CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City –-A member of Guerilla Front 20, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee surrendered to 75th Infantry “Marauder” Battalion at Brgy Maharlika, Bislig City Tuesday afternoon. Villar Foundation helps 3 housemaids come home By PAT SAMONTE BUTUAN City––The three overseas Filipino workers – Romelyn Daguplo, Joanalyn Pascua and Jacquelyn Costuna – and their relatives cannot thank the Villar Foundation enough for putting an end to their distress and desperation. The Villar Foundation led by its Managing Director former Las Piñas Representative Cynthia Villar has been repatriating distressed OFWs and helping them and their relatives as part of its key advocacies. “We are happy that we are in a position where we can help our countrymen, especially our OFWs who unfortunately encounter different types of problems abroad. We cannot rescue them all, so it is good that both the private sector and the government are extending similar help to OFWs,” said Villar. The Villar Foundation has repatriated thousands of OFWs. This, in coordination with the Office of Senator Manny Villar,

government offices such as the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Labor and Employment and the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration as well as the Blas Ople Center and Migrante. According to Villar, “Besides repatriation, we also extend other forms of help to OFWs and their relatives. We help them get reintegrated into the society through livelihood trainings and medical assistance. We even organized an OFW summit with Go Negosyo for them to become entrepreneurs.” Arriving back in the country from Dubai, United Arab Emirates aboard Flight GFI 154 via Gulf Airlines, the OFWs are a picture of happiness to be back home safely to be with their families and loved ones. Their stories, no different from most OFWs, are tales of hope and ambition that turned into desperation. But now back home, thanks to the Villar Foundation, they can start anew. Bukidnon native, 31-

year old Romelyn Daguplo worked as a domestic helper in Dubai, UAE. Undetected by authorities, she left the country in March last year, already pregnant. Since punishment for pregnant unmarried women are harsh in an Arab country, she got scared and ran away from her employer. This prompted her mother, who works as a housemaid in the Philippines, to seek the help of Sagip OFW. Joanalyn Pascua suffered in the hands of her employer in Dubai. She was underpaid, overworked and worst, sexually harassed. She sought refuge at the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO-OWWA) in Dubai, until her repatriation. Jacquelyn Costuna, a 24year old resident of Manila, left the country for Dubai in October last year only. She ran away from her employer because she suffered from maltreatment and verbal abuse. She also stayed with POLO-OWWA Dubai until her repatriation on Monday.

DAR turns over CPWASH project to Opol By JAY PIELAGO CAGAYAN de Oro––Farming households in several barangays in Opol, Misamis Oriental will now be safe from water-borne diseases after the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) turned over to the local government unit the Community-Managed Potable Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (CPWASH) project.

The turn over ceremony was graced by no less than DAR Undersecretary for Support Services Jerry E. Pacturan, Mayor Dexter B. Yasay, PARO Zoraida Omar Macadindang, Al Hadja, LGU dignitaries and other DAR officials from the central, regional, provincial and municipal offices. DAR, in partnership with the Philippine Center for Water and Sanita-

tion (PCWS), trained 21 members of farmers’ organizations and residents of agrarian reform communities (ARCs) on how to construct, operate, manage and maintain low-cost potable water and sanitation system. Out of the 21 CPWASH para-engineer graduates conferred with certificates of course completion, 5 hails from Barangay Malanang, DAR Undersecretary for Support Services Jerry Pacturan (5th from right) hands over the symbolic jar to Mayor Dexter Yasay to represent the official turnover of the CPWASH project established in four barangays in the municipality of Opol, Misamis Oriental. another 5 from Barangay Awang, 2 from Barangay Tingalan and 9 from Barangay Nangcaon, all in the Municipality of Opol, Province of Misamis Oriental. The CPWASH project consists of rain water harvester, biogas digester, iron removal filter, bio-sand filter and ram pump. These are low-cost, indigenous based materials and pro-poor technology aimed at improving access to water supply and proper sanitation services. “Water is basic to life and providing low-cost water supply and technology is the main rationale of the project. The DAR lauds the LGU of Opol for its support by providing ample coun-

terpart equity and thanks the community-based organizations that are very much willing to replicate the technology and capable of sustaining the operations and maintenance of the project,” PARO Zoraida O. Macadindang said. Studies made by DAR showed that installing these indigenous water supplies will eliminate too much iron and bacteria present in most water wells in the rural areas. The device can also help reduce greenhouse emissions in the environment. According to DAR Officials, the CPWASH project is being showcased in one barangay in a particular

municipality per province nationwide. In the case of Misamis Oriental, one project was already launched in Villanueva, but through the request, united efforts, and perseverance of local DAR as well as the municipal and barangay officials in Opol, four (4) barangays of the municipality became recipients of components of the CPWASH project. On the same occasion, DAR- Misamis Oriental also took the opportunity to award to 15 farmerbenenficiaries their individual Certificates of Land Ownership Award (CLOAs) that covered 29 hectares in Barangay Awang of the same municipality.

Helping ADHD child through ‘Kumon’ By JINKY M. ARNEJO Principal 1, City Central School, Cagayan de Oro City THERE can never be a boring moment with an Attention DeficitHyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) child. “Ewel”, my first born child, amazed us all in the family when she started to move with her feet on even two months before her first birthday. Since then, days have been like in a track-and-field. Ewel’s milestone of development was way-way ahead of her age giving me an impression of her being a smart and intelligent child. On one hand, as a young mother then, I have been constantly

complaining of how hyperactive and impulsive children are growing nowadays. Never was it known to me that these and more other symptoms manifested an ADHD condition of my daughter. The ups and downs of her academic performance and her threatening behavior were becoming piles of problems in her Kinder 2 class and at home. With the recommendation of her teacher and a colleague, I finally decided to refer her to a Developmental- Pediatrician in the city. Not a surprise anymore, but an affirmation on the diagnosis of the doctor that my daughter has an Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD, combined type of inattention, hyperactivity

and impulsivity. My approaches and interventions as a mother and a teacher then were trial and error until Kumon was introduced by a close friend. Praying and hoping that it will be a good try, so I enrolled her to the Kumon Mathematics program to address her poor Math skills. Her interest, enthusiasm and focus to answering her worksheets are remarkable so a year after I did not anymore hesitate to enroll her to the Reading Program. However, Ewel’s Kumon journey is not easy. Keeping a regular time to work on her worksheets at home and a Kumon day schedule are inconsistent. She has a thousand of reasons to scape and neglect her Kumon

task. School assignments, curricular and extracurricular activities, and her love for table tennis are among her top excuses. There are times she find Kumon worksheets as boring, irrelevant to her present Grade level and even thinks of quiting. But at the end of every day, still I find her working on her worksheets, craving like a favorite food she has missed to eat for a long time. All throughout the years, Ewel’s Kumon instructor, Teacher Elaine and the rest of the teachers never gave up to her. They remain constant in believing that Ewel can surpass her current Grade level despite her special condition. Patience and persistence are among the

virtues Kumon has taught me to overcome my fears in dealing with Ewel. Now, “Ewel” has just completed her Kumon Reading Program after four years, Level O in Mathematics, graduated her elementary level with honors, received various medals both in the academic and extra-curricular levels and a scholarship grant. Indeed, these are very significant achievements which unexpectedly became blessings in disguise while dealing with her ADHD condition. Likewise, the virtues Kumon has developed in her – time discipline, goaloriented, persistence, and courage somehow will help her cope as she unfold the next chapters of her life.

A mother’s view to K to 12 What counts most By JINKY M. ARNEJO Principal 1, City Central School, Cagayan de Oro City CHANGE is one thing constant. With the adoption of the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum, every Filipino expect that significant changes will occur in our educational system. Starting from the Kindergarten program as a requirement before a child enters Grade 1, and an added two years in the secondary level making it 13 years of basic education. As such, a five-year-old child who enters Kindergarten will

finish highschool at 18 years old. There is no big deal with the compulsory Kindergarten program. Basically, even before its universalization starting SY 20112012 many parents have already practiced sending their children to school as early as four years old. In fact, play houses, daycare centers, and nursery schools abound in the city making it advantageous to the parents as an excuse to babby-sitting and as a good training for socialization of their kids. Requiring it now before a child enters Grade 1 is the only difference since parents leave no

choice whether or not to send their five- year-old child to Kindergarten before the elementary level. Our rising concern is on the additional two secondary years or the so called Senior High School level starting with the incoming Junior High School program for SY 2012-2013. Enrollment has already started, yet both teachers and administrators have not yet fully internalized the changes in the curriculum. Consiquently, parents are left battling with questions and confusions among themselves for lack of information. MOTHER/PAGE 7

By JOY S. PANGAN Teacher III, South City Central School 6th-21st Sts. Nazareth, Cagayan De Oro City AN investment in life is an investment in change . . . I think a loving person must return to spontaneity––to touching each other, to holding each other, to smiling at each other, to thinking of each other, to caring about each other. Hugs are good, they feel nice, and if you don’t believe it, try it. These famous lines come from America’s most beloved teacher, author, lecturer . . . Dr.

Leo Buscaglia from his number one bestselling book on Living, Loving and Learning. What a valuable insight an educator must think about! After all, the second greatest commandment is to love others as ourselves which is also the greatest as mentioned in the 1st book Corinthians chapter 13. Love reigns supreme among all other commandments. It is expressed in various ways. It takes in many forms, without it, no other gift matters. As we grow up, we are expecting love from parents, peers, friends, teachers and the like. WHAT/PAGE 7

Lucky you (Part 1) Think a minute. One night in June, 1997, a 55-year-old mother named Karen Minahan was hit by a car driven by a drunk driver. The driver then backed up and ran over her two more times! Karen’s lungs were punctured and all of her ribs were broken. She even had to have her right leg cut off. Over the next 4 years, Karen had 26 painful operations. All of her suffering, including losing her leg and job, would have destroyed most people’s hope for success. But Karen believes she can find hope and happiness no matter what bad things happen to her. In fact, she’s now on several executive boards that raise millions of dollars to help people who need new legs and arms. Karen says: “I’ve always

Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst known I’m lucky! Now I can help people worse-off than I am.” Many people believe in luck and superstitions. They carry lucky charms like special jewelry or clothing. They do the same ritual before important events for good luck. Many are afraid of bad luck so they stay away from things like the number 13, black cats and broken mirrors. But that kind of luck isn’t real and only happens by coincidence. People who believe in

bad luck and superstitions live in almost constant fear of doing the wrong thing, even by accident, because they think it will jinx or curse them and their family. But real luck brings opportunities for success and satisfaction that really last. And the only way to be this lucky is to build your own good character and attitude every day. Today and tomorrow, we’re going to talk about the secrets of lucky people. The first secret is you must believe that you’re

lucky and God’s on your side. You must know that God created you for good things, and that they’re happening to you not by chance, but for a purpose. So even if bad things happen, God will help you use those experiences to become a much better, more successful person. It’s when you know this that your whole attitude and way of living changes. People will like you more and want to help you. So why not ask Jesus Christ to take control of your life? He’ll show you what you need to change. Then, you’ll have total confidence every day that God’s on your side working with you in everything to make His plans for your life start to happen. Just Think a Minute.

What’s happening Mr. President, sir? THE Department of Tourism recently launched an international campaign to push the country as a competitive tourist destination. The move is in response to the poor arrival of foreign tourists to the Philippines. We actually lagged behind our ASEAN neighbors as only three million arrivals was registered last year. The three million arrivals pale in comparison to the number of tourists which visited the tiny island nation of Singapore which surpassed the 7 million mark last year. Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia also chalked up better tourist arrivals compared to those that visited the Philippines. Worse, Vietnam and Cambodia is fast catching up on the race for a big share of the international tourism market. Then, there is this nag-

Double Barrel Vic A. Endriga ging question of whether or not we are ready to handle a sharp increase in tourist arrivals. If you ask me, my answer is a big fat NO. Yes, we are not ready. For one, most of our domestic or provincial airports are not yet at par with international standards. Arrival and departure areas are poorly maintained. To say it more bluntly facilities in most of our local airports are a little bit primitive or “barriotic.” Toilets, which we call comfort rooms, are very uncomfortable with stinking smells.

Secondly, except for a few airports, like NAIA, Clark, Cebu, Silay City, Iloilo City, Davao City and Zamboanga City; all the others are not capable of accepting evening or night flights due to lack of modern facilities. This sad situation explains why the NAIA or Manila International Airport is experiencing heavy air traffic. As a result, flights are purposely delayed in order to prevent any airline accident. In our recent interview over Station DZAR (Sonshine Radio Manila

1026Khz), Director General Ramon Gutierrez, of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP); disclosed that day time take offs and touch downs at the NAIA take place every 90 seconds. in response to the worsening situation, the CAAP will be transferring, before the end of this month, operations of private and cargo planes to the nearby Sangley Airport and Naval Base in Cavite City which is maintained and used by the Philippine Air Force and the Naval Air Command. All these mean only one thing, we are not yet ready to compete for a big share of the international tourism market. Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez needs to really coordinate closely with Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas in order to expedite upgrading and PRESIDENT/PAGE 7

The HPV vaccine: A breakthrough for the women of today LAST week, in celebration of Mother’s Day, I discussed what would be a great way of showing our love to our Mothers. And, as a follow up on the topic, I see it fit to focus this time on one of the preventive, though not curative, breakthroughs in Medical Science, which is actually not just for the mothers, or the mothers to be, but for the women of today. Immunization plays a role in the prevention of diseases and has long been recognized as cost effective, which reduces healthcare costs. The introduction and release of the HPV vaccine is timely, considering the

Health In Focus Dr. Mary Jean Loreche-Diao rising number of cases of the Big C affecting the cervix ( one of the common cancers affecting women ). Human Papilloma Virus or HPV, is a group of more than 100 related viruses, which cause warts, or papillomas ( benign non cancerous growths ). Of these, the ones that are proven to cause the Big

C, are types 6,11, 16 and 18. The mode of transmission of the virus is through the genitals, anal or oral. It is easily passed on through sexual contact. Thus, come to think of it, the cancers that these viruses cause is not limited to the female population, but, can also affect the men ( penile cancer, oropharynx ).

Most infections of HPV origin, may have no symptoms, and may go away even without treatment. But, there are affected patients whose infections may persist for many years, with or without any detectable cellular changes or abnormalities ( seen microscopically by examining the cervico-vaginal smears/ paps test ). What accounts for the absence of these changes or non progression into the big C, is the capability of the immune system of most women that suppresses or eliminates the viruses. For those with persistent infections, the Big C is highly probable. VACCINE/PAGE 7

I WAS trying to think of a perfect Mother’s Day brunch dish––and I immediately thought: “What would my mother want?” In addition to love, affection, and gratitude for all she does for my little family, I know my mother would like one thing: a delicious salad. When I say she loves salad, I mean she really loves any salad, be it veggies, fruits, or pasta. Since it’s summertime I wanted my main ingredient to b e s omething seasonal that you’d also be able to find fresh in almost any grocery store— so I chose Tuna, lettuce pomelo salad for the side along with grilled chicken with lemon cream. Mothers’ Day is a much celebrated day of the year, because we do all have mothers, right? We honor them by giving them tributes they truly deserved and that we would really like to make them feel very special for this occassions. Maybe you would like to plan a sophisticated tea party any mom would love, with our local and internationally-inspired collected menus, where they speak volumes about nation’s heritage. They said “it’s not good to put dirt on the well that gives us water,” but look! Who made this land such as it is now? Of course it’s quite unethical to point fingers as to whom should we pass the blame on. Each one is a contributor, I believe to success and failure. Questions kept on battling my mind. Is there any reason to be merry while we are in this country? Is there any reason to laugh and giggle? One might surely ask, “IS LIFE STILL WORTH LIVING FOR IN THIS COUNTRY?” Invitations to work and reside outside the country

are so prevalent, what more can this “SICK” land has to offer? Easy life? Happy- golucky activity? Pocket empty? Future uncertainty? Yet . . . we still see lot of nappy families. Does it equate to making LIFE WORTHY? The wisest man ever lived on earth is said to be KING SOLOMON. His words of wisdom are but just full of references we could mirror and reflect on. It says in Ecclesiastes 7:14 Good News Version. “When things are going well for you, be glad, and when trouble comes, just remember GOD SENDS BOTH HAPPINESS AND TROUBLE,” you never know

what is going to happen next, Ecc. 15. “My life has been useless, BUT IN IT I HAVE SEEN EVERYTHING,” He added in Ecclesiastes 6:9-10 “It is better to be satisfied with what you have than to always want something else. Everything that happens was already determined long ago, and we all know that a man cannot argue with someone who is stronger than He.” After all, I have now found the answer Wherever we may be, it’s a matter of choice and I have this to say . . “LIFE IS STILL WORTH LIVING . . MyPhone MyParty Invades Boracay Again! MYPHONE recently concluded its Annual MyPhone MyParty at the famed beach of Boracay! A hugely successful event attended by thousands of sexy beach bodies last April 27, 2012 (Friday) at the beautiful Sand Bar. Action started to the beat of a Tribal Band that signified the start of the Party! The event also hosted a variety of musical performances from various bands that rocked the house all night! And a Boracay Beach Party wont be complete without the Best Fire Dancers Boracay had to offer. But the highlight of the event is the signature 1 Phone every 10 minutes raffle sponsored by the Country’s Leading Mobile Phone Brand, MyPhone. According to Richie

de Quina VP for MyPhone, the MyPhone MyParty started off as a coming out party (2011 April) to announce to the local market that the MyPhone Brand has arrived and is here to stay. To differentiate ourselves from the other events in Boracay, we came up with an idea to raffle “1 Phone every 10 Minutes”! Instead of just plain party music and alcohols, we decided to come up with something original and make the revelers experience our products by giving away the phones! And due to the positive feedback and demands from our partners, we decided to return and once again invade Boracay added Mr. De Quina. Whats next? MyPhone MyParty Invades Puerto Galera May 2012!

modernization of our local airports. It is truly shameful that even our NAIA terminals 1 and 3 are terminally ill with its facilities becoming international butt of jokes. Can you imagine its CCTV cameras were exposed to be none functional through the airport brawl between veteran newsman Ramon Tulfo and the group of nearly showbiz has beens Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barreto? Worse, the airport brawl also exposed the police and airport security set up as a model of incompetence. Come to think of it, the incident turned into a melee because the airport police and security were found to be trained using the snail and turtle module. Grabe kaayo Dong! Of course, the airport officials led by retired General Honesto Honrado, former Presidential Security Group chief of the late President Corazon Aquino, was quick in making alibis to cover up his incompetence. Instead of apologizing for the untoward incident and the discovery of the defective security cameras, the old man keeps on telling the public that it was the fault or making of the parties involved. 26. Proponents say that it is BEST given before the start of being sexually active, and, if the patient has not had any infection as yet with HPV. The protection of the vaccine, according to studies that have been conducted lasts for 8 years, thus, booster doses must be given on the 9th year. What about those that may have already been exposed to the infection? Immunization with the HPV Vaccine may still be given, though, one should be made to understand that if there is an existing infection, the vaccine will not clear the virus from the system nor treat it. What the vaccine can do, is, to protect one from the high risk types of the virus ( 6, 11, 16, 18 ). Remember that there are so many types of these viruses! Any one of them may have caused the infection. Which brings us to another fact: even with the completed vaccination, one should not do away with regular check up and cervical screening! Women can be the recipient or the source of the infection. Either way, one stands to lose, if one were to develop the Big C. But not just the Big C, to experience this Sexually Transmitted Disease has psychological , emotional, physical and economic impacts ,that can be devastating. Thus, protection against the disease is a MUST: a vaccine is only one of them. Staying monogamous ( for both sexes ), and having the act within the context of marriage is Biblical and healthy.... whatever one’s stand on the matter may be, RESPONSIBLE is still a golden rule that will always stand the test of time.

Victor A Felix Commander, 4ID said, “We condemn the strategy of the NPA of using and persuading minor to bear arms and fight against the government. This minor should have been sent to school to study, graduate and be employed in the future. This also proves the continuous violation of NPA on Comprehensive Agreement on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CAHRIHL). “The army always encourages armed NPA rebels to surrender, they are all welcome, we will help them join the mainstream and live a normal life because we always want to win peace without bloodshed,” Felix added. As a mother, I can’t help but ask whether all systems in our schools, both public and private, are already ready to embrace the K to 12. Will the two additional years solve the problems of our high school graduates or will it only prolong the agony? One cannot avoid to worry the implementation of the curriculum. Starting with the decision, whether to choose a public or private school, takes into major consideration particularly the quality of education and the financial aspects. Going into the private

love is the gateway to having a meaningful teaching and learning experience to both - - pupils and teachers. I once remember how one of my students when I teach college approached me one day after several years of not seeing each other and said,” Hi! Ma’am, love you...!” Seeing him smile, I was confused if he was serious and the thought of a little malice came into my mind. I remember I was in my twenties then when I was their teacher and my students were in their teens, seventeen, eighteen, some others were already near twenties. As he came near me, I said, “what did you say?,” with a little smile on my face. He went on saying, yes ma’am, from you we learned how to love pointing to his wife with their sixth month old baby. You must be kidding, I uttered. Seriously, he answered, “We love you Ma’am for how you have treated us in class.” Eager and wanting to know more of what he would say, I said, go ahead tell me in what way and how? I was surprised hearing him said a single word, oh, that was all? A sweet SMILE when I entered the class? How did it matter? And our talk goes on... Little did I realize how simple acts of smile, a pat on a shoulder, may lighten up any student or pupil’s sad experiences in life. Little did I realize too how important it is to listen, to understand and be like their secfrom page 3 ond mother in its truest sense Yet, who teaches us how apart from being a teacher. It has prompted me to give to love? Speaking of love in the more what I have in my heart classroom setting between especially to the ones entrusted teacher and pupils, no doubt to me - - my pupils. One may as to who would be the giver. not be perfect for no one is, How great is an educator’s to be loving. It is an important role in developing the being tool in teaching for when we of every pupil. True to the fact, teach out of it, the unlovable that as teachers, we, not only becomes lovable. Considering each one a feed the mind but also feed special creation and most loved young immortal souls. And

school becomes more expensive aside from the increased tution fee but also because of the added years. Expect, too, that many private students will jump into the public schools, increasing the enrolment and the demand for more classrooms to sustain and hold the students for two more years. Public schools are then forced to hold 60 to 80 students in a class. Will there still be quality of education in a very congested class? As an educator advocating K to 12 and as a mother to a forthcoming Junior High School student, I can only hope for the best. Two more years of secondary program, is basically not an assurance to solve our problems in the education system nor a guarantee that our high school graduates can acquire the needed basic skills. However, looking at the investment of people, time and money, we already made the right steps toward improving our educational system. For sure it is not a smooth and easy journey. Nevertheless, it is better to try and fail than to fail trying at all. For in a sense, a bigger return entails bigger investments.

by their parents, even to stinky, naughty and noisy pupils in class worthy of our respect and love. Schools and classrooms are the best venues aside homes where love is demonstrated and experienced. Of course, even in discipline, it is done in the name of love. In understand how incredibly unique one is from the other. One needs to be touched, to be heard, to be smiled at, to be praised with, for a pupil to realize that his/her teacher cares. I’m really concerned about the fact that we all need and crave love and so little of it is seen around. I stick to the words of Robert Louis Stevenson and believe in them that goes, “An aim in life is the only fortune worth finding; and it is not found in foreign lands, but in the HEART itself.” The aim of my heart for it counts most ...to love others especially my pupils, as myself. No turning back! Would also be my aim. How we treat pupils will most likely speak who we are to them and it matters a lot. Our presence may inspire them of going to school daily, ready, encouraged, full of joy and full hope. Where those are present in every child’s heart learning may sink in and certainly they will enjoy life and learning takes place meaningfully as well. We shall be a teacher once in our life and time calls US to move - - today is the best time to affirm, show, and share what love can do. It is the nicest thing in life to love and to be loved. As it is often said, “Give a child a little love and you will get a great deal back.” For the past eighteen years of teaching, needless but I say with all humility, “I have reaped what I have And I’m sure I share the same feelings with my fellow educators sown.”
