22-year-old girl robbed, raped inside rented room By BEN D. ARCHE, Regional editor-Davao

DAVAO City––Female room occupants could be an easy target of intruders at any time of the day if the boarding house they occupy has no strict measures against strangers and non-occupants. The crime of robbery and abuse done to a female boarder of Lerra Homes at Pelayo Street this city could be a case of negligence and absence of safety procedures to free the occupants from criminals. San Police Station identi-

fied the victim as Enjielyn Viggosson, 22, an employee and a native resident of Butuan City. Police investigators said that unidentified man approached and asked the victim to help him in locating a certain room in the

boarding house, but all of a sudden, the suspect pushed the woman inside her room. While inside the suspect hastily tied the victim with an electric wire and plastered the mouth. Before the suspect fled with the laptop computer, wrist watch and other jewelries, and a cash to a total loot of more than P200 thousand, the robber molested the victim, police investigator said. The suspect also intimidated the suspect to kill ROOM/PAGE 7

AGUSAN del Norte––One person died of cardiac arrest due to extreme panic and two others were wounded during a landmine blast, mid-morning of June 29 this year, in Barangay San Roque, Kitcharao town. San Roque, Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte is about 65 kilometers away from

Butuan City, Caraga region’s capital. Killed was 60-year-old Antonia Merida, while those wounded were Insp. Ernesto C. Tejano of the Jabonga Municipal Police Station and 47-year-old Allan Dumangas of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), who was then

working on a road project 60 meters away from the place of incident. Reportedly perpetrated by the New People’s Army, the landmine blast was allegedly intended for Tejano and his team, who were taking the national highway on their way to Kitcharao BLAST/PAGE 7

Petroleum Philippines cut their respective prices of diesel by P0.30 per liter and kerosene by P0.40 per liter. The rollback will bring down the fuel price average in Metro Manila to the following levels: unleaded, P48 per liter; diesel, P37 per liter and kerosene, P49

per liter. The price rollback was the 13th consecutive since April. As of posting time, the other oil firms have yet to make similar announcements. Last week, the same oil PRICES/PAGE 7

CAGAYAN de Oro City––Tensions are high at Barangay Agusan’s Zone 1 as two warring factions fight over who really had the legal rights on the waterway where the water from Tagpuangi Creek is supposed to be flowing. But whether or not to use the “old” or the “new” waterway is something that the Court of Appeals (CA) to decide. The other group, armed with demolition order issued by Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano, wanted the illegal structures that were allegedly blocking the “old waterway” be removed but the other group questioned the order and sought the assistance of the court. With the presence of heavily-armed security guards and police personnel, the second engineering district of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Northern Mindanao is having a headache implementing the demolition order. First, the group of Engr. Eduardo R. Quijano and Floreto Menchavez through their legal counsel, filed a petition for “Certiorari” before the Court of Appeals (CA) questioning the March 14, 2012 and November 16, 2011 order of the National Water Resources Board WATERWAY/PAGE 7

In a press briefing aired over government-run radio station dzRB Radyo ng Bayan, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said the government supported Paje’s move and called for an immediate investigation into the case. “There has to be an explanation and there has to be an investigation … ‘yung nangyari po mga logs na ‘yon, ‘yung mga naitransport under the watch of these officials. Mindanao (Region 12) to update them on laws, agreements and other state policies in protecting human rights. “This is an opportunity where our soldiers are taught on basic human rights. This is part of our continuing education, especially on how soldiers should deal with the people in the community. This is very important. We should know as to when and how human rights are violated,” Dela Cruz said. The training also taught soldiers on basic economic and political rights, which are also human rights. The soldiers learned about the intricacies of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect for Human Rights and the Interna-

tional Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL), according to Dela Cruz. Data show that CARHRIHL was the first substantive peace process agenda entered into by the Philippine government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines. Dela Cruz said that their efforts to educate and train their soldiers on the protection of human rights and adherence to the IHL, and the Rule of Law paid off with zero human rights violations in the past months. Both parties forged the agreement in March 1998 to affirm their constant and continuing mutual commitment to respect human rights and the principles of the International Humanitarian Law, the data added.

IF YOU DON’T KNOW what poverty is like, go to the outskirts of Misamis Oriental. But knowing the contrary doesn’t require you on a Batman if only to find out provincial extravagance. Lie down face up in the mid of the provincial capitol’s De Lara Park! Count the light bulbs, roll over one after the other and compute the cost at P8.92 per KWH (inclusive of other charges) by 18 watts/ bulb times its total number, 10 hours daily… oOo Observers find Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Dongkoy Emano allegedly in constant violation to a law he himself approved! This is in view of the city council’s ordinance banning smokers from public premises. He should be arrested, observer suggested. Understanding that Emano’s office is one belonging to the public, visitor questioned –police matter over the mayor’s smoking habit –below one’s breath! Well, besides he was born under a lucky star, nobody has dared file charges against him for that matter. And, I never heard anyone being arrested likely, so far! oOo Political bickering between Emano’s camp has now protracted into family break-up of the Balingasag czar Oca Moreno. Family however blames on everyone’s tongue which can’t seem to rest in peace to early, too soon. Regardless, my earliest reader asked what difference does it make when Oca wins Cagayan de Oro City mayoral seat over the incumbent Dongkoy? Basically nothing! Besides both were born under their lucky stars not getting arrested for smoking in their public offices, they are equally in the business in dog’s age! The guys sure can still, make beautiful, fat kills politically.

They may have lashed out at each other between now and 2013, but they are brothers under the skin, after all! oOo Oca’s sibling, Dr. Ramon S. Moreno, M.D., was a talk-of-the-town lately by bringing his original family to pay visit to Misamis Oriental kingpin Dongkoy Emano. Dongkoy’s confirmation of the doctor’s political desire for Balingasag has brought speculations of an opportunity to manipulate against the former’s imminent rival’s destruction. Well, does he need more other than Oca himself –in that case? Seriously, the science and culture of realpolitik, construction of powerbase, if not choosing the way of least cost to an endgame, is more compulsory than destruction approach. Lest the legwork is the only intelligent trajectory to command votes in one’s bailiwick! Besides, Dongkoy is never a babe in the woods to back a wrong horse! However, the possibility may after all persist, as in traditionally, provided the doctor has the almighty dollar at his elbow. This doesn’t matter which strategically troubled family he hails from. oOo We Cagayanons are cynically true to how we perceive things far cry from its forms! We have a hill as Patag; and, a literally flat ground as Puntod. No wonder we allowed our city detention center in the outskirt somewhere; while the provincial jail squats under everybody’s nose –yet remaining not a sight for sore eyes! oOo Blessed are the poor… for theirs is the kingdom of heaven! US, Phl armed forces to hold naval exercises in Mindanao GENERAL Santos City––The Philippines and the United States (US) Armed Forces yesterday began their scheduled nine-day joint naval maneuver exercises off the coasts of this city and nearby Sarangani province. Commodore Philip Cacayan, commanding general of the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao, said two US Navy ships arrived at the Makar port here on Sunday for the joint exercises with the Philippine Navy. The US naval units included a frigate and several

seacraft-borne helicopters. Cacayan said three Philippine Navy ships joined the exercise as well as several air assets of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Hundreds of US naval and coast guard troops, including US Army Special Forces, joined in the maneuvers billed as “Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 12.” The Philippine Navy identified the US ships as USNS Vandergrift, USNS Safeguard and mobile salvage unit USCG Waesche of the

US Coast Guard. The exercise includes in-port training, riverine operations, dive and salvage activities. While here, the American troops will conduct civic military operations and will hold rock concerts in Sarangani and General Santos. It will be the first time US Naval forces will hold their exercises in this part of Mindanao. Philippine Navy officials said CARAT 2012 is different from the Balikatan exercises since the former would not include war game maneuvers.

We are apprehensive of Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno’s interest to run for an elective post in Cagayan de Oro City. Although we respect and welcome Moreno as city resident, we are disturbed with reports of his obsession to become City Mayor. It is not that the Cagayanons would interfere on Moreno’s political plans. However, we, the people of Cagayan de Oro have also the liberty to question Moreno’s motive. The governor from Misamis Oriental may have all the good intentions to run for Mayor in Cagayan de Oro. Yet, the Cagayanons are not convinced of Moreno’s performance as Governor of Misamis Oriental. Although there are no charges filed against Moreno, reports of alleged corruption at the provincial Capitol had drawn anxiety among city residents. The employees at the provincial Capitol alleged that they do not receive their salaries on time. Adding insult to injury, lowly paid workers complained that Capitol failed to settle their amount loaned although monthly deductions were taken from their salaries. The province-owned Misamis Oriental telephone system has reportedly gone bankrupt prompting the PLDT, its communication provider, to cut off services. Last year, the Commission on Audit (COA) has reported on Moreno’s unsettled cash advances for P29-million charged as intelligence fund. There were reports of the province’s lavish spending, particularly the P78-million uplift of the Capitol ground. Since Moreno’s election as governor in 2004, the provincial Capitol destroy its playground every year in the guise of renovation to justify spending millions of taxpayers’ money. It is on allegation of extravagance that Cagayanons are anxious of Moreno’s political intent in Cagayan de Oro City. As living witnesses of Cagayan de Oro’s growth and progress, we pride ourselves of being Cagayanons. We worked hard amidst all odds. We maintained our consistency of support to duly elected officials as the city progresses through the years. We have succeeded in getting rid of politicians pretending to be leaders of our future. It is our resolve to be vigilant of these leaders in order to safeguard the legacy of our sacrifices and dreams. MABUHI ANG CAGAYANONS! MABUHI ANG CAGAYAN DE ORO!

Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst Are we really listening and understanding each other? Or do we just go through the motions every day, but actually close our ears and hearts to them? Is it because we’re not really interested? Or do we simply not want to know the truth because we’re not sure how to handle it. We don’t want to be confused with the facts! Sometimes we parents choose to put our time and energy into our job and career because it’s easier than really dealing with

our kids or our spouse. But the more we escape from each other and our relationship challenges, the more distant and lonely we become. Why not start a new relationship with your mate and children? Today, you can start changing. You can start tearing down the walls between you and your loved ones, and start building a new, closer relationship with them. First, we have to let go of old hurts and anger

toward each other. We must choose to forgive them and begin again. We also must stop having such unfair, high expectations of our kids, wife or husband, so they feel that we’ll only love them if they do what we want. You see, it all begins with starting a new relationship with the One Who gave us each other. In fact, Jesus died just so you and I could be forgiven of all our wrongs and enjoy a daily, personal relationship with Him. So why not ask Jesus to forgive you and take charge of your new life with Him? He’s the One Who can give you His kind of love and power you need every day to start building and enjoying the close, happy family you want. Just Think a Minute.

Will the wife be lucky than the husband? TOWN mayor Juliet Uy of Villanueva is running for Congress in Misamis Oriental’s second district. At least, that is what her followers are saying. With Juliet for Congress, her husband Julio would also run for Mayor in Villanueva. The picture is now clear. The Uys want to control the province second district. With Julio as town mayor and Juliet as Congresswoman, the couple is definitely possessed on Cris Diaz building a political turf. They (Uys) must have saved enough election money in preparation for next year’s election. After Julio failed to be elected, as candidate for Congress in the province second district, comes his wife Juliet hoping for sweet revenge. Julio ran in 2007 and 2010. In both cases, Julio lost with a wide margin against his closest rival, the incumbent Congressman Bambi Emano. Julio always engaged in a three cornered fight for Congress. His traditional opponents were the Baculios’ and the Emanos. Unfortunately, Julio always lost. With his wife in her last term, Julio would certainly run for mayor in Villanueva. He has abandoned his plan

for Congress. Thus, Julio delegated his dreams to his wife Juliet. Julio’s move was strategic since he could ill afford to let Villanueva go. He would see to it that Villanueva’s political atmosphere would always be under their control. As candidate for Congress, Juliet could be lucky. With Bambi Emano running for provincial governor, Juliet’s possible opponents are not clear this time. The Baculios’ might be Juliet’s formidable opponent. Yet, unlike before where the Baculios’ starts to create noise a year before elections, this time, Baculio’s camp is silent. If Jun Baculio would run, he would surely run under the Liberal Party. This could be a glut in the throat for the Uys. To make sure that they would have some kind of protection, the Uys might join the Liberal Party. However, Jun Baculio might protest this move since the latter claimed to be LP’s chair in the province’s second district. Yet, while Julio is fielding Juliet for Congress, the couple has still options. Since Juliet could no longer run for Mayor next year, Juliet could run as Julio’s running mate. The fact that the Uys enjoy the support of the people of Villanueva, the idea of Juliet as Julio’s running mate is not farfetched. Will there be worthy opponents? React: crisguardian@yahoo.com

Kagay-anon Americans IN two or three generations more, there will be white blond blue-eyed Americans with the last names of Linaac, Balacuit, Raagas, Dagondon, Lagahit, Mutia, Pacana, Simpao, Docdocil, Getubig, Macalutas, Mahinay and other Filipino names with origins from Cagayan de Oro. These will be the great and great great grandchildren of Kagayanons who migrated to the U.S. some 40 and later years ago. The Kagay-anon immigrants who came during and after the Philippine Martial Law years were newly married and no children yet. Some brought with them their preschool kids while other children were still in their primary grades. Those immigrants would speak to their children in

As Far As I Know Roy Gaane, West Covina, California their native tongue but the television was and still is the greater influence in speaking American English. When the children started going to school they were already speaking English. They still could understand their parents’ dialect and some could speak it uncomfortably but English became the primary language at home. The immigrants’ children except for their physical appearance became Americans not just in paper and in their language but

also in their behavior and culture. They do not like to eat Filipino food. They do not like Filipino music. They are uncomfortable with the behavior of their aging lolos and lolas. Their parents would bring them to the Philippines where they enjoy the beaches and the attention given to them but they hate the mosquitoes, the roaches, the dust, and the house lizards. The immigrants’ children would later marry. Their chosen spouses would

be of different races. Some would marry Filipinos, Caucasians few Asians and Aftican Americans. The Filipino or Malayan blood is weak. When we Filipinos ntermarry, we lose half or three-fourths of our features. When these mestizos become adults and marry Causians, the last drop of Filipino blood is gone. Unlike the original immigrants, our children rarely would bring their own children to Cagayan de Oro or anywhere in the Philippines. Their children (our great grandchildren) will have no connection to our native homeland. They probably would not even care about the Philippines. A few may still do perhaps out of curiosity of their origins. KAGAY-ANON/PAGE 7

By NORA L. MOLDE CALAMITIES strain people’s physical and economic resources. The recent calamities that struck the country had displaced thousands of families and the aftermath was worse as illnesses began to spread. During the displacement, infants and young children are the most vulnerable. Having weak immunities, they are the ones who easily get sick in crowded evacuation centers. Feeding infants and young children with milk formulas in resettlement areas may pose dangers to

5

their nutrition and health status. First, safe water needed for the preparation of milk formula and for cleaning and sterilizing materials, such as bottles and nipples may not be available in the area. Water in evacuation centers may be contaminated causing diseases. Water should be boiled for at least three minutes if it is to be used to prepare milk formulas. Bottles and nipples should be boiled longer to make them sterile. Refrigerators, in evacuation areas, are hardly available, making milk formulas spoil easily.

Breastfeed-

ing is still the best for babies particularly in this condition. Breast milk is the perfect food for newborns and infants because it provides all the nutrients

needed for healthy development. Breast milk contains antibodies that help protect them from common childhood illnesses like diarrhea, pneumonia, and malnutrition. Moreover, breast milk is readily safe and available, ensuring that infants get adequate sustenance at the time when they need it even in emergency situations. (NCLM/Charina A. Cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, liver, and breast are all linked with drinking alcohol. Alcohol may also raise the risk for cancer of the colon and rectum. The American Cancer Society says that even the suggested daily limit of two drinks for men and one for women elevates the risk. Women at higher risk for breast cancer may want to talk with a doctor about what amount of alcohol, if any, is safe based on their personal risk factors. (WebMD)

Sharon reacts to blind item with salvo of tweets By EDWIN P. SALLAN of Interaksyon.com

JUST a little past midnight on Sunday, Megastar Sharon Cuneta took to Twitter and fired up a series of tweets in apparent reaction to a blind item posted in a website she did not identify. Aware of Twitter’s 140-character limit, the host of TV5’s daytime afternoon talk show, “Sharon: Kasama Mo, Kapatid” posted her reaction in 18 consecutive tweets, as follows: “There is a website that has posted yet another ‘article’ about obviously, me. I want to assure you all that there is absolutely no… “…truth to this. Halos lahat ng pinopost niya sa akin since last year kasinungalingan. Proof? Balikan nyo at basahin ang mga… “…naunang posts nya about me na blind items pa pero obvious naman ako. My bosses text me all the time and we are very happy… “…with the show. All new shows struggle in the beginning because televiewers have developed habits that you have to pray you are able…

“to change and it takes time to get used to watching a new show regularly until it too, becomes a habit of viewers. Nagtatrabaho… “…lang naman po ako, hindi ko pa sya nami-meet kaya di ko alam kung sino ang nag-uutos/ nagrerequest/nagbabayad? sa… “kanya para laging ako ang favorite nyang i-blind item. Ang dami na nyang nasulat na di nangyari kasi di totoo. Di ko alam… “kung may source siya or ang special lang ng imagination nya. Or baka dream nya maging si Ricky Lo or Dolly Ann? Sana… “makilala ko siya, para lang sana kilalanin nya muna ako bago nya ako siraan. Iniisip ko na lang, di ko na papatulan kasi di nya ako… “kilala as a person. And who knows why certain people choose to make a living or try to be famous at the expense of others?… “Okay lang. Give the issue time and you’ll see who’s making up stories all the time. This doesn’t affect me, btw. Matagal na ako…

“…sa showbiz, I’ve been thru worse. And besides, di naman ako ang nagmumukhang katawatawa at masama pag lumalabas na ang… “totoo. Never ako pumatol sa posts nya noon pa. May mga nagtweet lang na nag-aalala sa mga naisulat nyang bago kaya nilinaw… “ko. After all, this is a page for SHARONIANS. And you guys deserve to hear it from me straight. God is in control.:-)… “Nothing can ruin my happiness with my family and friends and fans, sorry! Goodnight again for the nth time, dear tweeties! Luv… “…you all and God bless us all!! Mwah!:-).” Based on the reactions to her tweets, it was later learned that the megastar was actually reacting to an article posted in the lifestyle and entertainment blog site, Fashionpulis.com, which according to its Facebook page is maintained by a certain Michael Lim. Lim, who presumably wrote the

article and referred to Sharon as “controversial host” or “CH” posted, “After a month of airing, the show has apparently not improved its ratings. Hence, management sent a memo instructing the production to plan the remaining episodes, including the finale. Apparently, the replacement show is already being planned. Now, people are awaiting for CH’s reaction regarding this news.” As tweeted, Sharon insists that there is no truth to what the article claims as well as for all blind items posted by the site in the past. In her succeeding tweets, she also qualified that she is not really mad or upset about the matter. “Hep hep hep! Remember — di ako galit. Di ko sya tinweet. Di ako nakikipag-away. Di ako “pumapatol” at natuto na ako!” she qualified.

Salamat. When most of us first arrive in the U.S., even before settling with our new jobs and homes, we from Cagayan de Oro like other Filipinos from different cities and provinces would get together for parties and picnics with our children in tow. Those were great times. We would talk about one day returning and retiring in Cagayan de Oro. It was almost everybody’s dream to retire in our homeland. But as our children became adults and have children of their own, we realize our dream would not be realized. There are very few lucky ones who realize those dreams. Still, many more have already bought their own cemetery plots with intentions to die and be buried in the U.S. One day, not in our lifetime there will be these grand children or their great great grandchildren who will be U.S. mayors, governors, congressmen, senators and who knows maybe even a president by names of Linaac, Balacuit, Raagas, Dagondon, Lagahit, Mutia, Pacana, Simpao, Docdocil, Getubig, Macalutas, Mahinay. After all, we have a U.S. president by a strange Kenyan name of Barack Obama.

town. The Geneva Convention has banned the use of landmines since innocent people usually became arbitrary victims, the police said. The incident was strongly condemned by Col. Ronald N. Albano, commanding officer of the 402nd Infantry (Stingers) Brigade even as he accused the ‘rebels’ to have violated the Customary IHL, especially in the Proportionality in Attack, Rule Number 14. He cited said rule, as stating: “launching an attack which may be expected to cause incidental loss of civilian life, injury to civilians, damage to civilian objects, or a combination thereof, which would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated, is prohibited.” He added, “we will never allow these rebels to hurt our innocent civilians again. Justice shall be served to the victims and these criminals shall be put into jail.” (with report from 42ND Civil-Military Operations Company, 4CMOBN)

(NWRB). Second, the attempt to demolish the alleged illegal structures failed because of the presence of heavilyarmed security guards–-and even policemen. The DPWH had already sent heavy equipment to continue the stalled demolition order but failed after they were met with heavilyarmed security guards and policemen. Likewise, the demolition team of the DPWH was told by a lawyer that a case is now pending before the CA. The lawyer explained that with the filing of the Quieting of Title against Silverswan, the true bed of the disputed Tagpuangi Creek is yet to be determined by the court. “If the court would decide against our petitions, we will voluntarily remove the structures. But for as long as the court have yet to hear and decide our case, why not wait,” the lawyer was quoted as saying. But despite the land conflict, the water is freely flowing on the land owned by Silverswan. “We are really deter-

In fact, at one point during the overtime period of Game 7, there were more than four million viewers tuned in to AKTV, for an AMR of 9.7 and a 27.4 percent audience share, beating the big three of GMA-7 (24 percent), ABS-CBN (19 percent) and AKTV parent network ABC-5 (17 percent) in Megamanila. PBA Commissioner Atty. mining companies bringing down Opol mountains to the river beds in-order to go heaven. Thanks be to God, churches have their donations under the auspices of the municipal government –foot loose and fancy free! Not only in Opol though, but also do these donors have succeeded at flushing Cagayan de Oro City hills down the river. Hence, thousands of poor by the riversides went to heaven last year, in quick and ease. o Oo Where in hell heaven is? Likely, the only question reverberates from among some evacuees in Cagayan de Oro’s concentration camps –rather Tent

Cities! Indeed, life there for this long, notwithstanding heat, rains and rations, is as dehumanizing as in Nazi’s concentration camps, no less! Many said they envy at those who never made it after the Sendong mishap. Don’t worry! Besides, the quick means available on choice, one can join them next year anyhow –as all other bigger floods yet to come likely… After all, the government never seems to give a damn to the existing Chinese gold traders and hill-flushers somewhere upstream! oOo Countless Filipinos, aside from not knowing about it, are more preoccupied with their lives than what Scarborough all about. Yet some few people are already on pins and needles along with the national leadership against Chinese government encroaching our territory. Why? Aren’t the Chinese been in this archipelago since 6th century B.C. and literally own the nation’s economy todate? oOo If you have a friend who can’t control his sexual urges, bring him downtown to Grand City Hotel’s Sea Bar section. Let him observe to but one stupefying stupid bartender thereat whose attitude is totally nonkagayanon, at all! The guy seems to have hated at anything like flower base, ashtray, chairs and among others –aside from sporting a temperamental face. Nothing’s wrong with the hotel –but its old hand. which shortens each tournament and makes each game seem like a playoff game even during the elimination round,” Salud said. The numbers also show that in its first two conferences, viewership on AKTV was much more than the last three airing networks. In the finals alone, AKTV averaged 1.535M viewers in each minute, compared to 945K for Studio 23, 719K on ABC-5 and 258K on RPN-9. While Barangay Ginebra remains the top draw in terms of ratings, the BMeg Llamados and surprisingly, the Powerade Tigers have shown a tremendous upswing in their average viewership, the latter perhaps due to their Cinderella run during the last Philippine Cup. These latest numbers show that the PBA is definitely back on track to assuming its mantle as the clear and undisputed leader in local sports programming and marketing, a jewel in any TV network’s line-up. Hurricanes sign Jordan Staal to 10yr, $60M deal

The Carolina Hurricanes acquired hockey star player Jordan Staal from Pittsburgh in a $60 million 10 year deal contract. Photo Supplied

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Carolina Hurricanes have signed new center Jordan Staal to a 10-year contract extension. The Hurricanes marked the start of the free agency period Sunday by announcing a long-term deal for the star player they acquired from Pittsburgh in a draftday trade just over a week ago. The team also brought back defenseman Joe Corvo and re-signed goalie Justin

Peters and Brett Sutter to two-way deals, but by far the biggest news of the day was the Staal signing. He will make $6 million per year under the deal, which begins with the 2013-14 season. He is due to make $4.5 million this season. Staal has said he turned down a 10-year deal two weeks ago to stay in Pittsburgh, and that decision precipitated the trade to

Carolina in exchange for center Brandon Sutter, defensive prospect Brian Dumoulin and the No. 8 pick in the draft. General manager Jim Rutherford says Staal - the younger brother of team captain Eric Staal - ``represents a cornerstone of our franchise for the long term.’’ The 23-year-old Staal had career highs with 25

assists and 50 points last season with the Penguins. He was coveted by the Hurricanes, who wanted to add a top-shelf forward to play alongside the older Staal. Both Staals are natural centers, but coach Kirk Muller said earlier this week that he would experiment during preseason camp with having both of them on the ice at the same time. AP

Britain lost second NBA player for men’s basketball tourney LONDON - Britain has lost a second NBA player for the men’s basketball tournament at the Olympic Games after Ben Gordon failed to link up with the squad at its training camp in the United States. Britain coach Chris Spice says the guard couldn’t commit to playing for the host nation after he was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Charlotte Bobcats on Tuesday. Spice says ``It’s really disappointing as he’s a worldclass player who would have made a huge difference.’’ With Bobcats center Byron Mullens out because of injury, it leaves Britain with only one NBA player - Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng. The London-born Gordon hasn’t played for Britain despite being named in squads since 2008. Britain was allowed to compete at the Olympics by the International Basketball Federation despite not qualifying. AP

PBA TV ratings at an 8-year high TELEVISION viewership of the Philippine Basketball Association(PBA) games are the highest they have been in the past eight years, following the conclusion of the epic seven-game Commissioner’s Cup title series between the B-Meg Llamados and the Talk N’ Text Tropang Texters. Figures provided to the PBA Commissioner’s Office by broadcast partner AKTV showed that the recent Com-

missioner’s Cup was the highest-rated conference in terms of audience share (based on actual TV sets in use during the survey period) and AMR (average per minute rating) since 2004. The Commissioner’s Cup showed a 10.3 share and an AMR of 2.8. This beats the 9.3 audience share during the 2005 Philippine Cup and the 2.6 AMR last reached during the 2008 Fiesta Cup. HIGH/PAGE 7
