BWM, MDN to host trauma journalism seminar in C. de Oro By IRENE DOMINGGO, Editorial Assistant

THE BusinessWeek Mindanao and Mindanao Daily will host the seminar on “Trauma journalism” and Journalist’s Code of Ethics this Saturday and Sunday, March 31 and April 1, 2012, at the Dynasty Court Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. Lecturers and facilitators come from the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) and the National Union of Journal-

ists (NUJP). Ms. Rowena Paraan, NUJP secretary general, and PPI Executive Director Ariel Sebellino will be in Cagayan de Oro for the seminar. BWM and MDN Executive Editor Allan Mediante, who attended a seminar in Davao City last January 2012 (which was held exclusively for PPI members), realized

that journalists and other media practitioners (non PPI and NUJP members) also need to be updated on Trauma Journalism thus he requested that the seminar be brought to Cagayan de Oro. BWM and MDN Publisher Dante Sudaria approved the project and for his outfit to host the seminar. Expected participants will come from Butuan

City; Tandag Surigao Sur; Bukidnon; Misamis Oriental; Lanao Norte; Iligan City, Ozamis City, Zamboanga City and Cagayan de Oro City. The two-day seminar will also feature an open forum on organic farming and environment–awareness by Earthsoul Solutions, Inc., an advocacy group and Unifrutti, on the evening of March 31. What Is Trauma

Journalism? PPI and NUJP, in its Trauma Journalism seminars held earlier for its members in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, stressed that reporting about conflict, combat, natural and manmade disasters, and other traumatic events are all in a day’s work for journalists. But exposure to stress and trauma must be addressed to keep them professionally fit.

‘Band-aid’ solutions to M’nao power crisis

Workers pave a road at the relocation site in barangay Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro, a project spearheaded by First District Congressman Benjo Benaldo. Hundreds of families who were survivors of the Sendong disaster that struck the city last December will be housed in this subdivision once completed. Along with the road concreting, the project includes the construction of a concrete bridge over a creek that passes through the area. The housing units donated by the Chinese community are now being readied for eventual occupancy. Photo by Gerry L. Gorit

Last of two-part series Technically, the most promising option which can sufficiently address the Mindanao grid’s shortfall in the short term appears to be the operation of the 108-MW Iligan Diesel Power Plant (IDPP). to be fully rehabilitated and operational. Another proposed ‘bandaid solution’ that involves the re pair and transfer of Power Barges (PB) 101, 102, and 103 appears to be constrained by the steep cost vis a vis the short term benefits to be gained and protracted legal proceedings needed to move it now when it is most needed. 645 towns do not have fire stations

ABOUT 645 towns all over the country do not have fire stations while 666 others are using old and dilapidated fire trucks, lawmakers from Mindanao revealed. This could be the reason why there are around 800 to 900 fire incidents every month as per records of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro) said. Rodriguez and Rep. Maximo Rodriguez (Abante Mindanao) filed House Resolution 2250 asking the House Committee on Public Order and Safety to probe the lack of fire stations in the 645 towns and the use of old and dilapidated fire trucks in 666 others. “Fire incidents cause the loss of lives and properties, which could be prevented if our fire fighters have the proper equipment,” Rodriguez said. “Our fire fighters also have to make do with old and unreliable safety equipment which put their lives at an even greater risk and also put the lives of the towns/PAGE 7

However, due to the COA’s jurisdiction over its present legal issues pending the Swiss Challenge bidding process, DOE is unable to simply step in and operate the plant through PSALM. Even under a best case scenario, the plant in its present condition would be able to deliver only about 20MW peaking power from IDPP-1 and would take time to roll-out the balance over the several months it is expected to take the plant

Thus the two giant media organizations started the pioneering seminar about trauma and journalism believing that “it takes a community of journalists to address trauma.” Coping mechanisms have to be in place to enable journalists to prepare themselves in any unfortunate eventuality, a psychologist handling trauma of journalists who lectured in the seminar, said.
