

AN official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines called on President Benigno Aquino III to ‘consistently’ used his political power for the common good. With the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona by Aquino’s allies in Congress, Fr. Edu Gariguez said that it only means that the government can do anything it wanted. “The administration can therefore use its influence for anything that it wants,” Gariguez of the CBCP’s National Secretariat for Social Action, Justice and Peace told Manila archdiocese-run Radyo Veritas. “Our challenge is for the government to be consistent in using its political power, not just against Corona but also in providing justice for Hacienda Luisita farmers,” POWER/PAGE 11 Corona
