Boy, 6 slain by playmate DAGUPAN City––An 11-year-old boy on Monday accidentally shot dead a six-year-old playmate in Barangay Baug here. Chief Inspector Domingo Eden, said the young suspect was referred to the Municipal Social Welfare Development Office (MSWDO). Initial investigations showed the two boys were playing in the suspect’s house when they found a cal.22 revolver. The suspect accidentally squeezed the trigger and the bullet hit the right side of the victim’s face. The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the Velazquez Medical Clinic in Mangatarem town. OPERATIVES of Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) workers in Tawi-Tawi rescued 25 persons believed to be heading for Malaysia as illegal migrants over the weekend. Chief Supt. Mario Avenido, police director in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao where Tawi-Tawi is a component province, said individuals who were rescued by Tawi-Tawi policemen in a remote port were potential victims of human trafficking. AS calls for the legalization of prostitution in the country snowballed, another group is proposing for its decriminalization instead. The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), the government’s policy-making body on gender equality and women’s empowerment, is rather calling for the decriminalization of persons in prostitution as it opposed the proposal to legalize the sex trade in the country. PCW Executive Director Emmeline Verzosa said the commission viewed prostitution as an exploitative system that commodifies and dehumanizes women, men, and children who are being victimized within the system. “We are advocating for the decriminalization of prostituted persons so that they will no longer be arrested, treated, and fined
like criminals, but we are not in favor of legalizing prostitution,” said Verzosa in a statement. Earlier, the militant women’s group Gabriela and members of the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) are opposing the United Nations proposal to legalize the prostitution. In a recent report it released titled “Sex Work and the Law in Asia and the Pacific,” the UN said the Philippines should legalize prostitution so sex workers can be given access to basic rights. MANILA, Oct. 29 (PNA) People visiting a cemetery in the Manila suburbs of Malabon for the first time on All Saints’ Day are bound to be surprised upon seeing an unusual tomb decoration where Lucifer appears to be getting the upper hand in a sword fight with the Archangel Gabriel. This grisly and spinetingling scene is found at the Tugatog Cemetery, one of Malabon City’s three public cemeteries. It is a far cry from the usual depiction where Archangel Gabriel is seen handily trouncing the Devil.
Aside from this, a short skit is also etched on the tomb’s headstone wherein Lucifer appears to be mocking the mortally-wounded Gabriel at sword point, telling him God has no real power on the earth and that even the Almighty’s most loyal followers would follow him, given the right price. The scene ends with Archangel Gabriel pleading for God’s help even as he desperately wished that humanity will not be further led astray by the Evil One. The tomb and its rather perplexing statues is reportedly owned by the Bernardo clan, many of whose surviving members are now
settled abroad. There are two versions of why the clan patriarch opted to put up this rather strange display in their cemetery plot. The first one, often narrated by many of the city’s senior citizens, claimed that the clan patriarch was cruelly tortured and abused by the Japanese invaders for helping the guerrilla movement during World War II. The pain and anguish reportedly suffered by the clan patriarch made him lose his faith in God’s goodness and justice, considering that he was a very devout Christian and family man before the war.
NPA rebels carjack 2 vans-for-hire in Agusan
BUTUAN City––Two passenger vans hired for a family reunion were carjacked by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels while on their way to Bayugan City on Saturday. A report from Agusan Del Sur Provincial Police and Bayugan City Police offices said the two vans, one driven by Nelson Mortos Jr., 40, and the other by Jerry Senon, 38, both of Compostela Valley, were on convoy bound for Compostela Valley Province where passengers have to attend a family reunion. On reaching Bayugan City, suspected armed rebels posing as passengers of both vehicles ordered the drivers at gunpoint to reroute their vehicles toward the mountainous area of Barangay Hamogaway in Bayugan City, 30 kilometers from here. On reaching the area, a suspected NPA ordered Mortos to get out of the van in an attempt to commander the vehicle. Mortos, however, speed up and left his conductor identified only as ‘Ba-
don.’ Senon and Badon were freed in Hamogaway. They went home to Barangay Tapia, Compostela Valley strictly warned not to report the incident. According to the testimonies of the two drivers, the carjackers brought the two passenger vans in Barangay Hamogaway likely towards a rough road leading to Surigao del Sur and Surigao del Norte. Caraga Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Carmelo Valmoria ordered manhunt operations as he warned vans for hire to be extra careful and ask for valid IDs and other pertinent documents from renters. Valmoria also asked the NPA leadership to stop harassing civilians, including drivers who were only having a meager income to feed their families. Last week, a passenger van was also carjacked by suspected NPA rebels in Agusan del Sur. Comelec asks police assistance to control unruly registrants, crowd ZAMBOANGA City––Election official call on police and the military to control crowd as Comelec set deadline of registration at 5:00 p.m. today. Comelec Officer for District II Joseph Ian Tria said thousands of voters flocked to their offices at the city’s Sports Complex or Grandstand since Monday, all in a hurry to register. By themselves, prospective voters could not form lines for registration because of pushing and unruly behavior and thus the police and the soldiers have to step in to avoid pushing and breaking of the lines. Police and soldiers would be stationed at the Comelec offices until the closing of the registration period at 5:00 this afternoon. Comelec Officer for District II Jesús Alvin Lim blamed the disorderly conduct of registration on the failure of residents to register weeks before the deadline. On record, the city has 98 barangays with a total of 438 clustered precincts and 362,124 registered voters composing district I and II. District 1 has 37 barangays and 188,236 registered voters while District 2 covers 61 barangays with 174,587 registered voters. The registration of voters closed at 5 p.m. today without extension.

Think a minute. A mother had not spoken to her son for 3 years because of an argument they had. Even after 3 years the mother was still offended and felt her son should apologize first, not her. By now she had become very sick and was even planning on dying without making peace with her son. But finally, the mother decided to be the first to humble herself and ask her son to forgive her. Immediately her son apologized to her and they became close friends again. You know, when we choose to stay angry and hold a grudge against someone, we believe the lie that our being right is more important than our being happy and healthy. But it’s not! The only way to be at peace in your own life is for you to forgive others. You be wise and strong enough to be the one to apologize, even if you’re older. You be the peacemaker and take the first step. Yet sadly, many of us would rather boil in our anger because we feel the other person was wrong and they owes us an apology. You see, maybe we were right. But life’s just too short to wait for everybody in life who has wronged us to finally come to us first and apologize. It just isn’t going to happen that way. So the sooner we swallow our pride and be the peacemaker, the sooner we’ll be free and happy. That’s exactly what God the Son, Jesus Christ, did for you and me. We are the ones who wronged and rejected God, yet He still loved us enough to humiliate Himself by becoming a human being to live and die for all our wrongs against Him and others. He did it so you and I could be at peace with him both now and forever after we die. He did everything for us. All we have to do is ask Jesus for His gift of forgiveness and new life. You see, it’s only when we ask Jesus to take charge of our heart that we will have His love and strength to be the first to forgive and make peace, so we can enjoy a happy life with our family and friends. CAGAYAN de Oro is indeed fortunate to have been spared the recent spate of rotating brownouts now popping up in various areas of Mindanao. Thanks to the foresight of its late President and CEO Ramon C. Abaya, the Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company (CEPALCO) is one of only three private utilities in the island with its own back-up generators which allow it to weather the current power deficiency in the Mindanao Grid. However, we cannot help but wonder why CEPALCO is merely playing lip service to the Department of Energy and Grid Corporation of the Philippines appeal to urge power consumers to conserve energy and use their available supply judiciously. Its Customer and Community Relations Department complies with but the barest minimum required by the Energy Regulatory Commission to inform its consumers about upcoming brownouts and similar events but little doesn’t
Editorial bother to go the extra mile to make sure consumers receive those messages. For instance, in the latest spate of brownouts hitting distribution utilities around Mindanao, both DOE and NGCP have appealed to consumers to conserve energy and use what’s available responsibly so total demand can somehow be checked during the critical period when various generating units around the island are shutdown for both scheduled and unscheduled repairs. However, CEPALCO has done little in our book to rally the greater portion of its consumers to toe the line and do something about it. Of course, having Minergy to back it up with 50MW of standby power may contribute to this contempt but we can’t help but shake our heads at the cavalier attitude CEPALCO is taking without bothering to launch a media blitz asking all consumers to save energy at this critical time.
It’s also not being a good corporate citizen when it doesn’t even bother to inform consumers that using the diesel plants of Minergy will cost consumers more when their electric bills fall due next month. After all, sure naman ang ginansiya, regardless of the fact they are paying Minergy for the additional 50MW, they can simply pass on the cost of that to the helpless consumers who have no choice but to pay and bear the brunt of that additional expense. In stark contrast, the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) regularly publishes in print broadsheets and issues advisories through its affiliate ABSCBN and all its allied media outlets which make sure its consumers are getting the message. In addition to that, it also taps government and private media by coursing its advisories through the Philippine Information Agency. Even the Cagayan de Oro City Water District (COWD) does this because
When death comes, say ‘no’
A relative died last week. At 65, the mother of six kids was too young to leave her siblings. Yet, death is the only thing in the world no one could say ‘No.’ when it is time to leave, nobody could decide on the exact time, place, and condition. However, there is always an exception to the rule. Suicide is an exception to the rule of death. In this case, the suicide exactly knows the time, place, and Cris Diaz condition when death occurred. The person committing suicide controls everything. Perhaps, this is the reason why Catholics prawn and described suicide as a cardinal sin. The principle is that only God could take anyone or anybody’s life. The Christian doctrine is definite and affirmative that the former rule is non-negotiable. Under the rule, ‘God is the giver of life and, therefore, He alone could take it.’ Such dogma sparked a neverending debate on the propriety of death penalty. The thought has provoked fiery arguments in the interpretation of divine and man’s law of punishment and death. Certainly, the Christian doctrine teaches righteousness and that extreme punishment of death is exclusive only of the Creator. Similarly, the government of men teaches
righteousness. Yet, the laws of men inflict death as a penal law for those who commit crimes beyond the norms of reason and retrospection. Another exception is suicide for a cause. Is there such thing? Will God be so considerate to sanction suicide within the ambit of heroism? What about committing suicide in exchanged of faith? These are seemingly complex questions that the Christian church might not be ready to provide definite answers. No matter, death is death. DAVAO del Sur––For the first time in the history of the Blaan tribal community in this province, a Christian wedding was held Sunday morning. Specifically, the exchange of vows took place inside the newly-constructed ECOFI Church in Sitio Gumiket Ayem Bongmal, Barangay Kimlawis, Kiblawan town between Mr. Benjie Cawan and Miss Robelyn Gulae. The ceremony was officiated by Pastor and Tribal Chieftain Gideon Salutan, witnessed by more than
1,000 residents and visitors. Personnel of the 1002nd Brigade of the Philippine Army provided transportation to the attendees and free
photo and video coverage. Christain wedding has never been part of the Blaan culture in Bongmal, as traditionally, man and
woman unification is done through the “samsong”, an indigenous system wherein marriage is arranged by the parents, through the “saktad” or an agreement of the contracting parties. “Saktad” is finalized by the giving of “dowry”, a gift of money or property by the man to or for his bride. Benjie, son of Ruben and Mary Grace Cawan, is a native of Malungon, Sarangani Province, while Robelyn hails from Tampakan, South Cotabato and a member of the ECOFI Church. by bandits, June 2011. They opted to the Christian wedding after their “saktad”, to formally seal their marriage in the Church and under Philippine Law. An expert has warned that the environment and the people living near the 31 abandoned mining sites in the country are facing great dangers due to soil erosion and flooding in these areas. Appearing before the Hou s e C om m itte e on Natural Resources, Marcial Mateo of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) said that of the 31 abandoned, inactive and closed mines throughout the country, only that in Bagacay, Western Samar is being rehabilitated through a loan from the World Bank. Mateo said mine rehabilitation is not an assurance that the problem of erosion or flooding will be addressed. Rep. Francisco T. Matugas, (1st District, Surigao Del Norte), chairman of the House body, asked Mateo to submit a report on the status of funds intended for mine rehabilitation. Earlier, Reps. Sharon Garin (Party-List, AAMBISOWA) and Raymond Palatino (Party-List, Kabataan)
have filed House Resolutions 1530 and 1905 urging the House body to conduct an inquiry into the matter. Palatino also asked the MGB to submit to the committee a list of abandoned, inactive and closed mines throughout the country. Palatino urged the MGB to assess status of the abandoned or non-operating mines in the country and their impact on the environment and on the health and safety of surrounding populations. Palatino cited the study made in 2001 by the USbased environmental consultancy firm Tetra Tech EM Inc., identifying the 21 abandoned mining sites which they said pose environmental and health risks. The winners will be awarded by President Aquino and will receive trophies and cash prizes. Yasay said Opol’s nutrition program has been successful in checking the health of children to keep them in school. MALAYBALAY City––A dialogue between Central Mindanao University (CMU) and the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) has been held to address the land concern between the university and a number of farmers’ groups. In the meeting held at the CMU president’s office in Maramag, Bukidnon CMU was represented by its president, Dr. Maria Luisa Soliven, Prof. Reynaldo Juan, vice president for university income-generating project, and Engr. Roy Agbayani, director for general services. The DAR delegation was headed by lawyer Aison Garcia, Norberto Paquingan from DAR-South Bukidnon, and Agrarian Reform Officer Joel Villanueva of Maramag, Bukidnon. The said meeting was initiated by DAR Secretary Gil delos Reyes to help the CMU administration ease the tension caused by the group of farmers belonging to the Buffalo-Tamaraw-Limus and some Lumads who continue to occupy the land owned by the CMU, despite the ruling of the Supreme Court on October 22, 1992 in G.R. 100091 (215). The said ruling has decided with finality that the land in question is exempt from Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) coverage thereby nullifying the Department of Agrarian Reform Adjudication Board Central Board Decision dated September 4, 1989 and was affirmed by the Court of Appeals on August 20, 1990. The purpose of the meeting was to explore the possibility of a peaceful settlement of the dispute between the CMU and the farmers demanding for the award of 400 hectares to them. The previous school administrator and farmers have agreed on a five-year nonextendible leasehold contract without paying lease rental to the CMU.

Singer songwriter Christina Perri has been on tour for the last two and a half years for her debut CD “Lovestrong” and has just released her first ever holiday album called “A Very Merry Perri Christmas”. Christina Perri has just ended her first tour, which lasted over two years as opening act for Jason Mraz. One of the highlights of the tour happened in August when she celebrated her 26th birthday on stage. “What really blew me away was on stage. They all surprised me and came out.
