DAVAO City––Female room occupants could be an easy target of intruders at any time of the day if the boarding house they occupy has no strict measures against strangers and non-occupants. The crime of robbery and abuse done to a female boarder of Lerra Homes at Pelayo Street this city could be a case of negligence and absence of safety procedures to free the occupants from criminals. San Police Station identi-
fied the victim as Enjielyn Viggosson, 22, an employee and a native resident of Butuan City. Police investigators said that unidentified man approached and asked the victim to help him in locating a certain room in the
boarding house, but all of a sudden, the suspect pushed the woman inside her room. While inside the suspect hastily tied the victim with an electric wire and plastered the mouth. Before the suspect fled with the laptop computer, wrist watch and other jewelries, and a cash to a total loot of more than P200 thousand, the robber molested the victim, police investigator said. Both parties forged the agreement in March 1998 to affirm their constant and continuing mutual commitment to respect human rights and the principles of the International Humanitarian Law, the data added.

US, Phl armed forces to hold naval exercises in Mindanao GENERAL Santos City––The Philippines and the United States (US) Armed Forces yesterday began their scheduled nine-day joint naval maneuver exercises off the coasts of this city and nearby Sarangani province. Commodore Philip Cacayan, commanding general of the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao, said two US Navy ships arrived at the Makar port here on Sunday for the joint exercises with the Philippine Navy. The US naval units included a frigate and several
seacraft-borne helicopters. Cacayan said three Philippine Navy ships joined the exercise as well as several air assets of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Hundreds of US naval and coast guard troops, including US Army Special Forces, joined in the maneuvers billed as “Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 12.” The Philippine Navy identified the US ships as USNS Vandergrift, USNS Safeguard and mobile salvage unit USCG Waesche of the
US Coast Guard. The exercise includes in-port training, riverine operations, dive and salvage activities. While here, the American troops will conduct civic military operations and will hold rock concerts in Sarangani and General Santos. It will be the first time US Naval forces will hold their exercises in this part of Mindanao. Philippine Navy officials said CARAT 2012 is different from the Balikatan exercises since the former would not include war game maneuvers.
We are apprehensive of Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno’s interest to run for an elective post in Cagayan de Oro City. Although we respect and welcome Moreno as city resident, we are disturbed with reports of his obsession to become City Mayor. It is not that the Cagayanons would interfere on Moreno’s political plans. However, we, the people of Cagayan de Oro have also the liberty to question Moreno’s motive. The governor from Misamis Oriental may have all the good intentions to run for Mayor in Cagayan de Oro. Yet, the Cagayanons are not convinced of Moreno’s performance as Governor of Misamis Oriental. Although there are no charges filed against Moreno, reports of alleged corruption at the provincial Capitol had drawn anxiety among city residents. The employees at the provincial Capitol alleged that they do not receive their salaries on time. Adding insult to injury, lowly paid workers complained that Capitol failed to settle their amount loaned although monthly deductions were taken from their salaries. The province-owned Misamis Oriental telephone system has reportedly gone bankrupt prompting the PLDT, its communication provider, to cut off services. Last year, the Commission on Audit (COA) has reported on Moreno’s unsettled cash advances for P29-million charged as intelligence fund. There were reports of the province’s lavish spending, particularly the P78-million uplift of the Capitol ground. Since Moreno’s election as governor in 2004, the provincial Capitol destroy its playground every year in the guise of renovation to justify spending millions of taxpayers’ money. It is on allegation of extravagance that Cagayanons are anxious of Moreno’s political intent in Cagayan de Oro City. As living witnesses of Cagayan de Oro’s growth and progress, we pride ourselves of being Cagayanons. We worked hard amidst all odds. We maintained our consistency of support to duly elected officials as the city progresses through the years. We have succeeded in getting rid of politicians pretending to be leaders of our future. Will the wife be lucky than the husband? TOWN mayor Juliet Uy of Villanueva is running for Congress in Misamis Oriental’s second district. At least, that is what her followers are saying. With Juliet for Congress, her husband Julio would also run for Mayor in Villanueva. The picture is now clear. The Uys want to control the province second district. With Julio as town mayor and Juliet as Congresswoman, the couple is definitely possessed on Cris Diaz building a political turf. They (Uys) must have saved enough election money in preparation for next year’s election. After Julio failed to be elected, as candidate for Congress in the province second district, comes his wife Juliet hoping for sweet revenge. Julio ran in 2007 and 2010. In both cases, Julio lost with a wide margin against his closest rival, the incumbent Congressman Bambi Emano. Julio always engaged in a three cornered fight for Congress. His traditional opponents were the Baculios’ and the Emanos. Unfortunately, Julio always lost. With his wife in her last term, Julio would certainly run for mayor in Villanueva. He has abandoned his plan
for Congress. Thus, Julio delegated his dreams to his wife Juliet. Julio’s move was strategic since he could ill afford to let Villanueva go. He would see to it that Villanueva’s political atmosphere would always be under their control. As candidate for Congress, Juliet could be lucky. With Bambi Emano running for provincial governor, Juliet’s possible opponents are not clear this time. The Baculios’ might be Juliet’s formidable opponent. Yet, unlike before where the Baculios’ starts to create noise a year before elections, this time, Baculio’s camp is silent. If Jun Baculio would run, he would surely run under the Liberal Party. This could be a glut in the throat for the Uys. To make sure that they would have some kind of protection, the Uys might join the Liberal Party. However, Jun Baculio might protest this move since the latter claimed to be LP’s chair in the province’s second district. Yet, while Julio is fielding Juliet for Congress, the couple has still options. Since Juliet could no longer run for Mayor next year, Juliet could run as Julio’s running mate. Kagay-anon Americans IN two or three generations more, there will be white blond blue-eyed Americans with the last names of Linaac, Balacuit, Raagas, Dagondon, Lagahit, Mutia, Pacana, Simpao, Docdocil, Getubig, Macalutas, Mahinay and other Filipino names with origins from Cagayan de Oro. These will be the great and great great grandchildren of Kagayanons who migrated to the U.S. some 40 and later years ago. The Kagay-anon immigrants who came during and after the Philippine Martial Law years were newly married and no children yet. Some brought with them their preschool kids while other children were still in their primary grades. Those immigrants would speak to their children in

also in their behavior and culture. They do not like to eat Filipino food. They do not like Filipino music. They are uncomfortable with the behavior of their aging lolos and lolas. Their parents would bring them to the Philippines where they enjoy the beaches and the attention given to them but they hate the mosquitoes, the roaches, the dust, and the house lizards. The immigrants’ children would later marry. Their chosen spouses would
be of different races. Some would marry Filipinos, Caucasians few Asians and Aftican Americans. The Filipino or Malayan blood is weak. When we Filipinos ntermarry, we lose half or three-fourths of our features. When these mestizos become adults and marry Causians, the last drop of Filipino blood is gone. Unlike the original immigrants, our children rarely would bring their own children to Cagayan de Oro or anywhere in the Philippines. Their children (our great grandchildren) will have no connection to our native homeland. They probably would not even care about the Philippines. First, safe water needed for the preparation of milk formula and for cleaning and sterilizing materials, such as bottles and nipples may not be available in the area. Water in evacuation centers may be contaminated causing diseases. Water should be boiled for at least three minutes if it is to be used to prepare milk formulas. Bottles and nipples should be boiled longer to make them sterile. Refrigerators, in evacuation areas, are hardly available, making milk formulas spoil easily.

ing is still the best for babies particularly in this condition. Breast milk is the perfect food for newborns and infants because it provides all the nutrients
needed for healthy development. Breast milk contains antibodies that help protect them from common childhood illnesses like diarrhea, pneumonia, and malnutrition. Those were great times. We would talk about one day returning and retiring in Cagayan de Oro. It was almost everybody’s dream to retire in our homeland. But as our children became adults and have children of their own, we realize our dream would not be realized. There are very few lucky ones who realize those dreams. Still, many more have already bought their own cemetery plots with intentions to die and be buried in the U.S. One day, not in our lifetime there will be these grand children or their great great grandchildren who will be U.S. mayors, governors, congressmen, senators and who knows maybe even a president by names of Linaac, Balacuit, Raagas, Dagondon, Lagahit, Mutia, Pacana, Simpao, Docdocil, Getubig, Macalutas, Mahinay. RALEIGH, N.C. - The Carolina Hurricanes have signed new center Jordan Staal to a 10-year contract extension. The Hurricanes marked the start of the free agency period Sunday by announcing a long-term deal for the star player they acquired from Pittsburgh in a draftday trade just over a week ago. The team also brought back defenseman Joe Corvo and re-signed goalie Justin
Peters and Brett Sutter to two-way deals, but by far the biggest news of the day was the Staal signing. He will make $6 million per year under the deal, which begins with the 2013-14 season. He is due to make $4.5 million this season. Staal has said he turned down a 10-year deal two weeks ago to stay in Pittsburgh, and that decision precipitated the trade to
Carolina in exchange for center Brandon Sutter, defensive prospect Brian Dumoulin and the No. 8 pick in the draft. General manager Jim Rutherford says Staal - the younger brother of team captain Eric Staal - ``represents a cornerstone of our franchise for the long term.’’ The 23-year-old Staal had career highs with 25
assists and 50 points last season with the Penguins. He was coveted by the Hurricanes, who wanted to add a top-shelf forward to play alongside the older Staal. Britain lost second NBA player for men’s basketball tourney LONDON - Britain has lost a second NBA player for the men’s basketball tournament at the Olympic Games after Ben Gordon failed to link up with the squad at its training camp in the United States. Britain coach Chris Spice says the guard couldn’t commit to playing for the host nation after he was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Charlotte Bobcats on Tuesday. Spice says ``It’s really disappointing as he’s a worldclass player who would have made a huge difference.’’ With Bobcats center Byron Mullens out because of injury, it leaves Britain with only one NBA player - Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng. The London-born Gordon hasn’t played for Britain despite being named in squads since 2008. PBA TV ratings at an 8-year high TELEVISION viewership of the Philippine Basketball Association(PBA) games are the highest they have been in the past eight years, following the conclusion of the epic seven-game Commissioner’s Cup title series between the B-Meg Llamados and the Talk N’ Text Tropang Texters. Figures provided to the PBA Commissioner’s Office by broadcast partner AKTV showed that the recent Com-
missioner’s Cup was the highest-rated conference in terms of audience share (based on actual TV sets in use during the survey period) and AMR (average per minute rating) since 2004. The Commissioner’s Cup showed a 10.3 share and an AMR of 2.8. This beats the 9.3 audience share during the 2005 Philippine Cup and the 2.6 AMR last reached during the 2008 Fiesta Cup. HIGH/PAGE 7
