Police bust maker of fake driver’s licenses By GERRY L. GORIT, Photo-journalist
CAGAYAN de Oro City––An entrapment operation conducted by the police in the city the other day led to the arrest of a suspect allegedly engaged in the manufacture of fake driver’s licenses. Land Transportation Office (LTO) Regional Director Esteban M. Baltazar Jr. said the suspect, identified by the police as Danmark Hallazgo de Gracia, of Barangay Barra, Macabalan, was handcuffed at a shopping mall where the entrapment was made. Baltazar said a police officer posed as a customer for one of the suspect’s homemade licenses and upon payment of the agreed price the suspect was arrested. He said the usual asking price for a fake driver’s license is pegged at P3,000. Police confiscated from the suspect’s possession
three fake licenses made using a computer. Baltazar added that the suspect had been under police surveillance for sometime before the entrapment. He called on victims to come out in the open as they have found out the procedure used by the suspect in making the fake licenses. A case of falsification of public document has been filed at the City Prosecutor’s Office against the suspect. Baltazar said the LTO may file a case of estafa against the suspect. He warned the public that there could still be POLICE/PAGE 11

Davao del Norte to plant more reproductive trees By BEN D. ARCHE Contributor
TAGUM City––The provincial government of Davao del Norte will be beefing up its forest ecosystem by planting more productive trees in the province. The Provincial Environment and Natural Re-
sources Office (PENRO) has been tasked to lead the re-greening efforts as the province is turning into greener economy to ensure sustainable economic growth. Under the project, the province will boost its forest areas by planting productive trees which include fruit
trees, rubber, coffee, palm oil, and other fruit-bearing trees. Governor Rodolfo P. Del Rosario said that aside from earning additional income from tree crops, it is also a better way to fight deforestation and soil erosion. The province will take Hugpong Kinaiyahan, Inc.,
an umbrella organization of the associations of tree planters, producers and processors in Davao del Norte as its partner in the implementation of the program. With the fresh allotment of least P1.3 million, the development of some 55 hectares to rubber tree plantation is in the offing
which would benefit upland tree farmers in four municipalities of the province. Last year, there were more than 7,500 seedlings of durian, lanzones, mangosteen, rambutan, cacao and coffee planted to almost 28.5 hectares in the towns of Kapalong, Talaingod, New Corella and San Isidro, all
of the province. The provincial government also provided about 12,500 rubber seedlings and planted within the 25-hectare forest lands in three municipalities of the province. Aside from banana plantations, palm oil plantations are also fast expanding in Davao province.

Following their victory in the recently concluded 1st Dongkoy Emano Cup inter-barangay basketball tournament, Barangay Lapasan now looks forward to developing a basketball program for their youth. Barangay chairman Omar Labuntog said he will be meeting with the coaching staff of the barangay’s two basketball teams to map out the program to be financed through SK funds. The Barangay Lapasan team that competed in the open division of the tournament emerged as champions while the Under-14 team placed second, with the former bagging the top cash prize of P30,000 and the latter P15,000. Labuntog said the prizes will be divided among the players who, he said, all come from the barangay as they did not take in imports. In the open division, the Most Valuable Player award was won by Ramil Tagupa. Labuntog thanked Misamis Oriental 2nd
District Rep. Yevgeny Bambi Emano and his father Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano for sponsoring the tournament that was participated by the different barangays of the city. AGAYAN DE ORO CITY – IN its decisive intent of promoting livestock raising in the backyard level, the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 10 (DA-10) through the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Division (RAFID) in coordination with the Agri-Pinoy Livestock Division, recently kicked off its Schoolon-the-Air (SOA) program on Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) on June 4, 2012 over DxCC-RMN (82.8 kHz) this city. The SOA program seeks to convey suitable, cost-effective and sustainable technologies that would guarantee success in the production and management of swine, goat, cattle and other commonly reared backyard animals to farmers thru a stepby-step modular discussion over the radio. According to DA10 Regional Information Officer Ms. Mary Grace B. Sta. Elena, it specifically aims to increase the productivity and income of backyard animal raisers, both in the provinces of Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon. With such initiative at hand, she added that more farmers, especially in the remote areas would be able to gain knowledge, resulting in the augmentation of the stocks of the livestock industry within Northern Mindanao. Furthermore, she explained that the SOA program would tackle on the general
principles and minimum requirements of rearing backyard animals. Accordingly, it would ensure safety and comfort to backyard animals and raisers, alike without also compromising the environment. Overall, the farmers’ learnings would provide them with greater confidence in marketing their products to potential buyers as they know that they can satisfy the expectations warranted from their end, Sta. Elena ended. The said program would have its regular airing on a bi-weekly basis (Mondays and Fridays) from 5:30– 6:00 P.M. Wherein, it would be hosted by Ms. Sta. Elena together with the active involvement of technical experts from the Agri-Pinoy Livestock Division. Likewise, it is characterized by an interactive activity between the department and listeners as participants can
send in their feedback thru text messaging course-related queries. Prior the launch of the SOA program, participants have also b e e n br i e fe d t h at they’ll take a series of quizzes and a final exam to measure t he i r u n d e rs t and ing on concepts that would be discussed over the radio. This would also serve as a tool in selecting the top-performing students who’ll be eventually honored during a graduation rite with special prizes, including an experiential learning tour within the region at stake. I n i t i a l l y, t h e r e are 216 farmers enrolled coming from the towns of Libona, Manolo Fortich and Talakag, in the province of Bukidnon; and municipalities of Alubijid, Balingasag, Claveria, Gitagum, Lagonglong, Manticao, Opol, Villanueva and the city of Cagayan de Oro, in the province of Misamis Oriental. Interested followers of the program who wish to join such undertaking can still possibly do so thru submitting your names to the municipal agriculturist or agricultural technicians assigned in your respective places, so as to be formally part of the agency’s master list of enrollees. # (Joanne L. Following the right map THINK a minute. Have you ever been lost? If you travel to another country you don’t know, getting lost can be very frustrating and discouraging. For example, you’ve just come to Manila, Philippines and you want to go to a certain place in that city. A map of Manila would show you how to get there. But what if you had the wrong map? What if your map said “Manila, Philippines,” but it was actually a map of Jakarta, Indonesia. Can you imagine your frustration in trying to get where you want to go in Manila, when all the time you’re following the map of Jakarta? You’re following the wrong map.
Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst You could work on your driving skills and actions. Try harder and drive faster. But that would only get you to the wrong place faster! You might even work on your attitude and think more positively. But you would still be lost. Even being good and kind to other drivers and pedestrians along the way would not get you there either.
You see, your biggest problem is not your actions and behavior, or your attitude, not even the good things that you do—even though these all are very important. But your number one problem is that you have the wrong map. You must have the right map of life, or you simply can’t get where you need to go. There is nothing more frustrating than being lost
and not having the right map to find your way. This is why Jesus Christ came. He said I am the only way to true life. Follow me and I’ll lead you to where you need to go in life. I’ve got the right map. I know this land and territory called life. I know the way things really are, both now and after you die. So trust me and follow my way. Then, you will find the good life and satisfaction you’re looking for. So friend, won’t you decide right now to ask Jesus to forgive you for living your own wrong way? Won’t you choose to start following the right map of life—to start following Jesus? Just Think a Minute.
Nothing to celebrate on Independence Day YESTERDAY, the country celebrated its 114th Independence Day. The celebration largely focused on the lives of Filipino ‘heroes.’ We extolled the courage and the determination of the Filipinos who fought against foreign dominion. We tried to recall the sacrifices of people who contributed – no matter how little – for this country to gain independence. In spite of the solemnity and hisCris Diaz toric significance of the event, this corner has nothing to appreciate. No, I did not mean to desecrate the occasion least I could be charged with lack of patriotic nationalism. What I am driving at was our insignificant commemoration of the Independence Day. Perhaps, the way we celebrate Independence Day today would have been fitting 100 years ago. Yet, at this time of modernity, the way the Filipinos celebrate Independence Day is offbeat and outdated. Okay, let us agree to disagree. How do we celebrate Independence Day after 100 years? Well, after 100 years, I would like to envision the Filipinos celebrating Independence Day with pride, honor, and dignity. In other words, this generation should have celebrated the occasion with patriotic fervor and dignified nationalism. Heavy words. However, I would like to say that our heroes of the past never would appreciate the way we celebrate Independence Day today. I totally agree with their observation. Perhaps, you agree too. Why would certified revolutionary heroes mock the observance of recent Independence Days? Of course, our heroes of the past would agree with us that, after 100 years, this country has not gained
genuine independence. That after 100 years, the Filipinos continue to live in abject poverty was not the essence of independence that our forebears fought 100 years ago. Our heroes would definitely be ashamed of us. Their souls would be crying in anguished as Asian neighbors bully our country. They (our heroes) would be embarrassed to have died and fought for a country whose economic and industrial development pale in comparison with Asia’s poorest countries. Indeed, what have the Philippines and the Filipino people attained in the past 100 years? Could we cite something that we could be proud of other than ‘political vindictiveness?’ After 100 years, we only pride ourselves of media created ‘Edsa revolutions,’ an activity that demonstrated the triumphed of an elitist group to gain political power. I think the heroes of the past fought for independence in fulfillment of their aspirations for self-determination. That being an independent nation, the people would be inspired to be more creative, industrious and vigorously pursue a highly develop economy, military power, and progressive industry. The heroes of the past have envisioned a free nation endowed with rich natural and maritime resources to be a great nation in this part of the world. However, after 100 years, these dreams were only in the bucket. To cite a few, the country is a great source of metal and ore, yet, it could not even build its own manufacturing plant for cars and automobile. The country has oil reserves but it could not develop it without foreign capital. The country has fertile agricultural lands but its basic commodities are expensive. After 100 years, what makes an Independence Day significant? React: crisguardian@yahoo.com
Koko’s leaving PDP, and Binay’s presidency LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… He says, `Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth’...” (Proverbs 46:10, the Holy Bible). -oooEXTREME CARE IN HANDLING KOKO PIMENTEL-MIGZ ZUBIRI ROW: Vice President Jejomar Binay and those wanting to see him become President of the Philippines in 2016 should be extremely careful in handling the Koko Pimentel-Migz Zubiri problem. If not handled properly, this could yet produce the spark that could ignite a political conflagration that may regrettably burn down Binay’s expected ascent to the presidency four years from now.
Kakampi mo ang batas Atty. Batas Mauricio For the record, I have always strongly believed that Binay is going to be the next Philippine president and I have already expressed this belief in many a column and in many a broadcast of mine. But I have always premised this belief on the expectation that no unforeseen complications will crop up en route to 2016, and so far, Binay and his partymates have played their cards exceptionally well. But it would be wrong
for him and his advisers, especially former President Joseph Estrada, to treat Koko Pimentel’s intention to resign in a cavalier manner, as if Koko is not going to be a big loss to the party, and as if the senator’s leaving PDP Laban, on account of his accusation that the party is playing footsies with cheaters, will not make any dent against Binay’s presidential plans. This is gravely erroneous. -ooo-
PIMENTEL’S HIGH MORAL GROUND ON CHEATING: The fact is that Pimentel appears to many people to be treading on a very high moral ground in his objections against Zubiri’s being a part of the senatorial line-up of UNA, or the United Nationalist Alliance. This is not to say of course that Zubiri really cheated, or that he was even part of any effort to cheat under the Arroyo administration. No, far from it. But certainly, whether Zubiri himself cheated or not, or whether he had a hand in the cheating or not, Pimentel already proved that he was indeed cheated and robbed of victory, and the success of his electoral protest at the Senate Electoral PRESIDENCY/PAGE 11

Cancer-fighting nutrients Fruits and vegetables are rich in cancer-fighting nutrients -- and the more color, the more nutrients they contain. These foods can help lower your risk in a second way, too, when they help you reach and maintain a healthy body
weight. Carr ying extra pounds increases the risk for multiple cancers, including colon, esophagus, and kidney cancers. Aim for at least five servings a day, prepared in a healthy way. (WebMD)

10 New Cambodia Art Planned for an Old Empire

SIEM REAP––In Cambodia, the World Monuments Fund is putting the finishing touches on the first original carvings added to the famed temple ruins of Angkor Wat in some 800 years. The four statues will soon be erected to a roof top of the east gallery of Angkor Wat. This part of the massive temple complex contains one of its most famous bas relief friezes, called the Churning of the Sea of Milk, which depicts dueling gods and demons, adorned by apsaras––or celestial nymphs––ascending to the heavens, symbolizing life and immortality. The statues will be aligned against the sun to illuminate the center and caste a great silhouette across the grounds
outside the gallery, similar to the original statues lost long ago. Lisa Ackerman is the executive vice president of the World Monuments Fund and says installing new statues in such a sacred place would have been unthinkable 20 years ago, but public attitudes have changed. “Yes I think these are the first new commissions for Angkor Wat since it was finished several centuries ago,” Ackerman said. Ackerman added: “So I think the sense of history for us is the idea that we’re helping the Apsara national authority re-evoke for modern eyes what their ancestors gave to their community, once upon a time.” Previous efforts to preserve and restore parts of the

Angkor Wat ruins, which cover a thousand square kilometers, have been criticized for being shoddy or destructive and insensitive to local customs. But the Apsara Authority, which governs Angkor Wat, gave the go-ahead for the new statues production in 2008. The 70-centimetertall carvings are from blue sandstone dug out from a local quarry - similar to that used during the Angkor period empire which peaked in the 12th century. Their designs are based on some nineteen stone fragments traced to original statues and as well as line drawings from the 1960s and records kept at the Conservation D’Angkor. The World Monuments Fund, a private group dedicated to preserving historic architecture, dictated that each statue must be different and contain varying levels of detail.
The statues were then carved by Chhay Saron, a 53-year-old former soldier who lost a leg to a land mine. The project was led by English sculptor Sasha Constable, who has lived nearby for more than a decade. Ackerman said she expects the overall effort will win the respect of the authorities - and Angkor Wat visitors. “I think it will dramatically alter the emotional experience of arriving and seeing these spectacular new sculptures,” said Ackerman. The carvings were unveiled this month at an annual meeting of the International Coordinating Committee, a group of archaeologists and architects who work on the site. Before the statues are put in place, the group is still waiting for final approval from officials with Angkor Wat’s managing group, Apsara Authority. voanews

Tribunal proved beyond doubt that it was through cheating that he became unable to take his Senate seat much earlier. If Pimentel leaves PDP Laban and UNA now on the ground that his call not to run with supposed cheaters was thumbed down, the message that the people will get, rightly or wrongly, is that PDP Laban, Partido ng Masang Pilipino, and UNA chose to disregard Koko’s complaint against cheating and that, therefore, they are condoning electoral cheating in general. From any which way one looks at it, this is not going to be favorable for UNA in general, and for Binay, in particular! -oooWHAT BINAY, ET. AL. SHOULD DO: What should Binay, UNA, PDP Laban, and Partido ng Masang Pilipino do now? My take is that, they should take Pimentel’s complaint very seriously, in order to show to the Filipino nation that they are against electoral cheating. Now, how are they going to do this, especially since UNA already announced that Zubiri will run under its coalition? First, they should announce that UNA is creating a committee that will investigate Pimentel’s grievances. Second, it must also be announced that Zubiri’s inclusion in the UNA slate is being made subject to the result of the investigation of this committee. Third, the process of the investigation must be transparent and the results announced and made public immediately. This early, Binay and his partymates must show due deference to transparency and accountability. -oooREACTIONS? Please call me at 0917 984 24 68, 0918 574 0193, and 0922 833 43 96. Robredo said when asked why only small fries like smalltime bet collectors were being caught by police operatives in Caraga Region, particularly in this city. Earlier, the Butuan City Police Office admitted difficulty in building up cases against big-fries because it is difficult to penetrate the organized illegal gambling syndicate especially in gathering of evidences to pin down the influential financiers. Butuan City Police Office claimed it scored some victory in the anti-illegal gambling by arresting bet collectors. But Caraganon Roman Catholic Priest Fr. Santiago “Bebot” Ybaňez said the police were that “last inhabitants in the community who knew the identity of big-time illegal gambling financiers when everybody even a fourth grader knew who are these big-time illegal gambling financiers many of whom were sons, brothers, sisters and close businessmen friends of Mayors, Governors and friends of police colonels.’ Ybaňez said that in his parish alone, or in the community where he served, illegal numbers game “last two” netted P71,000 a day tax free per one illegal gambling financier. The parish priest said that he had been getting death threats because of his antiillegal gambling stance. He estimated that illegal gambling activities in Caraga region raked in between P2 million and P3 million a day tax free. WITH WIRE REPORT

LeBron vs. Durant: NBA’s two best players face off in Finals By SHANDEL RICHARDSON of the Sun Sentinel
OKLAHOMA City––Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant was only 5 years old the last time it happened, so it’s no surprise he was unable to remember a matchup as such. He and Miami Heat forward LeBron James meet in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday (Wednesday Philippines) at Chesapeake Energy Arena. It is the first time the top two players at one position have faced off on this stage since centers Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon in 1993. The matchup has grabbed all the attention, but the participants refuse to play into the story line. It is the Heat against the Thunder. Not LeBron versus Durant. “Everybody is going to make the most out of the match up or me versus LeBron, but it’s the Thunder versus the Heat,” said Durant, the league’s scor-

ing champion at 28 points a game. “One guy versus another guy, it’s not going to be a one on one match up to win the series, it’s going to be all about the team. It’s going to be fun.” This intriguing duel will draw all the headlines no matter how hard James and Durant try to downplay it. They are generally consid-

ered the league’s best two players, with James besting Durant for regular-season most valuable player honors. The victor here can instantly lay claim to the title of the game’s top player while also hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the first time. James is playing in the Finals for the third time while Durant is making
his debut. “I don’t really care. I don’t really get involved in the best player in the game,” said James, a three-time league MVP. “It doesn’t matter to me, really. When I go out on the basketball court each and every night, I want to be the best player in the game. I want to be the best player on that floor, and that’s just how I approach the game. So I don’t really care what people say at the end of this series if KD or LeBron is the best player in the league.” Fans have to go back to the 1992 Finals to see a pair of perimeter players square off for the championship. That was when Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls past Clyde Drexler and the Portland Trail Blazers. Before that, it was the Magic Johnson-led Los Angeles Lakers battling Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics.. Now, it’s the players who go by the nicknames King James and Durantula. “I’m hyped to see that matchup,” Thunder center Kendrick Perkins said.
