ONLY IN MISAMIS ORIENTAL?
Absenteeism, delays mar regular sessions By ED N. MALIZA, Correspondent
Journalists advised to ‘sync’ with authorities
MISAMIS Oriental––Youth leader Kendrick Galarrita topped the list with the most number of absences from the regular sessions of the provincial board since January 2 to June 18 this year. Galarrita, who represents the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Misamis Oriental to the provincial board, had already nine absences. Records show that the youth leader was absent on January 2, 23, 27, March 19, 26, April 16, May 21, June 4, and 11. In an interview, Galarrita admitted having failed to attend the regular session saying he has other commitments to attend to, especially the barangay where he served as SK chairperson. “Pirmi man gud ko naa
gabuhaton didto sa among barangay. Pero sugod karon akong paningkamotan nga mahatagan og higayon ang matag Lunes nga regular session dinhi sa province,” he told Mindanao daily News. Board Member Geodeguil Ursal had eight absences. He did not attend the March 5, 12, 19, 26, May 21, 28, June 11, and June 18 scheduled regular session. Ursal could not be reached for comment as of press time. SP member Jeremy DELAYS/PAGE 7

ZAMBOANGA City––Abu Sayyaf militants tied to alQaeda is reportedly holding a veteran Jordanian journalist and his two Filipino companions in the southern Philippine island of Sulu where they are to secretly meet with terror leaders. Military intelligence reports said Baker Atyani, the Pakistan bureau chief of the Al-Arabiya TV, and Rolando Letrero and Ramelito Vela, are now in the custody of the Abu Sayyaf. It was not immediately known whether
they had been taken hostage or still filming a documentary about the group. The Abu Sayyaf is also harbouring Malaysian and Indonesian Jemaah Islamiya militants, blamed for the deadly 2002 Bali bombings. But Senior Superintendent Antonio Freyra, the island’s police chief, insisted that Atyani and his news crew are still missing and that security forces are searching for them. “As far as we are concerned, they MISSING/PAGE 7

Kidnap gang leader killed in Zamboanga City ZAMBOANGA City––Security forces killed a notorious kidnap leader in a clash in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, officials said Monday. Officials said Wahid Pingli, tagged as behind the spate of kidnappings for ransom in Zamboanga, was killed on Sacol Island after a 15-minute fire fight over the weekend. “His neutralization is
a big relief for Zamboanga,” said Army Colonel Buenaventura Pascual, commander of a local antiterror task force. He said police and military forces were serving an arrest warrant on Pingli on his hideout when opened fire on soldiers and policemen. He said security forces recovered an automatic pistol and a grenade
launcher, including mobile phones and a medical kit from Pingli’s hideout. Police said Pingli was a senior member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and tagged as behind the kidnapping of a US woman Gerfa Lunsmann and her son Kevin, and a Filipino relative while they were vacationing in Zamboanga City. Sultan Kudarat, back as Ma’danao prov’l capital SULTAN KUDARAT, Maguindanao––Local officials had re-established Sultan Kudarat as Maguindanao’s provincial capital, citing the 1977 Presidential Decree 1170. Vice Governor Dustin Mastura, also Maguindanao provincial board presiding officer, said majority of the local officials of the province believed that Sultan Kudarat should remain as the provincial seat of power. His uncle, Mayor Tocao Mastura of Sultan Kudarat, said the practice of moving the provincial capital from this town to the hometown of elected
provincial governor must be stopped. In 2001, then Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. moved the provincial capital from here to Shariff Aguak, his hometown following a series of ambuscades and bombings that he claimed was directed to him after he defeated his rival, then Governor Zacaria Candao who lives in Sultan Kudarat. When incumbent Gov. Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu was elected governor in 2010 elections, he transferred the capitol site from Shariff Aguak to Buluan, his hometown. Mastura said the
practice must be stopped because PD 1170 that named Sultan Kudarat as the capital has never been revoked or nullified. The town is the crossroad to North Cotabato, Lanao del Sur and Cotabato City. Vice Governor Mastura said beginning this week, regular sessions of the Sangguniang Panglalawigan will be held at the old and dilapidated building in Barangay Simuay. Gov. Mangudadatu did not show up in the re-establishment activity nor issued comments on the event. WITH WIRE REPORT
Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez of the 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro City moves to have House Bill 2801 approved during a recent public hearing conducted by the Committee on Dangerous Drugs. HB 2801 mandates the random drug testing for applicants of driver’s license or license to carry and own firearms. Rep. Rodriguez filed the bill because he has observed that the most recent statistics of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) show that of the 14 million people, more or less, who underwent drug testing in various accredited laboratories in the country, only .006 percent was found positive. This percentage however, does not mean that trafficking and use of dangerous drugs has been successfully abated. It just means that those subjected to drug tests knew before hand that they will undergo a drug test and they have prepared accordingly to ensure that the results turn out negative. Hence, the need for random drug testing. Also in photo is Committee on Dangerous Drugs chairman Rep. Vicente F. Belmote, Jr.
Bomb kills army officer, wounds 3 more in Southern Philippines By AL JACINTO, Regional editor-Zamboanga
DAVAO City––An army officer was killed and three others wounded in a roadside bombing in the southern Philippines, officials said on Saturday. Officials said the attack, which occurred before midnight Friday, was carried out by the communist New People’s Army rebels.
The soldiers were on heading to their camp in New Bataan town in Compostela Valley province when the explosion occurred, said Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza, a spokesman for the 10th Infantry Division. He said the rebels used a landmine in the attack. “The landmine was laid on
the concrete highway 100 meters away from the Iglesia ni Kristo church and about 300 meters from a school,” Paniza said. He said the rebels violated the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and the International Humanitarian Law which the communist group was a signatory. WOUNDS/PAGE 7

Cops arrest two for swindling By PJ TREMEDAL Correspondent
OROQUIETA City––Two persons are now languishing at the city jail here shortly after police authorities arrested them for allegedly trying to swindle the daughter of a retired police officer. City Police Director Supt. Benjamin Talpis Jr. identified the suspects as 34-year-old Stella Ybañez, a resident of Baybay in Leyte province, and neighbor, 32-year-old Christopher Canada. Talpis said Ybañez and Canada were arrested following the complaint of Grezyl Joy Marcial, a nurse,
and a resident of Purok 5, Barangay Canubay. Marcial, who happened to be the daughter of a retired police officer, told police investigators that Ybañez approached her while she was eating inside a known fast food chain here. She said Ybañez asked her if she can help her look for a rent-a-car so she could transport some cartoons of dried fish that the suspect bought from Cebu City. She added that Ybañez was later joined by Canada who also told her that they needed a car so they could transport their cargoes. Marcial told police that she refused to help the two
on the ground that she also had no idea where to find a rent-a-car but the two handed to her a blue sock, reportedly containing bundles of money, in exchange for her help. Sensing something is wrong, Marcial “texted” her father who immediately called for assistance from the police and went to the food chain. The police immediately arrested the suspects and confiscated from them the blue sock containing the alleged bundles of money. Later, the police discovered that the blue sock contained cuts of old newspaper with 100-peso bill on top of them.
Dabawenyos divided over K to 12 program, survey says By BEN D. ARCHE Correspondent
DAVAO City––More than half of the people here expressed negative perception on the K to 12 (Kindergarten to Grade 12) program of the Department Education (DepEd) based on the result of the suvery launched by an independent local survey network. In a survey conducted by the Institute of Popular Opinion (IPO) showed that the respondents who were doubtful on the outcome of the implementation of the K to 12 education program reached 55.43 percent. While those who were really convinced that the program is beneficial scored 40.92 percent and the 3.56 percent remained undecided.
The program adds two years to the old 10-year education cycle construed as a better preparation of students for work and college education. The survey, which covered 1,151 adult respondents in three congressional districts of the city, was conducted on May 16-26 using face-to-face interviews. Respondents who favored the program said it could provide better and globally competitive work, and bring in quality education based on the education system in Canada, Australia and the United States. Those cynical respondents said that additional years in school can inflict hardship to parents or can’t solve problem on poor quality education due to lack of classrooms, meager bud-
get for education; instead prolonging the years in school could contribute to cheap and low-skilled labor turn-out rate and increase dropouts. The survey also revealed that 83.93 percent of the respondents declared they were aware of the program while 17.07 percent claimed they knew nothing about it. Dr. Rey Cuizon, IPO specialist, urged the proponents of the program to consider the result of the survey as one of the tools in broadening their studying on the implementation of the program. The IPO is an opinion survey center of the University of Mindanao headed by Dr. Ma. Linda Arquiza, which gathers views on various issues for the benefit of the public.

NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH LAST WEEK, the parishioners of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental were shocked with a priest calling Satan in his Homily. Cagayanons are devout Catholics. The action of the priest did not only dishonor the Roman Catholic Church but also desecrated the teachings of Christ. The priest was reportedly delivering a Homily in a mass held in a Chapel of one of the city’s upscale subdivisions. The parishioners reported that the priest described Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Dongkoy Emano as the ‘devil at city hall.’ ‘When wills the Devil at city hall comes down?’ Whether the priest was simply joking, his message in that Homily showed the highest form of disrespect of the Roman Catholic Church’s teachings. We, the people of Cagayan de Oro City, condemned the priest action in the strongest possible terms. We must not let this priest go unpunished. We should not allow this priest to continue to hear mass in Cagayan de Oro City lest he will inculcate the wrong values to our children. It is, therefore, incumbent upon members of the City Council to take action in order to send a strong message to anyone that the city government is the government of the people. The City Council must exercise its inherent function as precursor of fairness in dealing with its constituents. The priest has violated the sense of fairness by using the pulpit as a channel to destroy people and their institution. We know that the action of the priest was not sanctioned by the Archdiocese. On the other hand, the Cagyanons believed in the Church’s propriety and fairness, too. It is in this context that the people of Cagayan de Oro are urging the Archdiocese to investigate the actuations of the priest involved in this issue.

Murder suspect resist police arrest, shot dead KIDAPAWAN City––A cop shot dead a murder suspect after resisting arrest on Saturday in Arakan, North Cotabato, police said. Killed in the incident
was Jubert Baylon, 33, of Barangay Ganatan, Arakan, who in 2011 was charged of murder and frustrated murder cases. Sr. Insp. Rolly Oranza,
chief of the Arakan police, identified PO1 Dodong Cabuyao of the Alert Team as the one who shot Baylon when he attempted to shoot MURDER/PAGE 7
If proven guilty, the Archdiocese should reassign the priest to other areas or outside the Archdiocese. Otherwise, the continued presence of the priest in Cagayan de Oro may someday provoke the sensibilities of local parishioners. It is only by reassigning this priest to other areas that the wounded feelings of the people of Cagayan de Oro be relieved. MABUHAY ANG CAGAYANONS! MABUHAY ANG CAGAYAN DE ORO! PD ADVT

Father and friend THINK a minute. There was a man who thought he was going crazy, so he went to the doctor for an expert opinion. The doctor examined the man and told him: “I have to agree with you. You’re crazy.” But the man got angry and said: “I want a second opinion!” So the doctor said, “OK, you’re ugly too.” Sometimes we don’t want to hear the facts. A survey in America showed that 90% of Americans say they believe heaven is real, but only 25% of those same people say they believe hell is a real place. That’s like saying you believe there is light but no darkness, that there is right but no wrong. Common sense tells you that doesn’t make any sense! Just saying a place is not real doesn’t make it true.
Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst It’s like saying the North Pole is not real just because we don’t think so. The fact is Jesus Christ talked about hell much more than he did heaven. He said hell is a real place that’s full of the worst pain and endless suffering for everyone who rejects His good life by choosing to live their own way instead of the true way He created us to enjoy. Jesus repeatedly explained that the reason He came to give His innocent
life was to pay the penalty for all our sins. God the Son came to save us from suffering in hell forever, even though it cost Him His own divine life. You see, we can’t say we believe Jesus Christ spoke the truth about some things, but that He lied about other things like hell. He can’t be God and be a liar too. Remember, since God is perfectly good and pure, it’s simply not possible for Him to live together with any kind of wrong or evil.
Otherwise, He wouldn’t be God! Just like light and darkness cannot be in the same place together. But if we want God to leave us alone, He will. After all, He’s the One Who gave us our freedom to choose in the first place. He will never force us to love Him and live the way He created us to enjoy. Jesus said that even though our body dies, our soul will live forever—either in heaven or in hell. So it’s up to us to choose whether we want Jesus’ gift of forgiveness and way of living, or our own way. Heaven or hell. But you’re the only one who can send yourself to hell, because God’s already done everything He possibly can so you don’t go there. The choice and risk is yours. Just Think a Minute.
The self-proclaimed media coordinator FORMER Misamis Oriental Gov. Bong Calining is a changed man. That description was from his son, Andy, who said that ‘Bong’ is no longer the ‘Bong’ Calingin when he was still provincial governor. Andy is right. Bong Calingin has totally changed. He is no longer a politician. Every day, the former governor hear mass whenever he is. Perhaps, Bong have so much ‘sins’ that even if he hears Cris Diaz daily mass would not be enough to exonerate him of all his malfeasance when he was still a public servant. However, that is not the point. The point is the former governor must have realized the excesses he has done to other people in the past. In a press conference over the weekend, Bong intimated that he is not actually leaving politics at all. ‘Being a politician, I would be lying if I would say that I am losing interest if there are political opportunities in the future,’ Bong told the local press. Earlier, Andy invited the local press to conference with Cagayan Valley Congressman Jackie Enrile. The invitation was sent two days before the scheduled press con. Considering that the invitation was sent two days before, everybody believed that Jackie Enrile would be around then. With some prepared questions, the local press was eagerly waiting for Enrile to come. However,
Enrile did not come. The message was that Jackie has to postpone the press conference in exchange of a very important commitment. We do not know. What happens next was that it was Bong Calingin’s personal press conference. Actually, some local media had started to entertain doubtful questions on Jackie’s absence. An informant in Caraga Region told this corner that Jackie and his wife had visited the region on speaking engagement minus Bong Calingin. Of course, this corner was made to believe that Bong is Jackie’s media coordinator in Mindanao. Now, it turns out to be a sting. The truth is, Bong voluntarily appointed himself as Jackie’s media coordinator in Mindanao. If that is the case, Bong is not Jackie’s official media coordinator. Why is Bong using Jackie to call press conferences? If ever, Bong should stop using Jackie Enrile if he (Bong) wants to be backed in local politics. After all, it is clear that Jackie Enrile is eluding Bong Calingin. Well, for whatever reason why Jackie Enrile intends to dissociate with Bong is another thing. After all, with the help of the Enriles,’ Bong regained financial freedom. Perhaps, out of deep gratitude Bong is trying to repay whatever it takes. Thus, being a self-appointed media coordinator for the Enriles,’ Bong would able to show his indebtedness to the Enriles. It does not matter. Being a changed person, too, will not change peoples’ impression on Bong as a politician and as a family man. React: crisguardian@yahoo.com
Pacquiao and the leeches around him NOW that the smoke on the controversial split decision loss of Saranggani Congressman Manny Pacquiao to Timothy Bradley has cleared, allow me to present my observations why he lost the fight in the eyes of two of the three American judges. First, while there was an overall perception that Pacquiao won the fight - the fact remains that when a fight doesn’t end in stoppage the result will be decided by the judges seated in different locations around the boxing ring. And judging a boxing fight will never be an easy one as each of the judges will have to decide on how he or she saw it from their vantage point or location. We must admit that this, therefore,
Double Barrel Vic A. Endriga makes the decision subjective and dependent on that judge’s impression of how the fight went on a round by round basis. They are also more technically competent to make a ruling than any of us boxing aficionados. Additionally, the three judges in the PacquiaoBradley fight, selected by the Nevada State Athletic Association (NSAC), have no record of game fixing. It is, therefore, unfair to accuse them of having been
influenced by a Las Vegas syndicate. The fair thing to do is wait for the investigation to be completed by the office of the Nevada State Attorney General. The probe is being undertaken upon request of Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. We must also stop accusing Arum of having a hand in the controversial decision. While he admitted that he will be earning more money with a PacquaioBradley rematch, Arum
have publicly denounced the result not as an afterthought but as soon as the decision was announced. On hindsight, Arum could just be opening his mouth too early when he made the comment because it now appear that boxing fans, all over the world, are not at all enthusiastic in seeing a rematch between the two. There is a good chance the rematch will become a flop as it is only us Filipinos led by Pacmom Aling Dionesia who are madly crying for a rematch. This is why I admire Pacquiao when he promptly accepted the split decision loss. It did not only made him ten times taller before the eyes of people the world over, it also shows that PAPACQUIAO/PAGE 6

LGU turns over building to PRC By DAVID M. SUYAO
AGUSAN del Sur -- A new building worth P7 million was turned over by Vice Gov. Santiago Cane Jr. to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), represented by Chair and Chief Executive Officer Richard Gordon and Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang, recently. In his acceptance message Mr. Gordon said all over the country, it is only
in Agusan del Sur that a Red Cross building has been constructed by the provincial government itself. He also informed his audience that “PRC is now an international service, relief and rescue organization, ready to respond to any form of calamity.” It is also into trainings and provision of facilities and equipment to prepare those who would be willing to help.
During the occasion, the PRC distributed to its volunteers 143 light rescue materials (LRM), composed of rubber boots, raincoats, flashlights, megaphones, radios, first aid kits with supplies and axes, courtesy of the Netherlands Red Cross, represented by Margot Cleenberger. Ms. Cleenberger said they have chosen Agusan del Sur for the LRMs
because the province is a flood-prone area. For his part, Vice Gov. Cane said that since 2010, the provincial government has increased its allocation for the blood processing re-agents from P1.5 to P2.5 million every year. “We have also paid half the cost of an ambulance worth P1.9 million,” Vice Gov. Cane further said. (DMS/PIA-Agusandel Sur/ asf )

Phoenix Petroleum among best small cap companies: Finance Asia survey LEADING independent Phoenix Petroleum Philippines was cited as among the best small cap companies in the Philippines, according to a regional survey of investors and analysts. Finance Asia, a Hong Kong-based magazine, tallied votes from 256 investors and analysts across Asia for its 12th annual poll of Asia’s top companies. They released the results on May 16 of the “best managed” companies and chief executive officers (CEOs). P h o e n i x Pe t rol e u m came third in the list of best small cap companies, after EEI Corp. and Jollibee Foods. “We are honored and humbled to be recognized as one of the best companies in the country, alongside bigger and more established ones,” said Phoenix President and CEO Dennis Uy. “Recognitions such as this inspire us to work harder and make Phoenix a stronger, dynamic company.” The leading independent and fastest-growing oil company, Phoenix Petroleum posted an all‐time‐
high quarter performance in the first three months of 2012 with revenue of Php 8.3 billion, 35% higher compared to Php 6.1 billion in the same period last year. Pacquiao...
reflexes of Pacquiao have slowed down or could probably been already impaired. Gone were the days when Pacquiao’s knockout punch was feared even by boxers much stronger and bigger than him. Most importantly, Pacquiao needs to make a decision. He should think deeply if it is good for him to be a jack of all trade and master of none. He is into legislative work, singing and TV hosting, bible preaching, property development business, MP signature sportswear manufacturing and operating sportswear outlets in malls, managing boxing talents, product model/ advertising endorser, sports benefactor, charity work, playing basketball, darts, golf, et cetera. You name it, Pacquaio is everywhere. There is no doubt in my mind that different people and interest groups are exploiting Pacquiao while he is popular and hot property. And these exploiters include the big bosses of GMA Channel 7. They are simply trying to make more money out of Pacquiao by continuously giving him a weekly television program even if the man’s hosting and singing prowess are clearly far from average. It is definitely many, many notches below but they sustain the show because Manny makes many, very many money for the network. TALAGANG NAPALIGIRAN SI PACQUIAO NG MARAMANING LINTA. Grabe Dong! he has no more anger in his heart. Pacquiao is completely a man at peace with himself. This is one attitude we should emulate in him. The wise move for Pacquiao right now is to look for a fight which would be more financially rewarding for him. As the only champion in eight different weight categories, Pacquiao no longer need to recapture his WBO welterweight crown from Bradley. It would rather be a myopic move. Why? Because there is no question in the minds of everyone that Pacquiao won. Even WBO President Francisco Valcarcel, a former Mexican promoter with dubious integrity, admitted rather belatedly that Pacquaio, indeed, won. It would be nice for him to work out with Arum for a possible fight with other welterweight champions or go for a fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez but not in Las Vegas. Maybe it should be at the Cowboy Stadium in Texas or elsewhere in the world. Maybe Manila because it could already be his farewell fight. But before Pacquiao starts to plan on a fight in November this year, he needs to do some soul searching. One, the reason why he suffered a split decision loss was because he failed to overwhelm Bradley. He failed to make follow up punches in, at least, in two instances when Bradley was clearly hurt. It showed the

Pelaez has five absences, Mercy Grace Acain with four, SP members Benedict Lagbas, Jesus Jardin, Heckert Emano, and Jimmy Caiña have two absences, respectively. For his part, Vice Governor Norris Babiera said that Provincial Board Members Arsenio Kho, Arrish Canonigo, and Jabi Bernaldez frequently report to session hall early with no absences. Apart from absences, the regular sessions of the provincial board of Misamis Oriental are marred by the so-called “Filipino Time” syndrome. The Urban Dictionary, an online dictionary defines “Filipino Time” as “always late ... a filipino culture ... it’s like always coming late to a meeting ... especially in parties or when friends are going out ... most of the time 1 hour late or even more ... and when you call them they will lie that they are on their way already and almost there ... but the fact is that they are still at home getting prep up...” Here’s how the dictionary gave its sample on the meaning of Filipino Time: Pinay 1: (on the phone) where are you already you’re already an hour late? Pinay 2: (still getting dressed @ home) I’m on my way there I’m near already... Pinay 1: Ok! Make haste! When asked why it is that regular session always starts past eleven, Babiera replied: “Mao gyud na ang akong naobserbahan. Pero aron mahunong na kini, akong tawagon ang session sugod karong Lunes nga moabot 10 o’clock with or without the quorum.” “Kung wala pa’y quorum, tawagon nako ang session ug usab after 10 minutes and those who will not be around should be marked absent,” Babiera added. Kho, on one hand, said Babiera reports to office as early as 6 a.m. every Monday and 7 a.m. on the remaining working days. “He even deserves an award for his punctuality,” said Kho apparently referring to Babiera. Kho and Jardin suggested that the vice governor, being the presiding officer, should impose the “house rules” to prevent the frequently delayed regular sessions of the provincial board of Misamis Oriental.

are still missing,” he told the Mindanao Examiner. Atyani’s group was reported missing on June 12 after they failed to return to their hostel rooms in Jolo town. “The trio went out of their hostel in a private jeep early on that day and since then have not returned,” he said. Atyani, who was a former bureau chief of the Middle East Broadcasting Company, had also secretly interviewed Al-Qaeda terror
leader Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri in Afghanistan months before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. Pintac identified the slain soldier as Pfc. Rey Enerio, a security escort of trader Justina Pari-an. A member of the Army’s 6th Infantry Battalion, Enerio served as Pari-an’s security escorts due to threats to her life and that of her family. Parian and her daughter, Rona, accompanied by Pfc. Enerio were on their way to the town proper of North Upi from Cotabato City on board a Toyota Vios car when gunmen flagged them at Kilometer 26, Barangay Kibucay. Pintac said the gunmen opened fire at the car of Parian when they saw Enerio inside armed with an M-16 assault rifle. Enerio traded bullets with the attackers, killing one of them. But he was later killed and the trader and her daughter were injured. Both are now being treated in an undisclosed hospital in Cotabato City. Pintac said three other attackers were wounded in an ensuing firefight between government troops and the would-be kidnappers. Kidnap for ransom cases normally rise as elections draw near or December is past approaching.
Pintac appealed to traders to always coordinate with local authorities to prevent similar incident in the future. He said the police were readying charges against the gunmen who were believed to be residing in Maguindanao’s hinterlands. WITH WIRE REPORT

Meanwhile, Dr. Luisito B. Heat spank Thunder in Game 3, 91-85

MIAMI––Thunder’s ‘youthful indiscretion’ bungled Game 3 at the Heat home court Sunday (Monday) running lose a 10-point lead midway in the 3rd quarter to settle 2-1 with the Heat now leading the series. Sp or ts analyst now started to doubt Thunder’s capability to lead toward the Championship though they have posted some of the season’s best outings by outplaying and outsmarting the Mavericks, Lakers and Spurs, three hardened exchampions, which ‘meant the Thunder were either lying about their birth cer-
tificates or defying them’. Whatever it was, on Sunday the Thunder looked young enough to be arm candy for a sugar daddy. A 10-point lead midway through the third quarter disappeared in seconds by an avalanche of errors. They missed free throws. They took questionable shots, made curious fouls. In yet another tense and tightly contested NBA Finals game that demanded sharpness and swagger, the Thunder were overmatched against a team with a reputation, deserved or not, for crumbling in the clutch.

Yes, it was the Heat, still bearing the scars from a year ago in this same setting, who seemed smarter. Or maybe Miami was less sloppy. Regardless, the Heat seized control of the series with a 91-85 victory that OKC will certainly regret if the championship goes to Miami. Sure, Kevin Durant did develop early foul trouble on a few calls that were, let’s say, debatable. He had to sit in the third quarter when Miami made its rally. But that was the only part of the game beyond OKC’s control. Everything else, they did to themselves.
