‘An empty egg’ THINK a minute. This is a true story about a boy named Philip. Philip was nine years old in a class of 8-year-olds. The kids in his class were mean and unkind to Philip. They would not talk to him or let him play with them. Philip suffered from a disease called Downs Syndrome, so his face looked a little different and his thinking and talking were slower than the other children’s. During the week of Easter the teacher gave each child a plastic egg that they could open. Then she sent them outside to find a symbol of new life, such as a seed or leaf, to put inside the plastic egg. Sometime later all the children gathered around

Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst their basket of eggs and watched as the teacher began to open them. One child had put a flower inside her egg. All the children thought it was a great symbol of new life. In another egg was a butterfly that all the girls said was beautiful. Finally, the teacher opened the last plastic egg and there was nothing inside it. One child said: “That’s dumb!” Another kid said, “That’s not fair!”

Then the teacher felt someone pulling her hand. It was Philip. He looked up at her and said: “It’s my egg. I left it empty because Jesus’ grave is empty. That’s why I have new life.” The whole class was silent. From that day on, Philip was accepted as part of the class. Whatever had made him different was not important or mentioned again. Just a few months later, Philip died from an infection.

On the day of Philip’s funeral his whole class of 8-year-old boys and girls came to say goodbye to their special friend. And each child walked up to Philip’s casket to place beside it their gift: “An empty egg.” Friend, if God the Son can make His love so real and understood to a child like Philip, then none of us has an excuse for not understanding how much Jesus loves us. God humiliated Himself by becoming a human being, not only to die for all our wrongs and forgive us, but then to come back to life to show us that He is God Himself Who wants to give us new life. So won’t you ask Him today to forgive you and take full charge of your new life? Just Think a Minute.

Ready to rumble THE ELECTION season officially starts this month of May, a year before the mid-term national and local elections next year. We will not be surprised seeing dozens of veiled political propaganda in national and local media endorsing would-becandidates next year. In the local level, aspiring candidates are now putting their ears on the ground hoping to hear footsteps Cris Diaz that would likely favor their political prospecting. However, most local candidates want alliance with national political parties. Actually, aligning with a national political party is nothing but just to position oneself with political parties of national influence. It is not also true that national political parties provide campaign funds for allied local political parties. Allied political parties ‘though enjoy election privileges accorded to accredited national political parties. One of these privileges is having precinct-level poll watchers during counting of votes. Usually, national political parties contribute funds only for watchers. However, some senatorial candidates extend limited amount to local allies for inclusion of their names in political campaigns. Now, some would-be-senatorial candidates have started to advertise in major television companies in the guise of product endorsement. After all, there are no laws banning them from doing so when election

season starts. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) bans only those who officially file their Certificate of Candidacy from engaging in political campaign outside the commission’s required campaign period. In other words, those Senators like Miguel Zubiri, Chez Escudero and Angara would not be liable for electioneering since they have not officially filed their certificate of candidacy. Sen. Manny Villar’s wife Rep. Cynthia Villar has also started her way of political campaign via the Villar Foundation. The most glaring political endorsement was that of President Benigno Aquino, III, when he endorsed likely Senatorial bet under his Liberal Party ticket. Aquino endorsed Rep. Angara and Tesda Director Joel Villanueva during a provincial sortie last week. Aquino’s action drew flaked among political observers. While other candidates were merely engaged in image boosting and name recall via television advertisement, here comes a President openly campaigning this early. Anyway, all these brouhaha signaled the start of the election season scheduled next year. In the local level, we expect more aspiring candidates to come out from their shell. In the meantime, the local political scenario appeared to be silent. However, the political under current is definitely building up. While we are expecting some new faces in the political arena, we also suspect that those vanquished in past elections will have a comeback – ready to be clobbered again. PR tactics against the Filipinos HERE is a commentary on some good news published by the Financial Times by David Piling. Reading through the article gave me the “feel-good” sensation. The problem I now have is how is it, all this information sounds like another PR tactic against the Filipinos. The article celebrates our 100th million population growth being the 12th largest on this earth. But what Harry Tambuatco of the food security we require to feed this population? Is there cause for celebration? After decades of strain under the IMF dictates as I was growing up, now we are a creditor to the fund. Exactly what again does this mean and what advantages has it given us? After the stringent dictates, today we are simply a creditor country––so what now? Do we celebrate the plight of our OFW’s who we abuse here and abroad for bringing home the bacon? The article publishes our financial liquidity at nearly USD 80bn, which is higher than our external debt compliment with a growth of over 10-percent of GDP

annually since 2004. Rather than criticize our inability to create jobs for our workforce, we are said to have taken on the cudgels or the solution to the labour shortages of mature economies the world over. Our tax net was widened under the previous administration, though the tax-take remains at a lowly 13.5 per cent of GDP. Spending has been kept in check. Subsidies on fuel and power, the bane of many Asian finance ministers, were scrapped several years ago yet we are now talking of deregulation to appease the rally-driven public. The article continues to compliment the administration over the Supreme Court ruling (considering the very same administration is aggressively trying hard to impeach its head, the CJ) that the huge sugar plantation be distributed to farmer beneficiaries. The country allegedly has taken steps to restore rice self-sufficiency after being forced to import a fifth of our needs only in 2008. The center stage economic platform of the administration called the Public-Private Partnership is queued to build infrastructure have failed to keep pace with the overwhelming population growth. Treating early stage lung cancer When non-small-cell lung cancer is found before it spreads beyond one lung, surgery can sometimes offer a cure. The surgeon may remove the part of the lung that contains the tumor, or if necessary, an entire lung. Some patients are given radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy after surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells. Surgery is usually not an option for patients with small-cell lung cancer because it typically has already spread at the time of diagnosis. (WebMD)

SHOWBIZ/SPORTS Pacquiao team leaves for Los Angeles on Saturday night MONDAY, MAY 7, 2012

www.mindanaodailybalita.com

By EDDIE G. ALINEA THE chief trainer of World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao warned on Friday that junior welterweight titleholder Tim Bradley should not be taken lightly as he will be out to strip the Filipino ring icon of his 147-pound belt when they meet on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. “Bradley might be an upand-coming fighter. A new campaigner, but I expect him to be very focus when he faces Manny on June 9,” trainer Freddie Roach said during Friday’s “SCOOP Sa Kamayan” weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-

Padre Faura in Ermita, Manila. “Remember, he promised to destroy Manny and he’s been doing everything to attain that purpose by training daily since the fight was announced two months ago,” the 52-yearold five-time “Trainer of the Year” honoree of the Boxing Writers Association of America told his audience in the well-attended forum sponsored by Powerade, AKTV and FILA Sports Wear. “ H e’s n e v e r b e e n knocked down, never been KO’ed and has been announcing daily what he intends to do with Manny. Well, I supposed that‘s his way of promoting himself,

but we’ll see,” said Roach, who came to the session accompanied by Filipino conditioning coach Marvin Somodio. Pacquiao himself was invited to grace the session for the first time since he last showed up seven years ago, but failed to make it as he was too tired after a long trip from Baguio City to Manila Egging to see his four children with wife Jinkee, whom he had not seen in the entire three-week duration of the Baguio camp, Pacquiao decided to proceed to the family residence in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna. Speaking of the recently-ended Baguio training camp, Roach, who hails

from Boston but is now based in Los Angeles, said he is satisfied with the results and that whatever still lacks in Pacquiao’s arsenal will be addressed when training shifts to the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. “Manny’s in between 40 to 50 percent ready at the moment, but he’ll be ready to reclaim that pound-forpound best fighter title,” Roach assured, belying reports that the eight-division champion is on the way down. “To those who are saying that Manny is all done, washed up and too old, well, they’re mistaken. They based their opinion perhaps on Manny’s last outing against (Juan Manuel)

Marquez, but there’s no comparison,” he said. When asked how the fight will go, Roach said it will not last 12 rounds with Pacquiao emerging as winner. Somodio, who took over the strength and conditioning aspect of preparations from Alex Ariza, who left for the U.S, two weeks ago, for his part, said Pacquiao has been doing well in training and is in near perfect condition. “Maganda na ang kondisyon ni Manny. The muscles are back to where they should be,” the 28-year-old protégé of Roach said. “Endurance? Well, it’s there all the time naman, kelangan lang ma-revive and that’s

what we’ve been doing.” Even the leg cramps which Pacquiao blamed in his near loss to Marquez, according to Somodio, has totally been healed, the same as the shoulder pain he’s been complaining about since two weeks ago. Pacquiao was scheduled to work on the mitts as well as conditioning exercises Friday. Sparring resumes Saturday with a seven-round session against Ruslan Provodnikov (four rounds) and Rustam Nugaev (three rounds). Pacquiao and party leave for Los Angeles Saturday night on board a Philippine Airlines flight. A report from the Philippine News Agency

Nicola expected a wedding to follow soon after, but Gwen wanted the ceremony to happen in the Philippines. “He proposed to me after I gave birth to Naima. Sabi ko sa kanya, pag-iisipan ko muna. Ayoko kasing ikasal na wala ang family ko,” she explained. “Minsan na nga lang mangyayari iyon tapos wala

Pinapa-insecure niya ako. Hindi ko na matagalan iyon kaya nilayasan ko siya.” According to Gwen, the womanizing started after she gained weight post-partum and lost the famous Hot Babe figure that had sold countless copies of men’s magazines. “Weird nga, eh. Nagpropose pa siya kunwari pero mambababae rin pala siya. “You can just imagine how I felt that time. Ang taba-taba ko na tapos harapharapan ka pang GWEN/PAGE 9

Two years later, Gwen packed her bags to fly to Manila with Naima and no Nicola. The romance was over. She was quick to divulge the reason: “Babaero kasi siya. Hindi ko na ma-take. Harap-harapan na kasi ang pambabastos niya sa akin. “Tama ba naman na iparinig pa sa akin na makikipagkita siya sa ibang babae?

five years after the last barangay polls. Treñas, Chairman of the House Committee on Good government and Public Accountability, took notice of a Supreme Court comment in the case of Occeña vs. Comelec that there are good reasons for insulating the Barangay from the divisive and debilitating effects of a partisan political campaign, as the barangay Captain and the Barangay Council also act as agencies for neutral community actions such as distribution of basic necessities, conducting plebiscites and settling local disputes. Treñas said the High Tribunal was right when it noted that “it would definitely enhance the objective and impartial discharge of their duties for barangay officials to be shielded from political loyalty.” Rep. Augusto Syjuco (2nd District, Iloilo) authored House Bill 5987, which seeks to reset the barangay and SK elections from October 29, 2013 to October 27, 2014. Syjuco’s bill also proposes that the term of office of all barangay and SK officials should be five years instead of the current three years. E a r l i e r, R e p . B e n Evardone (Lone District, Eastern Samar) filed House Bill 5794 that resets the barangay and SK polls to May 2014 and every four years thereafter. Likewise, Rep. Rachel Marguerite Del Mar (1st District, Cebu) filed House Bill 5750 resetting the Barangay and SK polls to the last Monday of October 2014 and every three years thereafter. A separate measure, House Bill 5962, authored by Reps. Guillermo Roma-

rate, Jr. (2nd Dist., Surigao del Norte), Francisco Matugas (1st District, Surigao del Norte), Philip Pichay (1st District, Surigao del Sur), Florencio Garay (2nd District, Surigao del Sur), Evelyn Mellana (2nd District, Agusan del Sur), Ma. Valentina Plaza (1st District, Agusan del Sur), Ma. Angelica Amante-Matba (2nd District, Agusan del Norte) and Jose S. Aquino II (1st District, Agusan del Norte), calls for the resetting of the October 2013 polls to the second Monday of May 2015. Reps. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City) and Maximo Rodriguez Jr. (Partylist, Abante-Mindanao) also proposed the resetting of the said elections to the last Monday of October 2015. “For a country whose budget deficit was estimated by the President to reach a record high of P349-billion by the end of the year, P3.6billion (spent in 2010) is too high a price to spend on barangay elections,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez noted that elections in the Philippines are always a costly exercise, both for the candidate and the government. As scheduled, the next Barangay and SK elections shall be held five months after the 2013 senatorial and local elections. “It could be a safe bet to state that the upcoming 2013 barangay elections could top the 2010 spent for the barangay polls, which amount could be better spent for other government projects like construction of bridges, roads and other infrastructure projects, and even school buildings,” Ro-

driguez said. “Elections, whether national, local or barangay, prove to be divisive among the populace specially coming from the heels of the very divisive May 10, 2010 polls,” Rodriguez added. Rodriguez surmised that the three year term of barangay officials is too short a time for the unity and stability in barangay leadership and affairs. “ Three years is not enough to ensure that the programs of the barangay are carried out properly considering the fact that it cannot be denied that the last year of the term is basically used for campaigning,” Rodriguez said. A two-year extension would therefore be in order to ensure stability in the barangay level so that the programs initiated by the current leaders would come to fruition, according to Rodriguez.

for the hospital’s expansion was passed during Congress regular session in January last year. ‘I will make a followup this week to be make sure that the expansion of the Northern Mindanao Regional Medical Center be implemented this year,’ Rodriguez added. He said the expansion is necessary since patients at the government hospital in Cagayan de Oro continue to grow. According to Rodriguez, the government regional hospital is the cheapest in the region. ‘The hospital services are at par with private hospitals in the region,’ he said.

The Northern Mindanao Regional Medical Center is one of the most advanced government hospitals in the region. It has modern medical facilities and highly trained medical practitioners much better than other hospitals in town. Rodriguez said he will also push for the conversion of the Agusan to Balubal road to national road so that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) can construct and maintain the road for public convenience. Aside from the AgusanBalubal road, Rodriguez is working to convert the Camaman-an-IndahagLibona road into national road. He said he is optimistic that Congress would give preference for these projects vital in the delivery of basic services for the people of Cagayan de Oro City and its neighboring cities and provinces.

Consumer loans from the parent company went up at a faster rate primarily due to the bank’s tie-ups with major real estate developers. This provided the bank access to more clients who would like to borrow money for their dream house. Funding for these loans came from the inexpensive checking and savings accounts (CASA) which amounted to P102.2 billion as of end of March 2012 from P98 billion a year ago. CASA comprised 63-percent of the total deposits which rose by nine-percent to P162 billion in the first quarter versus P148 billion in 2011.

It further states the legal regime is considered solid––really? Anything sent through the Philippine courts only takes decades to resolve. Many economists are predicting a private investment boom (thanx to the oligarchs and monopolies), predicated on favorable demographics (under age of 25) with the healthiest banking system in south of East Asia yet our bankers are relatively private owned by a relatively few families. This is what I call strategic PR and country positioning if ever I have seen one, what do you think? -----harrytambuatco@yahoo. com

binabastos ng boyfriend mo,” she recalled. The emotional abuse took a heavy toll on her self-esteem. “Iyak lang ako nang iyak noon. Until I really tried to

lose weight para sa kanya. Pero kahit na pumayat na ako, patuloy pa rin ang pambababae niya,” she said. Gwen soon decided she couldn’t take any more. “Doon ko na naisip na, tama na ito. Ginawa ko nang kawawa ang sarili ko. It was time to leave.” She told her boyfriend that she would take a week’s vacation in Manila. She took Naima with her and, after a week, she called to tell him they were never coming back to Beijing. “Nagalit siya sa akin siyempre. Pero may valid reason ako na iwan siya. Kung gusto niyang mambabae, eh di gawin niya. Basta dito kami ng anak ko,” she said. Gwen made the decision not only for her own sake but for her two-year-old daughter’s future as well. “Ayokong lumaki ang anak ko na nakikita kaming nag-aaway. It’s better that she’s here at tahimik ang lahat. Now she’s with my mom in Baguio. Tuwangtuwa si Mommy sa apo niya.” The former Viva Hot Babe is back in the Viva fold. She just signed a new managerial contract with Viva Artist Agency. “Na-miss ko ang showbiz. After two years na nasa ibang bansa ako, it’s great to be back home and working,” she said. “The last movie I did was ‘Bigasan’ in 2009 pa. I also did some daring indie films noon like ‘Heavenly Touch’ and ‘Beerhouse.’ Sa TV, the last one I did was ‘MariMar.’ Noong bumalik ako, I did a guest role in ‘My Binondo Girl.’” Gwen knows the stakes are different this time around.
